Record-breaking Knorr tapa fiesta dishes in one day

Filipinos love for beef tapa is undeniable. It is a favorite and signature dish that both locals and foreigners will find in almost all households and restaurants in the Philippines.

Tapa came from the Sanskrit word tapas, which means “heat.” It was an ancient, pre-Hispanic practice of drying boar or deer meat under the heat of the sun to preserve them. Over the years, Filipinos have learned to marinade the meat with soy sauce and other seasonings prior to drying to give more taste to it.

In a record-breaking event hosted by Unilever Food Solutions (UFS) Philippines—the maker of Knorr, Lady’s Choice, Best Foods and Lipton, different kinds of tapa dishes were served showcasing the endless possibilities of using Knorr Liquid Seasoning for marinating and seasoning dishes.

“As the preferred food service partner by chefs, cooks, and restaurateurs all over the Philippines, it is our joy and task to ensure that we continue helping them with the right set of products to make their dishes better for their customers,” shared James Benedict Carreon, Managing Director of UFS Philippines. “Through the Knorr Tapa Fiesta, we have showcased how Knorr is every chef’s choice of ingredient to elevate the taste of Filipino dishes.”

UFS partnered with and challenged ten distinct chefs across the Metro to create their ten signature and unique tapa dishes. The different tapa dishes feature different tastes, texture, and even inspirations that went beyond imagination.

“This is a one of a kind event that has been made in the Philippines,” said Jacque Ruby of MakeHistory.ph, a community that celebrates everyone who would like to be part of history, also A&E Networks Asia Head in the Philippines. “This sets a new record that Filipinos should be proud of!”

In celebration of this record-breaking event, Knorr extends to Filipinos the celebration of their love for tapa through the Knorr National Tapa Day last January 29, 2016.

For one day, Filipinos celebrate their love for tapa through a one-day nationwide promotion where they enjoyed two platefuls of tapsilog for the price of one.

Filipinos visit UFS’ TAPArtners nationwide such as Tapa King, Rufo’s, Countryside Steakhouse, Merzci Bakeshop & Restaurant, Floyd’s, and Taps for the buy one, take one promotion.

Starting store opening hours, Knorr National Tapa Day TAPArtners treat the first 100 dine-in customers to a buy 1 take 1 promo. This promo applies to all ala carte tapsilog meals offered by participating establishments.

“Tapsilog is an all-day favorite meal by Filipinos,” shared Chef Brando Santos, UFS Senior Sous Chef. “This favorite is best enjoyed with another Pinoy culinary staple—Knorr Liquid Seasoning, which develops the savory taste that chefs and diners look for.”

Be inspired with more recipe ideas. Visit www.ufs.com.ph to see how using Knorr Liquid Seasoning as a marinade will elevate the flavors of your favorite restaurant dishes.

GrabTaxi rebrands to Grab

GrabTaxi, Southeast Asia’s leading ride-hailing platform, rebrands to Grab today. The new Grab encompasses all the company’s services: taxis (GrabTaxi), private car services (GrabCar), motorcycle taxis (GrabBike), social carpooling (GrabHitch) and last mile delivery (GrabExpress), under one umbrella brand.

GrabTaxi is now Grab --Tan Hooi Ling - Co-Founder, Anthony Tan - Group CEO & Co-Founder and Cheryl Goh - VP of Marketing at the Grab Regional Launch in Singapore.

Since launching in 2012, Grab has evolved from a humble taxi-booking app to Southeast Asia’s largest land transport company, with over 200,000 drivers and over 11 million mobile downloads.

Since mid-2015, the company experienced 35 per cent average monthly growth in GrabCar rides and a 75 per cent average monthly growth in GrabBike rides across the region.

"We've grown over the years – and we're now much more than a taxi app. This new brand is an important evolution that represents our goal to outserve our customers. We are not only providing passengers with a transport service, we are saving them time and ensuring they have a safe ride,” said Anthony Tan, Group CEO and Co-Founder, Grab.

He added, “Grab aims to make transportation accessible to everyone in Southeast Asia. We have set the benchmark in the industry, with the most number of transport services that cater to all price points, all available in one app. We have something for everyone – and are committed to delivering the best possible user experience.”

The new brand represents our growing platform of on-demand services to serve the transport industry as a whole. It underscores our brand promises: To provide the freedom to get to your destination safely and conveniently; the freedom to choose the best transport option for you; the freedom to pursue a rewarding livelihood.

The new logo was designed with freedom at its core. The dual lines are inspired by roadways and they represent the endless road of possibilities. They symbolise the new journey Grab is taking in parallel with its passengers, drivers, employees and society at large.

Grab’s focus on the customer experience has been translated into new app features to make the updated Grab app more user-friendly. The app is designed to be lighter and provide even faster access to ride bookings.

“We are focused on designing the best possible product for our users. We take a hyperlocal approach to understand what users in each Southeast Asian city prefers, from language preferences to payment options,” said Tan Hooi Ling, Co-Founder, Grab. “The updated Grab app is about improving the core experience – we want to make it as simple as two clicks to book a ride.”

●     Enhancements to improve user experience

o      Personalised locations – faster two-click booking experience

Pick-up and drop-off points will be pre-filled based on your favourite places. Users’ preferred locations will be ranked by the day, time and users’ physical location. This enables most users to book a ride in just two clicks.

o      Automated retries – hands-free rebooking

The “auto-retry” feature minimises repeated booking attempts if a passenger does not get a vehicle within the first attempt, without having to manually go through the booking process again.

o      Live driver tracking – better estimation of pick-up times

Watch the Grab vehicle make its way to you, with real-time driver tracking on the map. Users can better estimate the arrival time of their driver, and when they should head to the pick-up location.

o      Simplified registration process – faster sign-ups for new users

Android users can sign up more quickly for Grab. The app will automatically confirm the user’s identity and mobile phone number, with most users not needing to key in anything – just click to confirm. This will be rolled out to iOS in the near future.

●     “Flash” – delivering the power of the Grab network

With the touch of just the one button, Flash searches all of the closest taxis and GrabCars to find the best vehicle for users across both services – meaning passengers will get where they need to go with less waiting.

Flash is available in Singapore, Philippines and Vietnam, and will be rolled out in Malaysia on 30 January and Thailand in February.

●     GrabPay – multiple credit card support
Go cashless and zip out of a taxi or GrabCar once arriving at the destination. GrabPay enables passengers to go cashless by using a credit card payment, making the entire commuting experience seamless. Users still retain the freedom to choose between cash or cashless option as and when they like. For peace of mind, users will receive fare confirmations via the app and an email receipt. Users will also be able to use multiple credit cards and easily toggle to choose which to use.

GrabPay is available in Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia, and multiple credit card support will be available in Singapore starting 28 January and Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia in February. GrabPay will be rolled out in Thailand and Vietnam in the first half of 2016.

●     GrabWork – business-friendly features for working professionals
Expense business rides separately. Business professionals who use Grab for meetings will be thrilled to know that they can now tag their business rides on the go. Other new in-app features include the expense code and trip detail fields for tracking and expense claims purposes.

Passengers can login online to Grab Passenger Hub (hub.grab.co) to download their consolidated business or personal statements for  claims submission purposes. With multiple credit card support, users can add a corporate card and easily toggle between personal and corporate payment options.

GrabWork is available in Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam starting 28 January. Companies who wish to register for a corporate account with Grab may do so at www.grab.co/business.

The Grab app is available for free in Google Play and Apple App Store for Android and iOS users respectively. Existing GrabTaxi and MyTeksi users will automatically have their apps updated from 28 January if auto update is enabled.

Grab is holding Grab Freedom Day in the capital cities of the six countries it operates in. During this event, over a hundred Grabbers including the management team across the region will spend a day as Grab drivers.

“In order for us to outserve our customers, we need to understand them and what better way than spending an entire day as a driver and for a good cause too,” said Cheryl Goh, VP of Marketing for Grab.

Passengers who book vehicles driven by Grabbers will ride for free, and the value of the ride will be donated to charities across the region.

Grab Freedom Day will be held in Philippines on 29 January, Singapore and Malaysia on 30 January, Vietnam on 2 February, and Indonesia and Thailand on 3 February.

It incorporates them both, harnessing a technically remarkable Multi-Magnification ability that automatically switches viewfinder magnification according to the lens the photographer is using plus the Electronic Rangefinder so it simultaneously displays the electronic viewfinder on top of the optical one. You get the best of both worlds.

FUJIFILM X-Pro2 also has a newly developed 24.3MP X-Trans CMOS III sensor and high-performance X Processor Pro image processing engine that can deliver stunning images with a perceived resolution far greater than the actual number of pixels used. This camera is also built with magnesium alloy and is tightly sealed in its 61 points. It’s dust-proof, splash-proof and capable of operating in temperatures as low as 10°C. The X-Pro2 also has dual SD card slots which mean more preferable room for your images. It’s also got 4x the processing speed of conventional image processing engines so aside from the increased resolution, you’ll get optimum write speeds, faster start-up time to capture those magical moments and high speed continuous shooting speeds in sports and action shots.

The camera also comes with a Fujinon18.5mm F2.8 lens which would be splendid for group shots or spectacular landscapes, seascapes and sunsets adept for the Philippine setting.

The X70 weighs approximately 340 grams and is the lightest X-Series camera with an APS-C sized sensor. It comes with a well-designed milled aluminum exposure compensation and shutter speed dials which makes it so easy to quickly access key features and the aperture and focusing rings are made from the same material to keep the weight down. Apertures can be changed in 1/3 or 1 stop increments, plus the focusing ring doubles up as a control ring for quick access to a range of functions.

FUJIFILM X70 is a pocket-sized wonder that delivers high quality images that is unique to X-Series models. The unparalleled color reproduction technology and the unique Lens Modulation Optimizer (LMO) image processing technology are a result of FUJIFILM’s 80 years of experience and expertise in photographic technology research. Its impressive hardware automatically corrects optical defects such as diffraction to achieve striking sharpness and realistic three-dimensional effect. The on sensor phase detection AF works ultra-fastat 0.1 second and the high-speed proprietary EXR Processor II image processor makes the camera start up in just 0.5sec. The shutter time lag is almost negligible at 0.01sec and gets a shooting interval of 0.5 seconds. FUJIFILM X70 is unbelievably fast, powerful and exceptionally compact.

FUJIFILM also adds two new premium products to its impressive lineup. FUJIFILM X-E2S is the latest rangefinder-style model in the world-renowned X-Series that comes with a durable, compact, and lightweight body with a Real-Time Viewfinder that offers a large display magnification of 0.62x*1 and an electronic viewfinder with the world’s shortest display time lag*2 of 0.005 seconds. Furthermore, X-E2S is also equipped with an AF system that excels at capturing subjects in motion. An evolved version of the X-E2, FUJIFILM X-E2S retains the functionality and rangefinder-style design and adds new features including an improved grip, an electronic shutter and a more intuitive GUI to enhance the user experience.

The new FUJINON XF100-400mm F4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR expands the range to a super telephoto option. The FUJINON XF100-400mmF4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR is a super telephoto zoom lens that covers a 35mm focal length equivalent of 152-609mm. The high performance optical construction of 21 elements in 14 groups includes five ED lenses and one Super ED lens to help reduce chromatic aberration that often occurs in telephoto lenses. As a result, it delivers the highest image quality in its class. The lens has been designed for handheld shooting with a 5.0-stop* image stabilization system and weighs less than 1.4kg. Linear motor for fast autofocusing makes it perfect for shooting fast-moving subjects including aircraft and motorsports. The lens is also both water and dust resistant and can operate in temperatures as low as -10°C, so it is suitable for use in a wide range of outdoor shooting conditions. A fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to repel water and dirt, further improving the toughness of lens.

With the launch of FUJIFILM X-Pro2 and X70 and two others, FUJIFILM continues to be a true trailblazer in the camera and photographic film industry, true to its rich storied 80 year history, innovating and creating ways to make taking photographs and making memories easier, fun, and enjoyable.

Montessori Education: A Royal Choice

The Royal Baby, Prince George, recently started schooling at Westacre Montessori school nursery in Norfolk, UK. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge intend to give their children as normal a childhood as possible, so they enrolled their son to a school that employs the Montessori method.

Just like most Montessori schools, Westacre boasts of achieving the best possible outcome for each child, and have in the past met the needs of disabled and special children. The school has been said to keep their children interested and motivated to participate in activities.

Montessori education is a teaching approach developed by Maria Montessori in the early 1900s. It focuses on personal development rather than rote memorization. Montessori education discourages exams and grades and instead focuses on individual progress. Schools using the Montessori approach are known for a liberal style in teaching children, and can include mixed-age classrooms.

The Philippines also has Montessori schools that provide progressive, experience-based and student-centered education. One of the pioneers in Montessori education in the Philippines is the Montessori De San Juan, run by Ms. Sandy Arellano.

Similar to Westacre's class structure, Montessori De San Juan does not have book-based classes with repetitive drills. Instead, areas of study are interwoven, with the subjects linked to one another. The school also allows for personal development and formation beyond education, so that their students can have life-long lessons. "Our students are not only provided with an exemplary set of academic tools, but the wisdom, integrity, and compassion to use it for the benefit of others as well," Sandy explained.

Get your child the same royal education as Prince George. Montessori De San Juan now accepts applicants up to Senior High School. Enrolment for all levels for school year 2016-2017 is until May 31. For more information about Montessori De San Juan, call 239-1102/725-6306, or visit their website at www.montessoridesanjuan.com.

Teresita's 11th branch now open at SM Manila

If you are craving for some authentic Kapampangan Filipino food then Teresita's is the place to be. Their delicious classic dishes like Kare-Kare with bagoong, and sisig is highly recommended. They also offers palabok (my favorite) best with puto.  chicharon bulaklak,  kutsinta,  mechado,  dinuguan and many others.  their kapampangan dishes are all good if not the best. Their bestsellers also include the yummiest halo halo, and cute mini leche flan.

I chanced upon Teresita's at SM North Edsa last year. Whenever Im craving for some kapampangan dishes with rice, and chicharon bulaklak on the side, Teresita's never fail to amaze the foodie in me, plus their servers are courteous and the dishes are truly delicious and good value for money.

They opened their 11th new branch located at the lower ground floor level of SM Manila last January 22, the event was attended by showbiz celebrity Ms. Ella Cruz and graced by Teresita's owners, selected bloggers and media.

“We take pride in bringing the best of home-cooked meals with authentic Kapampangan taste. Just like their second home Teresita’s SM Manila aims to delight guests who wish to enjoy simple, classic but affordable dishes from the country’s food capital,” says Ryan Razon, chief executive offer (CEO) of Nozars, Inc., operator of “Teresita’s of San Fernando” chain of restaurants.

Teresita’s originated in San Fernando in 2002 but it was only in 2011 when Ryan’s family decided to open their first Metro Manila outlet along Tomas Morato in Quezon City named after Ryan’s mother Teresita, whose family operates a successful catering business in Pampanga.

Their first outlet in San Fernando, a mere hole-in-the-wall, gained instant popularity with their Halo-Halo and Palabok.

After their first venture in Quezon City, Teresita’s opened at Waltermart in Munoz, also in Quezon City on 2012, followed by Vito Cruz a year later.

In 2014, they opened their first halu-halo cart in Festival Mall, Alabang.

Last year Teresita’s opened at SM Light Mall and Robinson’s Forum in Mandaluyong City, SM BF Paranaque City, and SM North Edsa Annex in Quezon City, and SM Molino in Cavite, and SM Southmall Kiosk.

Teresita’s restaurants are simple, unassuming, and caters to guests who enjoy heirloom recipes.

Unlike many local restaurants where food are for sharing, Teresita’s serves meals good for one – Kare-Kare, Embutido, Boneless Bangus, among others, which go with rice at very affordable prices, between P110 to P130.

“We hope to open more branches in Metro Manila. Expansion has been brisk in the last four years. And we have been getting encouraging feedback from our customers,” added Razon.

During the first quarter of 2016,Teresita’s hopes to open twonew outlets - at Petron NLEX in Marilao, Bulacan and Petron Clark in Pampanga.
