US Government presented Award for Corporate Excellence to Coca Cola Phils.

In photo: U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Philip Goldberg (center) turns over a plaque of recognition to representatives of The Coca-Cola System, Atty. Adel Tamano, Vice President for Public Affairs and Communications (right) and Juan Carlos Rodriguez, Director of Human Resources and Corporate Affairs, Coca-Cola FEMSA Philippines (left) for the U.S. State Department’s Award for Corporate Excellence (ACE), 12 December at Sofitel Philippine Plaza.  ACE is presented in recognition of the company’s exemplary corporate citizenship, innovation, and distinguished contributions to the overall growth and sustainable development of the local economy in the Philippines.

In a ceremony held December 12, 2014 United States Ambassador to the Philippines, Philip Goldberg presented the Secretary of State’s Award for Corporate Excellence (ACE) to Coca-Cola Philippines for its efforts in the relief and rehabilitation of areas affected by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). Receiving the plaque of recognition on behalf of Coca-Cola Philippines is Atty. Adel Tamano, Vice President for Public Affairs and Communications.

ACE, which began in 1999, was created by the State Department to recognize the role businesses play as a ‘positive force in the world’ and further corporate social responsibility, innovation, exemplary practices, and democratic values worldwide. Companies from the US are nominated by Chiefs of Mission worldwide and chosen based on the consensus of the Under Secretary for Economic, Energy, and Agricultural Affairs, a representative of the Secretary, the Under Secretary for Global Affairs, the Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs.

The award was presented to the Coca-Cola Philippines for its holistic and sustainable approach in responding to communities impacted by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan).  In November 2013, Leyte and nearby provinces in Central Visayas suffered major damage from the onslaught of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). Coca-Cola was one of the first companies to respond to the crisis by donating $2.5 million from its global office for various relief and humanitarian efforts. The following month, it suspended all advertising for Christmas and rechanneled the resources towards the same cause. Coca-Cola also launched partnerships with the Philippine Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity for a nationwide call to raise donations and pool volunteers.

In addition to providing disaster relief services, immediately after the typhoon Coca-Cola realigned its core sustainability programs that can positively impact the lives of affected families to help them get back on their feet. These sustainability programs are focused on addressing basic community needs such as water, nutrition and education.

Chief among the Coca-Cola sustainability programs implemented in affected areas are the Agos Ram Pump water project, which is installed and operational in 50 communities nationwide. Coca-Cola was able to help improve water quality and increase the number of families with access to safe water, especially those families in relocation sites.

To help address malnutrition among school children, the NutriJuice program was implemented, a total of 35,000 school children from various public elementary schools were provided with iron fortified NutriJuice for a continuous 120 days.

While in order to help restore access to basic education, more than 300 classrooms were also built in remote rural areas through the Little Red Schoolhouse project. The recently turned over Little Red Schoolhouse in Marasbaras Elementary School, a six-classroom, two-story building will be used by more than 300 students in grades five and six.

In addition to addressing core community needs, Coca-Cola also provided mechanisms to address the need to revive the livelihood of families. This was done by dovetailing rehabilitation efforts to their 5by20 Program – a Coca-Cola global program designed to provide an enabling environment to economically empower women micro-entrepreneurs. Right after Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), Coca-Cola immediately deployed kiosks, coolers and product bundles to its partner sari-sari stores in order to help restore and jumpstart their livelihood, reaching about 1,000 stores in the provinces of Leyte and Samar. Likewise, Coca-Cola joined forces with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and other private sector in a bid to rehabilitate livelihood of another 1,000 women micro-entrepreneurs by rebuilding their sari-sari store structure and providing them to access to product inventory in order to restart their small businesses.

While in partnership with the Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation, Coca-Cola implemented a Bridge Loan program to 3,000 women who have lost their sari-sari store livelihood to the typhoon. A total of 5,000 women with their families benefitted in the 5by20 Program, this initiative have been able to help ensure that there is a steady flow of consumer goods in the community – a very crucial aspect in disaster stricken communities.

These initiatives were implemented through Coca-Cola’s partnership with the USAID, Philippine Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation, Alternative Indigenous Development Foundation Inc., Department of Education, Philippine Business for Social Progress, and local government units, among others.

“By realigning our core community programs in areas impacted by Haiyan and through partnerships with equally passionate organizations, we believe we can make these initiatives sustainable. Our call has always been to make a positive difference in the lives of individuals and communities because we believe that we can only be as sustainable as the communities we proudly serve,” said Atty. Adel Tamano.

The Coca-Cola Company, a member of the US-Philippines Society Board of Directors, is one of three companies to win the Secretary of State's 2014 Award for Corporate Excellence (ACE). The ACE is given to exceptional American companies for their leadership and commitment to innovation, responsible practices, and positive contributions to local economies where they do business. The ACE award this year had nine finalists that included Chevron Corporation in Burma, Contour Global in Togo, GE International, Inc. in Tunisia, GlassPoint Solar in Oman, and The Linden Centre in China. The other ACE winners are EcoPlanet Bamboo Group in Nicaragua and Wagner Asia Equipment in Mongolia.

"American Sniper" topped US box office, earned 6 Oscar noms

I wont be surprised if Bradley Cooper bagged an Oscar nomination for his role as Chris Kyle in this movie, he prepped up for the role of a Navy Seal, physically and emotionally. You could see and feel the anguish in his eyes when he is in the battlefield and at home. This is my favorite Bradley movie of all time.

Surpassing all targets, Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ multiple Oscar-nominated drama “American Sniper” smashed virtually every available record as it opened across the US on the heels of its already record-breaking limited release.

Easily topping the box office, the film took in an estimated $105.3 million for the four-day holiday weekend and has grossed $108.7 million to date and counting. The announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Sue Kroll, President of Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, and Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

The film’s spectacular opening marks an all-time high over the course of director Clint Eastwood’s illustrious career. Among its many other milestones, “American Sniper” also broke records for a January weekend opening, including both three- and four-day weekends; the highest single day ever in January; the best four-day weekend for an R-rated film; and the biggest opening for any drama in cinema history.

The film also broke records in IMAX theatres nationwide, earning more than $10.6 million at 332 locations, making it the top-grossing January weekend ever for the large-format venues.
The overwhelmingly positive response to “American Sniper” is not only measured at the box office. It also earned a rare A+ Cinemascore rating, becoming one of only 11 films in history to receive an A+ in every category.

In making the announcement, Fellman stated, “‘American Sniper’ has quickly become a cultural phenomenon, offering a personal view of not only Chris Kyle’s life but also of the hurdles faced by many veterans, as well as their families. We congratulate Clint Eastwood, Bradley Cooper and everyone involved in the film on this enormous success, and we expect strong reviews and word of mouth to continue to fuel the box office in the coming weeks.”

“We are so proud of this movie,” said Kroll. “We had a visceral reaction to it when we saw it and immediately made room for it in the year. We certainly couldn’t have known the level at which the film would resonate, but we knew it was special—providing a different look at war and its emotional impact on those who fight and those at home, which has struck a deep chord with filmgoers everywhere. From the first trailer, we designed this campaign to convey the different facets of the film and showcase its appeal to both men and women. The response from critics, audiences and, now, the Academy, has been hugely gratifying and we could not be more thrilled.”

Silverman added, “We knew this was a story that could transcend any divide with its compelling character study of a man who deserves to be remembered for his sacrifices on and off the battlefield. Clint Eastwood and Bradley Cooper have truly done the story of Chris Kyle justice and, in doing so, have also paid homage to the service of all men and women in uniform. We congratulate them and our partners at Village Roadshow on this extraordinary start to our worldwide run.”

“American Sniper” has earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Cooper), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Jason Hall). In addition, Eastwood was honored by his peers with his fourth Directors Guild of America Award nomination and also won the National Board of Review Award for Best Director. The film’s other honors include a Producers Guild of America Award nomination, a Writers Guild of America Award nomination, and a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

From director Clint Eastwood comes “American Sniper,” starring Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle, whose skills as a sniper made him a hero on the battlefield. But there was much more to him than his skill as a sharpshooter.

Navy SEAL Chris Kyle is sent to Iraq with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and, as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname “Legend.” However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, putting a price on his head and making him a prime target of insurgents. He is also facing a different kind of battle on the home front: striving to be a good husband and father from halfway around the world. Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, personifying the spirit of the SEAL creed to “leave no one behind.” But upon returning to his wife, Taya (Sienna Miller), and kids, Chris finds that it is the war he can’t leave behind.

Opening across the Philippines on Jan. 21 in IMAX and 2D cinemas, “American Sniper” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Pacific Crest Trail, America's wildest trail in "Wild"

Pacific Crest Trail, America’s wildest through-rail, with its infamous harsh passages, has recently rose to further prominence in the latest Reese Witherspoon starrer – “Wild,” based upon the personal accounts of Cheryl Strayed’s  journey to bring her life back together after losing everything that deeply meant to her.

Wilderness epics have been around since the beginning of cinema. But from the 1912 silent film “The Conquest of the Pole” to “Jeremiah Johnson” to “Into The Wild” to “127 HouRs,” nearly all have traced the paths of men far from civilization.  But the fact that WILD takes a different, less expected direction drew a devoted group of filmmakers.

Says Witherspoon, who produced the film with her partner Bruna Papandrea:  “Wild” is about so many things that touch people.  It's about life, love, loss and family. It’s about how a woman who thought she was completely broken, but found a way to reconstitute herself.”

Recalls Strayed:  “It was a huge physical undertaking for me to hike the PCT for 94 days, but it was also very much a spiritual journey. I turned to the trail as many people turn to the wilderness -- at a time when I felt lost and desperate, when I was in a place where I didn’t know how to move forward.  In many ways the trail taught me to literally just put one foot in front of the other again.”

“If I would have been a person who didn’t love the outdoors, this role would have been impossible,”  laughs Reese.  “As it was, it was extremely challenging on every level, and far more physically challenging than I ever anticipated.  There was climbing up the side of a mountain and balancing in river crossings and marching through chest-deep snow and falling into a freezing river.  I had no idea it was going to be as hard as it truly was.  But it was also very, very rewarding.”

The heart-stirring vistas rife throughout the shoot were a constant inspiration for Witherspoon, and a reminder of why the untouched spaces of wilderness called so strongly to Cheryl, even at rock bottom.  “It fills you up,” the actress says.  “To see the incredible beauty of our world makes you believe everything might really be OK.  I think that’s how Cheryl came to feel.”

The PCT became a character in and of itself –embodying the rough-hewn allure of the American West.  Winding through some 25 National Forests and 7 National Parks, it rises to 13,000 feet in the Sierra and dips to sea level at the Columbia River, passing through such diverse and inimitable territory as the Mojave Desert, Sequoia National Park, Tuolumne Meadows, the volcanic terrain of Mt. Hood and Mt. Rainier, the forests of Crater Lake – all the way to the Bridge of the Gods, the cantilever bridge that crosses the Columbia River from Oregon into Washington state.

Ultimately, as she entwined deeper and deeper with the character, Witherspoon found that Cheryl’s infamously weighty backpack and ramshackle boots became a part of her own soul.  While the backpack is often a source a comedy in the film, it also became a metaphor for Cheryl learning to shoulder the weight of the past and keep walking on.

“There is something about being in the wilderness,” sums up Jean-Marc Vallée,

Uratex Orthocare helps relieve my back pain

I was once diagnosed with a back pain, wherein it affected my bony lumbar spine. I undergone all sort of work ups, and my ortho doctor prescribed I should be sleeping in an orthopedic mattress to lessen the pain and eventually supported the proper alignment of my body. It was the time that I need a replacement for my sturdy mattress. My doctor recommended Uratex, so I scouted around malls and bought one. The mattress is not cheap, and since I dont want to suffer for the recurring back pain anymore, I bought home a new orthopedic mattress from Uratex.  I slept comfortably over the years since then.  With the help of my medicines, exercise and a sound sleep, my back pain has gone. I have been thankful to Uratex all these years. Truly, a doctor prescribed, quality mattress you can count on.

The foam is made of combined high density polyurethane mattress and a multi-zone topper which help relieve contact pressure – ensuring better blood circulation.
Orthocare from Uratex  is designed to promote equal distribution of pressure to relax the legs, hips, arms and shoulders.

Then an invite came  from Uratex  last December 4, 2014. I was excited to see the Uratex plant in Muntinlupa and what was going around inside, I was just as curious as a 9th grader on her first field trip.  The supervisor toured us around the plant, the first stop was the laboratory for a foam to be tested.

This Foam Porosity Tester is used for monitoring the porosity of flexible cellular polyurethane to determine the ease with which air passes through a cellular structure. It is use to evaluate a degree of firmness to the foam.

This is where the foam is to be cut by the machine, there is a designated foam sizes, length and foam colors too to be considered.   Mattress are available to fit for Twin, Full, King, Queen, California king and twin XL bed size.

The finish product ready to be delivered at the malls and stores.  This is the section wherein they clothed the foam, wrapped it in a plastic, support the edges with adhesive tapes to make it secured.

This bed is on display inside their plant, there is a store designated for consumers to buy anything from pillows, mattresses, beds, blanket, cabinet or simply put, a bedroom showcase.

After the plant tour, I know  I made the right decision buying my Orthocare.   There is one lesson that I learned that day, that you dont have to compromise your sleep to just any mattress but Uratex, the one that is supportive enough to take your body weight and just firm for you to turn with ease. The one buddy that will help you relax after a hard day's work and helps you attain an 8 hour of good night sleep.

Reese Witherspoon should bag an Oscar Nomination for the "Wild"

Everyone is expecting Reese Witherspoon to bag an Oscar Best Actress nomination for this film for her fine performance, directed by Jean-Marc Vallee from a screenplay by my favorite novelist Nick Hornby.

A messed-up woman’s coming of age unfolds in cinemas in “Wild,” produced and starred in by Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon based on Cheryl Strayed’s memoir “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail.”

Thinking she’d lost everything, Cheryl Strayed walked out of her broken-down life and into the deep wilderness on a 1,100-mile solo hike that would take her to the edge. “Wild” began with Cheryl Strayed’s own personal story – that of a woman still reeling from the sudden loss of her inspiring mother, a wrecked marriage and a headlong dive into unabashed self-destruction who decides to put a halt to it all and takes a seemingly preposterous adventure.  With zero outdoors experience, a monstrously heavy backpack and fueled by little but her own ragged will, Strayed set out to hike the PCT, the longest, toughest and wildest through-trail in America, completely alone.  Barely a few minutes into her trek, she considered quitting.  But she persevered and during those few months, she found reminders of joy, courage and beauty amid the fear, exhaustion and peril.  It was an adventure that helped her put her life back together again and emerge with a raw but remarkable story.

Strayed’s experiences became the beating heart of an inspirational, best-selling memoir that was about more than just an inexperienced hiker’s crazy, grueling experience walking from the Mojave Desert to the Pacific Northwest via the rugged Pacific Crest Trail (PCT).  With its mix of punk spirit and vibrant honesty, it also became something rarely seen:  a portrait of a modern, messed-up woman coming-of-age by embracing the call of the wild in her own way.  On the trail, Strayed faced down thirst, heat, cold, feral animals and all of  her worst fears, but even more so, she faced up to change:  pushing through to carve her own path out of grief and a haunted past.

Witherspoon notes that while Cheryl took a lot from the solitude she found, she took just as much from the people she met along the way, encounters that become key to the film.  “I love how all kinds of different people come into her life on this solo trek,” she says.  “It reminds me a little of Bergman’s “Wild Strawberries,” where she’s on this journey and she keeps meeting people who bring up something she needs to address in her life.”

Director Vallée adds:  “WILD is the story of a woman who wants to change her life and decides to do it in a very drastic way by going on this hike on the PCT.  It becomes quite a journey, a journey of discovering herself and facing life and asking herself all the hard questions.  But it’s also a journey of redemption – that’s the thing.”

“Wild” opens February 4 in cinemas from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Watch the "Legend" for "American Sniper"

This movie is beautifully directed by Clint Eastwood. Truly, a masterpiece one should never missed. I am wishing that Bradley Cooper will win an award or nomination for his role as Chris Kyle the "American Sniper". I realized that all soldiers out there are the unsung heroes of our time. I left the movie house with a heavy heart, see for yourself why.

The real Chris Kyle

Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, personifying the spirit of the SEAL creed to “leave no one behind.”  But upon returning to his wife, Taya (Sienna Miller), and kids, Chris finds that it is the war he can’t leave behind.

A two-time Oscar nominee for his work in “Silver Linings Playbook” and “American Hustle,” Cooper heads the cast, which also includes Sienna Miller, Luke Grimes, Jake McDorman, Cory Hardrict, Kevin Lacz, Navid Negahban and Keir O’Donnell.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Clint Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby,” “Unforgiven”) directed “American Sniper” from a screenplay written by Jason Hall, based on the book by Chris Kyle, with Scott McEwen and Jim DeFelice.  The autobiography was a runaway bestseller, spending 18 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, 13 of those at number one.

The film is produced by Eastwood, Robert Lorenz, Andrew Lazar, Bradley Cooper and Peter Morgan.  Tim Moore, Jason Hall, Sheroum Kim, Steven Mnuchin and Bruce Berman served as executive producers.

Eastwood’s behind-the-scenes creative team includes Oscar-nominated director of photography Tom Stern (“Changeling”); Oscar-nominated production designer James J. Murakami (“Changeling”) and production designer Charisse Cardenas; Oscar-winning editor Joel Cox (“Unforgiven”) and editor Gary D. Roach; and costume designer Deborah Hopper.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents in Association with Village Roadshow Pictures, A Mad Chance Production, A 22nd & Indiana Production, “American Sniper.”  The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

“…I have to tell you: it’s not the people you saved that you remember.  It’s the ones you
couldn’t save…  Those are the faces and situations that stay with you forever.”
Chris Kyle, from the book American Sniper

Chris Kyle might have been just one of the millions of veterans who have served were it not for a statistic.  He emerged from the war in Iraq as the most lethal sniper in the history of the U.S. military, but the filmmakers of “American Sniper” knew it was equally if not more important to explore the man behind the numbers.

Director/producer Clint Eastwood offers, “I have done war stories before, but this was exciting to me because it was a cross between Chris’s exploits in combat and the personal aspects of his life, which made him even more interesting.  It shows the toll war takes on a person but also the pressure it puts on the whole family.  It’s good to be reminded of what’s at stake when people are sent into war and to acknowledge the sacrifices they make, so I thought that made it an especially significant story to tell.”
Bradley Cooper, who stars in the title role and also served as a producer on the film, adds, “In some ways, it’s a universal story about what most veterans have to go through—dealing with the seesaw of being in a war zone and then suddenly coming home to a ‘normal’ life.  That was very moving to me.  I liked the fact that it wasn’t as much of a war movie as it was a character study.  And if you look at Clint Eastwood’s films, like ‘Unforgiven,’ ‘Gran Torino,’ ‘Letters from Iwo Jima’…they are all complex character studies, albeit with very different backdrops.  So he was absolutely the right director to tell this story in a very raw, truthful way.”

The actor goes on to observe that “American Sniper” and the human drama at its center fit the Eastwood canon: exploring the nature of men for whom violence and justice become inexorably intertwined.  “Chris was not a violent man—in fact, far from it—but when called upon, he did not shrink from his duty because he believed the cause is just.  His heroism wasn’t just in the number of ‘kills’ he had in war; it was also in how he was ultimately able to confront the intangible wounds of war, not only within himself but on his family.”

The screenplay for “American Sniper” is based on the book of the same name, co-written by Kyle (with Scott McEwen and Jim DeFelice).  However, screenwriter and executive producer Jason Hall first spoke to Kyle about bringing his story to the big screen before the book was even written.  He recalls, “I was interested in the journey of a warrior of his caliber…what compelled him to fight and what it cost him.  We know that war is hell, but in this film I wanted to show that war is human.”
Eastwood’s longtime producing partner Robert Lorenz says, “We were intrigued by Jason’s take because it was so well-balanced and offered a more complete picture of Chris and what he went through, both on the battlefront and on the homefront.”

Chris Kyle lived according to a simple code: God.  Country.  Family.  They weren’t just words to him; they were the foundation for a life devoted to duty, service and an unwavering dedication to something greater than himself.  The extraordinary demands of his job as a Navy SEAL, as well as the burdens that placed on those who loved him most, especially his wife, Taya, ultimately forced him to re-examine the order of those three precepts, but never his commitment to them.

Eastwood attests, “Chris grew up with that mantra.  It was also instilled in him from childhood that there are some people who are born to be protectors, and he knew it was his calling to be one of them.  That’s part of what drove him to keep going back to do more tours, even though he was faced with the quandary of leaving his family behind.  He was just one of those guys who was always willing to go above and beyond.”

Kyle’s reputation had preceded him home and first caught the attention of producers Peter Morgan and Andrew Lazar, as well as Hall.  Morgan notes, “We heard about all his accolades as a Navy SEAL and obviously knew what a great patriot he was, but the more we delved, what kept coming across was what a genuinely good person he was…how loved and admired he was by his family, friends and those who served alongside him.  We wanted to form a story around the emotional themes of his life, the different things that drove him.”

Prior to starting work on the script, Hall traveled to Texas to meet with Kyle.  “He wasn’t very talkative at first,” the writer says, “but by the time I left I felt like I’d worked out a way to tell the story and earned his trust.  Then, as I was walking out the door, he said, ‘Oh, by the way, we’re writing a book.’  The book seemed like it could be an obstacle at first, but it ended up being a fantastic resource.”

Producer Andrew Lazar confirms, “We were committed to telling this story long before there was a best-selling book.  But because of the book, we had the benefit of Chris’s point of view, which, of course, really informed what we did in developing the film and in imparting his story to the best of our ability.”

Still, there was another side of Kyle that Hall had seen firsthand and that he wanted to capture in the screenplay.  “It would have been easy to make this film entirely about his time in the war, but Chris was a more complicated person than that.  The book was written less than a year after he came home, so he still had that armor on.  It didn’t really present the softer side of Chris—the loving husband and father—and some of the more desperate moments he and Taya had struggled through in the brief times between those four deployments.  And while this war seemed so far away, the families of soldiers were more connected than ever by use of satphones.  Taya heard some terrifying things on those calls, but that was her lifeline to him, and I also believe her voice helped him find his way home.  I don’t think I fully understood who Chris was until I met Taya.”

“There is a lot of intense action,” Eastwood says, “but the soul of the film and what drives the story are the relationships: between Chris and his brothers in arms and, in particular, between Chris and Taya, which is the most important relationship in the picture.  Chris was obviously crazy about her, but, by the same token, he was committed to fulfilling the demands his country was placing upon him.”

Sienna Miller, who portrays Taya Kyle, offers, “At its essence, this is a human story between two people: one of whom is doing these extraordinary, unimaginable things so far from home and the other who is trying to hold her family together.  Chris’s sense of duty was so immeasurably strong because of who he inherently was.  He believed if he was home with his family more people would die, and that’s a tremendous moral dilemma to be faced with.  As hard as it was for her, I think Taya understood his plight and was trying to be patient and supportive of her husband, but that can be a hard thing to navigate when children are involved and, inside, you’re imploding.  It made it a fascinating and poignant story to be part of and, having met Taya, I felt a responsibility to do it justice.”
Cooper, who underwent a complete transformation to portray the more physically imposing Kyle, shared that sentiment, but states, “I never felt burdened by the responsibility; I was only honored by it.  It seemed like a great opportunity to pay respect to his service and to that of other veterans.  I loved every moment of walking in his shoes, every moment of it.”

On February 2, 2013, an unimaginable tragedy turned the filmmakers’ sense of responsibility into a promise.  Chris Kyle—who had survived four dangerous tours of duty in Iraq and had devoted his post-war life to helping his fellow veterans—was murdered not far from his home on a shooting range in Texas, allegedly by a veteran he was trying to help.  “I had never met him at that point; I had only talked to him on the phone,” says Cooper, “and then, like that, he was gone.”

Following the funeral, Hall reached out to Taya and they spent many hours on the phone as she recounted her life with Chris.  “The film suddenly became one of the ways her children would remember their father and she wanted to get it right,” says Hall.  “It was not only therapeutic for her, it also allowed me to capture her voice in her own words.  She painted a picture of who he was before the war, the unspoken toll it took on him, and all the healing it took him to get back.”

Almost exactly one year later, Clint Eastwood and Bradley Cooper traveled to Texas to meet with Chris’s family, including Taya; his parents, Wayne and Debbie; and his brother, Jeff.  The director recalls, “It was vital for me to spend that time with them because we got a much better idea of who Chris was from his family, who are wonderful.  We came away with a combination of sadness over the loss of this remarkable man but even more enthusiasm about making this film.”

“We gave them our word that we were going to do right by Chris,” Cooper adds.  “And the truth is I really did feel like he was there.”

Taya Kyle confirms that the promise was fulfilled, noting, “I give all the credit to Jason for spending so much time digging deep and learning about all the layers of Chris, and to Clint and Bradley and everyone involved in the movie for so fully embracing that.  It is an added bonus for me to know that people will get a glimpse into the man that I loved and will always love, and to have that preserved on film.  This movie is a piece of Chris.  It is an accurate depiction of the man as a whole—not just the warrior, but the man—and I can’t ask for better than that.”

Cooper remarks, “When Chris says in the movie, ‘I’d lay down my life for my country,’ you know he means it.  And then to see the journey he goes on…  It doesn’t make him a martyr.  It doesn’t make him anything other than just a man.  But that’s the kind of man he was.”

Tech tips and safety reminders for Pope Francis Papal Visit

This week, the whole country will welcome Pope Francis to the Philippines in a much anticipated papal visit that is expected to draw in huge crowds in public venues as well as much social media exposure.

Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) and Sun Cellular (Sun) shared some tips and reminders to mobile subscribers so they can have a safe Papal visit experience.

“While we prepare our networks in support of this historic visit, we’re also reminding our subscribers about basic safety reminders and tips for events involving big crowds.” said Ramon R. Isberto, Public Affairs head for Smart and Sun.

Safety comes first.

It maybe wise to avoid bringing very young children and family members with health conditions to events where large crowds are expected. They can still keep track of the papal visit through TV and radio broadcasts as well as through updates online and in social media. Be in the know regarding the latest news and information regarding the schedules and on ground conditions. For those attending the public events, prepare personal or family emergency kits which should contain basic medicines, enough water for hydration and light snacks such as crackers, and extra change of light clothing. Make sure that all family members have ID cards with emergency phone number contacts. During the event, take note of the nearest first aid or other emergency stations in your areas.

Be mindful of mobile phone usage.

Apart from calling, texting, and social media sharing, your mobile phones can be your handy guide and safety tool for emergencies so make sure they’re ready. Before going to a public event, make sure that your phone is fully charged. If you have power banks, don't forget to bring them too. Due to the huge number of people expected to participate, it is also best to use your phone for important call and texts to conserve battery and resources. For security reasons, while in the middle of a crowd, you can opt to use your phone cameras and then post updates later to your social media when you are more comfortably settled and secure.

Install navigation apps.

To help you find your way, make sure to have a navigation app like Waze and traffic tools like the MMDA app installed on your mobile device.  Aside from suggesting different routes to your destination, these apps can also provide traffic updates. For Waze users, you may also contribute your own road/traffic updates for the benefit of the other users. You may download the Waze app via Google Play Store, Apple App Store, and Windows Phone Store for free. Waze and other apps as well as websites can be used for free with the Free Internet promo for Smart, TNT and Sun Cellular subscribers by just texting FREE to 9999 to register. Make sure to keep monitoring all official public advisories and announcements on which roads will be closed or transport services that will be suspended during the papal visit. Visit www.gov.ph/state-visits-ph/popeph for more information.

Install the Batingaw app.

Turn your mobile device into a safety tool by downloading the Batingaw app. This app can turn your mobile devices into a flashlight, siren, compass, and radio, which are helpful tools to send signals and stay connected especially during emergencies. The Batingaw app, which can be downloaded for free via Google Play and Apple App store, also has the “I am safe” feature which allows you to send a preset text message plus your actual location to a loved one with just a tap on your phone.

Take note of the Smart person finder service In extreme cases where you couldn’t locate your friend or family member, you can make use of the person finder service available for Smart and Talk ‘N Text (TNT) subscribers. To use the service, the person you want to locate must first allow you to locate him/her.  To ask permission, text FIND <name of loved one> <mobile number of loved one> and send to 386.  Once you get authorization, text FIND <name of loved one>  to get the location details of your loved one.

Remember the syntax for emergency load.

Just in case you run out of load and there are no loading stations available in the area, you may request for an emergency load from a friend by calling *808 + number of your family/friend. But if you have zero balance, you may dial *767 for SOS load. This service will allow you to send three (3) text messages to Smart or TNT subscribers with P1 airtime load. Four pesos will be deducted from your balance the next time you top up. These services are available to Smart and TNT subscribers.

Use “ICE” and speed dial.

Add the letters “ICE”, which stands for “in case of emergency”, in select contacts in your mobile phone directory. This will let the emergency responders know who you would want to be contacted during an emergency. Also, don’t forget to save emergency and family numbers on speed dial.

Stay connected.

Be updated of the Pope’s whereabouts and learn more stories about his visit. Follow news stations like @TV5Manila on Twitter. You may send a message to Pope Francis via your social media accounts using #dearpopefrancis. You may also create a prayer post card online via www.dearpopefrancis.ph. www.dearpopefrancis.ph.

Meanwhile, to further allow more Filipinos to be informed and stay in touch, Smart and Twitter has partnered for free Twitter via mobile app or browser from January 15 to January 19 by texting DEARPOPE to 9999. Smart, Sun Cellular and Talk ‘n Text subscribers who are registered to the ongoing Smart Free Internet promo may enjoy the Free Twitter service on top of their 30 MB allocation

INSANITY is an intense, boot camp-type workout designed to push its devotees to their mental and physical limits.

Dr. Costas expands: “This selection of music is structured to give extra staying power and has the highest average tempo of the five fitness trend playlists with astimulating 140 bpm that’s sure to keep the adrenaline flowing. Dr. Costas recommends a fast tempo playlist: “This playlist is second only to INSANITY in terms of its intensity, with an impressive average tempo of 118 bpm, and is characterised by powerful lyrical affirmations such as “I don’t ever want to give up” and “I’m stronger than I’ve been before”.

1. Everything Is Everything – Gabriel Garzon-Montano (BPM of 86)

Cardio Dance
The imperative for a Cardio Dance playlist is that it sticks to a strong and steady rhythmic flow.

Dr. Costas explains; “The rhythm of the songs is an important part of this playlist: an easily extractable metre(or rhythmic pulse) facilitates the central goal of expressing the music through movement. With an average tempo of 111 bpm, as well as uplifting lyrics, the tracks on this playlist score highly for danceability and are loaded with musical features that promote rhythmic movement.”

1. Fancy – Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX (BPM of 95)
2. Boss – Fifth Harmony (BPM of 103)
3. Problem – Ariana Grande (BPM of 103)
4. Uptown Funk – Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars (BPM of 115)
5. Crazy Stupid Love – Cheryl Cole ft. TinieTempah (BPM of 120)
6. Right Here – Jess Glynne (BPM of 120)
7. I Loved You – Blonde ft. Melissa Steel (BPM of 123)

Gymnastics Strength Training
Gymnastics strength training draws upon gymnasts’ common training methods into a workout that’s accessible to everyone.

The science here is about mind over matter; “This playlist has a mid-tempo feel with an average of 112 bpm to reflect the slow, steady movements and isometric contractions– i.e. holding a position like an Iron Cross on rings, or a handstand. Music helps to block out the muscular pain associated with this form of exercise and these tracks have strong dissociative qualities – they take your mind off the ache.”

1. Good Kisser – Usher (BPM of 98)
2. Ghost – Ella Henderson (BPM of 105)
3. My Love – Route 94 ft. Jess Glynne (BPM of 120)
4. Come Get It Bae – Pharrell Williams (BPM of 120)
5. Go All Night – Gorgon City ft. Jennifer Hudson (BPM of 121)
6. Pushing On – Oliver $ & Jimi Jules (BPM of 122)
7. Gecko – Oliver Heldens& Becky Hill (BPM of 125)
8. When A Fire Starts To Burn – Disclosure (BPM of 124)
9. Funknroll – Prince (BPM of 98)
10. Stay With Me – Sam Smith (BPM of 85)

Listen to the Ultimate Gymnastics Strength Training playlist on Spotify

CrossFit is a workout ‘melting pot’ that blends elements of powerlifting, Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics and athletics.

The science, explains Dr. Costas, is therefore about creating the perfect backdrop: “Accordingly, the music is not used in a synchronous mode to direct the movement patterns; rather it plays asynchronously (or in the background) to enhance the training environment. The music should not be particularly loud given the internal sense of rhythm and stream of the trainer’s verbal instructions required to master the high-intensity movements involved. This is another mid-tempo playlist (average of 113 bpm) that creates an ideal sonic backdrop.”

1. Don’t – Ed Sheeran (BPM of 96)
2. It’s My Birthday – Will.i.am ft. Cody Wise (BPM of 101)
3. Fun – Pitbull ft. Chris Brown (BPM of 114)
4. Waves – Mr. Probz (BPM of 120)
5. Rather Be – Clean Bandit ft. Jess Glynne (BPM of 121)
6. I Wanna Feel – Second City (BPM of 122)
7. My Head Is A Jungle (MK Remix) – Wankelmut& Emma Louise (BPM of 124)
8. La LaLa – Naughty Boy ft. Sam Smith (BPM of 125)
9. Art Official Cage – Prince (BPM of 130)
10. Thinking Out Loud – Ed Sheeran (BPM of 79)
