Meet the Ka-panDAD riders

Fathers are men turned by love into heroes. They are deemed as strong, hardworking, and always ready to take risks for their family and keep every member safe.

Much has been said about the challenges of being a father, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. A lot of people were laid off or lost their jobs because of the coronavirus outbreak but three Ka-Panda delivery partners found hope and joy when they joined leading quick-commerce digital platform foodpanda. All are driven by different reasons and dreams but bound by their mission to deliver quality service and go beyond the extra mile to provide for their families.

For 43-year-old Alfred C. Macalinao Jr. from Talisay, Cebu, he doesn’t mind working two jobs to sustain the needs of their family. The father of three is a college professor by day and a delivery rider by night.

(I make sure to manage my time well so I can work in foodpanda. I’ll do everything so I can provide for my family’s needs. Sometimes, being a foodpanda rider becomes my main source of income more than teaching.)

His positive disposition in life and desire to serve his customers also keeps him going, "Gusto ko talagang nakakatulong sa mga taong ayaw at hindi makalabas. Naisip ko na baka ito yung tsansa na makatulong ako sa ibang tao kahit sa simple kong paraan.”

(I really want to help those who don’t want to and can’t go out. I thought that this is my chance to help other people in my own simple way.)

Meanwhile, Eleuterio Magnanao Jr. or fondly known as Ka Ely, is a senior citizen who still braves the roads of Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur just to be able to earn a living for his family and grandchildren while supporting his own medication at the same time.

After working for almost 31 years in Saudi Arabia as an overseas Filipino worker (OFW), the 65-year-old Ka-Panda rider thought he wouldn’t be able to find a job here in the country due to his old age until he was warmly welcomed by foodpanda. Ka Ely was one of the many OFWs who weren't able to return to their respective host countries when the pandemic struck.

“Malaking tulong ang foodpanda sa amin ng pamilya ko dahil kasama ko rin sa bahay yung isa kong anak at ang pamilya niya. Meron din akong maintenance medicine kaya hindi ako pwedeng hindi magtatrabaho sa ganitong edad," he says.

(foodpanda is a huge help to us. I live with one of my children and his family. I also have maintenance medicines so I really have to work despite my age.)

Through being a rider, he’s also found a new purpose and met new friends along the way. He happily quips, "Maganda ang kita and at the same time, naaaliw ako kasi may ginagawa ako kaysa nakatambay ako sa bahay. Nalulungkot kasi ako at parang magkakasakit lang ako doon. Marami akong nagiging kaibigan lalo na sa mga customer. Respectful sila lalo na sa mga katulad kong senior citizen."

(The pay is good and at the same time, I am entertained and productive instead of being at home all day. It only makes me sad and I feel like I will get sick. I also gained a lot of friends through the customers. They are respectful, especially to us senior citizens.)

Like Ka Ely, Raul Pulgo‘s previous job was also greatly affected by the pandemic. He and his wife used to work as massage therapists until the establishment they’re working at temporarily closed in accordance with the quarantine restrictions in Cebu City.

“Noong time na yun, wala akong mapagkakitaan. May kaibigan ako na sabi niya sa akin, bakit hindi ko subukang mag-foodpanda. Sabi ko, pwede ba ako kasi alam mo naman PWD ako. Isang araw lang, pagka-apply ko, natanggap ako agad kaya thankful ako,” recalls the 38-year-old person with disability (PWD) rider.

(During that time, I had no source of income. I have a friend who suggested that I try applying at foodpanda. I told him I doubt I’m eligible since I’m a PWD. I am very thankful because I was immediately hired the next day I applied.)

Despite many challenges caused by polio, Raul is grateful that he can navigate the streets carefully and deliver orders and inspiration. However, his path is not always filled with sunshine and rainbows as there are instances he would encounter irate customers.

“Minsan napapagalitan ako ng customer kasi gusto nila ihatid doon sa taas. Sinasabi ko na hindi ko kaya dahil PWD ako. Sabi niya trabaho ko raw yun kaya wala akong magawa. Pinupuntahan ko na lang para walang problema. Pagdating ko sa kanila, nakikita nilang totoo naman kaya humihingi sila ng paumanhin at binigyan na lang din ako ng tip,” he relates.

(Sometimes, customers would get mad whenever I’d tell them that I can’t take their orders upstairs to them because of my condition as a PWD. They say it’s my job so I have no choice but to do as requested to avoid problems. When I get to them, they’d see that what I’m telling them is true. They would say sorry and they’d give me a tip.)

As foodpanda promises a convenient and quick source of food delivery, road safety and safe delivery practices remain to be the main principles that it promotes among its riders especially to those with disabilities like Raul.

Whenever he feels tired, he thinks of his wife and two sons whom he draws strength and inspiration from. ”Sobrang hirap ng buhay ngayon pero lahat gagawin ko para sa pamilya ko. Kaya malaki talaga ang pasasalamat ko kay foodpanda. Kung hindi niya ako tinanggap, walang makakain ang pamilya ko.”

(Life is so hard but I’ll do everything for my family. That’s why I’m really thankful to foodpanda. We won’t be eating anything if foodpanda didn’t hire me.)

Throughout the years, our delivery partners have proven their indispensable role as our  modern-day heroes in pink who deliver food and essentials straight to our doorsteps. As we celebrate Father’s Day this year, there are different ways we can show some love and appreciation to our Ka-panDADs and heroes on the road. We can give them a five-star rating, consider buying them a meal or drink with our order, or reward them throughfoodpanda’s tipping feature. Customers can easily tip Ka-Panda partner riders with a minimum amount of Php 20 when you order from foodpanda via credit card or e-wallet.

Meanwhile, Ka-panDads nationwide will get a chance to win awesome prizes such as brand-new motorcycles, dinner treats and special vouchers on this special day. All they have to do is share their #kapanDAD story on the Official Kapanda Community Facebook Group.

Let us honor foodpanda riders - the heart of delivery service - who demonstrate perseverance and compassion to the community, all for their families.

Five Dad-approved meals perfect for Father’s Day

Father’s Day is coming up this weekend, and while the current public health situation means we can’t go out and celebrate as we used to, it won’t stop us from enjoying our family’s company.

Celebrating Father’s Day under the New Normal entails that we have to be more mindful about physical distancing, including staying at home as much as possible. So if you’re looking for ways to honor Dad this coming Sunday, having a nice family lunch or dinner with great food from his favorite restaurants is a great idea.

You can easily organize Father's Day celebrations from the comfort of your own home as most restaurants today already accept online transactions. And with PayMaya, paying for your orders is not only much easier, it is also more rewarding.

Pay for your meals using only the mobile number registered to your PayMaya account for an added layer of convenience and security. With this payment option from PayMaya, you no longer have to input your card details on the website which makes paying much quicker and easier. By paying online, you also avoid the risk caused by cash handling. And when you pay with PayMaya, you can even enjoy 1%, 10%, or 100% BalikBayad on your order.

Here are five Dad-approved restaurants you can conveniently order from and pay with your PayMaya mobile number:

1.     Frankie’s New York Buffalo Wings (https://frankiesnywings.com/)
Everybody loves chicken wings, and the best part about Frankie’s New York Buffalo Wings is that you can mix and match as many flavors as you want. Share and bond over dozens of Dad’s and the whole family’s favorite wing flavors to your heart’s desire—and if you haven’t tried Frankie’s yet, you should start off with the Frankie’s Classic Buffalo and Garlic Parmesan flavors, and pair it with their onion rings!

2.     Army Navy (https://armynavy.com.ph/
If Dad’s in the mood for burgers or burritos, then you can’t go wrong with ordering from Army Navy, which is now available for delivery. Get him a California Burger, and throw in an extra patty for a double if he’s got a big appetite. And if he wants a burrito, how about ordering a steak or sisig burrito for good measure? The possibilities are limitless!

3.     Central Delivery (https://centraldelivery.ph/)
Central Delivery is the hub of all your favorite food - from Popeyes’ famous fried chicken and biscuits to Kuya J’s crispy pata and halo-halo, along with your favorites at Landers Central, Da Gianni, and Dough & Co. Whatever cuisine your family members are craving for, you can easily order them at Central Delivery.

4.     Soban K-Town Grill (http://www.soban.ph/)
Who hasn’t missed Korean samgyupsal buffets during the quarantine? Fortunately, Soban K-Town Grill is able to deliver their famed barbecue meats straight to your home. If you miss the samgyupsal experience, go for their BBQ Sets—either the Mega Meat or Favorite Feast BBQ Sets will satisfy your Korean barbecue craving. You can also order the barbecue meats a la carte if everyone wants more!

5.     Boozy (https://boozy.ph/)
What’s a Father’s Day celebration without drinks? Celebrate the company of family with Dad’s favorite liquor; no matter what it is, you can find it and have it delivered to your home through Boozy. Or if you’d prefer, you can suggest something new for him to appreciate—how about trying a smooth and easy drink like Hennessy VS?

For your daily cravings, you can also use your PayMaya mobile number to pay for your online orders at McDonald’s, Goldilocks, and Domino’s Pizza. If you’re looking for a quick fastfood fix, checkout Jollibee, Burger King, ChowkingMang Inasal, and Red Ribbon on Facebook and order your favorite meals via Facebook Messenger. Don't forget to pay with PayMaya!

Paying with your PayMaya mobile number is easy. All you have to do is follow these simple steps:
  1. Order your meals at the website of your chosen restaurant.
  2. Proceed to checkout and choose the online payment/credit card option.
  3. You will be redirected to the PayMaya Checkout page. Here, click the Pay with PayMaya button.
  4. Log in using your PayMaya mobile number and password.
  5. An SMS with the One-Time Pin (OTP) will be sent to your mobile number. Key in the OTP on the webpage to verify your transaction.
  6. Wait for the SMS from PayMaya to confirm your payment.

All that’s left to do is wait for your order and enjoy a nice family meal with Dad. Basta food deliveries, don't pay cash. PayMaya

If you don’t have your own PayMaya account yet, it’s easy to sign up in time for Father’s Day! Just download the PayMaya app for Android or iOS (https://official.paymaya.com/CAK1/425eb133), register your own account, and start shopping with the fastest, safest, and most rewarding way to pay for anything both online and in stores! To make the most out of your PayMaya account, check out https://www.paymaya.com/quick-guide.

The Ultimate Guide for your Father's Day Treats

Whether he’s dad, tatay, papa, or itay to you, many fathers share one thing in common—a love expressed in actions more than in words. Since most dads are not very vocal with their feelings, it's also a challenge to find ways to show them in turn how much you appreciate their love and care.

This Father’s Day, here are simple ways to express gratitude and show how much you appreciate dad’s unique kind of love with the help of PayMaya.

1.  Give him a week’s worth of hassle-free rides

The daily commute to work can be very tiring, especially for dads who have been doing it for more years than you can count. Spare him this weekday struggle by giving him hassle-free rides to and from work for a week.

You can do this by directly purchasing Grab vouchers through the PayMaya Shop. All you have to do is log into  your PayMaya app, go to the Shop tab, choose between the GrabCar P100 or P200 e-voucher, and send it to your dad using your preferred messaging app.

2. Send him some "allowance" for a special gift

Remember all those times your dad secretly gave you some extra baon when your mom wouldn’t budge? Now is your time to give back! Send dad some "allowance" and let him splurge on himself for a change!

Make him feel loved 3,000 times over by sending him at least P3,000 using your PayMaya. All that’s left to do is to include a note saying "I love you 3,000"—your dad’s inner Avengers fanboy will surely melt at that!

Do this from June 14 until June 30, 2019 and you’ll get a one-time reward of P150. See? Showing dad some love has its extra perks, too!

3.  Get him a much-needed shopping spree

A lot of dads get the "kuripot" tag, probably because they refuse to get rid of a worn-out belt or a shirt they've had since a decade ago. Father’s Day is a great excuse to treat your dad to a shopping spree and give him a much-needed wardrobe makeover!

Use your PayMaya physical card or #ScanToPay using PayMaya QR when you purchase items in department stores like Robinsons Department Store or The SM Store. You can also shop online and buy wardrobe must-haves on Zalora or Lazada.

Get more bang for your buck when you use your PayMaya! Spend an accumulated P3,000 using your PayMaya physical card or virtual card from June 12 until June 18, 2019, and you’ll get a P300 cashback. (Then get yourself a little something, too!)

4.  Treat him (and the whole fam) to a delicious Father’s Day meal

Sharing a meal with the whole family is already a gift in itself. So make sure that you and your siblings take time off work for a delicious dinner with your dad this Father’s Day.

Enjoy a hearty buffet meal in PayMaya partner merchants like Niu by Vikings, and #ScanToPay for your meal to get up to 100% cashback!

You can also send dad something extra to enjoy at home by purchasing a food voucher from PayMaya Treats found inside the PayMaya Shop which your dad and the rest of your family can redeem at any participating branch nationwide.

Know where you can make the most out of your money and find the full list of PayMaya’s partner merchants by visiting http://pymy.co/QRMerchants.

5. Take care of this month’s bills

Fathers take pride in being the provider for the family but helping him out once in a while will definitely put a smile on his face. Surprise your dad by paying for all your bills this month.

Take care of your bills in the most convenient way possible when you use your PayMaya app. You can do it in the comforts of your own home or your office, and even get up to P500 cashback when you pay for two or more bills, worth at least P1,000 each.

With most dads, it’s true that there’s no need for extravagance. They’ll surely appreciate the gesture no matter how simple it is. So while you honor your dad this Father’s Day with a meaningful celebration, let PayMaya give you rewards and discounts as well (just because you're awesome!).

It’s your turn to make Dad look and feel great.

He was the first man in your life. He carried you as a baby when mom was too tired and sleep-deprived to do so. He changed your diapers and stayed up at night even when he was tired from work. When you started school, he woke up an hour early to take you on his way to work. He’d also bring you to mall outings with friends and even parties. He made you look good, feel great during challenging times, such as when someone bullied you at school.

Dad may not be at home most of the time but when he is, he makes sure he spends quality time with you. Now that you’re all grown up and caught up with the realities of life, time spent with your father isn’t as much as it was when you were a child and in school.

Watsons’ video for Father’s Day (bit.ly/WATSONSHAPPYFATHERSDAY)
reminds us that before all these comic book and movie superheroes, we already had a superhero in our life and that’s Dad.

Now, it’s your turn to make Dad look and feel great.

Here are some heartfelt suggestions:

Take him to lunch or dinner at his favorite restaurant and foot the bill. Now that you’re a professional, take your dad on a Father’s Day date. Surprise him!

Even better than a meal at a restaurant is a meal you made yourself. With YouTube tutorials, it is so easy to prepare and cook a good meal. Your dad will be happy and proud, no matter what the results.

Give your father the gift of good health by putting together vitamins and supplements so he will be healthier. Dad may no longer be young but he can live a long and fulfilling life if he takes care of his health.

Book him a session or two with a fitness trainer who can come up with a realistic health program for him. Your dad may be too busy or not have the time to exercise but with the right information, he’ll have no excuses and get right on to it.

More than any material thing, your father will appreciate the gift of love. Make time from your busy schedule to be with him and reconnect, not just for lunch or dinner. Send him an SMS everyday or give him a call to let him know that despite your being an adult, he is still your superhero.

Goldilocks celebrates Goldi-Father's day!

Its that time of the year when we remember our father. Thank you's and gifts are not enough to show him how he is loved. Spend a day or two and a simple "kwentuhan"  would mean a lot to him. To my tatay, happy father's day and I wanted you to know that I love you beyond words. Ill be seeing you this weekend to spend Father's day with you and nanay.

One part love, another part fatherly wisdom, add a sprinkling of corny jokes and you have the basic formula for a dad. The equation may be straightforward, but don’t take that to imply simplicity, because as many of us know, raising a child takes a lot of work!

Father’s Day is time where we strive to show the men who raised us how much we appreciate and love them, because despite their responsibilities and hectic schedules, they have always given their time, love, and support to us.

So what can we do to show the dads of the world how much they mean to us? With every passing year, Father’s Day arrives with the annual panic of trying to find a last minute gift that we desperately hope doesn’t look like a last minute gift.

Thus, instead of a goofy tie, why not indulge your dad’s sweet tooth? Apart from the Chocolate Caramel Decadence – a luscious chocolate fudge cake filled with gooey caramel – Goldilocks Bakeshop also offers a range of gifts that will give any father a perfect end to a work-filled day.  Exquisitely delicious, affordable, and true to the Pinoy spirit, there’s truly no better way to fill your dad’s heart with joy.

It is said that the quickest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, and the country’s best-loved bakeshop certainly abides by this. Indeed, Goldilocks gifts are a scrumptious way to celebrate a special day, and put a smile on your father’s face.

For more information on Goldilocks’ delights, or to order something for your loved ones, visit www.goldilocks.com.ph or join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter via GoldilocksPH []
