How Gen Z is building financial stability through stocks

If you ask Reine, a 25-year-old sales agent from Laguna, about her priorities as a Filipino Gen Z, she will tell you one thing: financial stability.

Similarly, Jake, a Gen Z analyst from Muntinlupa, sees financial stability as a way to provide more for his family. This has meant looking for additional ways to diversify his income.

Reine and Jake are among the growing number of young Filipinos who are increasingly focused on achieving greater financial stability for themselves and families as they build their careers and plan for their future.

This growing focus on long term financial security is one of the factors contributing to the broader rise in investing among Filipinos, including participating in the stock market.

Reine opened a stock market account last year through GStocks PH, the trading platform offered by AB Capital Securities Inc., found in GCash. She began her stock investing journey with just P1,000, with the goal of diversifying her income. Investing doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive, she shared, after learning about digital platforms.

While Jake initially started his wealth-building journey through GSave, the high-interest digital savings hub found in GCash, he eventually gave GStocks PH a try. For him, it was the simple sign up that helped make the transition to GStocks PH convenient.

Digitalization has helped broaden participation in the Philippine capital markets by making market information, investor education, and trading platforms more accessible. The availability of online educational resources, the rise of content creators focused on investing, and the proliferation of digital brokerages and mobile investment platforms have lowered traditional barriers to participation.

Together with simplified onboarding requirements, these developments are helping bring more Filipinos into the formal investment ecosystem and expanding access to the stock market beyond traditional investor segments.

How Gen Z Filipinos are shaping the future of financial services

Filipino Gen Zs are taking a more deliberate approach to their financial futures, with financial stability emerging as an important priority. As they explore saving, investing, and other financial tools through digital platforms, their preferences are also becoming an important consideration for financial institutions looking to serve the next generation of customers.

A study by researchers from the Ateneo de Manila University involving more than 170 Gen Z employees found that Gen Z Filipinos are focusing their efforts on “securing their future through savings and investments.”

Meanwhile, digital platforms like GStocks PH allow younger Filipinos to start investing with incremental amounts as they build their portfolios without needing to coordinate with a separate broker.

The number of stock market accounts rose 27.3% year-on-year to 3.64 million in 2025, with 3.61 million held by retail investors, according to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE). Online accounts grew 30.5% to 3.23 million, while investors aged 18 to 28 accounted for 28.2% of total PSE accounts, reflecting the growing participation of younger Filipinos.

To get started, fully verified GCash users need to open the app, go to the Invest tab, select GStocks PH and complete the registration with broker AB Capital Securities Inc.

Through GStocks PH, GCash continues to make the capital markets more inclusive by making it easier for Filipinos to learn about and participate in investing as they work toward long-term financial stability. For more information, visit www.gcash.com.

PH Fintech Players Call for Balanced Regulation to Support Digital Economy Growth

The country's leading fintech executives urged policymakers to adopt balanced, future-ready regulations that protect consumers while enabling innovation, expanding financial inclusion, and supporting the continued growth of the digital economy.

At a panel during the ASEAN Tech Summit, Barbie Dapul, General Manager for Consumer Business and Chief Operations Officer of G-Xchange (the mobile wallet operator of GCash); Maya Bank President Angelo Madrid; Alliance of Tech Innovators for Nation Lead Convenor Monchito Ibrahim; and Tala Director for External Affairs Arianne Ferrer talked about how regulations play a role in advancing the digital economy.

"The goal should be a level playing field that will let the financial institutions compete on value, compete on innovation, on better security, and while ensuring also that pricing is fair and reasonable," Dapul explained.

G-Xchange general manager for consumer business and chief operation officer Barbie Dapul, highlights how regulation can support sustainable growth in the country’s fintech industry

Madrid and Ferrer underscored the need for regulation that supports both consumers and the fintech industry, ensuring protection without stifling innovation.

"Regulation has two jobs. The first is protection: putting in place the safety protocols to make digital transactions safe. The other is enabling the investments the country needs to accelerate its digital economy," Madrid said.

"We need consumer-centric co-regulation that balances financial inclusion goals—greater access, choice, and control to unleash the economic power of the global majority—and a pathway to profitability and sustainability for local and foreign investors," Ferrer added.

Ibrahim, meanwhile, stressed the need for regulations to keep pace with rapid technological advancements. "Technology is moving so fast that our regulatory policy is reactive. We need to re-engineer the process to match our technological revolutions," he said.

Balancing affordability and sustainability

Dapul noted that GCash shares the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas's (BSP) vision of expanding financial inclusion and supports the implementation of BSP Circular No. 1238, which encourages financial institutions to reduce fund transfer fees, including offering zero-fee transfers where viable, to accelerate digital payments adoption.

In line with the circular, GCash lowered its transfer fee to P10. Dapul explained that while lower fees make digital services more accessible, maintaining reasonable charges enables fintech companies to continue investing in technology, platform resilience, cybersecurity, and customer protection.

"I think the circular also recognizes that there are costs involved in delivering quality services," she said. "The circular says that pricing needs to be fair. It needs to be reasonable. It didn't necessarily say that it had to be zero."

"Progressive regulation should strike a balance between affordability and sustainability,” she stressed.

Moving fintech sector forward

Dapul added that fintech companies and traditional banks operate under fundamentally different business models. While banks generate revenue from lending and deposit products, fintech firms rely primarily on payment services to fund continuous investments in innovation and digital infrastructure.

"It's really digital payments that enable us to make the investments needed to sustain innovation, build the infrastructure, and continue providing quality services to our customers," she said.

Dapul stressed that sustaining these investments ultimately benefits consumers by allowing fintech companies to continually enhance security, strengthen fraud prevention measures, and deliver more innovative and reliable financial services.

Promoting financial inclusion

E-wallets, Dapul said, help accelerate digital adoption by lowering barriers to financial access, particularly for underserved and unbanked Filipinos.

She explained that GCash continues to make financial services more accessible by simplifying account opening requirements and rolling out initiatives such as National ID registration and electronic know-your-customer (e-KYC) verification, making it easier for more Filipinos to securely onboard and participate in the digital economy.

“We want them to have ease and access to their mobile phones,” she quipped.

The ASEAN Tech Summit is a two-day event that brought together thousands of industry leaders, policymakers, regulators, and innovators to discuss cross-border digital trade, interoperable payments, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data governance, and other key issues shaping ASEAN's digital economy.

Prior to this event, GCash was an official partner of the 48th ASEAN Summit, enabling seamless cashless payments for delegates and participants in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu—demonstrating how regional collaboration can help build a more connected digital economy.

Let Laureen & Maki’s Dream Summer Escapes Inspire Your Next Getaway

Think you’ve seen everything Siargao and Boracay have to offer? Think again! This summer, travel lovers and content creators Laureen Uy and Maki Santos set out on their dream summer adventures to rediscover two of the Philippines’ most iconic vacation spots.

But let’s get real: planning a dream summer trip isn’t always a breeze. Budgeting, racing for the best deals on flights and hotels, and even scrambling for cash when splitting bills with friends can get stressful. For many, it's the hassle that holds them back from achieving their dream summer.

Luckily, Laureen and Maki have found a way to skip the stress and go straight to the fun. From hidden dining gems to unique activities and the best sunset views, both creators have put together itineraries all booked and paid for with GCash, proving that even the most iconic destinations still have surprises to offer when everything’s made seamless.

Stay at the Center and Explore Beyond in Boracay

Boracay has always been special to Maki. But this time, her itinerary was all about going beyond the usual spots the island is known for and finding its best-kept secrets. She started her trip by checking in at the Four Points by Sheraton, right in the heart of Boracay.

With her L.A.P. (Location, Aesthetic, Price) strategy, she prioritized finding a hotel in a

central location, a stunning design, and affordability, made even easier with GGives, a feature on the GCash app that lets users pay for things that usually feel too expensive - like hotel bookings for a trip - and pay for them in easy installments, with no down payment needed!

“I’ve always been the planner in the group... There’s a special kind of joy in watching my friends soak up the moment, knowing I helped bring it all together,” Maki explains.

Her journey to finding Boracay’s best-kept secrets took her paraw sailing to catch amazing views of the island on a traditional local sailboat made of wood and bamboo, an exhilarating adventure in Mainland Adventures Boracay, and even a Helicopter Ride to see the island from above. These activities can be paid for online with GCash via platforms such as Klook, so that everything is ready and raring to go at the destination.

Between activities, she also tried out new dining spots like Gyukatsu for melt-in-your-mouth Japanese beef, Mai Tai for island-inspired drinks, and Maze Wrap for a variety of Mediterranean wraps and rice meals.

“What makes the experience even better is how seamless everything is with GCash. From booking activities to paying for meals, one tap and I’m all set!” Maki adds.

Food Hop and Island Hop in Siargao

Over in Siargao, Laureen Uy’s dream summer experience is one that embraces the spontaneity that comes with being able to travel with her besties! On a foodie-focused  girls’ trip that balanced local flavor and scenic adventure, Laureen’s itinerary is the perfect guide for anyone heading to Siargao this summer.

Her first stop on her local restaurant hop was to enjoy a feast fresh from the sea at Cev, famous for their kinilaw and ceviche, before heading to Roots for some European flare, and Mondayyy’s Cafe, an all-day breakfast spot and one of Siargao’s newcomers to its exciting cafe scene. Every restaurant accepts QR payments via GCash, so every transaction is fast and seamless.

But this escape to Siargao wasn’t just about food. Laureen’s all-girls crew also set sail for a scenic island-hopping trip to Mam-on Island and Corregidor Island, taking in breathtaking views and topping it all off with a traditional boodle feast. It’s the perfect itinerary for anyone who’s craving an island adventure with friends.

Another trip highlight for Laureen is enjoying a chill sunset session at Kanaloa Beach, complete with bonfires, kayaking, and beachside drinks.

“Hotel bookings, activities, shopping, and eating on the island? All check! Even down to travel insurance, just to make sure we’re protected from any unexpected hurdles, GCash has GInsure Travel Protect. At every point of planning from paying online, to scanning to pay with their merchants, and buying all my essentials, my summers are forever changed for the better,” Laureen excitedly shares.

Plan Your Dream Summer with GCash

Whether you're a meticulous planner or a spontaneous adventurer, one thing’s clear from Laureen and Maki’s trips: GCash is the way to pay for your dream summer. From booking hotels and buying insurance, to dining out, and joining activities, GCash made everything easier so they could focus on what really matters: rediscovering the magic of their favorite places.

Feeling so G to make your dream summer happen? Now’s your chance! Until May 18, send in your video entries to join GCash’s dream summer giveaway for a chance to win a trip for 2 to Boracay, complete with flights and accommodations courtesy of GCash! Alfamart expands GCash payment coverage to all stores

The ease-of-access to cashless payment methods, and the contactless culture brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, has made cashless transactions pretty much the norm. In response to this shift in customer behavior, Alfamart, the first and only Super Minimart chain in the Philippines, will be accepting GCash for all its stores by the end of August.
Currently, there are over 20 million registered GCash users in the Philippines and it is continually growing because some cities used the cashless portal to give aid to those affected by the COVID-19 crisis.

According to Alfamart COO Harvey Ong, expanding the acceptance of GCash payments to other branches is in line with Alfamart’s goal of making shopping convenient and safe for all its customers. “In a post-pandemic society, there is more need for contactless payment options,” Ong said. “We hope to encourage the communities that we serve to use and get used to these cashless options to minimize the need for paper money and coins to exchange hands and limiting physical contact.” Ong further explained.

To date, there are close to 900 Alfamart stores serving Central Luzon, Metro Manila, and South Luzon. Each store is strategically located to cover subdivisions, neighborhoods, and communities so people will have a safe, comfortable, and convenient place to get their everyday needs at supermarket prices.

More than just money: Sending love across the miles

When thinking of traits that best describe Filipinos, the words “generous,” “kind,” or “giving,” among others, often come to mind.

True enough, the Filipino spirit of thoughtfulness is heavily ingrained in our culture that we even created traditions such as pasalubong or the act of bringing back home even the smallest tokens for loved ones and friends. Celebrations such as birthdays, anniversaries and any holiday imaginable get us excited because they signal another opportunity to give gifts to each other.

Such generosity is just one manifestation of how our culture values close ties with family and loved ones. It comes as no surprise that wherever we go, we always think of ways to make those back home feel loved and remembered.

These days, the act of sending money—be it repaying a friend, giving a cash gift to a loved one or even just sending your child’s daily allowance—has been made even more personal and memorable. GCash, the country’s leading mobile wallet, takes the monotony out of an everyday task such as sending money with innovative and creative Send Money options on the app.

Users can now send money with a more personalized touch with the added options to attach photos, videos or audio messages through the Send with a Clip feature. Especially for those sending money from miles away, the addition of a photo or short video makes the act more heartwarming and exciting on the receiving end.

To celebrate special occasions such as weddings, birthdays and Lunar New Year, GCash has also added an Ang Pao Send Money feature. Users can send their best wishes to relatives and friends along with a cash gift enclosed in a virtual version of the classic red envelope.

Sometimes, thoughtfulness also comes with keeping the welfare and convenience of the receiver in mind. The Express Send option on GCash is a quick, easy and fuss-free way to instantly send money to someone in dire need. The Send to Bank feature also credits the amount directly to the recipient’s bank account, enabling immediate withdrawal or use.

The great news is that GCash customers are able to enjoy these features free of charge—instantaneously and with the same ease as other GCash financial transactions and features.

Through such thoughtful innovations, Filipinos all over the country and in other places abroad who may be separated by miles can be brought together in celebrating small milestones through the power of their mobile phones and e-wallets.

GCash, being the leader in the mobile wallet segment, aims to continuously innovate and improve the user experience through these value-added services and features.

Globe signs MOA with Mayor Isko to deploy GoWiFi and to empower scholars with GCash

This is good news to all those who studies and work at these institution in Manila. GOWIFI will soon be available in Manila City Hall, Ospital ng Maynila, Tondo Medical Center, Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center, Tondo National High School, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and Universidad de Manila.

Globe has collaborated with the City of Manila to spearhead the digital transformation of the country’s capital by providing fast and reliable internet connectivity in key areas with GoWifi and delivering financial technology services to the city’s scholars with GCash.

Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu and Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) to make GoWiFi available in Manila.

The MOA also covers the use of GCash  as the official financial services platform to send allowances and other monetary benefits to about 15,000 scholars under the Office of the Manila City Mayor. Students will receive a corresponding GCash Mastercard to withdraw their cash allowance, and will also serve as their official identification card as a bonafide scholarship beneficiary of the city.

Cu said that the collaboration with the City of Manila is a first step in contributing to the city’s digital transformation initiatives. “Providing free WiFi services via GoWiFi and bringing financial inclusivity via GCash are just the initial undertakings from our end to contribute to the digitalization efforts of the city. Our goal is to provide the entire digital ecosystem of Globe for Manilenos to enjoy their digital lifestyle,” he revealed.

Cu also signified intention to improve the Globe network in the city to enable its digitalization. “We need to build additional 100 wireless sites to improve the signal in Manila,” Cu said.

Globe also has several ongoing corporate social responsibility initiatives as part of its sustainability program directly benefited Mañilenos, such as the Globe Plastic Xchange program held in Brgy. 455 last September 14 where single use plastics were collected in exchange for rewards points, turnover of information and communication technologies equipment and a computer lab to Manila Science High School, roll-out of Globe's Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP) to Manila Science High School students in 2016 to teach them responsible use of the internet and which will be adopted in the curriculum of the Department of Education for all public schools including those in Manila City, and Globe's participation in the Manila Bay coastal clean-up with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources this September 21.

GoWiFi continues its expansion plans nationwide, particularly in high-traffic areas like malls, hospitals, and schools to make high-quality internet connection accessible and affordable to more Filipinos. As of the first half of the year, GoWiFi is accessible in 2,500 sites nationwide, up by 500 sites from the previous year.

To date, GCash has made financial transactions easier for its 20 million registered users. And with over 70,000 partner merchants in the country, it truly has helped revolutionize the way Filipinos transact.

Got ID? Send money for free with GCash

We use identification cards or IDs in practically all aspects of our transactions, whether it’s government or private. It is as important as having cash, ATM cards or credit cards in our wallets.

In the Philippines, a valid ID is required when we open a bank account, apply for credit cards, apply for telephone or mobile phone lines, get our own meter for power and water, claim a package from the Post Office, or receive our orders from online shopping—all in the name of verification. Everyone asks for an ID.

One of the best uses of your valid ID is to get fully verified with GCash so you can send money to anyone, anytime for FREE. GCash has more than 30 partner banks, many of which are already charging fees for money transfers. With GCash, sending money is still free, and it’s just as safe and fast as online apps. This is my favorite feature of GCash because it’s so convenient, and frankly, I don’t want to pay any charges for money transfers.

Of course, you have to make sure you have enough funds in your mobile wallet to send money, and you can do this by cashing in. You can move money online from your bank to your GCash wallet if you’re a fully verified user. If you’re transferring money to GCash from an international account, you may choose from one of the remittance options like Western Union, AlipayHK or Moneygram. For over-the-counter cash-in, it’s as easy. There are more than 15,000 partner outlets that will accept transfers to your GCash account; choose just one.

Cashing out is also easy. Use any of the 20,000 ATMs across the country using your GCash Mastercard. You can also access the country’s first fully mobile credit line through GCredit, earn high intertest on saving through GSave, access investments options through Invest Money or insurance through GCash Insure.

So if you’re planning to access all the features of GCash, which I always recommend to my friends and family, first make sure you have a fully verified account. All you have to do is download the latest version of GCash app from Apple or Google store.
