A Greener Tomorrow: Watsons Offsets 4,000 Tons of CO2 Through Collective Action

On Earth Day, Watsons, the flagship health and beauty brand of AS Watson, announces an expanded partnership with ClimatePartner to enhance its carbon compensation initiative. For every purchase of selected Watsons Sustainable Choice products, we aim to offset over 4,000 tons of CO2emissions.

Inspiring Customers to Choose Wisely, Live Sustainably

To meet the growing customer demand for Sustainable Choices products, Watsons launched its carbon compensation initiative with ClimatePartner in 2023, initially featuring 7 product ranges. Now, this effort is expanding to include 30 product ranges, further advancing our unwavering commitment to sustainability. The initiative is launched at Watsons O+O (offline plus online) stores throughout Hong Kong, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, Turkey, and GCC markets.

Watsons is committed to offering more sustainable products while ensuring that every purchase makes a meaningful and impactful difference. In addition to ongoing reforestation efforts in Rimba Raya, Indonesia, Watsons is focusing on crucial afforestation in Dingxi, Mainland China — an area affected by desertification, droughts, and severe soil erosion. This initiative involves planting native tree species, selected for their resilience in semi-arid conditions, with the goal of transforming degraded farmland into thriving forests.

Beyond environmental benefits, the initiative creates employment opportunities for local residents in tree planting and forest maintenance, with a significant portion of roles filled by women, promoting gender equity and empowering local communities.

Since its launch, the initiative has been well-received by customers and has garnered positive feedback

Laine Molina, a customer from the Philippines, shared, “ I love how Watsons makes recycling so easy and rewarding. Dropping off my empty bottles during my regular shopping trips has become a habit. It's great to know that my small actions contribute to a cleaner environment, and the shopping vouchers are a nice bonus!”

Nicole Espinase from the Philippines added, “Choosing WatsonsSustainable Choices products just makes sense. It’s an easy way to be more mindful of what I buy without sacrificing quality. I like knowing that even small changes in my routine can make a difference, and it feels good to support brands that care about the environment too.”

In the Philippines, Watsons not only empowers customers but also supports the global sustainability campaign through its Go Green Living initiatives, which actively engage employees in hands-on environmental action. As part of these efforts, Watsons Philippines has planted over 5,800 trees during eco-tours and collected more than 30 sacks of trash and scrap wood during international coastal cleanups, helping prevent marine pollution and protect biodiversity. These local efforts demonstrate how Watsons also contributes to climate action through community-driven, employee-led programs that reflect the organization’s broader commitment to sustainability.

Inspiring customers to choose Sustainable Choices products is a vital step towards combating climate change and preserving the biodiversity that sustains us all. Together, we can create a ripple effect of positive change, shaping a brighter, greener future for generations to come. This Earth Day marks another significant milestone in Watsons’ journey toward climate action, empowering customers to Look Good. Do Good. Feel Great.

Watsons Strengthens Sustainability Efforts with Expanded Solar Energy Use Across Stores and Distribution Centers

Watsons, the country’s leading health, beauty, and wellness retailer, continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainability by expanding the use of renewable energy and energy-efficient solutions across its operations. With solar panels now powering more stores and distribution centers nationwide, Watsons is making meaningful progress in reducing its environmental impact and fostering a more sustainable retail landscape.

To date, 95 Watsons stores nationwide, along with all of Watsons’ distribution centers in Luzon and Visayas, are utilizing renewable energy. This transition not only reduces reliance on traditional power sources but also reflects Watsons’ dedication to adopting greener energy solutions.

As of December 2024, a total of 338.32 tons of CO2 have been reduced, 188 trees have been planted, and 135.74 tons of standard coal have been saved since the installation of solar panels. This initiative reduces Watsons' carbon footprint and significantly lowers operational energy costs while contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.

In 2024, Watsons Philippines achieved a milestone by launching its first-ever Greener Store in San Pedro, Laguna. This store, equipped with solar panels, partially operates on sustainable energy. It represents a positive step toward creating eco-conscious retail spaces that balance environmental responsibility with the quality shopping experience Watsons is known for.

Watsons’ sustainability efforts extend beyond solar energy. Across all its stores, Watsons utilizes LED lights that are free from toxic materials, 100% recyclable, and reduce energy consumption by up to a third. Additionally, the stores are equipped with inverter air conditioners and refrigerators, which consume 40% less energy than conventional units—further boosting energy efficiency and supporting the company’s commitment to sustainable operations.

"Our commitment to sustainability drives us to integrate renewable energy into our operations, transforming how we power our stores and distribution centers. With 95 stores and all distribution centers around the country now running on solar energy, we are not only reducing our environmental footprint but also setting a benchmark for sustainable retail practices. This is just the beginning, and we are excited to expand these initiatives to create a greener future," said Sharon Decapia, Watsons SAVP for PR, Marketing & Sustainability.

Looking ahead, Watsons plans to scale up its solar energy program by converting an additional 30 stores and one more distribution center to renewable energy this year. These initiatives underscore Watsons’ dedication to building a more sustainable future while continuing to provide the exceptional shopping experience its customers expect. They also reinforce Watsons’ position as a leader in sustainable retail practices, setting a high standard for the industry.

As Watsons innovates and expands its sustainability programs, it invites customers to be part of the journey. Visit your nearest Watsons store or browse conveniently through the Watsons App, available on the App Store or Google Play, to discover sustainable choices products and a wide range of health, wellness, and beauty essentials.

Watsons Champions Awareness and Early Detection of Type 1 Diabetes in Kids

Watsons, the Philippines' leading health, wellness, and beauty retailer, has led the way in discussing a rarely-talked-about health concern among
children: Type 1 Diabetes. Through its #Type1Story campaign, which features inspiring testimonials from kids living with T1D, Watsons aims to highlight the importance of early diabetes detection and screenings.

Understanding Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a lifelong autoimmune condition often diagnosed in childhood that prevents the pancreas from producing insulin, the natural hormone responsible for turning food into energy and regulating a person's blood sugar level. Without insulin, sugar builds up in the bloodstream, posing risks to the body and causing complications of diabetes. The significant rise indicates an increasing need for awareness and education about early diagnosis and proper management, blood sugar monitoring, balanced nutrition, proper diet and exercise, and emotional support.

Inspiring Stories of Children with Type 1 Diabetes

Watsons’ #Type1Story campaign features the journeys of three young Filipinos with T1D: Neo Eliseo Linga, Ana Sophia Valencia, and Liam James Lebron.  These children and their families exemplify courage and resilience in managing T1D; and highlight the importance of recognizing symptoms early and equipping families with the resources to handle the condition effectively.

L-R: Liam James G. Lebron, Ana Sophia R. Valencia, Neo Eliseo O. Linga

Neo Eliseo Linga

Neo, diagnosed at two, has been managing T1D for four years. His mother, Jhen, recounted how his son’s symptoms were initially misdiagnosed. It was not until a second ER visit that the doctor checked his blood sugar, discovering he was in a diabetic coma. This life-changing event ignited her commitment to Neo’s health—their family maintains a strict regimen of consistent blood sugar monitoring, insulin administration, and balanced meals.

Jhen also highlighted the need for action: “I initially felt overwhelmed and disheartened. However,  I quickly realized the importance of taking action and learning as much as possible to support Neo. We had to be resilient and bounce back for him, to keep him alive and healthy.”

Anna Sophia Valencia

Diagnosed at three, Sophia is now a thriving 10-year-old. Her mother, Joanne, recalled her harrowing experience when Sophia was rushed to the ER and went comatose—her daughter could not wake up because of extremely high sugar. After they came home from the hospital, they started throwing sugary drinks and snacks at home and replaced them with healthier choices.

Despite her daughter’s condition, Joanne emphasized balancing health management and parenthood: “As a parent, we want to preserve her quality of life. We want her blood sugar to be as stable as possible so that her organs, like her eyes, kidneys, etc, won’t suffer. At the same time, we also want to give her a normal childhood.”

Liam James Lebron

Diagnosed at four, Liam’s symptoms—frequent urination, excessive thirst, and weight loss—prompted his family to seek medical help. His mother, Majeg, shared that he manages his son's diabetes by setting a meal plan and portioning his food.

Majeg advises other parents: “Listen to your child, be observant, and seek help, especially from the doctors who can understand it most.”

Raising Awareness Through Watsons #Type1Story

As the first retailer in the country to actively advocate for diabetes awareness, Watsons commits in helping parents spot the early signs of Type 1 diabetes among their kids through the #Type1Story campaign.

“Diabetes, especially in children, calls for unwavering dedication, love, and resilience. The journey truly takes a village, but a diagnosis is not a limitation. Every challenge is an opportunity to discover strength, foster growth, and embrace courage.  At Watsons, we stand firmly with families on this journey. Through accessible diabetes management products, free health services, and awareness campaigns like #Type1Story, we are dedicated to empowering every child to live their best life and helping families create brighter, healthier futures.", said Jared De Guzman, Customer Director of Watsons Philippines.

Kids and parents from Type 1 Diabetes Society PH and T1 Diabetes Parents PH enjoy a day of fun activities

As part of the campaign, Watsons invited the Type 1 Diabetes Society PH and T1 Diabetes Parents PH to an insightful T1D Care Talk facilitated by Dra. Cristina Alberto, a Diplomate of the Philippine Pediatrics Society. The discussion focused on diabetes care and management for children and their parents, providing valuable information and support. The support of brand partners Abbott Diabetes Care, Roche Diabetes, Exeltis, and Propan TLC further strengthened the event.

To ensure accessibility and convenience, Watsons offers a wide range of diabetes care products in all Watsons stores nationwide and through the Watsons App. Watsons’ O+O (Offline and Online) retail channels bring healthcare closer to every home. Additionally, free clinic check-ups are conducted in select Watsons stores, empowering families to take proactive steps toward better health.

Through the #Type1Story campaign, Watsons hopes to help parents better understand their children's condition, enabling Type 1 diabetes patients to enjoy a more fulfilling and stress-free life—the kind of life every child deserves.

Brand partners from Abbot Diabetes Care, Exeltis, Propan TLC and Roche Diabetes were in attendance to offer free on-the-spot consultations and freebies.

Listerine partners with Operation Smile Philippines, Watsons to #GiftASmile to children with cleft issues

Having cleft conditions may impact both the physical and mental well-being of children with cleft and even their families. Especially among lower-income households, operations to treat cleft conditions are perceived to be expensive thus preventing them from seeking treatment. Recent studies have indicated that globally, 1 in 700 babies are born with a cleft lip and palate; and many do not know that cleft conditions are more than just treatable. That is why coming from National Cleft Awareness & Prevention Month, Listerine together with Operation Smile Philippines and Watsons launched the #GiftASmile campaign last September 4 to inspire Filipinos to make a difference and gift a smile to a child with cleft lip and palate.

(L-R: Anne Clutz with her kids, Mother of children with cleft care; Ken Tort, RSLP Head, Speech Language Pathology Unit of Operation Smile Philippines; Alde Po, Kenvue Philippines’ Franchise Head for Oral and Self-Care; Emiliano Romano, Executive Director of Operation Smile Philippines; Miggy Gamboa, Listerine Philippines Marketing Manager; Sharon Decapia, SAVP for Marketing, PR, and Sustainability of Watsons; Mikee Reyes, Listerine Ambassador)

Hosted by none other than Mikee Reyes, Listerine brand ambassador, the event aims to raise awareness about cleft lip and palate, and more importantly, to educate cleft patients and their families on the importance of good oral hygiene. Together with Operation Smile Philippines and Watsons, the goal of the campaign is to increase support needed for the program through volunteers, referrals, and donations.

As a longtime partner of Operation Smile Philippines, Listerine stresses the importance of oral health for children with cleft lip and palate, who are more susceptible to tooth decay due to increased exposure to germs and bacteria, making them more prone to oral diseases and infections. Miggy Gamboa, marketing manager for Listerine Philippines, emphasized “Listerine believes that healthy smiles are meant for all. As a mouthwash brand, Listerine advocates proper oral hygiene, especially for kids with cleft, so we can protect them from oral problems as early as possible to prevent further issues. Join us in educating the families of kids with cleft and teach them how to protect their mouths with proper oral health.”

“In the Philippines, there is an estimated 200,000 backlog of children with cleft lip and palate and many live in remote or rural communities. That's why we urge the public to refer any patient to Operation Smile Philippines because I believe that each of us can make a difference by helping to transform a life of a child, one smile at the time!’ said Operation Smile Philippines’ executive director Emiliano Romano.

Sharon Decapia, SAVP for Marketing, PR, and Sustainability of Watsons Philippines, also a longstanding partner of Listerine, highlighted, “As part of our mission to Look Good, Do Good, Feel Great, we continue to team up with Operation Smile Philippines to bring perfect smiles to children afflicted with cleft lip and palate through the #GiftASmile campaign. We are proud to have Listerine as a loyal partner since 2013 in transforming the lives of these children.”

To shed light on her story as a mother of a child with cleft, Anne Clutz shared heartfelt insights from her journey, “Providing free comprehensive cleft surgeries to kids with cleft, is so valuable, especially for less fortunate families. I just want to thank Operation Smile Philippines and Listerine for making life-changing surgeries accessible and promoting the importance of good oral hygiene.”

Giving more kids the chance to live with healthier smiles is the main goal of #GiftASmile. Listerine’s commitment to promoting oral health, combined with Operation Smile Philippines’ free comprehensive cleft care—including dental services, nutrition screening, and speech therapy—and Watsons’ advocacy in bringing healthy smiles, is what these children need for their confidence to thrive. To support Operation Smile Philippines’ efforts in providing speech therapy, Listerine will donate ₱10 to Operations Smile Philippines for every bottle sold* for speech therapy *for the first 50,000 bottles sold of any Listerine variant and size from Sept 22, 2024, until Dec 31, 2024. Per DOH-FDA CCHUHSRR Permit No. 0669 s. 2024.

To learn more about the #GiftASmile campaign, simply access the link https://linktr.ee/OpSmilePhil or call (+632) 8351-1925. You may follow Listerine on Facebook @ListerinePhilippines for more information and check out the merchandising materials posted in select Watsons Drugstores nationwide.

Watsons Honors Women's Strength and Achievement at the Move with PowHER Forum

Watsons recently hosted its first-ever "Move with PowHER" Forum, an inspiring event dedicated to women's wellness and empowerment. This groundbreaking forum encouraged women to embrace their authentic selves while celebrating their strength, grit, and achievements. It brought together women from diverse backgrounds—professionals, entrepreneurs, artists, community leaders, and more—to connect, share experiences, and uplift one another. Through engaging discussions on physical, emotional, and mental wellness, career growth, leadership, and advocacy, Watsons aimed to empower women to thrive in every aspect of their lives.

A Platform for Authentic Conversation and Empowerment

The event opened with a keynote speech by Lynn Pinugu, co-founder of She Talks Asia, an advocacy platform dedicated to sparking meaningful conversations about women’s strength, mental health, and gender equality. Drawing from her personal journey as a mother, wife, and advocate, Lynn shared how embracing authenticity has shaped her life and inspired her to drive change. She highlighted how She Talks Asia helps women redefine empowerment by breaking societal barriers and embracing their unique identities.

Lynn's message resonated deeply with Watsons' brand promise of "Look Good, Do Good, Feel Great," which champions the uniqueness of every woman and celebrates both inner and outer beauty. She highlighted how She Talks Asia aligns with this vision by encouraging women to embrace their individuality, support one another, and actively contribute to their communities. Through initiatives such as scholarship programs, employee volunteerism, and sustainability efforts, Watsons inspires women to make a positive impact on society. Watsons aims to empower women to "Move with PowHER," using their voices and talents to drive meaningful change, uplift one another, and confidently pursue their passions and achievements.

The forum featured insightful panel discussions that highlighted key areas where women are making a difference:

Physical & Mental Wellness:

Hazel Calawod, a sports occupational therapist, mental health professional, and coach of two-time gold Olympian Carlos Yulo, emphasized the importance of building physical and mental resilience. Drawing from her experience coaching elite athletes, she highlighted how mental toughness and physical strength are essential not only for peak performance in sports but also for navigating everyday challenges.

Women in Sports:

Nicole Dela Cruz, CEO of Women’s Run PH and an advocate for women in sports, discussed the significance of representation and resilience. She shared her journey of overcoming challenges in a male-dominated field, underscoring the vital role of mentorship and collaboration in empowering female athletes to pursue their passions.

Balancing Family & Work Life:

Sharon Decapia, SAVP of Watsons’ Marketing, PR & Sustainability, offered insights on balancing her roles as a corporate executive and mother. She emphasized that true empowerment involves embracing both family and career with purpose and confidence. Sharon provided practical advice on achieving personal and professional goals while prioritizing self-care and wellness, encouraging women to nurture themselves as they pursue their ambitions.

Women in Advocacy:

Lynn Pinugu returned to discuss the role of advocacy in driving social change. She emphasized how authentic conversations on mental health, gender equality, and self-empowerment break societal barriers, inspiring women to embrace their unique strengths and lead with purpose.

A key theme of the "Move with PowHER" forum was the importance of building supportive communities where women uplift one another. By nurturing these connections, Watsons continues to serve as a trusted partner, providing resources, products, and platforms that help women excel in all aspects of life.

The event redefined traditional notions of leadership, presenting it as a form of advocacy—whether for oneself, for other women, or for broader social issues. Attendees were inspired by stories of women leaders who are effecting meaningful change and discovered how they can also lead with purpose and passion. Through the "Move with PowHER" initiative, Watsons encouraged women to see leadership as a powerful opportunity to make a difference in their communities and beyond.

The forum also provided a vibrant atmosphere with interactive activities. Guests participated in a floral workshop where they created their own arrangements, reflecting the themes of growth and self-expression. Brand segments featured PH Care, Gynepro, Jeunesse, and partners like Modess, Charmee, Cleane, and Sisters, celebrating products that support women’s health and wellness.

"Move with PowHER" embodied Watsons' brand promise, championing every woman’s right to look good, do good, and feel great. By celebrating individuality, Watsons inspires women to embrace their unique beauty and confidence. Through initiatives like scholarship programs, volunteerism, and sustainability efforts, Watsons encourages women to give back to their communities. By nurturing their success and well-being, Watsons fosters vibrant, empowered communities where women can thrive.
