GROHE and everwave inaugurate clean-up platform for plastic-free rivers

 

Humanity’s modification of the water cycle has pushed the world beyond a safe operating space for continued life on Earth. With the destabilization of this vital resource, which affects the health of the entire Blue Planet, today’s World Ocean Day urges us to fight plastic waste more than ever as it attributes to the global water pollution problem and affects human health.

The brand pursues this goal by tackling plastic pollution from different angles with its Less Plastic Initiative, and lays the ground for a further increase in its collaborative sustainability efforts. GROHE’s partnership with everwave,  a social business with the mission of cleaning rivers of waste and protecting the ocean, is now taking new shape in the pilot deployment of the innovative cleaning platform HiveX, which was launched in the Bacchiglione river in Padua (Italy) in March 2022.



Supporting new innovations to tackle the plastic crisis

Having collaborated with everwave since 2019, GROHE is a proud contributor to the inauguration of the patented HiveX platform which was launched in Padua. The anchored, stationary platform uses the power of the river stream to continuously divert and store floating waste – it is energy-efficient and environmentally friendly since the passive technology uses energy from its environment to operate. The honeycomb-shaped design calms the current of the water as it flows through, ensuring that the plastic particles reach the surface and can be skimmed off. This also ensures that only waste is collected, and animals remain unharmed. Once installed, its internal architecture allows it to collect up to five tons of waste. This prevents the litter from reaching the Gulf of Venice, thereby hindering eventual damage to the environment and wildlife.

 

“Initially, we wanted to develop a technology for the ocean. As the research progressed, it became clear that it is more effective to start with rivers, since 80% of the waste in the oceans comes from there. Thanks to the modular, low-tech set-up of HiveX, it is a very simple solution that can be implemented in many rivers and is therefore able to help clean up waterways around the globe – without high costs and specialized staff. We are very grateful to GROHE for supporting our mission to protect the oceans for years and for making such a positive impact on the environment as a brand,” says Clemens Feigl, CEO & Co-Founder of everwave.

Designed to Flood

 

When asked about the state of global water security, those working in the development sector would usually summarize it in three “too’s”—too much, too little, too dirty. All three are true for many cities in Asia, and severe for cities in emerging economies like the Philippines. Those in the tropical belt suffer the worst typhoons, droughts, and polluted water sources, with sometimes much less resources to pour into solutions to address these issues. In 2018, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development or OECD estimated the water infrastructure gap to reach USD 6.7 trillion by 2030 and US$22.6 trillion by 2050. The good news is more designers and city leaders are tapping into nature for infrastructure services.


“Nature-based solutions,” Ross Mckenzie, Arcadis Head of South-East Asia & India, tells us what this direction is. “As urban areas expand, the amount of permeable land reduces, increasing flooding events, pollution, and ultimately the quantity and quality of water supply. Nature-based solutions offer a more sustainable, adaptable, and affordable way to achieve climate and flood resilience. They also have benefits that support the UN Sustainable Development Goals. They redevelop the natural water cycle process, reduce the peak flows, allow the water to be naturally retained, reduce the flooding risk, and provide a water source during the dry seasons. Kind of like the natural cycle coming back.”

 

Sometimes called blue, green, or green-gray infrastructure, the premise for its design is simple: work with nature and not against it. It can be executed at multiple scales. “It's like bringing the concrete jungle back into the natural water cycle,” says Mckenzie. Buildings can integrate gardens to assist cooling and rainwater capture. Streets can help recharge groundwater better through permeable pavements, rain gardens, and grass swales. Concrete revetments or retaining walls of canals and streams can be replaced with more vegetated edges better suited for pedestrian activity. Public parks can be designed with water retention capacities so that extra water during the monsoon season or a typhoon can be directed to it. Then, when the river level is low, during the summer or a dry spell, the parks discard it into waterways to be used. It could be as simple as reforesting the watershed, waterway edges, and mangroves in order to make existing gray infrastructure more resilient.

 

The World Bank and World Resources Institute’s 2019 report Integrating Green and Gray: Creating Next Generation Infrastructure offers a couple of case studies of the benefits. For example, the filtration services provided by better watershed management in Portland, Maine, replaced the need for a water filtration plant, saving the city an estimated USD 97 to 155 million over 20 years. Residential and industrial infrastructure in the Philippines avoid more than USD 1 billion annually in damages through mangroves, reefs, and other natural systems.

 

While the severity of rainfall and drought are water stressors not within direct human control, efficiencies in our water utility systems are. “One of the biggest wasters is non-revenue water (NRW), the water that never makes it to consumers. Most of the loss is caused by leakage through pipe bursts that you don’t know about for weeks,” says McKenzie. The International Water Association estimates that emerging markets have experienced up to 75% NRW. Water losses cannot be eliminated, but ideally water service providers should lower it to below 20%.

 

Utility providers have a lot of aging infrastructure to upgrade. This does not have to be the case for household water mains. There is already technology available for home and business owners to make sure leaks are immediately addressed and wastage reduced. Smarter water systems can start at home, informing us of our own consumption habits so we can recalibrate our lifestyles, and also educate the succeeding generation.

GROHE curated some helpful New Year’s Resolutions as an inspiration to start

Happy New Year 2022? The year has come to a sudden end – at least resource wise. July 29th, 2021 marks the day where we have consumed and used all ecological resources and services that the Earth can regenerate in that year. The later this day arrives the better we managed our resource consumption. However, the past decades have shown that the date tends to be earlier every year. While last year’s Earth Overshoot Day fell on August 22nd, pushed back by the pandemic related lockdowns, this year’s resources will be consumed three weeks earlier, with the main drivers being the increased carbon footprint and the deforestation. For reference, in 1970, it fell on December 29th – seven months later than this year. 


But how can we #MoveTheDate? Projections show that reducing global carbon emissions by 50 percent would already move Earth Overshoot Day by 93 days – which is more than three months. Manufacturing brands such as GROHE are therefore working on reducing their emissions drastically. Since April 2020, GROHE has been one of the first leading manufacturers in the sanitary industry to produce CO2-neutral. However, CO2 emissions are only one part since there are plenty of other resources that need to be handled with care, such as water or other natural resources. For this reason, GROHE focuses on products that are not only water- and energy-efficient, but also follow the Cradle to Cradle® (C2C) design concept: a product is designed and manufactured with the intent of using its components in its end-of-life-phase for the creation of new products. To start this circular journey, GROHE launched four bestsellers as Cradle to Cradle Certified® variants at Gold level.

New Year’s Resolution #1: Collecting rainwater to water our plants  

Plants are craving for water, especially in summer. However, we can reduce our water consumption easily by collecting rainwater in jars or barrels and using them to water our plants. This contributes to counteract water scarcity while also having the potential to save emissions as the more plants we grow the more carbon dioxide is absorbed.

 

New Year’s Resolution #2: Using soap bars to save plastic 

Soap and shampoo bars are the perfect solution to start abandoning plastic from our bathrooms. With products ranging from body scrubs, body soap, facial wash to shampoo and conditioner, the variety is now meeting individual preferences and needs, while replacing numerous plastic bottles and jars. Soap bars are also perfect for travelling as they can be easily transported in a little bag.



New Year’s Resolution #3: Increasing shelf life of food 

Often food goes to waste unintentionally by simply going bad faster than we thought. However, there are some helpful tricks that increase the shelf life of food. Storing an apple with potatoes prevents them from sprouting. Removing strawberries from their original packaging in a glass jar makes them last longer by weeks. Storing spring onions in water does not only increase their shelf life but also lets them continue to grow.


New Year’s Resolution #4: Closing the pot for cooking 

There are several smart and easy ways to save energy in our homes. One is to cook with the lid closed since it takes up to 1/3 less energy, amounting to savings around 46 Euros and 100kg CO2 emissions per year, if we use the lid in five cooking sessions per week.



New Year’s Resolution #5: Bringing vegetable bags for shopping

Whether at the weekly market or in supermarkets: vegetables and fruit do not need to be wrapped in plastic or paper bags, which are usually thrown away after being used, anyway. Convenient helpers such as vegetable bags with which you can pack your loose vegetables and fruits, are very useful here. A little advice: the bags are usually very small and handy – just place them in pockets and jackets, so you always have a vegetable bag with you, even when you go shopping spontaneously.

 

With these New Year’s Resolutions at heart, let’s start the new resource year 2022 better than the last and #MoveTheDate as much as we can collectively, by applying our greatest strengths: foresight, innovation and care for each other and our environment.

Grohe presents an OktoberFEAST for the Senses








GROHE, the global leader in luxury bathroom fittings and fixtures in partnership with Wilcon Depot, the country's leading home improvement and construction supply retailer, took guests on a visual, aural and culinary journey last weekend as it presented the GROHE OKTOBERFEAST FOR THE SENSES at the BGC Amphitheatre last October 20, 2017.



It was a unique  sensory experience for guests as the  high-end German brands installed several exhibits from morning to midnight. The event started with a tempting indulgence of German food, products and fun.


Grohe is known worldwide for its innovative German design and precision technology. Grohe Oktoberfeast for the Senses offered an extravagant experience that will make you want to change your bathroom as your personal space for the most satisfying showering experience. 


During the event, Grohe revealed two of its most game-changing products that have won accolades and patrons the world over; Aquasymphony Luxury Shower that is designed to transform the concept of showering into ultimate luxury SPA experience and Sensia Arena Spalet Shower Toilet that is created to maximize personal comfort and hygiene through gentle and smart cleaning.Adding up excitement and enjoyment, ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra performed the finest and most loved German classical music and arias under the baton of Maestro Gerard Salonga with soprano Lara Maigue, and DJ Hannah Ichiko played with the beat that filled the night of chill music.
