Know these four easy ways to maintain healthy oral hygiene amid the pandemic

Oral care has become a challenge in the pandemic. The drastic change in diet and lifestyle, as well as the constant wearing of face masks, have led to dental problems such as plaque, bad breath or halitosis, swollen gums, lesions, and more.


These oral problems have been made worse by lockdowns, which made people understandably nervous to seek a professional care. According to study, 70% of respondents have expressed fear of visiting their dentist. Of that number, 56% reduced their visits or did not schedule an appointment at all.

It’s possible to maintain healthy oral hygiene at home even amid the pandemic. 

Here are some easy tips:

Brush teeth effectively. The easiest tip would be to brush teeth frequently and effectively. Dentists recommend brushing at least twice daily in gentle and circular motions to efficiently remove plaque. Plaque is a thin film of bacteria that forms on the surface of teeth and hardens into tartar. If left untreated, tartar can cause bad breath, destroy the outer layer of teeth, and lead to gum disease. It’s also recommended to gently brush the tongue since plaque builds up there.

Floss. Brushing may not be enough as bristles sometimes cannot reach bacteria and food stuck between the teeth, that’s where floss comes in. Aside from effectively removing deep-seated food particles and bacteria, floss can reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease. Proper flossing means wrapping the cord around the teeth in a “C” shape and gently moving it below the gum line and back up. It is also recommended to floss at least once daily.

Don’t forget the mouthwash. After brushing and flossing, wrap up your daily oral routine with mouthwash. This kills harmful bacteria that can be found between the teeth and on the tongue. It also freshens the breath, especially after a long day of wearing a face mask.


Change your diet. It comes as no surprise that the food you eat has a direct effect on your oral health. Food high in sugar, starch, and carbohydrates results in more plaque and tooth decay. A medical expert has sounded the alarm on early and proper detection of dementia in the Philippines which is often misinterpreted as an aging problem or being ulyanin and malilimutin in Filipino terms. 

 

In the first episode of a webinar series called “Malilimutin: Dahil nga ba sa katandaan?" 

 

Neurologist and dementia specialist Dr. Jacqueline Dominguez shared her knowledge on dementia and how to differentiate it from mere forgetfulness on the part of the patient.

 

HI-Eisai sponsored the webinar to raise awareness on dementia and related types of diseases. 

 


"Dementia is a collection of symptoms with decline in cognition, change in behavior, and impairment of daily function," Dominguez said in the live webinar held last Thursday (Sept 9). 

She enumerated the types of dementia, including the most common one, Alzheimer's disease. Other types are fronto-temporal, Parkinson's dementia, dementia due to traumatic brain injury, and dementia due to depression and other medical conditions. 

 

For her part, digital influencer Nina Rayos acknowledged that there is still a lack of awareness when it comes to dealing with dementia. 

 

Rayos is known in the social media through her vlogs featuring her mother, DonyaToyang, who has been clinically diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. 

 

She shared how it took seven years before her family learned that Donya Toyang was forgetful not due to old age, but was inflicted with the disease.

"My mother started to show early symptoms of [Alzheimer's disease] in 2012, but we only just had her diagnosed in 2019. We didn't really think about it so much back then, thinking that maybe she's just simply getting old. She forgets a lot of things, and she always misplaces house keys and money," Rayos said. 

 

What triggered her to finally bring her mother to the hospital was when the latter was hallucinating. 


Rayos recalled how DonyaToyang started to become confused on basic day-to-day activities such as cooking, and began to forget important details in her life such as the name of her children and granddaughter and the fact that her parents and other loved ones already passed away. 

 

Dominguez said disorientation or hallucination is one way to differentiate mere forgetfulness from dementia. She said that is most likely dementia when someone's moment of disorientation already makes it hard for her to go back to reality and determine what's real or not. 

"Early diagnosis prevents the disease from progressing. Elders suffering from dementia are treated badly because the family doesn't really understand their situation," Dominguez explained. 

 

Dominguez then highlighted the importance of the role of family and relatives in spotting the aforementioned symptoms. She said it’s the patients’ loved ones that can help direct them to appropriate medical responses to their condition.

Meanwhile, Dominguez said other symptoms to watch out for are extreme cases of memory loss wherein the potential patient could no longer remember a lot of things; when the person is already having difficulty in performing tasks that she or he is used to doing; when the person is already having poor judgment.

Emirates has resumed scheduled passenger services to Manila, Clark and Cebu to all eligible travellers

Emirates has announced it will operate special commercial flights in October, to provide additional capacity for Filipino citizens from Dubai to Manila, who meet eligibility requirements. The airline will be operating “Bayanihan” flights on EK332 on October 2, 5, 9, 16, 23, and 30. 

 

Emirates has resumed scheduled passenger services to Manila, Clark and Cebu to all eligible travellers who are eligible however capacity restrictions apply, until further notice, as mandated by the authorities in the Philippines. The special flights provide additional opportunities to secure bookings. Customers in the UAE can contact +9714 274 9199 to book tickets on special flights.

Only Filipino citizens currently in the UAE will be eligible to book seats on the special flights, and the following requirements will apply:

 

·       A 10-day facility-based quarantine, with the date of arrival being the first day, will be applicable to all passengers, followed by a four-day home-based quarantine. 

·       Allocations of quarantine facilities at designated hotels will be coordinated by Emirates along with Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and/or the Department of Tourism (DOT). 

 

With the lifting of the ban on travellers from the UAE by the Philippines authorities, which took effect in September, the airline has resumed daily services to and from Manila, while five weekly flights to Clark and twice weekly flights to Cebu are available for Filipinos and foreign nationals to book. From October 9 to 30, Emirates will operate eight flights weekly to and from Manila, with an additional flight on Saturdays, operating as EK334 and EK335.
