FutKal partners with LBC to rehabilitate Yolanda victims

FUTKAL FRENZY.

Tondo kids of the FutKal program enjoying a fun and challenging training camp at the Don Bosco Field

Football has become the most loved and watched sports in our country next to basketball,  in a basketball crazed country such as ours. It sparked the interest of everyone and suddenly the sports that we used to snubbed becomes a staple in every sport minded filipinos. As of this writing, everyone whose a fan has seen or watched any 2014 FIFA games online or on TV,  and as a football spectator myself, I am  rooting for one great team to emerge as winner. Its about time to concentrate on this sport and we are glad that Phil. Azkals has sparked the interest and has been a steady team for us filipinos since then.

Kicking off trauma through FutKal

Countless metrics have identified Football as the most popular sport in the world, but even its global acceptance does not begin to capture the artistry and spirit of the game. Indeed, it is a sport that can unite entire nations, and when internationally competitive tournaments are staged, people from all walks of life are momentarily riveted.

Notwithstanding the glamour and spectacle involved at the highest levels of the game, Football is firmly embedded at the grassroots level. Due in great part to its minimal requirements, even a patch of dry land, bare feet, and a worn out ball can provide hours of fun and enjoyment. It is this profound modesty that inspired the people behind FutKal to use football as a means to rebuild the morale of calamity victims.

FutKal– an abbreviation of “FutbolsaKalye” – is a non-profit organization aimed to promote football through sports programs to open up educational and financial opportunities for its beneficiaries, which are mostly children from urban poor and devastated communities. In short, the organization views football as the perfect vehicle to teach the values of discipline, sportsmanship, and fairplay, and to bring back meaningful play to tragedy-stricken areas.

“FutbolsaKalye doesn’t necessarily mean that you play on the streets,” FutKal Founder Peter Amores clarified. “Kalye or street is a symbol of equality, an avenue where everybody has the freedom to express themselves with the ball, with the game. No restrictions, and just fair play,” he continued.

The organization started out in 2006 and has been touring the country to recruit potential FutKaleros, whom Amores defines as ‘football enthusiasts that manifest a positive attitude and a purpose driven life.’

One of the most noteworthy projects of FutKal is “Kick for Life”, which was implemented in Tondo. The program has helped transform countless Tondo youths into healthy, upstanding, and responsible citizens. FutKal has also branched out to many other locales in Quezon City, Bukidnon, and Cebu, riding the momentum from the success of their efforts in Tondo.

Currently, FutKal is exploring the possibility of using the program to rehabilitate and debrief victims of calamities, especially children, in order to help them recover from the mental trauma they experienced. The organization is currently partnering with the LBC Foundation to implement this program on survivors of the recent Yolanda typhoon in Leyte.

Best Actress Eugene Domingo shears you up in Barber's Tales

I am a fan of  Ms. Eugene Domingo since her Kimmy Dora days. She is the only  comedienne that would make me pee in my pants. I had no bladder control. That is how effective she is in comedy. I had an opportunity to meet her in person recently.  I had some question prepared for her but another reporter blew it away.  She gamely answered the questions that was thrown her way though.  She lose some weight and has that look befitting of a season actress. (She bagged the Best Actress Award in Tokyo).  I have watched her career as a comedienne from playing a sidekick role to a lead role.   I just felt lonely after learning that she does not have an entry for this year's MMFF, but glad that I would watch her 4 months in advance, not in a comedy flick but in a drama movie.  She told the media , she gave her 101% commitment, time, passion, tears, physical, mental, spiritual and everything in this film. "I dont mind if Barber's Tales would be my last film", she added.  Barber's Tales garnered an actress award for her at the 26th Tokyo International Film Festival. I  would just like to discover what's the buzz about the movie, to let it shift her from comedy to drama.  Barber's Tales will be showing here in Manila on August 13, 2014.

BARBER’S TALES From the creators of the internationally acclaimed film BWAKAW comes a provocative period drama about female empowerment and breaking gender barriers.

THE STORY
Barber’s Tales revolves around newly widowed Marilou who inherits the town’s only barbershop from her husband — a business that has been passed down by generations of men in her husband’s family. With no other means of support, she musters the courage to run the barbershop. Despite the skills she gained from years of observation and assisting her husband, as a female barber she fails to attract any customers. Nevertheless, things take an unexpected turn when Marilou discovers what she is truly made of -- in the midst of mockery from men, and the support of an unexpected circle of sisters.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT:
Set at the onset of martial law during the Marcos dictatorship in the 1970s, the conservative setting of Barber’s Tales provides the perfect backdrop against which I explore the social taboos and moral values of the time to tell the story of Marilou, a woman who is caught between old traditions and modern dilemmas. Recently widowed and childless, she supports herself by continuing her husband’s barbershop. But as the first female barber in a male dominated small town, her liberal views and practices are met with opposition. As the entire country is stripped of its basic rights, Marilou must find the courage to stand out and stand up for herself.

As the title suggests, Barber’s Tales is structurally a narrative made up of tales from the barbershop, vignettes about Filipino rural life held together by themes that have personal resonance, including sexuality, identity and self-liberation.

Barber’s Tales is the second in a planned trilogy set in rural Philippines. Each film is a character study about varying kinds of isolation. Bwakaw (2012) tells the story of a grumpy aging gay man who thinks that all there is to look forward to in life is death.. Mga Kuwentong Barbero (Barber’s Tales, 2013) is about a widow imprisoned  by gender expectations in the 1970s. Ama Namin (our Father, now  follows the plight of a boy who enters the seminary to be with the only family he has left: his father, who is a priest.

Prior to production, Barber’s Tales won 4 awards, including Best Project, at the 2013 HongKong Asia-Film Financing Forum, an annual project market for internationalfilmmakers and financiers.

Enjoy Triple O's by White Spot in Manila

Bacon cheddar  (php390) combo

 Triple O's

I never know about Triple O's until I got an invite to try out their burgers and the famous milkshakes on the store's exclusive launch at SM Megamall. The place is relatively small but I love its laid back friendly interior that adorned in green and grey, I love the color combination, it has a youthful vibe to it which makes me feel at home.  I learned their history through these walls.  I ordered their 3 cheese pasta and dippin chicken and a strawberry milkshake.

3 cheese pasta with dippin chicken (php275)  combo (php365)
Their 3 cheese pasta is the right kind of spaghetti for me, because I am all for italian taste, the more tomato sauce, the more lycopene you can get,   plus it has cheeses that compliments the pasta overall. This is a complete meal since it has 2 pieces fried chicken to partner with. The chicken is soft, tasty and freshly cooked.

My strawberry milkshake

Their milkshake is the tastiest, creamiest, with the right amount of sweetness.  It is best to partner with your favorite burger or any meal that you will order. This sealed the taste of my pasta and chicken.  Their milkshakes are available in Vanilla and Strawberry flavor.

Bacon Cheddar and Strawberry Milkshake

My seatmate ordered Bacon Cheddar which is big and  meant for sharing.  I got a small quick bite, and the 100% Canadian grilled beef is juicy, with cheddar cheese dripping on the side and  bacon topped the whole burger experience. Any burger lover would fall for their Bacon Cheddar. And I have to taste their bestseller "Monty Mushroom" yet.

Onion Rings

Their onion rings I should say is the best onion rings I have ever tasted. It has a special sauce to partner with. It is crispy, tasty, not soggy,  just cooked to perfection. It is plain delicious and not dripped with oil. I love the bite size, I will be back for these Onion rings, for sure.

White Spot Restaurants has a passion for using the freshest & finest ingredients. And it all began with a hustling visionary named Nat Bailey, who started what is arguably the most enduring, most successful restaurant chain in North America.

You can visit Triple O’s at  the third level of SM Megamall’s Atrium.

“Triple O” came from the shorthand language of the drive-in service attendants, otherwise known as "carhops". When guests at the drive-in chose from mayonnaise and relish, their order slips were printed with X's and O's. Three O's on the slip meant plenty of everything, and that's exactly what Triple O's by White spot serves on their menu.

Triple O’s Quick Service Restaurants serve the same great taste and quality of White Spot, including 100% fresh Canadian beef, fresh-cut fries, and hand-scooped shakes, in a smaller footprint. Triple O’s can be found in free-standing locations, street-fronts and select BC ferries, Chevron stations, and arenas across British Columbia, in Alberta and even Hong Kong.

For any Filipino who has ever spent some time in Canada, Triple O’s by White Spot
will surely be a familiar name. Indeed, as Canada’s very first drive-in restaurant
(established by their founder Nat Bailey in 1928), its place in history has already been
assured; but it is their legendary Triple O’s
burger that propels the brand into iconic
status.

Triple O’s’ claim to have the “sauciest, juiciest, tastiest, bestest burgers around” may
appear to be hyperbole, but the proof is in the pudding – or in this case, the patty. Triple
O’s elevates the simple concept of the burger with their premium-grade 100% Canadian
beef patties. Numerous gourmands agree that Canadian beef is a few notches superior
to its American counterpart, due to Canada’s strict screening systems on beef
standards and food safety. Likewise, Triple O’s is well known for their meticulous grilling
technique, which optimizes the essence and flavor of the beef.

Triple O’s offers this unstoppable burger combination in a dizzying array of styles and
variations, which can come a la carte or in combo meals of fries and a drink.
Enthusiastic customers can even overload their burgers with extra toppings, from a
grand selection of cheeses, bacon, and grilled mushrooms. Triple O’s also caters to the
popular local preference for fish or chicken burgers, perfectly grilling these patties to a
crunchy, juicy, and flavorful delight.

For those who have a hankering for something other than a fantastic burger, Triple O’s
provides a selection of other mains, such as chicken, pasta, and fish dishes.

“DELIVER US FROM EVIL" EXORCISM FRIGHTENS ERIC BANA

SUBJECT OF “DELIVER US FROM EVIL” FRIGHTENS ERIC BANA

One of filmdom's most engaging actors, Eric Bana (“Star Trek,” “Lone Survivor”) stars in Columbia Pictures' supernatural thriller “Deliver Us from Evil” as real-life New York police officer Ralph Sarchie who joins forces with an unconventional priest schooled in the rituals of exorcism, to combat the frightening and demonic possessions that are terrorizing their city.

Bana was drawn to the role of Ralph Sarchie in because he saw something in director Scott Derrickson’s previous work which transcended the horror genre. “Scott’s movies, like `The Exorcism of Emily Rose' and `Sinister,' are really incredibly written and performed character films that are set in genres. And when I met with him, I felt that I just had to do the film. He has total respect for the genre, knows more about it than anyone I’ve ever met, but understands the importance of character and story.

“I was also attracted to the character of Ralph Sarchie,” continues the actor. “I was very much intrigued by the genre and subject matter that was wrapped around the story, but when I read the script, what jumped out to me the most was a brilliantly written, intense and fascinating character who I thought would be a really great challenge to play, and the kind of character that I like to go to the movies to see.

“I liked the fact that Sarchie was this really tough, experienced street cop in the Bronx, who ends up being exposed to a world that’s so far removed from the practicalities of police work. At the beginning, we have a character whose belief system is founded purely on facts and physical things. Ralph’s journey is what makes it so intriguing. This is the one time in his career where procedure is blocked because of inner demons and his past doings, and he has to deal with that. In this case, Ralph has to deal with something very dark from his past, and deal with it in a very dramatic way in order to move forward as a person.

It’s a very relatable theme for people who are carrying secrets and things they’ve done in the past that they’d like to shake off. I like to believe that we don’t. We pay for it eventually, somehow, some way.”

Bana spent considerable time with the real Ralph Sarchie, but rather than talk about the film, “We would just sit around and chat. It was very helpful for me to meet Ralph prior to production because there was a certain physicality to him that was very important. Ralph would be very important to us throughout production as an adviser regarding the police work, but outside those parameters it was two guys chatting. He’s a really great guy.”

The subject matter of “Deliver Us From Evil” raised questions to be pondered not only by audiences, but also by the cast members. “During pre-production,” says Bana, “I was exposed to some materials and tapes about exorcism which, on the one hand, were beyond fascinating, beyond interesting and beyond scary. They are materials not for public consumption, so I had mixed feelings about seeing some of them…one in particular did have an effect on me, and I found it extremely difficult sleeping and being in a room by myself for a week after seeing it.

“My thoughts are that there is definitely something that exists which, unfortunately, leads to a very large amount of human suffering,”concludes Bana. “However that’s described or diagnosed is actually completely irrelevant. At the center of it is a massive amount of suffering and pain. Ralph Sarchie, in doing what he calls ‘The Work,’ goes and helps people deal with these things. I have no doubts that there will be moments when audiences will be truly scared, but it’s really something truly different, which is always exciting.

I think that a lot of Sarchie’s journey in the film, whilst sometimes brutal, is fascinating, entertaining and thought-provoking.”

Opening across the Philippines on July 02, “Deliver Us From Evil” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

Michael Kors is pleased to announce a new, limited-edition watch as part of the 100 Series, the specially designed watch collection offered in support of the brand’s global WATCH HUNGER STOP campaign. For each 100 Series watch sold, 100 children in a hunger-stricken area will receive a nutritious meal.*

The new, limited-edition watch is being launched to mark the second year of Michael Kors’ long-term partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), an initiative dedicated to helping end world hunger.

As with the other styles in the 100 Series, the new watch design is based on Michael Kors’ bestselling Runway watch, this time in rose gold-tone stainless steel with a detailed map of the world etched on a striking gray-blue dial. Michael Kors’ signature is engraved on the back, along with the campaign name, WATCH HUNGER STOP, and the messages “1 WATCH = 100 MEALS” and “LIMITED EDITION.” The unisex design is available in mid-sized and oversized versions and will be sold in specially designed packaging that highlights the goal to WATCH HUNGER STOP. “GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY” FROM COMIC BOOK TO BIG SCREEN

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of “Iron Man,” “Thor,” “Captain America” and “The Avengers,” comes a new team — the “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe.

To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

Directed by James Gunn (“Slither”) from his screenplay, with a story by Nicole Perlman and Gunn, the all-star cast includes Chris Pratt (“Zero Dark Thirty”) as Peter Quill, Zoe Saldana (“Star Trek Into Darkness”) as Gamora, Dave Bautista (“Riddick”) as Drax the Destroyer, featuring Vin Diesel (“Fast and Furious”) as Groot, two-time Academy Award nominee Bradley Cooper (“American Hustle”) as Rocket, Lee Pace (“The Hobbit”) as Ronan the Accuser, Michael Rooker (AMC’s “The Walking Dead”) as Yondu, Karen Gillan (BBC TV’s “Doctor Who”) as Nebula, two-time Academy Award® nominee Djimon Hounsou (“Gladiator”) as Korath, with Academy Award® nominee John C. Reilly (“Chicago”) as Rhomann Dey, six-time Academy Award® nominee Glenn Close (“Fatal Attraction”) as Nova Prime Rael, and Academy Award® winner Benicio Del Toro (“Traffic”) as The Collector.

Created by Arnold Drake and Gene Colan, the Guardians of the Galaxy were introduced in 1969 as a team of heroes in the 31st century—each member the last of his kind. The idea of creating a cinematic project from that concept had much going for it—not only a remarkable group of characters, operating within an amazing universe, but also an opportunity to explore another side of the Marvel Universe, contemporaneous with The Avengers, maintaining the scope, action and humor, as well as a sense of the high stakes at its core, which made that film such a success.

There was strong interest at Marvel Studios to do a space epic and to expand their Cinematic Universe in a new direction, despite the risks involved. Says Producer Kevin Feige: “‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is the riskiest movie we’ve done since ‘Iron Man’ but in many ways that makes it the most exciting movie we’ve done since ‘Iron Man.’ It means we can surprise people and exceed expectations. I love the notion of being able to introduce some originality, although all of it is based on the great work that was done in the comics yet few people are aware of them. I hope it feels like something very new and very fresh.”

Getting the tone right was of paramount importance to the filmmakers, who wanted a balanced mix of humor, emotion and action. This desire informed their search for the right director for the material. Explains Feige, “It is important to us that a filmmaker bring a vision and have a handle on the characters and be able to bring them to life in an unexpected and unique and three-dimensional way. We wanted a director who could bring those elements and a slightly skewed sense to the film, and James Gunn has that voice and that vision.”

After meeting with Kevin Feige, director James Gunn was hooked. “I could see the film in my head, how it would look, what the shooting style should be,” says Gunn.

Gunn was also excited at the prospect of introducing the characters into Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, and introducing a global audience to the Guardians. Acknowledging the freedom he had since they were relatively unknown, Gunn remarks, “I think ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ gave me more freedom simply because there aren’t as many rabid fans of Guardians as there are of say The Avengers, or as many Guardians comic books, and so I have been able to recreate the Guardians more for the screen without worrying that the audience will have a different expectation of the characters.”

While there have been several incarnations of the Guardians over the years, Marvel had planned from the early development stages to draw from the Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning run of the comic 2008 for the film. Gunn embraced that direction and comments, “We’re using the characters that Abnett and Lanning used and their tone is both humorous and dark, an interesting mix, which I think we have in the film too.”

Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” opens in Philippine theaters on Thursday, July 31, 2014.

For the Love of Football

For most countries around the world, football is regarded as a religion as the relationship between the fans and football transcends to even more than sports, with a love for this game making and igniting a unique passion that drives them from simple joys to an extravagant celebrations. A passion that started with a spherical leather ball and has been passed on from generation to generation, fan to fan, and foot to foot.

In true support of football this season, Brazil’s well-loved flip-flops brand, Havaianas spreads the football love to our feet by coming out with a limited edition Teams collectiona special set of flip-flop styles that celebrate football’s greatest teams and enable football aficionados to pledge their allegiance to their favorite football team in true fashion. With a roster of 16 countries, this assortment features designs of the world’s most iconic football national teams led by the football powerhouses Brazil, Argentina, France, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Portugal among others.

For PHP 1145, you have a chance to channel the pride of these nations with its symbolic styles true to its country. The project specifically aims to help the children from affected communities recover from the trauma, rebuild their lives and put them on the road to a brighter future through football programs.

In partnership with Project Headshot Clinic and celebrated photographer, Niccolo Cosme, Havaianas is joined by over 40 individuals, a mix of football enthusiasts, coaches, players, and some celebrities that have an affinity with football and sports in general, all with a great love for football to inspire support for the cause and help spread awareness for the advocacy. SUPERGA X VERSUS VERSACE COLLABORATION

SUPERGA and VERSUS VERSACE announced a new collaboration of collectable pieces that bring together two iconic Italian brands.

The collaboration begins with a special edition of the historical SUPERGA 2750 model, made using one of the key prints from the VERSUS VERSACE FW 14-15 collection.

The print symbolizes the rebellious new style of VERSUS VERSACE, with clashing vivid colors and cut-up images of the brand, such as baroque detailing, the Greek key, and the VERSUS VERSACE logo.

The first SUPERGA x VERSACE VERSUS model is made with a cotton upper and a sole of vulcanized natural rubber, with a fabric SUPERGA label. The VERSUS VERSACE logo sits at the heel, which alongside the personalized box testifies to the uniqueness of the collaboration.

Limited pieces from the collection will be available in SUPERGA stores in the Philippines starting Fall 2014.

The University of the Philippines Diliman has been declared champion of the eighth CFA Institute Research Challenge Global Final, on June 17, 2014 at the Palawan Ballroon, EDSA Shangri-la Hotel, having won the Global Final in 2010. It is an annual competition considered ‘the investment Olympics’ for university students. The UP Diliman team beat out strong competition from the other finalists, Politecnico di Milano of Italy (representing Europe, Middle East, and Africa) and the University of Missouri, Kansas City (representing the Americas.)

The victory in Singapore earned UP Diliman the distinction of being the only university to win the Global Final twice, recognizing the world-class talent of future finance professionals in the Philippines and the Asia-Pacific region.

“The UP Diliman team has proven again to be solid representatives of the future of our industry,” says April Lynn Tan, CFA, president of CFA Society Philippines.

“The team’s victory is an impressive feat as over 800 universities worldwide vied to make it to the finals and brings great honor to our country. We thank the team’s mentor and teachers who guided the team toward success. These aspiring financial professionals are the agents of the next era of finance – one of integrity, stewardship, and professional excellence. Through their strong leadership, knowledge, and ethics, we can move closer toward a more trustworthy finance industry.”

Commenting on nurturing financial professionals, Mr. Hans B. Sicat, President and CEO of the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) said, “The PSE is committed to providing continuing education to market participants and investors. As such, it commends the CFA Institute for its efforts in supporting the development of the next generation of financial professionals through the Research Challenge. The future of investment research looks even better when students are exposed to the excellence and ethical standards observed by CFA charterholders, and the team from the UP Diliman is to be congratulated for being the best in the field.”

CFA Institute, the global association of investment professionals, and its over 140 member societies worldwide including CFA Society Philippines, host local and regional Research Challenge competitions leading up to the Global Final, where the winning teams from the three regional finals compete. In 2013-2014, more than 3,700 students from over 800 universities around the world participated in the Research Challenge.

The Research Challenge offers students the unique opportunity to learn applicable professional skills from leading industry experts and gain real-world experience as they assume the role of a research analyst. The UP team of Geoffrey Archangel Bautista, Diego Mikhail de Ocampo, Nigel Williamson Lee, Corrine Francesca Reyes, and Miguel Alfonso Solidum presented a buy recommendation on Meralco and defended their recommendation before an international panel of judges.  Raymund Abara, CFA, of Vicsal Investment Inc. served as mentor, while Professor Daniel Vincent Borja served as faculty advisor.

“We are very honored to share this achievement with the Philippine finance community. Our rigorous preparation every step of the way has helped us learn what it takes to excel in the finance profession. Financial skills are important, but so too is adherence to the highest ethical standards,” says Professor Daniel Vincent Borja.

The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual educational initiative that promotes best practices in equity research through hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company analysis and presentation skills. Throughout the course of the competition, which requires hundreds of hours of preparation, participants receive mentoring from an industry professional as they analyze a publicly traded company, write a professional research report, and present their research results and recommendations to a high-profile panel of experts. Ethics and professional standards are at the core of the process and all participants are held to the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct. Points are awarded to teams on the basis of their investment case, poise, and ability to answer the judges’ questions.

The winning team is awarded a USD$10,000 grant for the university, and each team member receives a scholarship for the CFA Program.
