PLDT Home donates Home Wifi Prepaid units to DepEd

PLDT Home, through the PLDT Smart Foundation (PSF), recently turned over to the Department of Education (DepEd) one thousand units of Home WiFi Prepaid to enable public school teachers to experience a faster and more reliable internet connection as they conduct online classes, part of the DepEd’s blended learning strategy in these pandemic times.

“We are happy to assist the DepEd and its teachers in conducting online classes and facilitating learning among students amid the restrictions brought about by the current pandemic. Our support to the country’s dedicated and hardworking teachers has always been profound. Our gratitude to them, immeasurable. The PLDT Home WiFi Prepaid will definitely help them manage digital education and reliably connect with their students,” said PSF President Ma. Esther O. Santos.

DepEd Undersecretary Tonisito Umali said,

“We really appreciate these donations from PLDT. Thank you! The Home WiFi Prepaid will be a great help to teachers in their online classes. These units will be distributed to them as soon as possible and we will immediately send to PLDT the list of schools actually receiving the units.”

The Home WiFi Prepaid units form part of the proceeds from the PLDT Home-sponsored virtual concert, At Home with PLDT: No Learner Left Behind, held in July last year. PLDT Home supports the No Learner Left Behind movement which aims to maintain quality education of students and youths affected by the pandemic with projects and partnerships positioned to deliver the needed tools and proper learning environments.

Featuring famous singers and musical artists, the livestreamed concert was conducted for the benefit of students, educators, and schools nationwide so that No Learner is Left Behind. Donations during the virtual event were coursed through the PSF’s Paymaya and bank accounts.

Earlier, PLDT Home and PSF turned over five sets of School-in-a-Bag to the DepEd and distributed Home WiFi Prepaid units and load cards, also part of the virtual concert’s proceeds, to deserving scholars of AHA Learning Center and Kris for Peace Organization, among others. More load cards and WiFi units will likewise be donated to other public schools in the coming months.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno supports the nationwide #VaccineAlamin campaign

The COVID-19 vaccine is gradually becoming available around the world, and in the Philippines, preparations are underway for a vaccination program roll-out in the coming months. Vaccination plays a key role in ending the COVID-19 pandemic by preparing a person's immune system to fight the virus, should you be exposed. This potentially helps to reduce its spread within entire communities.

At present, majority of Filipinos are still unwilling to receive the vaccine due to concerns over its safety, according to the latest Pulse Asia survey. This poses a challenge to the implementation plans of both local and national government units. To address this, the City Government of Manila has partnered with TikTok for #VaccineAlamin, a COVID-19 vaccine education campaign. #VaccineAlamin aims to boost awareness on the health benefits of immunization, and spread accurate information about the COVID-19 vaccine to the public.

The #VaccineAlamin Campaign was launched via TikTok Live last February 22. During the event, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno provided an overview of what local government units are doing to support the nationwide vaccination program. According to him, their goal is not to force people to get vaccinated, but instead encourage and help educate them, to enable more Filipinos to make informed decisions once the vaccination program is underway.

Mayor Isko identified fear and misinformation as two of the biggest barriers that need to be broken down. He said, "Kaya nagkaroon ng doubt ang ating mga kababayan, dahil dun sa nangyaring isang bakuna na medyo nagkaroon ng masamang impresyon ang mga mamamayan. Pangalawa, 'yung mga misinformation about existing vaccines all over the world."

The mayor also stressed the importance of communication, adding that the most effective strategy is to engage people, and make sure that they have access to factual information. He said, "I think it's more on talking to the people, kaya kami nagpapasalamat sa TikTok, because this is a set of audience, because of its demographics, if we can use this type of outlet, malaking bagay kasi 'yung tao directly makatatanong samin." He adds, "Having TikTok nowadays, helps

us. People are into it, so why not use it as a form of communication. Sa dami nang binabasa ng mga tao ngayon, sa dami ng pumapasok na impormasyon sa tao ngayon, kailangan maging catchy."

Manila City Health Officer, Dr. Arnold Pangan, also spoke at the launch event. He explained some important things that people need to know about the vaccine. Dr. Pangan clarified that, while the vaccine protects you from suffering from a serious form of COVID-19, it is still possible to get the disease after being vaccinated against it. This is why it is important to still take precautions such as physical distancing and mask-wearing.

According to Dr. Pangan, "You may still be infected with the COVID-19 virus, tuloy-tuloy pa rin dapat ang ating pag-iingat kahit social distancing, kahit wearing of mask, kasi it's not a guarantee. Pag nabakunahan ka na, ang maganda doon, you will be protected from having a severe form of COVID-19 infection."

Members of the TikTok community can show their support for the #VaccineAlamin Campaign by using the hashtag, and sharing creative content filled with factual information about the virus and the vaccine to boost awareness. Whether it is a skit, a song, or a dance video, as long as it helps spread #VaccineAlamin's message, it is sure to make a difference. Mayor Isko himself issued a challenge to TikTok creators to join the hashtag challenge in order to amplify the campaign. He said, "Create a video that will help inform others about #VaccineAlamin Campaign, i will copy it and tag you!"

TikTok values the safety of the entire community, and the #VaccineAlamin campaign is a great example for how the platform can be used to do good. Through its dynamic features like TikTok Live and hashtags, information dissemination becomes easy, enjoyable, and relatable, while still being meaningful and impactful. As CNN Philippines News Anchor, James Deakin, who hosted the launch event, said, "It's such a pleasure to use this platform in a way that I never foresaw, but it is very effective. We just want to be able to reach out to as many people as possible. We'd like to thank TikTok for making this possible, for inviting us over here to share this information. As we keep saying, I hope it doesnt sound cliché, we're all in this together."

Learn more about #VaccineAlamin on TikTok, and help spread the word about the importance of getting vaccinated against COVID-19. Download the app on your iOS and Android devices today to get started.

At "Connected for Shared Prosperity" forum, government representatives discuss solutions for better sustainable development

A day before the much anticipated MWC Shanghai 2021, government representatives gathered at the Jumeirah Himalayas Hotel in Shanghai for the “Connected for Shared Prosperity Forum”

The forum was hosted Huawei, GSMA, the Center for Environmental Economic Studies at Fudan University, and The Paper and supported by UNESCO. The forum brings the public and private sector together to tackle climate change and advance sustainable development  and discuss solutions for better sustainable development.

Among the distinguished panel of speakers were María Reyes Maroto Spanish Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism; Pedro Nuno Santos, Portuguese Minister of Infrastructure and Housing; László Palkovics, Hungarian Minister of Innovation and Technology; Dato' Saifuddin bin Abdullah of Malaysian Minister of Communications and Multimedia, and Vunnaporn Devahastin from the Thai Secretary-General of the National Digital Economy and Society Commission.

All speakers agreed that the global economic recovery is increasing instep with greater enforcement of pandemic control measures. They also agreed that reductions in emissions, more jobs, and more initiatives in facilitating prosperity are needed to attain the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030 and the Paris Agreement's long-term goals. Multiple speakers identified digital technologies and global collaboration as essential in this process.

More than 1,000 guests from over 50 countries attended the forum either online or onsite, and discussions were live broadcast in eight languages. Attendees agreed that digital technologies have become the foundation of sustainable development and will benefit more people in multiple aspects.

Huawei Senior Vice President and Director of the Board Catherine Chen also delivered a keynote speech at the forum stating Huawei's belief that the ultimate goal of technology is to benefit all humans, and that digital technologies can facilitate the UN SDGs. She then called on enterprises to take firm action to use technology to create more value for the world as a whole.

Huawei has long been an advocate for supporting technological advancement. In 2020, Huawei recycled over 4,500 tons of electronic waste Through multiple initiatives including a reduction of plastics in their phone packaging (1.8 million shopping bags of plastic saved per 10 million phones) and a reduction of 148 million tons of CO2 emissions through the deployment of their FusionSolar solution in more than 60 countries and regions (equivalent to planting more than 200 million trees). Huawei also helped build the world's largest agricultural PV power plant and fishery PV power plant in Ningxia and Shandong, respectively, both of which have contributed significantly to local environmental protection efforts.

"Ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all" has also been set as one of the UN SDGs.

As of the end of 2020, Huawei's TECH4ALL Connecting Schools and DigiTruck programs have been brought to more than 200 schools, benefiting over 60,000 teachers and students. In a related program, Huawei is also collaborating with UNESCO on a three-year Open Schools program in Egypt, Ethiopia, and Ghana that will help schools improve digital skills and support online education.

The Director General of the GSMA Mats Granryd said, "In 2016, the mobile industry was the first to fully commit to the 17 SDGs. And we have been at work ever since, contributing to every one of the 17 goals, including climate action, digital inclusion, and sustainability."

Stefania Giannini, USESCO's Assistant Director-General for Education, stated that information and communications technologies (ICT) play a crucial role in ensuring educational continuity, making education more inclusive, and providing lifelong learning solutions through interactive websites, online libraries, and video courses.

European Parliament Member Frances Fitzgerald also noted that, with the roll out of 5G wireless networks, the world is on the threshold of the next revolution. 5G has the potential to impact positively on people's lives and well-being in areas such as health, education, and food production, and digital technologies will facilitate sustainable development goals.

Zhang Wenhong, Director of the Fudan University Huashan Hospital Infectious Disease Department, also spoke out about the need to continue supporting unhindered development, citing how both social unity and advances in science and technology are critical in combating epidemics. He went on to say that the current pandemic has only emphasized how urgently we need to address developmental issues that result in environmental destruction.

The Director of Fudan University's Center for Environmental Economic Studies Li Zhiqing closed out the event saying, "China is pushing for comprehensive green transformation of social and economic development, and peaking carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality are the top priority in the transformation. We should encourage innovation in disciplines like economics, finance, and ecological environment which span liberal arts and engineering, so as to fill the gap in talent needed for sustainable development in the future."

MWC Shanghai 2021 runs from February 23 to February 25 in Shanghai, China. Huawei showcases its products and solutions at booth E10, E50, and E90 in Hall N1 in the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC). For more information, please visit https://carrier.huawei.com/en/events/mwcs2021

Believe in the power of technology for the benefit of the society, says Huawei's Catherine Chen

“Looking back over history, we've seen how large social changes happen in lockstep with breakthroughs in science and technology. But today, technological advancements are hyped and politicized, sometimes demonized.”

This was one of the observations made by Catherine Chen, Huawei Senior Vice President and Board Member as she addressed the Connected for Shared Prosperity Forum at the ongoing MWC Shanghai 2021.

“We've all had mixed feelings about 2020. The pandemic has changed our lives. Many things we took for granted no longer exist and our values have changed. My biggest takeaway from the past year has been just how hard it is for society to reach a consensus. There seems to be constant conflict and disagreement, from deciding if it's necessary to impose lockdowns to debating if it's worth it to wear a mask.”

Chen, however, still asserts that technology can be used as an engine for human progress and crucial to advancing the goals of the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

In her keynote speech titled "Believe in the Power of Technology" called on individuals and businesses to think big and act small as she reiterated her support of the UN's sustainable development goals and building a green, innovative and inclusive world.

“Today, we've come together to discuss the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals. I, personally, believe that technology is crucial to advancing these goals, and together, we must do two things to fully unleash the power of technology and drive sustainable development.

Our first challenge will be to reach an honest consensus on whether technology is an engine of human progress.

The first challenge she said will be to reach an honest consensus on whether technology is an engine of human progress as many have stopped believing in the power of technology because of fear and distrust. Some are going to great lengths to hinder the development of technology.

“I recently read a report, which said that any important digital platform that is dominated by China will be highly dangerous to the US if not effectively contained and that 5G was one such platform.”

5G is a standardized technology defined by its high bandwidth, low latency, and broad connectivity. It helps traditional industries transform and can benefit all. Wide-scale 5G deployment can already be seen in multiple industries around the world. Every-day consumers are benefiting from 5G experiences, while industrial use in seaports, mines, and the transportation sector is increasing operational efficiency.

“If we claim that technology is critically important but its development is ideologically wrong, this will only result in division, confusion, and regression. We must reach a global consensus on this issue and believe in the power of technology to leverage it for the benefit of the society.”

Chen said there is always the danger that someone will abuse a new technology, but notes that this is not a new concern. “Since the industrial revolution, we have seen how establishing rules to manage technological risks can safeguard us. Through rules, technological developments can transcend national boundaries and improve the livelihoods of all without incurring undue risk. We are entering a digital era, and many are hard at work creating the governance rules for cyber security, privacy protection, and trusted AI that will keep us safe. For the rest of us, it’s time to be confident and open to technological development.”

The second challenge will be taking resolute action to make technology truly effective/ and create value for all.

“It may be hard to reach a consensus, but it is easy to shut down technology. For enterprises, believing in tech can start from something small. For example, let's look at the minimum viable product concept. Typically, MVP refers to the product development stage where what you've made just meets the most critical of user requirements while using the smallest amount of resources. That MVP can then be constantly iterated and refined after its launch.

Building broad consensus is difficult, so we can draw on this MVP concept to help technological advancement continue. By focusing on the limited common understanding we have right now and by keeping in mind what resources are actually available, we can drive progress step by step. Iteration means perfect. Fostering conflict will mean stagnation.”

The Connected for Shared Prosperity Forum was held at Jumeirah Himalayas Hotel in Shanghai by Huawei, Global Mobile Association (GSMA), Center of Environmental Economics of Fudan University, and The Paper. Participants joined both online and in person to discuss the value of digital technologies in sustainable development for a better, connected world, representing organizations from around the world, including international industry regulators and think tanks from China, Malaysia, Spain, Thailand, Hungary and Portugal. More than 1000 guests from over 50 countries attended the conference online.

Huawei has always supported technological advancement. We believe, ultimately, tech benefits humanity. We also believe digital tech will help the UN achieve its SDGs. Already, Huawei has explored many applications of digital tech guided by the SDGs.

Huawei's Smart PV solution is being widely used in more than 60 countries to reduce carbon emissions by 148 million tons. This is the equivalent of planting more than 200 million trees. In Ethiopia alone, we have helped our customers deploy over 400 solar power stations, reducing carbon emissions by 2,850 tons. In China, we have also helped build the world's largest solar stations dedicated to agriculture and fishing in Ningxia and Shandong provinces.

What’s more, Huawei and UNESCO launched the Open Schools program over the course of a three-year partnership, to help schools in Egypt, Ethiopia, and Ghana improve their digital skills with online education.

Every one of these examples, every single connection, every gram of emissions reduced, every watt of electricity saved, every small improvement we've made, couldn't have been achieved without small advances in tech. This is the value tech brings to the world.

While the pandemic closed many doors, innovation has opened new windows of hope says Huawei Chairman

Industries need to go digital and to life better, businesses smarter, and the world more inclusive

The COVID-19 pandemic almost brought the entire world to a standstill, as governments imposed extended lockdowns leading to business closures, job layoffs and an economic recession.

But the pandemic also accelerated the adaption of technology creating many new requirements for digital infrastructure.

Over the past year, Huawei has worked closely with carriers to ensure the stable operations of more than 300 networks across 170 countries. In Indonesia, Huawei employed a new digital delivery technology to rapidly deploy over 50,000 base stations. In Ningxia, China, Huawei's integrated routers enable multi-cloud access for enterprise users, helping them move to cloud more rapidly – and at lower cost. "As we look towards recovery, we need to ensure that innovation isn't just about today. It's about lighting up tomorrow and creating greater social value," said Huawei's Deputy Chairman Ken Hu

Huawei's Deputy Chairman made the statement at the opening ceremony of Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2021 as he discussing the huge impact of COVID-19 on governments, enterprises, and people around the world, as well as the role technology plays in combatting the pandemic.

"Innovation isn't just about solving the challenges we face today," said Hu. "It's about lighting up tomorrow. Once we get the pandemic under control, we need to think hard about how we can innovate to improve quality of life, make businesses smarter, and create a more inclusive world." He explained that, while unequal access to digital technology and digital skills has widened the digital divide, the pandemic has made the situation significantly worse. "We have to focus innovation on bridging the gap between the haves and have-nots, and on driving digital inclusion".

During his keynote speech, Hu also showcased Huawei's Cyberverse app, an advanced AR application that demonstrates how 5G networks, 5G devices, and AR technology can converge to create a more immersive virtual experience, whether it be a lifelike forest or a simulation in outer space.

The new app makes it possible to seamlessly integrate virtual and physical realities with high-precision, centimeter-level positioning capabilities, massive computing power, and high-bandwidth transmission through 5G. Huawei expects Cyberverse to create many new growth opportunities in multiple sectors, including education, entertainment, tourism, transportation, and navigation.

Innovating for smarter business

In recent years, technologies like 5G, cloud, and AI have begun playing an important role in manufacturing, accelerating the transition to more intelligent and flexible operations. Hu explained how Huawei's own Dongguan South Factory is currently using 5G networks with cloud-based AI applications in its 5G smartphone production lines to drive huge productivity gains.

Opportunities abound in the digital transformation space. Huawei predicts that, by 2025, 97% of all large companies will use AI. Other estimates for 2025 include that 55% of China's entire GDP will be driven by the digital economy, and 60% of global carrier revenue will be derived from industry customers.  Hu noted that, to achieve these projections, "all industries should focus on improving their capabilities, building out the ecosystem, and creating value with digital technology."

As an ICT infrastructure provider, Huawei has been focusing heavily on 5G innovation to help drive the digital transformation of all industries. Hu noted that Huawei's innovation is focused on three areas: technology, products, and applications.

•          Technology: Huawei's new 5G Super Uplink solution delivers unmatched uplink speeds, helping companies break through a major bottleneck in industrial Internet.

•          Products: Huawei's fully converged 5G edge computing products have sped up deployment of edge computing sites by a factor of 10.

•          Applications: Huawei's Wireless X Labs incubates 5G applications with partners across a wide range of domains like manufacturing, healthcare, finance, and transportation. With these partners, Huawei is exploring how 5G can help different industries go digital more effectively.

Huawei is also working closely with customers and partners to drive innovation in 5G. The company is currently working with ecosystem partners to develop devices targeted at meeting specific industry needs. Through joint innovation and strategic partnerships with its customers, Huawei aims to drive 1 to N expansion of 5G applications for business. The company is also working to coordinate 5G communication and industry standards to more rapidly scale up 5GtoB applications.

Hu reported that, in collaboration with its partners and regional carriers, Huawei has signed more than 1,000 contracts for industrial 5G applications in more than 20 industries.

Innovating for a more inclusive world

While pivoting to address the pandemic, Hu warned that the world faces a real risk of K-shaped economic recovery once COVID-19 is brought under control. He predicts an increasingly wide divide between organizations and people who actively benefit from digital technology and those who do not. In order to avoid unbalanced development, bridge the digital divide, and promote inclusive growth, Hu emphasized that the focus of innovation needs to shift to producing greater social value.

The company has put its money where its mouth is. Through a partnership with Ghanaian operators on a rural network infrastructure project, Huawei currently plans to deploy more than 2,000 RuralStar base stations in remote regions around the country. This will help increase mobile coverage in Ghana from 83% to 95% and bring previously unconnected communities online for the first time.

Similarly, new AI services deployed on HUAWEI CLOUD are being used to help a small company in Malaysia double its production capacity without increasing headcount during the pandemic.

Hu also shared how 5G networks have been used to enable remote ultrasounds and CT scans that help address imbalanced distribution and shortages of medical resources.

Closing out his speech, Hu stressed that, while the pandemic closed many doors, innovation has opened new windows of hope. He concluded that, through ongoing innovation, Huawei will continue to pursue open partnerships with its customers and partners to help industries go digital and make life better, businesses smarter, and the world more inclusive.

At this year's MWC Shanghai, Huawei is showcasing in Hall N1 seven new ICT network concepts, including Wireless 1+N, Home+, All-optical Bases, and Cloud-network Smart Connections, as well as nine new products and solutions, including ultra-simplified sites, gigabit home broadband, premium private lines, and intelligent cloud networks.

MWC Shanghai 2021 runs from February 23 to February 25 in Shanghai, China. Huawei's products and solutions can be found at booth E10, E50, and E90 in Hall N1 in the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC). For more information, please visit https://carrier.huawei.com/en/events/mwcs2021.

Despite comments from other users telling her to pick boxes labeled with other letters, Jovie chose S, believing it to be a lucky letter since her daughter’s name starts with it.  “Feeling po namin and’un talaga yung isang milyon,” she said.

Sure enough, the box was opened to reveal the 1M jackpot prize. Jovie, who was overwhelmed to the point of tears upon winning, was only able to announce the big news to her family over the phone as she was on 24-hour duty. She looks forward to sharing the joy and excitement with her loved ones in person.

She also plans to use the prize money to buy medicines for her mother-in-law and fund a small business. “Hindi po talaga ako makapaniwalaSalamat po sa Panginoon. Maraming maraming salamat po sa Shopee family sa napalanunan kong 1M.”

Through Sony’s unique spatial sound technologies, the RA3000 recreates the ambient room-filling sound experience like a well-designed café in your home. Unlike most speakers that spread sound horizontally, this speaker spread background music both horizontally (wall-to-wall) and vertically (floor-to-ceiling) with Immersive Audio Enhancement and Sony’s 360 Reality Audio content playback. The ambient room-filling sound creates a calm, relaxing atmosphere, helping to create the right ambience for chatting with family and friends.

Immersive Audio Enhancement

The RA3000 provides Immersive Audio Enhancement (IAE) based on Sony’s unique algorithm, transforming 2-channel stereo tracks into ambient room-filling sound. Whether you’re cooking, cleaning, working or catching up with friends, the speaker diffuses sound both horizontally and vertically to envelop you in all directions, while recreating a soothing atmosphere.

360 Reality Audio

360 Reality Audio tracks provide the best ambient room-filling experience as they incorporate three-dimensional sound location data, allowing the RA3000 to analyze the location data within and optimally allocate the sound to the speaker’s structure effectively, thus delivering true ambient room-filling sound. 360 Reality Audio can be enjoyed through compatible music streaming services. Listeners can currently access approximately 4,000 songs in 360 Reality Audio[i] from artists like Alicia Keys, Lil Nas X, Megan Thee Stallion, Noah Cyrus, Zara Larsson and more. Sound calibration

Every room has a different acoustic condition and the sound characteristics can be affected by various aspects of the room. Through sound calibration, the RA3000 considers the acoustic conditions of the room and optimizes its output to create ambient room-filling sound. The RA3000 provides effortless auto adjustment, which takes place in the background while you are enjoying your favorite tracks. Every time you restart the RA3000 after moving it to a new location in the house, automatic recalibration is activated for optimum audio performance.

Premium Wireless Speaker For a New Listening Experience

The RA3000 offers the beauty of Sony’s unique spatial sound technologies anywhere at home. The RA3000achieves omnidirectional sound with deep bass by using a full range speaker, an omni-diffuser that spreads sound throughout the room in every direction and a dual passive radiator to produce deep bass. The speaker’s overlapping beam tweeters form a wave front that goes upward, which delivers sound vertically. This helps fill the space with ambient room-filling sound, making sure that the RA3000 hits the sweet spot, wherever you are in the room. With its smaller body and humidity resistance[ii], it is the perfect companion that enables you to bring your music with you anywhere in your home – even while listening to calming music when taking a relaxing bath or belting out your favorite songs while cooking in the kitchen[iii].

Seamless Listening Experience with Auto Volume

This will be a thing of the past as the RA3000 will analyze each track and automatically play them at a consistent volume so you can say goodbye to the inconvenience of constantly picking up your smartphone or remote to adjust the volume after every few tracks.
