UnionBank, CANVAS.PH team up to help artists and collectors

Union Bank of the Philippines (UnionBank) is leveraging its expertise in blockchain technology in a partnership with the non-profit organization Center for Art, New Ventures and Sustainable Development (CANVAS.PH) to help artists and collectors navigate the emerging non-fungible token (NFT) art space.

The partnership was made official through a virtual signing event last February 17 between Cathy Casas, UnionBank's Head of Blockchain Center of Excellence (BCOE), Digital Assets Markets Unit and API Marketplace; and Gigo Alampay, Executive Director, CANVAS.PH. They were joined by former Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Popo Lotilla, who introduced CANVAS.PH to UnionBank, and who has set his eyes recently on the transformative potential of blockchain technology especially here in the Philippines.

“Art has always been a powerful tool in creating positive change, and the advent of NFT technology potentially opens up more opportunities for artists to positively impact society through their work,” said Lotilla. “Together with the leading expertise of UnionBank in blockchain, we believe that this partnership will help CANVAS.PH uplift more lives through its advocacy.”

"Through this partnership, we want the public to know that UnionBank supports NFT art and intends to be involved in this emerging space. Primarily, the goal is to empower and educate artists and collectors to mint their own NFT. We also aim to draw attention to CANVAS.PH's advocacy and artworks so that they may also attract interested buyers and supporters. We are proud of our Filipino artists. Their pursuit of NFT as a new medium is a true example of innovation in action," said Henry Aguda, Senior Executive Vice President, Chief Technology and Operations Officer and Chief Transformation Officer, UnionBank.

"These are all part of the Bank's initiative towards exploring new use cases for blockchain technology, and is in line with our 'Tech-Up Pilipinas' advocacy and our mission to continuously enhance the Bank’s capabilities and equip our workforce to continuously serve the customers of today and of the future," Cathy Casas added. "We hope this event signifies one of many partnerships and ventures that the Bank will have in exploring NFT technology and the evolving metaverse economy."

Under the partnership, UnionBank, through its BCOE, and CANVAS.PH will jointly facilitate an educational program focused on NFTs for artists and collections. This program consists of a series of webinars and a sale and auction of Filipino NFT artworks curated by CANVAS.PH, the proceeds of which will be for the benefit of the latter’s mission to work "with the creative community to promote children's literacy, explore national identity, and deepen public appreciation for Philippine art, culture, and the environment.”

Founded in 2005, CANVAS collaborates with some of the country’s best artists and writers to publish and give away pictures and activity books for children. To date, the organization has provided more than 400,000 books to poor and disadvantaged communities and public schools all over the Philippines. Each year, it also mounts art exhibitions and public art events to encourage debate and discussion on socially relevant themes such as human rights, climate change, and internet safety for children.

To help minimize the environmental impact that will result from these efforts, specifically the use of the blockchain network Ethereum, UnionBank will augment its already existing tree-planting activities, including in Ibaan, Batangas at the site of CANVAS’ planned children’s museum of Philippine art, pledging to plant even more trees to offset the potential carbon footprint.

The Bank hopes that all of the efforts under the partnership will empower stakeholders in the Philippine art space, enabling them to eventually navigate the NFT space on their own, while helping remove the stigma surrounding NFTs, cryptocurrencies, and other blockchain-based technologies.

Legarda: Innovation is key to inclusive growth and development

Almost three years after the enactment of the Philippine Innovation Act, its principal author, three-term Senator Loren Legarda maintained that innovation and competitiveness are vital strategies towards pursuing sustainable economic growth.

Now a Senatorial aspirant, Legarda stated that when implemented properly, the principles embodied in Republic Act No. 11293 will not only help the country produce highly skilled members of our workforce, but also help further enhance the capacities of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and allied sectors.

Legarda likewise stressed that the national government may utilize science, innovation, and technology in transforming the Philippines into a competitive nation saying that, “we must adopt a broader view in developing its goals and strategies covering all potential types and sources of innovation.”

In view of this, Legarda urged the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), the Department of Trade Industry (DTI), and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to ensure that the law is adequately funded and that the pressing needs of the various sectors, particularly the MSMEs, are properly addressed. These include access to finance, coaching, and mentoring in the areas of design, technology extension services, quality control, marketing and promotion, patents and other forms of intellectual property rights, among others.

Legarda also pointed out that by putting a premium on innovation, government agencies can pursue convergence with other institutions in order to add greater value to already existing programs, citing the convergence between the DOST and the University of Antique (UA) as an example.

The DOST’s Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST), which Legarda funded under the 2019 national budget, established livelihood support hubs in UA campuses and technology-based barangay economic enterprises (TechnoBEEs) in select municipalities in her home province. These granted assistance and support to MSMEs, taking into consideration the available agricultural produce and resources in the municipality.

This project provided Antiqueños not only with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and expertise.  More importantly, it also generated employment and entrepreneurial opportunities, increased the productivity level of the municipalities, and even curbed the problem of malnutrition through the production of DOST-FNRI complementary food.

Legarda also recalled the convergence project between the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), under its Shared Service Facilities (SSF) program and the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) in Bacnotan, La Union which she funded under the 2018 national budget.  This project, which involved silk processing and weaving, introduced sericulture to the residents and gave them gainful employment, while promoting the silk industry in the province.

The other SSF projects which Legarda supported in recent year included, among others, fish processing which provides additional income for coastal communities, fisherfolk and their families; homemade ice cream production, which utilizes the community’s dairy produce; and the craft of weaving, which supports traditional weavers and boosts the income of farmers who plant the pineapple, abaca, and banana from which the fibers used in weaving are derived.

During Legarda’s stint as Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Finance in 2018, the budget allocation of SSF increased from 50 million to 1 billion, thus allowing more MSMEs all over the country to access capital, skills building and technical assistance.

“MSMEs constitute 99.5% of our local economy.  Training, research and development efforts are needed for the MSMEs to come up with innovative and useful products that can be sold in the market and benefit the consumers,” she added.

“We have to ensure the effective implementation of and adequate funding for the enabling programs under the Philippine Innovation Act to help MSMEs sustain and promote their businesses, not just in the domestic market, but also in the global arena,” Legarda concluded.

Cebu Pacific Takes Active Role in Odette Disaster Relief

In the wake of the destruction brought by Typhoon Odette in Visayas and Mindanao just one week before Christmas 2021, Filipinos gathered in the name of bayanihan to help the affected families and communities rise and rebuild.

Cebu Pacific (CEB), the Philippines’ leading airline, worked hand-in-hand with government agencies, non-profit organizations, and regular citizens in extending help and uplifting lives. With its large, nationwide coverage of flights and personnel who are rooted in the company value of service excellence, CEB was able to quickly mobilize relief to affected areas.

From the air to on-the-ground

The country’s preferred cargo carrier with the widest domestic network partnered with the Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation (PDRF) and the Office of Civil Defense to provide special humanitarian flights for 32 medical personnel from Jose B. Lingad Memorial General Hospital and Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital and Sanitarium, along with a cargo of assorted medicines and medical equipment from the Department of Health (DOH) to the CARAGA Region via Siargao. This was part of an urgent medical mission to Odette-impacted communities who were suffering from a stomach flu outbreak due to the lack of potable water in these areas.

PDRF President Butch Meily was thankful for the airline’s help in bringing medical aid to those communities. “Cebu Pacific’s assistance has been crucial in getting the PDRF team, healthcare professionals, medicine, and relief goods to areas where they were desperately needed. We are grateful to the men and women of the airline for their support,” he said.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) likewise tapped the logistical support of Cebu Pacific to expedite the delivery of relief items to areas affected by Typhoon Odette. Around 1,340 family food packs were transported by the airline to Caticlan, Cebu, and Palawan from December 22 to 30, 2021. The cargo also included 30,000 pieces of Disaster Assistance Family Access Card (DAFAC) forms which helped the DSWD ensure that all families hit by Typhoon Odette are given appropriate assistance through a monitoring system.

“With the extent of damage caused by Typhoon Odette in transportation, electricity and communication lines, the generosity and support of Cebu Pacific to the DSWD’s relief operations greatly helped in the expeditious delivery of the much-needed assistance to our affected kababayans,” DSWD Secretary Rolando Joselito Bautista said.

One of the challenges in the disaster-stricken areas was to prevent a surge of COVID-19 in their evacuation centers. To help monitor the number of COVID cases in Eastern Visayas, the World Health Organization (WHO) Philippines dispatched 2,000 rapid antigen test kits to the region, tapping Cebu Pacific as its logistics partner to transport the test kits to Tacloban City last January 7. Cebu Pacific airlifted additional antigen kits for WHO Philippines on the week of February 7     .

Cebu Pacific was also supportive of private initiatives such as the distribution of Waves for Water filtration systems by travel vlogger Kyle Jennerman and Northern Mindanao Mountaineering Society to the coastal barangaysBayanihan and San Antonio in the Municipality of Libjo in Dinagat islands. The airline was able to fly out the filtration buckets from Manila to provide safe drinking water for the communities. "Without the help of Cebu Pacific, we wouldn't have been able to bring these donated water filters at a critical time when its most needed in the community. We are so thankful." according to volunteer organizer Sam Jennings.

Animal welfare was another major concern during the recent calamity, and Cebu Pacific helped PeTA Asia care for the affected people and pets by carrying three shipments of 350kgs of animal and human food including rice, canned goods, water filters, vet meds, solar panel, tarps, and drinking water for the Bohol Animal Rescue and Kindness (BARK) Center in Bohol and the Island Rescue Organization in Cebu.

Continuous commitment

Massive rebuilding efforts are still being conducted in many of the typhoon-affected areas. Damage to agriculture and infrastructure has been reported in several areas of Mimaropa, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, Soccsksargen, Caraga, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

With the renowned resilience of the Filipino, affected communities are rising up against the challenges, and Cebu Pacific Air is committed to continuing its support for these initiatives.

“Aside from offering safe and reliable travels to our different local and international destinations, we want to continue to make life better for veryjuan, and this includes being there for our kababayans most especially in their time of need,” says Michael Ivan Shau, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Cebu Pacific.

For those interested to partner with CEB, humanitarian requests may be sent to socialresponsibility@cebupacificair.com.

Simple ways to nurture your inner peace at home

In an increasingly fast-paced world, nurturing one’s inner peace has become an afterthought. Responsibilities and commitments pile up so quickly that taking care of the mind and the soul has become the least of priorities. However, losing oneself for the sake of hustle and grit is no way to live, especially if sometimes all it takes is a moment at home to reconnect and recharge.

“We, at RLC Residences, believe that inner peace should start at home. This is why we commit to developing residential spaces that foster recovery and relaxation,” said RLC Residences Marketing Head Karen Cesario. “A testament to that commitment is our nature-inspired development called Woodsville Crest.”

RLC Residences’ Woodsville Crest in Paranaque incorporates nature-inspired amenities, open spaces, and landscaped areas. It is perfect for individuals who want to start nurturing their inner peace with some simple reflecting activities.

1. Writing in a journal.

Journaling is like talking to a friend. It’s an outlet that allows people to write down their thoughts and feelings without the fear of any kind of judgment. It’s a way to unload any negative emotions, as well as share the most exciting things that may have happened during the day. It can be done practically anywhere, but best if it’s from a space of privacy like one’s bedroom, or from a space of relaxation like outdoors under the shade of a tree. If you’re a Woodsville Crest unit owner, you can conveniently do this at your work-from-home nook – a space perfect for every passion, including journal writing.

2. Meditate and reflect.

Much like journaling, meditation and reflection can give a sense of calm, peace, and balance that can benefit one’s well-being and health. It allows people to push out negative thoughts and focus only on the now. Trying some breathing exercises and even better, doing yoga can be refreshing for both the mind and body. You can do this also at the open areas at Woodsville Crest, such as the amenity deck that is surrounded by nature.

You can also do light runs to help clear your mind. At Woodsville Crest, this type of activity can be done with its jog trail surrounded by landscaped areas – perfect to energize your spirits so you can move forward and do things you need to accomplish.

3. Connect with nature.

Spending time in nature through a walk in a park or garden brings a host of benefits to physical and mental health, including reducing or eliminating anxiety and depression. Being mindful of one’s feelings allows for refocusing, recharging, and finding equilibrium in life.

These simple activities can allow one to take a step back, look within, and come back with a renewed spirit. Recognizing the importance of nurturing inner peace especially in the busy streets of urban areas, RLC Residences’ Woodsville Crest features amenities that are in harmony with nature. This includes the property’s jog trail, landscape areas, clubhouse lobby, and pool deck where residents can conveniently unwind.

“We at RLC Residences know the role that a peaceful environment plays in ensuring homeowners get the time to rest and recharge—essential elements in achieving their much deserved inner peace,” said  Cesario.

Here’s how you can “still” survive the pandemic

Masks on. Stay two meters apart. Wash your hands often. Even if we are already two years into a pandemic, we still cringe when we hear someone sneeze or cough in public, more so when it’s someone near us. We have never been this cautious about our health, or as interested in knowing the latest updates on cases and variants. We even know the ideal daily dosage of Vitamin C.

But before you stock up on those fruit juices, hear this out. In the season ender of SUPERHUMAN, host Wil Dasovich and his finale guest, Dr. Dex Macalintal, a registered nutritionist and lifestyle medicine physician, talk about the nuances of our immunity and how to best double down on our health. Here are the best takeaways from the episode, to help you stay in the best of health during the pandemic.

Nutrition is key.

The best time to address sickness is before you get sick. The risks related to the top noncommunicable diseases in the Philippines, such as coronary heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, can be greatly reduced by reducing salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats from our diets.

Keep it simple. Read the labels when choosing what food to buy for your weekly grocery run. The shorter the ingredient list, the better; if you can go for the non-processed food item, even better. If you are unsure about the ideal mix of food on your plate, you can ask your doctor or a nutritionist.

Just move.

Begin the day with exercise. Raising your heart rate releases endorphins. Moreover, it improves your metabolism, which allows your body to burn more calories in its resting state and process nutrients better.

If you cant get your sweat on earlier in the day, exercise at a time most sustainable for you. What matters is not the time of day, but the long-term viability of your lifestyle change.

Community helps you stay healthy.

The mental stress and anguish caused by long periods of isolation can impact your immunity. The pandemic limited many of our in-person interactions. However, physical distancing does not have to mean social distancing. Community and meaningful interactions with other people are crucial to our mental and physical health. Connect with your loved ones as much as you can (while still following minimum health safety protocols, of course).

A medical consult is just a button away.

Given the constraints of mobility and the recommendation to avoid risky areas, people have been visiting the doctors office online. Telemedicine and the applications that enable it are now available to many. With more healthcare professionals joining networks, the medical expert you need can easily be recommended by the one you initially consulted.

AIA Philippines, the countrys premier life insurance company, recently introduced Total Health Solution, an ecosystem accessible through a single touchpoint platform that can help you live better so you are able to maintain a healthy lifestyle, protect better so you have peace of mind that you are prepared for life’s uncertainties, and get better, giving you access to healthcare needs should you find yourself unwell.

With Total Health Solution, you have the support you need anytime, anywhere. Healthcare needs such as teleconsulting, medicine purchase via delivery, vaccine administration, and discounted laboratory procedures are easily accessible. Within the ecosystem, you can view your policies and make changes. You can also be reminded when premiums are due.

“Spot Lymphoma, Stop Lymphoma” aims to raise awareness about lymphoma and improve access to lymphoma treatments

Biopharmaceutical leader Takeda Healthcare Philippines Inc. (“Takeda Philippines”) has launched the “Spot Lymphoma, Stop Lymphoma” initiative to answer the call of the government’s National Integrated Cancer Control Act for medical stakeholders to come together and work towards a cancer-free Philippines.

The initiative is led by Takeda Philippines and is supported by various organizations including the Philippine Cancer Society, Health Futures Inc., Philippine College of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine, Philippine Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, Philippine Society of Medical Oncology, Philippine Society of Pathologists, Carewell Community Foundation and Lymphoma Philippines. “Spot Lymphoma, Stop Lymphoma” aims to raise awareness about lymphoma and improve access to lymphoma treatments in the Philippines by providing free testing to patients, partnering with relevant organizations and institutions, and sponsoring talks and seminars to educate the public about the disease.

What is lymphoma?

Lymphoma is the most common type of blood cancer in the world. According to a study by the Global Cancer Observatory (Globocan), over 600,000 new cases of lymphoma were detected worldwide in 2020, making it the 11th most common cancer in the world.[1] In the Philippines, there were over 4,000 new patients diagnosed with lymphoma, making it the among the 30 most common cancers in the country.[2] This might seem like a small fraction of the population, but if left untreated, lymphoma can be deadly for the people who suffer from it, with nearly 300,000 deaths resulting from the disease in 2020 alone,[3] 2,500 of which were recorded in the Philippines.[4]

The pandemic has also put those with lymphoma at risk, as patients with the disease were identified to be more susceptible to COVID-19 according to a study published in the World Journal of Virology.[5] And with the fear of being infected by COVID-19 still looming, it has been more difficult for people experiencing symptoms of the disease to go out and undergo testing for lymphoma.

Lymphoma begins when an infection-fighting white blood cell or lymphocyte mutates, divides and grows out of control, compromising the immune system and lodging itself onto lymph nodes or "kulani" and causing them to swell. Hodgkin lymphoma is a type of lymphoma that involves the presence of a specific type of lymphocyte, Reed-Sternberg cells. Hodgkin lymphoma cases comprise one-fifth of all lymphoma cases in the world, making it a rare cancer.

And like any other cancer, detecting the disease in its early stages is essential, as survival rates drop from 90% to 70% in patients with advanced stages of the disease. Even then, relapse is common in advanced stages of the disease, with one-quarter to one-third of patients not achieving long-term remission with standard frontline therapy. However, detecting it is not an easy feat.

Hodgkin lymphoma shares common symptoms with other diseases such as fever, chills, night sweats, unexplained weight loss and fatigue. This, coupled with the fact that it is a relatively rare disease, makes it difficult for people to identify it in its early stages. The most telling signs are painless lumps or swelling of lymph nodes or “kulani” in the neck, armpit or groin region, but even then, the only way to get properly diagnosed is through biopsy or CD30 testing, which is not accessible to everyone. It’s also due to its rarity that there is a lack of public awareness about Hodgkin lymphoma, with treatment options and relevant information not readily available to patients.

Spot Lymphoma, Stop Lymphoma

As part of this initiative, Takeda Philippines has ongoing partnerships with several organizations to improve access to testing and raise awareness about the disease. One of its recently concluded partnerships is with the Philippine Cancer Society, where Takeda Philippines provided support to patients through free CD30 testing to help detect Hodgkin lymphoma. To date, the partnership has provided free testing to over 60 patients all over the country.

Aside from making testing more accessible, Takeda has also partnered with the Philippine College of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine, Philippine Society of Pathology, Philippine Society of Medical Oncology, Philippine Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion and Health Futures, Inc. for various webinars and talks on Hodgkin lymphoma for medical professionals and patients alike.

“Rare cancers like lymphoma continue to be a problem due to lack of awareness and information available to the public, which is why patients continue to search for treatment options and support in managing their disease. With the ‘Spot Lymphoma, Stop Lymphoma’ initiative, we hope to reinforce our commitment in providing access to innovative medicines to lymphoma patients and to address gaps in the areas of screening, diagnosis, treatment and patient support,” said Loreann Villanueva, Country Manager of Takeda Philippines.

Lymphoma Philippines, one of the partner organizations of Takeda Philippines, shared their support for the newly-launched initiative. “We at Lymphoma Philippines try our best to help every patient that needs support in any way we can, whether by providing information, improving access to treatment or supporting patient advocacy. By joining the ‘Spot Lymphoma, Stop Lymphoma’ initiative, we hope to make the general public more aware about lymphoma, the issues that patients face and what they can do to help,” said Jheric Delos Angeles, co-founder of Lymphoma Philippines.

Given the rarity of their condition, Hodgkin lymphoma patients may feel isolated as they are less likely to meet other people with the same form of their disease. With the “Spot Lymphoma, Stop Lymphoma” campaign, Takeda and its partners hope to raise public awareness, inform the public about treatment options and make information about the disease more readily available.

If you or someone you know has been experiencing any symptoms associated with Hodgkin lymphoma, please consult with your local oncologist or hematologist.
