How to Stay Safe Online

The internet offers kids wonderful new ways to discover the world - a tool for learning, exploring, being creative, and connecting with the people who matter. However, with longer screen time, this has made them more vulnerable to risks such as inappropriate content, online bullying, and even exploitation.  

 

Parents play a big role in keeping their children safe online, and there are practical internet safety precautions that can protect children from potentially harmful or inappropriate content and activities.

Here are some ways to ensure fun and productive screen time for your kids.

 

●      Talk about safety. Engage them in a conversation about how to stay safe online. Discuss with them potential risks and the importance of placing boundaries and protecting their privacy. Teach them to say no to requests that make them feel uncomfortable and to inform you about strangers who are asking them for personal information. It is also important to let them be “share aware” and know that anything they post on the internet stays on the internet for others to see for a very long time. 

 

●      Make house rules. Try to set rules on gadget use, such as not allowing them to use their gadgets in their room and setting the amount of screen time they have in a day. Place larger gadgets such as laptops in common areas where they can be better supervised when they are online.  

 

●      Tap into their online presence. Drop in on their profiles and posts and look into their app downloads and browser history so you can check for red flags. Try to get to know their online friends and teach them to alert you for inappropriate messages or posts on their social media feed so you can navigate through the situation together. For their safety, it is better to limit their posts to “friends only” instead of public settings.  

 

●      Set parental controls. There are phone features that can set phone limitations and content controls. Parents can also manage the websites their kids can visit on Google Chrome and disable the “browse incognito” feature. You can also turn on the feature that blocks sexually explicit and violent sites through the search engine’s Family Link app. You can also set parental controls on streaming services to make sure that your child will only have access to age-appropriate content.  

 

●      Read reviews. Do some research on an app before downloading it for your child, and take the time to pre-screen games, movies, or a series by reading reviews before allowing your child to play or watch them on his gadget. Better yet, double the fun and play or watch it with him!  

 

●      Build strong connections. Make it a habit to spend quality time with them. This will establish trust and make it easier for them to open up to you about the things and situations that they encounter while scrolling. To set a more natural tone, you can also share interesting things you found online, such as funny videos, fascinating trivia, or current events while you are having dinner together.  This will help set the course for their own online behavior and help them to use the internet in a more positive way.

As kids become more digitally-savvy, it is important to guide them to be safe, confident explorers of the digital world. Home Credit Philippines partners with Overseas Workers Welfare Association (OWWA), to honor the heroes of the modern age

 

Home Credit Philippines, the country’s leading consumer finance company, in partnership with Overseas Workers Welfare Association (OWWA), honored the heroes of the modern age, the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), during the OFW Family Day Caravan in Western Visayas.

 

The two-week-long caravan was attended by over 2,000 OFWs and OFW associations combined from the provinces of Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental. The program aimed to create an avenue for the OFWs and their families to reconnect and spend quality time with their loved ones.

Aside from family bonding activities, the caravan also opened conversations on financial literacy and education, addressing the common problems of OFWs spending years working abroad only to come home with little to no savings.

 

“Our main goal for the caravan was to show appreciation for the Filipino migrant workers. We want to empower them to make informed decisions on how to spend and manage their hard-earned money from working overseas. We at OWWA Region 6 support our OFWs all the way, and we want them to succeed and secure a better life for themselves and their families,” said Rizza Joy Moldes, OWWA Region 6 OIC director.

Throughout the caravan, Home Credit led the discussions on the basics of budgeting and saving as part of its advocacy program to promote financial literacy across the country. Zuellig Pharma Philippines’ Market Managing Director Jannette Jakosalem was cited as a finalist in the recently concluded Italian Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines (ICCPI) Leadership Awards while ZP Therapeutics’ Regulatory Affairs Director Carem Arevalo received the Philippine Association of Pharmacists in the Pharmaceutical Industry (PAPPI)’s Exemplary Award and Fire Up Award.

Jakosalem was nominated under the “Women in Business of the Year” category in the recently concluded ICCPI Leadership Awards, which recognizes exceptional Filipino and Italian business leaders, entrepreneurs, and organizations who continued to promote outstanding practices and global excellence in their respective fields. With the theme “Inspiring and Empowering Others”, the ICCPI not only celebrates excellence but also encourages young and upcoming leaders and entrepreneurs.

 

Jakosalem’s recognition in the reputable awards program is an affirmation of her hard work and numerous contributions to the country’s healthcare arena. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she became a prominent leader who supported various public-private partnerships including the Project Kaagapay of Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation (PDRF) whose objective was to help address immediate needs for health frontliners during the crisis. She helped secure resources and gather PPEs (like surgical face masks, face shields, medical cover-alls, gowns, gloves and goggles) for doctors, nurses and healthcare workers nationwide. Under her leadership, the project was able to collect more than Php 100 million-worth of PPEs including procurement of life-saving ventilators for over 20 public hospitals.  With the support of the Zuellig Family Foundation, she mobilized funding to help build the Philippines General Hospital’s COVID-19 isolation ward. 

 

As a key private sector representative, Jakosalem was also a prime mover and member of Task Force T3 (for Test, Trace and Treat), convened by the Inter-Agency Task Force – National Task Force (IATF-NTF) and the Department of Health (DOH), with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). As Vice-Chairperson of the Pharmaceutical & Healthcare Association of the Philippines (PHAP), she likewise helped rally the industry in ensuring timely and robust production and delivery of much needed life-saving medicines and vaccines during the pandemic. And as such, PHAP and Zuellig Pharma became an active member of the Ingat Angat COVID 19 movement. 

 

Within Zuellig Pharma she continues to be a champion of the company’s various sustainability, diversity and inclusion, and employee welfare initiatives. For example, for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace, she has taken on the leadership of the DEI pillar, which strongly espouses women empowerment in the organization. In sustainability, the Cebu-native aided in designing the first LEED-certified warehouse of the group in Sta. Rosa Laguna during her former stint as the CEO of Metro Drug Inc. (MDI).

 

“Being one of the finalists of the “Women in Business of the Year” at the ICCPI Awards 2022 is truly an honor. This recognition is a reminder, not only for me but for future leaders to always lead with integrity, respect, empathy, and gratitude towards your peers,” said Jakosalem.

Arevalo is currently one of the Board of Directors and the Committee on Scientific Meetings, Continuing Education and Training Chair.
