foodpanda’s partner riders are giving ‘delivery heroes’ a whole new meaning as they give back to communities

Food delivery riders were the unsung heroes of the pandemic. They may not wear capes but delivering food and essentials to our homes made them worthy to be called our modern-day road heroes.

For this year’s celebration of National Heroes Day, foodpanda’s partner riders are giving ‘delivery heroes’ a whole new meaning as they give back to communities in need.

The Ka-panda volunteers went around Metro Manila to visit several charity homes and distributed food, groceries, health & safety kits, and supplies to hundreds of beneficiaries. Aside from the distribution of goods, the visits also included a party-themed program and special presentation from the riders themselves.

The beneficiaries – who comprise of elderly people and young children from Associacion de Damas de Filipinas, Inc. and Concordia Children’s Services both in Manila, Good Samaritan Nursing home for the elderly in Marikina, and SOS Children’s Village in Muntinlupa – all enjoyed participating in the activities and receiving the donations.

Virgilio Requillas, Jr., one of the Ka-panda volunteers, was glad and excited about the news that they will have their own charity event at foodpanda. “Nung nalaman ko na may na-organize na outreach activity si foodpanda para sa mga riders, di na ko nag-atubili na mag-volunteer dahil di natin papalagpasin ang pagkakataon na makatulong sa kapwa.”

One of the foodpanda partner riders who also organized a charity project in their area with his fellow Ka-pandas a few months ago is John Rene Alcanzo. “Nung may nasunugan sa lugar namin, nag-ambagan kaming mga riders para makapagbahagi ng tulong,” he recalled. “Naging successful at madali naman po ang pag-aayos ng donation dahil bukod sa maganda ang samahan naming mga riders sa foodpanda, hawak naman namin ang schedule sa pag-byahe namin – may sapat na oras pa para tumulong sa mga nangangailangan.

The child care homes were grateful to both foodpanda and its partner riders for choosing them to be their beneficiaries.``Instead of us celebrating them as heroes this National Heroes’ Day, they are the ones doing the deed for us. We are truly thankful to them for putting a smile on the faces of the children/lolos and lolas here,” Jenicka Tan, Development Program Supervisor from Concordia Children's Services, Inc.

“Time and time again, our partner riders proved to be helping hand by delivering our food and essentials. Even if they’re already busy doing their jobs, they still find time to give back to our community,” said Patricia Jacinto, foodpanda Philippines Operations Director. “They are not just our delivery heroes, they are heroes of the community.”

This is just the first of the many upcoming charity events that the online quick platform is organizing with its partner riders as volunteers. “It’s not a one-time thing. We plan to also do charities in other areas, particularly in VisMin. Our goal is to do it nationwide and have our partner riders in the provinces also participate,” Jacinto added.

Generations of superheroes have come and gone in the history of Philippine shows, each leaving a distinct impact and legacy among viewers.

This year, ANIMA, one of the creative business units of tradigital entertainment company KROMA Entertainment, adds a fresh batch to this super roster as it gears up for the launch of a new superhero-themed series.

As the go-to resource for daring and creator-focused content, ANIMA unveils five new superheroes who will alter the course of mankind in the show ERO, which will kick off via ANIMA’s official Youtube channel this month. Its first three episodes will drop, fittingly, on August 29, National Heroes Day. Succeeding episodes will air every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

In the 10-episode series directed by Joel Ferrer and Miko Livelo, five random misfits from a superhero academy become unlikely superheroes as they discover their “useless” powers. Bannered by Gabbi Garcia as Malaya, Markus Paterson as Titan, Alex Diaz as Asher, Anikka Camaya as Hazel, and Dylan Ray Talon as Biboy, they will personify the powers of contact destruction, immortality, time travel, super richness, and illusionism.

As seen in its riveting trailer, the ERO crew will train on harnessing their abilities for the greater good while also learning the fundamentals of controlling them. In their quest to conquer villains and confront challenges, they will strive to surpass the greats that have come before them, and seek their place in greater heights.

“In order to maintain our efforts of breaking into the new era of entertainment, our desire is to keep expanding our portfolio by filling every possible category and genre with fresh, original material that only the talents and creatives of ANIMA can deliver,” said ANIMA Managing Director Bianca Balbuena. “We’re very thrilled that we will be able to show Ero to a wider audience for free through our youtube channel. This is for all school misfits. You are your own superhero!”

ANIMA continues to claim recognition for its numerous platforms that deliver sensational and groundbreaking content be it in film, podcasts, or video production. With ERO, the creative studio further reinforces its formidable presence in the entertainment industry.

JCI together with Palawan Group recognizes the valuable contributions of our beloved Kasambahays

Many of us Filipino families consider our household workers or “kasambahays” as family. And why shouldn’t we? From preparing our food to maintaining the cleanliness of the family abode, our household companions we fondly call them “ate,” “manang,” “manong,” and “kuya” are always there to help us in our everyday busy life. Our indispensable ally against dirty clothes, dusty furniture, babysitting, and hunger for delicious food have always been there for us. They are the foundation of a more comfortable and happy home. A modern-day hero of the Filipino family.

With this, the Junior Chamber International Senate Philippines, Inc. (JCI) together with Palawan Group recognizes the valuable contributions of our beloved Kasambahays and honors their hard work, dedication, and integrity with the Kasambahay Kasambuhay Pilipinas Awards 2022.

Now on its 7th year, the Kasambahay Kasambuhay Pilipinas Awards seeks to inspire and honor our Kasambahays who lovingly serve their employers with hard work, loyalty, and integrity

Bobby Castro, Palawan Pawnshop Group President and CEO

“This program rightfully honors our kasambahays who not only serve their employers with loyalty and integrity but also support their families by sending most of their wages. Kasambahays are selfless not just because they help other people but because they also epitomize the admirable traits of dedication to service, loyalty, and trustworthiness,” said Bobby Castro, Palawan Pawnshop Group President and CEO.

“Our kasambahays provide a range of services denominated as household chores and many of them have become family to us as we encounter them day in and day out in our everyday lives, Hence, it comes as no surprise that many of them have become family to us. “ said JCI National President Sen. Henry T. Juan Tong.

This year’s prizes are even bigger than ever. The Top 10 chosen Kasambahays (minimum of five years in service) will each get Php100,000 as prizes and those who will be chosen for the 11th to 30th places (no minimum years of service) spots will each get a Php10,000 prize. Also, ten (10) of the most liked and shared Facebook posts will win Php5,000 prize.

Just like Palawan Pawnshop Group, Palawan Express Pera Padala, and PalawanPay, our Kasambahays are “matatag, maasahan at mapagkakatiwalaan” and we want to recognize their valuable contribution.

Palawan, a brand trusted for 37 years that carries Palawan Pawnshop Group and Palawan Express Padala, now has over 3,300 branches all over Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. To adapt to the increasing digital transaction needs of its customers, PPG recently introduced PalawanPay, an e-wallet app that lets you send and receive remittances in an instant and also gives users access to other financial services such as bills payment, e-cellphone load, and scan to pay. Because of this app, Kasamabahays are able to send money to their loved ones in a convenient, fast, and secured manner.

It also provides them with extra savings and time to rest since they no longer have to go out to line-up and it gives them peace of mind knowing that their hard-earned money will be immediately received by their family members.

To be eligible for the Kasambahay Kasambuhay Pilipinas Awards 2022, kasambahays can nominate themselves or their employers can do so. They must not be more than 75 years of age and have rendered services for at least 6 years in their present employer.

SM Foundation Sinag Schools program powers up school in Batangas

SM Foundation (SMFI), the corporate social responsibility arm of the SM group, together with Maxeon Solar Technologies, recently powered up the Lemery Pilot Elementary School (LPES) in Batangas through the Sinag Schools program.

This social good collaboration between SMFI and Maxeon aims to provide clean and renewable energy to schools in grassroot communities by installing solar panels on an SM school building, especially to those that have low operating expenses.

In addition to the solar panel installation which intends to power positive change in the way energy is consumed in public schools, the program also aims to enhance the understanding of students in terms of energy management and the need to transition to cleaner energy alternatives with lower environmental impacts.

Through the Sinag Schools program, SMFI and Maxeon installed 21 solar panels— estimated to produce 6510 watt-p—on an SM school building in Batangas.

“Through this program, we want to power up the learning and development of young people. We want to help teach young people about solar energy, about renewable energy. We want to power up the next generation to help save our planet,” Maxeon Fab4 General Manager Glenn Everett said.

The SM school building at the LPES, which was donated by SMFI in partnership with SM Prime Holdings (SMPH) in 2017, now boasts 21 solar panels—estimated to produce 6510 watt-p. With the savings on electricity, the school may realign their budget to more efforts and other innovations that will give the students an environment more conducive to learning.

It takes a village to raise a child

SMFI executive director Debbie Sy underscored the importance of collective efforts in advancing the learning experience of every student in the country: “We believe that collaboration can drive growth and become a force for good in addressing societal challenges. CSR partnerships can create solutions that improve society by fostering learning, promoting innovation and gaining access to new technologies, such as the Sinag schools program. CSR collaboration can pool resources, both financial and human resources - between multiple organizations which can amplify social good impact.”

“The establishment of an ever-evolving CSR strategy and partnerships will help companies and non-government organizations in developing and implementing crucial social good programs over decades while having procedures in place that integrate social and environmental priorities into CSR core strategy – all in close collaboration with stakeholders,” she further added.

Moreover, Everett mentioned how SMFI and Maxeon share the similar set of values and interest when it comes to helping Filipino learners: “We have this concept of powering positive change in the world. We are happy to be working together with SM Foundation to power up the Lemery Pilot Elementary School.”

“Individually, we can do so much. But together we can do actually more. For us to bring our solar technology and SMFI to bring in their schools, these things are much better together than they would be apart,” he concluded.

Spreading social good all the way

SM Foundation made sure to truly touch the lives of the learners and teachers of LPES as it donated eight desktop computers, 200 bags with school supplies, and more than 160 pcs brand new kinder and elementary books to further promote the love for reading among the students. Clothing items for parents were also distributed.
