Huawei Freebuds 4: Unboxing and First Impression

Last month, Huawei released 4 newest wearables and a fitness scale! The Huawei WATCH 3, Freebuds 4, MateView GT, and Scale 3.

The Huawei FreeBuds 4 is the brand’s latest open-fit ANC earphones and has been getting praised for its enhanced open-fit ANC 2.0, comfortable wearing experience and amazing audio quality. It’s bass enhancement combined with the 14.3mm large dynamic unit, allows the headset to maintain a consistently high level of sound quality.

I finally got my own Huawei freebuds 4 and I was very excited to test it out.

But first it’s time to unbox it!

The Huawei Freebuds 4 comes in a white box with the Huawei branding in gold and a photo of the Freebuds 4 on front.

Lifting up the box reveals the Huawei Freebuds 4 case and underneath you’ll find some are paper documents including a quick start guide, warranty card and safety information.

The Freebuds 4 unit inside its charging case and you also get a USB A to USB-C charging cable.

The FreeBuds 4 are available in ceramic white and silver frost colorways. I have the ceramic white version which is clean and classic. Those who want a more daring, shiny finish should check out the silver frost version instead.  The case has a smooth finish but can be slippery so if you could find a pouch or case, best to get one.

The design of HUAWEI FreeBuds 4 integrates both design and technology to provide a comfortable and stylish wearing experience. With the ergonomic simulation and lightweight design, users can wear the HUAWEI FreeBuds 4 for a long period of time without any discomfort.

Also, the curved design and colors turn the earphones into a fashion accessory. The key to comfort lies in HUAWEI FreeBuds 4’s emphasis on details and its pursuit of form and function. Thanks to the ergonomic simulation system grounded by 10,000+ human ear models, and the extensive stress simulation test on eight parts of the ear, the comfort assessment of HUAWEI FreeBuds 4 is conducted objectively to guarantee optimal wearing comfort for every user.

The charging case of the HUAWEI FreeBuds 4 adopts a symmetrically round design. Coupled with the exquisite design, it embodies the relentless pursuit of art and design. Inspired by the innate characteristics of the circle, the round charging case overall exhibits a simplistic yet sophisticated feel.

PAIRING AND CONTROLS

Connecting the HUAWEI FreeBuds 4 with nearby devices is very simple. Thanks to the proximity Bluetooth connection, when users open the charging case for the first time, the earphones will automatically enter pairing mode and nearby Huawei devices will be able to discover the earphones. This fast and convenient pairing method also supports PC, providing an easier method for consumers to pair their earphones to PCs.

If its already been paired it with another device, just press the side button on the case for around two seconds until the LED light starts blinking, then can pair it as normal.

For those using Huawei smartphones, pairing is almost automatic and it will recognize the FreeBuds 4 right away when it enters pairing mode. I was also happy to discover that the FreeBuds 4 can maintain up to two active Bluetooth connections so you don’t have to manually switch from your phone to your laptop or tablet.

Then there’s Ai Life, Huawei’s all-in-one app which you could download from the Huawei APPGallery to unlock more features of the Freebuds 4.

The Huawei Freebuds features intuitive touch controls so you don’t have to reach for your phone to pause or change the volume or answer a call.

To pause/play whatever you’re listening to or watching all you have to do is double-tap on the earphone stem. Do a long press to answer an incoming call and long press on either earbud turns ANC off or on. To adjust the volume simply slide up or down on the earphone stem. It also has wear detection which means it will automatically stop when you remove it and resume one you put it back on.

NOTABLE FEATURES:

Earphones could mean more than just music listening or voice call and the HUAWEI FreeBuds 4 reshapes what a pair of earphones could achieve, offering users to enjoy a new lifestyle with better entertainment. HUAWEI FreeBuds 4 feature a high-sensitivity microphone, which can record high resolution sound with a sample rate of up to 48 kHz, retaining the rich audio details.

Live streaming is the new trend. To meet the needs of the streamers, HUAWEI FreeBuds 4 offer powerful audio pickup and noise cancellation to allow them to start streaming anywhere. Also, users can turn on the Voices Mode in HUAWEI AI Life app to enhance the voice and reduce the environmental noise, so the viewers can hear the streamer’s voice clearly.

For gamers the HUAWEI Freebuds 4 supports Low Latency Mode, which is perfect for users who require quick reactions when playing games. With the new game audio coding, HUAWEI FreeBuds 4 can achieve delay as low as 150ms in game.

That’s it for my unboxing and initial impressions of the Huawei Freebuds 4. I’m excited to try out all its features. I'll have my full review soon!

Enjoy an Immersive Listening Experience with HUAWEI FreeBuds 4’s High-Resolution Audio Quality

Huawei’s new open-fit Active Noise Cancellation 2.0 earphones, HUAWEI FreeBuds 4, have been praised by many Filipino users for features such as enhanced open-fit ANC 2.0a comfortable wearing experience, and immersive audio quality. Moreover, its bass enhancement combined with the 14.3mm large dynamic unit, allows the headset to maintain a consistently high level of sound quality.

Each person's ear shape is different, and the condition of wearing earphones is different each time, which is why the same earphones can be experienced differently for different users. So, how to make every user hear the best possible sound? The question has plagued acoustic engineers for a long time. Through a complete set of personalized hearing technologies, adaptive ear matching (AEM), professional sound effects, Huawei customizes the sound for each user.

Adaptive ear matching (AEM) for customizable and comfortable listening experience

The differences in people’s ear shapes and sizes will affect the tightness of wearing the earphone, leading consumers to have non-identical listening experiences with the same pair of earphones. For users with bigger ears, the ear canal is likely wider and the gap between the earphones is also wider, so some of the sounds will slip away, and the bass performance will be impaired. However, users with smaller ears have relatively too much bass because they are wearing the earphones tightly.

Compared with in-ear earphones, open-fit earphones are more sensitive to different wearing styles and ear sizes, the acoustic environment is more prone to change, and that’s why sound quality differs to different people.

In response to this user pain point, HUAWEI FreeBuds 4 adopts the technology of Adaptive Ear Matching technology, so that users get consistent and delicate audio quality. First of all, by using sound wave detection technology, the earphones determine the current user’s ear canal shape and wearing tightness. The earphones then adapt personalized sound effects to match the user’s ear automatically. That could compensate for the sound loss due to ear size and wearing condition effectively. Adaptive Ear Matching technology brings the best possible listening experience to HUAWEI FreeBuds 4 users.

Professional sound effects for various music genre

Additionally, the HUAWEI FreeBuds 4 has a variety of professional and personalized sound effects built-in to perfectly manage different music genres.

HUAWEI FreeBuds 4 currently supports three modes of EQ: balanced (default), bass boost, and treble boost. Consumers can choose a mode that suits them depending on the scenario. Among them, the bass boost mode enhances the bass, providing users with immersive sound effects when listening to songs. The treble boost mode will increase the sensitivity of the earphones to higher frequencies, making the sound of the earphones more transparent, and restoring the rich high-pitched detail. The three distinctive modes also provide consumers with more personalized choices.

Treble Boost The instrument shows more detail and the sound is fuller and brighter.

Bass Boost Boost the bass energy and you can feel the shock of the scene.

Balanced (Default) The sound is original and the voice is more prominent and infectious.

The professional acoustic design brings high-resolution sound quality

Audio quality is a basic requirement of earphones, and an important factor for consumers when choosing their earphones. When using the earphones to listen to music, the audio details produced by the earphone is very important. HUAWEI FreeBuds 4 adopts the classic dynamic driver structure to bring consumers a better listening experience. Moreover, it features the Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) composite diaphragm that supports a frequency range of up to 40kHz, improving the middle and treble sounds.

Moreover, HUAWEI FreeBuds 4 come with a 14.3mm super large diaphragm which makes the amplitude larger and the bass more powerful. Together with the newly upgraded bass booster, bass tube, and motherboard, it forms an independently sealed sound cavity, and the volume of the bass tube is increased by 15%. This also provides an intensified resonance effect from the air and diaphragm. When users are listening to music with the HUAWEI FreeBuds 4, they can enjoy more powerful bass and more immersive sound.

In addition to high-level hardware quality, Huawei continues to provide consumers with a better sound quality experience through software features. Huawei audio products have always been committed to bringing consumers the ultimate listening experience, and they will also bring more amazing products in the future.
