McDonald’s Philippines together with PLDT Smart has extended the SIM Registration of Smart and TNT subscribers

Supporting the country’s efforts toward data privacy and protection, McDonald’s Philippines, along with PLDT wireless arm Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), has extended the SIM Registration of Smart and TNT subscribers in selected McDonald’s stores around the country.

McDonald’s, in partnership with Smart, played a pivotal role in supporting the initial run of the nationwide SIM Registration as it turned 35 selected McDonald’s stores with unused party areas into temporary SIM Registration sites.

By offering their stores as locations for SIM Registration for Smart and TNT subscribers, McDonald’s Philippines provides accessibility and convenience for more Filipinos, especially mobile users who may need assistance in registering their SIMs.

Since the launch of the temporary sites in April, over 10,000 Smart and TNT subscribers have successfully registered their SIMs in selected McDonald’s stores.

Participating McDonald’s Stores

As the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has extended the SIM Registration until July 25, 2023, to ensure that Filipinos will have more chances to prevent SIM deactivation, McDonald’s and Smart will continue assisting customers in participating McDonald’s Stores:

On July 3, 5, 10: Mart One, Capas, Calapan Roxas Drive, Calapan, Pili CamSur, Marymart Iloilo, Pavia, Kabankalan City, Robinson's Place Iloilo, Pison Avenue, Cadiz, San Carlos, Araneta Bacolod, Tagum Highway, Limketkai, Valencia, Downtown Butuan, San Franz, Butuan Gaisano, and Gaisano Capital Surigao

      On July 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 19, 24: Naga City Plaza and W Mall Bay City.

All Smart and TNT subscribers only need to bring a valid government ID to register at the nearest McDonald’s participating stores. Registration is free for all walk-in customers.

To further encourage SIM Registration, individuals who register in McDonald’s stores have a chance to win McDonald’s treats.

“With our continued commitment to nation-building, McDonald’s Philippines supports the government’s push for SIM registration by making it accessible to more Filipino communities. Just like how we turned our party areas into study halls (McClassroom) during the pandemic, we continue to maximize the use of our stores to cater to the evolving needs of the communities we’re in,” Oliver Rabatan, McDonald’s Philippines Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer.

New and existing Smart Prepaid and TNT customers may also visit PLDT and Smart Stores, or access Smart’s SIM Registration portal through https://www.smart.com.ph/simreg. Meanwhile, Smart postpaid customers are considered registered using existing account details, in accordance with the SIM Registration act.

McDonald’s Philippines will be providing over 20,000 career opportunities to Filipinos

With now close to 60,000 employees to date, McDonald’s Philippines—under its master franchise holder and owner Dr. George T. Yang and President and CEO Kenneth S. Yang—will be providing over 20,000 career opportunities to Filipinos as it continues to open more stores all over the country.

“With every new store that we open, we are able to provide employment opportunities in local  communities where the store is located. We directly hire all our people and do not practice contractualization. This has always been the way we hire our people since our chairman, Dr. George T. Yang opened the 1st McDonald’s in the Philippines in Morayta, Manila in 1981—and it is something that we will continue to do. We believe that if our people working in the restaurants have job security first, it will allow them to focus and do well in their job of serving our customers. ” said Kenneth S. Yang, President and CEO of McDonald’s Philippines.

Proud McDonald’s managers and crew ready to bring more feel-good moments in stores nationwide

More than job security, McDonald’s Philippines takes pride in the world-class training it provides its people, making them competitive in the industry as they get to learn global systems and processes in restaurant service. Through a robust learning and development curriculum, McDonald’s employees are able to not just learn life-long skills but grow and progress in the company.

McDonald’s employees also receive annual salary increases, insurance, hospital and medical benefits, special employee discounts, and other allowances.

According to the fast-food chain, priority areas for hiring Management Trainees are Nueva Ecija, Isabela, Montalban, Dumaguete, Bacolod, Makati, Manila, Quezon City, Pampanga, Tagaytay, Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Quezon, Rizal, Lucena and Pasig City. Priority areas for crew members are ParaƱaque, Manila, Pasay, Pasig, Marikina, Taytay, Antipolo, Kidapawan, and Davao City.

Equal Opportunity Employer

McDonald’s Philippines takes pride in being an equal opportunity employer, providing career opportunities to working students and Filipinos from all walks of life—regardless of background, age, gender, or sexual orientation.

From the crew room to the boardroom, the quick service restaurant (QSR) giant is driven by a good representation of women with more than 50% taking vital positions and leadership roles.

Along with providing regular employment, McDonald’s Philippines also ensures a safe and inclusive workplace that allows its people to thrive. As one of the country’s biggest employers, McDonald’s Philippines champions equity where all employees, whether in its head office or stores, have equal access to training and development and advancement opportunities.

McDonald’s extends this to more members of the community with programs like WIP or Workforce Immersion Program. WIP provides training for Senior High School students by allowing them firsthand experience of the fast food industry and its operations; the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES), in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), where McDonald’s helps in providing jobs for underprivileged students and out-of-school youth through employing them to become McDonald’s crew members. Since adopting SPES in 2011, McDonald’s has provided 16,319 Filipino youth with employment opportunities.

In partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Philippine Business for Education (PBEd), McDonald’s Alternative Workforce Program offers work-based training positions for 5,000 unemployed and out-of-school youths through YouthWorksPH to provide beneficiaries with financial knowledge, skills, and access to resources necessary to effectively manage finances through adulthood.

Among the Philippines’ best employers

McDonald’s Philippines was also recognized as one of the Philippines’ best employers in the inaugural list of The Philippines’ Best Employers for 2023 by the Philippine Daily Inquirer and international market research firm Statista. The list shared a ranking of the country’s top-rated employers as evaluated by their employees.

“We are thrilled to have been named as one of the country’s best employers for 2023. This is not just a testament to our commitment, and the work we have done for our people, but it is also a challenge for us to always be a step better to bring out the best in them,” said Margot B. Torres, Managing Director, McDonald’s Philippines.

With more new store openings slated this 2023, McDonald’s Philippines will continue serving the communities they operate in to ensure its people — crew and customers alike, can continue enjoying more feel-good moments with McDonald’s.

Smart partners with McDonald’s Philippines to provide students with a safe and conducive learning space outside their schools

For the third year, PLDT wireless subsidiary Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) teamed up with McDonald’s Philippines in its thrust to provide students with a safe and conducive learning space outside their schools, this time by opening its doors to the 'Night Classroom' in 60 participating stores nationwide.

The 'McDonald’s Night Classroom' is a continuation of the McDonald's Classroom initiative which started in 2020, wherein approximately 250 unused party rooms were converted into spaces for teachers and students to conduct their virtual classes and fulfill their online learning needs.

Now that schools have reopened, McDonald’s Philippines tweaked the project to cater to those who need a safe and suitable place to do their homework, review, and do research online beyond school hours.

Worry-free online learning experience

In support of the project, Smart provided free WiFi access via Smart WiFi installations in McDonald’s stores, and Smart Bro Pocket WiFi units in other participating venues. This allowed Night Classroom participants to connect online and make the most of the Philippines' fastest and best mobile network, as recognized by Ookla, the global leader in mobile and network broadband intelligence.

Powered by Smart, McDonald’s Night Classroom participants enjoyed a worry-free online learning experience – through accessing the internet and being able to upload and download heavy files in seconds, surf the web for information in an instant, and stream instructional videos without buffering.

Over 40,000 McDonald's Night Classroom participants

From its launch on March 28 until May 31, the McDonald's Night Classroom project benefited over 40,000 participants at 60 McDonald's branches nationwide, making a positive impact on the life of teachers and students.

“McDonald’s has always been a safe and trusted space to create feel-good moments for all—whether you’re a family celebrating a birthday, an employee getting their coffee fix before work, or a student looking for a place to pull an all-nighter. Students have already been treating McDonald’s as their go-to place for meetings or study sessions, so the McDonald’s Night Classroom is our special way of supporting them with their schoolwork,” said Oliver Rabatan, McDonald's Philippines Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer.

“We recognize the huge role of mobile technology in making education more accessible and bringing the world of learning to one’s fingertips. This partnership allowed us to work hand in hand to create connected and safe spaces for learning and help students and teachers achieve academic success. It's our pleasure to provide free WiFi access at McDonald's Night Classrooms nationwide for uninterrupted work and study sessions," said Anton Agustin, Smart AVP and Head for Consumer WiFi & Mobile Advertising.

Philippines’ Fastest and Best Mobile Network

Smart is the first and only Philippine mobile operator to win Ookla’s Best Mobile Network award in Q1-Q2 2022 and Q3-Q4 2022 . To get this rare and prestigious recognition, Smart won both the Fastest Mobile Network and Best Mobile Coverage awards within the same reporting periods.

As of end-March 2023, Smart's 3G, 4G/LTE and 5G network covers 97 percent of the country's population.

McDonald’s Philippines achieved record-breaking sales in 2022, surpassing its pre-pandemic (2019) sales performance

Owned and operated by its Chairman and Owner Dr. George T. Yang and President and CEO Kenneth Yang— the quick service restaurant (QSR) giant attributes its performance not just to strong consumer mobility and post-pandemic behavior but to its continuous commitment to providing value for money, exciting limited-time menu offers, and an elevated omnichannel customer experience.

McDonald’s Philippines’ strong performance in 2022 wouldn’t have been possible if not for the trust and continuous support of our customers all over the country. As we aim to consistently improve how we serve McDonald’s favorites to every Filipino, we are equally committed to providing feel-good experiences to our people [crew and managers] who make it all happen in our stores, and in communities where we operate for many years to come,” said Kenneth Yang, President and CEO of McDonald’s Philippines.

Feeling good, feeling safe

From its first store opening in Morayta, Manila in 1981, McDonald’s Philippines continues to uphold global food safety and quality standards in the preparation and service of its food whether through dine-in, take-out, Drive-Thru, or McDelivery.

This was further strengthened during the pandemic as part of its M Safe program, introduced in 2020.

The company doubledowned on food safety and quality efforts through continuous monitoring, and crew and manager training, which contributed to its thirdparty food safety audit results and customer perception scores on safety and trust.

Since the launch of M Safe, the company’s findings on ‘brand trust’ increased by 5.4% which contributed to increased dine-in guest count, lifting market share for McDonald’s in 2022.

Setting the standard for doing good

McDonald’s takes pride in its global learning and development programs from Crew Training to Restaurant Leadership courses to its Digital Academy. As one of the biggest employers in the country, McDonald’s Philippines believes that everyone has the opportunity to grow and succeed in the company which starts by first having job security. McDonald’s is the first quick-service restaurant in the country to practice a direct hiring policy, providing regular employment to all its crew members. In 2022, McDonald’s Philippines hired more than 17,000 new employees in support of its new store openings—employing working students regardless of race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation.

To date, the company has close to 60,000 employees in over 700 stores across the Philippines— with over 47,000 employees in Luzon, close to 6,000 employees in Visayas, and 5,000 employees in Mindanao.

Serving meals with kindness

McDonald’s also prioritizes its commitment to the communities where it operates. To serve meals to underserved families without access to food, McDonald’s Philippines launched the Kindness Kitchen, a flagship program of its charity of choice, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC).

In December 2022, Kindness Kitchen has served over 800,000 meals, a 33% increase from 600,000 meals served in May. The initiative aims to serve 1 million meals by the end of 2023.

By continuously improving the quality of food, providing growth opportunities to its people, and creating a positive impact in communities, McDonald’s exemplifies always being a step ahead in upholding its commitment to world-class excellence.

Yang reiterates, “It is these customers we serve, the people working in our restaurants and communities that we help that inspire and motivate us to be and do better. As many Filipinos continue to face challenges and recover from the pandemic, we want to be a place where they can experience feel-good moments. We want to be a company that Filipinos today and the future can trust.”

McDonald’s Philippines announces the transition of all of its stores across the Philippines to strawless lids

Quick service restaurant giant McDonald’s Philippines, majority owned and operated by its Master Franchise Holders, Chairman & Founder Dr. George T. Yang and President & CEO Kenneth Yang, announces the transition of all of its stores across the Philippines to strawless lids, marking another milestone in the company’s sustainability initiatives.

McDonald’s is the first QSR giant to go strawless for its iced beverages, underlining the company’s commitment to reduce waste by eliminating the need for a separate plastic straw, while keeping drinking convenient for customers whether they’re at home or on-the-go. This is one of McDonald’s latest efforts for its Green & Good platform-- the company’s commitment to the environment, by developing and scaling sustainable restaurant solutions in its stores.

The strawless lids are designed to complement favorite McDonald’s beverages, continuously giving customers that familiar feel-good experience whenever they enjoy their favorite McCafĆ© Premium Roast Coffee and other cold beverages served without sundae.

“The adoption of strawless lids is part of our commitment to be better for the environment. We recognize the role we play and the impact we can make by committing to innovate and scale initiatives that reduce waste. By making strawless lids permanent, waste reduction, one less straw at a time becomes something that our customers can easily integrate to their experience at McDonald’s,” says McDonald’s Philippines President & CEO Kenneth S. Yang.

The shift to strawless lids comes after McDonald’s first introduced the limited distribution of straws across its branches in 2018. The company is able to take a bigger step towards climate action by going strawless nationwide, now making it a permanent and sustainable solution.

McDonald’s has also implemented other projects under its Green & Good platform. In 2020, McDonald’s opened its first Green & Good flagship store in U.N. Avenue in Manila and in 2021, its second Green and Good store in Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong. Since, the company has expanded Green & Good with the introduction of new solutions in its restaurants like solar rooftop panels.

In support of active sustainable mobility to reduce carbon emissions, McDonald’s also empowers the biking community through its inclusive dining solutions such as bike racks and Bike and Dine areas available in its stores. McDonald’s, in partnership with eSakay, is also providing e-charging stations in the same branch, where e-bikes and e-scooters can plug in for a minimal fee of Php1 for a minute’s worth of charge.

Be updated on the next Green & Good initiative by following McDonald’s PH on FacebookTwitter and Instagram.

McDonald's opens new solar-powered restaurants

Quick service restaurant giant McDonald’s Philippines, majority owned and operated by its Master Franchise Holder, Chairman & Founder Dr. George T. Yang is poised to strengthen its Green & Good intiative, the company’s commitment to the environment, by scaling innovative and sustainable restaurant solutions in more of its new stores in the country.

Since 2020, McDonald’s has opened two Green & Good flagship stores in Manila and Mandaluyong to test and learn green solutions for sustainable restaurant practices. Previously, the company also conducted a pilot test in its Quezon Avenue, Quezon City and Malasiqui, Pangasinan stores to explore rooftop solar power systems.

Today, McDonald’s is now set to roll out its first batch of new stores in Arayat, Pampanga and Ligao, Albay to be solar-powered. These stores are equipped with grid-tied/on-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) systems connected to the local utility grid and is a cost-effective option to supplement energy requirements. With potentially more than 70,000 KWH in estimated annual power generation, equivalent to approximately less 17,000 kg of CO2 emissions. With the solar rooftop being its significant source of electricity, McDonald’s will be able to power these stores with clean and renewable energy, enhancing its other sustainable solutions for its restaurants.

The newest solar-powered McDonald’s store in Arayat, Pampanga. These solar panels will become a significant source of electricity for the restaurant, providing employees and customers with clean and renewable energy.

“McDonald's Philippines is embarking on our journey towards becoming a better McDonald's for the environment. We recognize the role we play and the impact we can make by committing to learn and scale initiatives that reduce waste and emissions”, shared McDonald’s Philippines President & CEO Kenneth S. Yang. “Our goal is for our stores to become sustainable developments that feature sustainable restaurant solutions that enable waste reduction, energy conservation, upcycling, and inclusive dining solutions.”

Similar to its existing branches in U.N. Del Pilar Manila and Shaw Wack-Wack Mandaluyong, the new stores will also feature solar lamp posts, photo and motion sensors, and high-performance glass film as part of its utility efficiency solutions, as well as eco-friendly air conditioning for less energy consumption. Green building solutions such as light gauge steel frames, ecopavers/panels and concrete fiber are incorporated as well. Meanwhile, sustainable packaging, proper waste disposal, and active mobility continue to be part of Green & Good stores’ upcycling and inclusive dining experiences.

This year, the company projects to further expand its commitment to the environment by opening more new Green & Good flagship stores in the country and convert more of its existing stores to use solar power energy.
