#SportsforEveryJuan: Decathlon opens its first “City” concept store at the SM North EDSA

Decathlon, the world’s largest sports retailer, opened its first “City” concept store at the SM North EDSA last November 26, 2021.

The first time I heard about Decathlon was when I accompanied my partner to buy some warmers, leggings  and winter shoes in Pasig for his London trip.  That was when I discovered some affordable fitness and gym shirts for me too.

When we were abroad, we would eventually looking for a Decathlon and would hoard gloves, leggings and shorts too.

That's why I was happy to learn that Decathlon has opened  in SM North Edsa, who would not be if youre a sports enthusiast like me and our place is near the SM North Edsa.

Located at Level 2 North Towers Building, the new branch brings the number of Decathlon branches to four with another one scheduled to open at the SM Mall of Asia. Quezon City Vice Mayor Gian Sotto, a sports enthusiast himself, joined the opening ceremonies to formally open the new store.

The story of Decathlon in the Philippines unfolded in 2017 offering over 70 sports under one roof through its first store in Alabang, Muntinlupa. This was followed by Decathlon Pasig at the Tiendesitas Shopping Centre and Decathlon Masinag located at Marcos Highway, Antipolo.Further expansion is planned as multiple stores are expected in the next two years.

Earlier this year, Decathlon announced its partnership with  the largest mall developer--SM Supermalls to build more hubs for multisport lovers within Metro Manila.

“We want Decathlon to become one of the most loved brands in the Philippines. Thanks to the innovation and unbeatable value of our passion brands, we continue to deliver the best quality and safety to guarantee customer satisfaction,” Decathlon Philippines CEO Hans Iff said in an interview.

As more Filipinos become more concious about becoming fit and living healthy lifestyles, the fresher and more digital “City” concept gives them access to over 5,000 products for over 70 sports. The brand also  promises to make multiple sports accessible through digital and omni-channel features as well as faster shopping through self-checkout and RFID technology. Bundled with these digital solutions will be classic Decathlon services like click and collect, free membership and free product testing.

The Decathlon motto of #SportsForEveryJuan comes alive even within the confines of these smaller “city” concept stores but you’ll still find a wide selection of affordable sportswear, shoes, equipment, and gear for over 70 sports—that’s actually more sports than you probably enumerate on top of your head--making it the most complete stores you can ever find.

To make sport accessible for everyjuan, their products are actually available to test and try, so you can get a feel for something before deciding to buy it at a price most can afford.  As soon as you enter the store you will see tents pitched like a campsite so you could get inside and feel how spacious it is. There are racks of sports wear for gym, yoga and every other sports, there are even bicycle lanes so kids can try out the bikes or rollerskates.

Speaking of cycling, the store has a varied selection of bikes for hardcore, endurance, off-track, recreational, or beginner--as well as smaller bikes for your children.

The physical stores are interactive, and best for those who want to tryout the sizes or learn more about the sport from their very well informed staff. If some sizes or products are not available you can simply head over to their online store and arrange for either pickup or delivery of the merchandise.

If you are new  or just starting to get interested in a sport, the Decathlon staff are more than ready to assist as they too are often enthusiasts of the sports they represent. So instead of just someone assigned to sell a product, the staff can offer advice about the sport itself as they have real knowledge and experience of what he/she is offering to you.

Have a glitter-y and critter-y christmas at SM City North Edsa

SM North Edsa never stops offering theme celebration during the holidays. This time around  Glitter Critter Characters will be at SM The Block and Sky Garden during the Holiday season to give joy to kids and kids at heart.

Everything is merry and bright at SM City North EDSA as it celebrates a Glitter Critter Christmas for kids of all ages.

Leading the festivities are the mall’s Glitter Critter Characters from the Planet Hopitu, who led by Cop, looked for explorers from the citizens of Planet Hopitu to join him on his mission to find the happiest place in the universe. The Critters made their biggest discovery and found a spectacular place full of wonder and joy in SM City North EDSA.

After their arrival, the Glitter Critter Characters Cop, Boom, Chum, Lox, Cola and Lola, Puchik, Ching, Twinkle, Mick, Boloo, 0nd Bobo explored the mall, discovered Christmas, and decided to make it even more festive and fun.

Cap together with the Glitter Critters transformed The Block and Skygarden into a happy ploy pork in glittering lights where the Glitter Critters play around and enjoy the holiday season. At the Skygorden, one can find Glitter Critter ploy pork installations: the KIDS Mountain, the Space Shuttle Sleigh which Baloo and Baba pilot to deliver gifts and Christmas magic; and the Fun Christmas Roller Coaster Ride, which kids can share with their new-found friends.

Likewise, SM City North EDSA will make the world go RAWR this Christmas during the special Meet and Greet sessions with the Glitter Critter Characters on November 17, 24 and December 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29 at The Block and Skygarden.

They will get to meet up close Cap, the wisest of the critter bunch and the captain of the expedition; Boom, the DJ of the critter planet who loves music: Chum, the foodie always hungry critter who thinks of food all the time: and Lox, the mischievous critter who stalks Cop, sneaking into the ship to join the expedition.

Kids will be spellbound with A Magical Science Show by Nutty Scientist on November 30 and December 16: and get a chance to share their wishes as they Meet and Greet Santa on December 2, 9, 23, 24, and 25, at The Block Atrium. Christmas is definitely in the air with live performances from the NU Chorale  on December 7, as well as Ben&Ben, Keiko Necessario, Leanne & Nooro and December Avenue. Northern skies will light up with the Grand Firework Display on December 15, 22, and 29.

The Glitter Critter Christmas is one of the many exciting seasonal events at SM City North EDSA. #SMGIitterCritterChristmas

Take a peak at other countries through PSID’s “Globalscapes”

One of the most exciting and most enriching things one can do is to travel. You get to learn so much, from art and architecture to local customs to even spirituality, all while having fun. Every country has something very unique to offer visitors.

However, going on a trip around the world can be quite expensive. Now, you can do just that while marveling at exquisitely-designed spaces for free as the Philippine School of Interior Design (PSID) Advanced Class of 2014 holds “Globalscapes”, a graduation exhibit running from Oct. 1-31 at the Super Sale Hall of SM North EDSA, Quezon City.

Marking the 47th year of PSID, this year’s exhibit showcases 22 exquisitely-designed spaces that showcase the beauty and cultural richness across six continents. The students not only took into account their assigned country’s culture but also basic design principles and ergonomics.

"What we want visitors to the exhibit to feel is that they have traveled around the world. At the same time, we want them to get to know a country through our exhibit,” says PSID Advanced Class of 2014 advisor Nicky Jardenil. The exhibit is divided into different continents.

One of the booths in the Africa section is Egypt, an elegant kitchen design by Michelle Almanzor, Pamela Carunungan, Samantha Flores, Patrice Huang, and Christinne Maron featuring the black and gold motif of luxurious Egyptian temples. The booth features pyramid-shaped lighting with settings for cooking and entertaining, marble countertops and island, custom-designed seating inspired by the Egyptian klismos chair, and a fully-stocked wine cellar. The kitchen also features clever and practical storage solutions such as a cabinet in the kitchen columns, a built-in cabinet for pet bowls, and Press Memory cabinets and drawers that open with just a slight push.

The South Africa dining room by Jasmine Bullecer, Paola Engracia, Michael Go, Felix Guerra, Nydia Ochoa, and Dana Uy that incorporates safari culture and Ndebele art. There’s also Kenya, a design for a living room by Cat Arambulo-Antonio, Myrrh Astrid Cortes, Kim Tan, Janis Tesoro, Kady Robles, and Sharlene Yu that takes inspiration from the kraal, the traditional houses of the Maasai tribe.

Turkey’s famous baths and mix of East and West are interpreted into a lovely Hagia Sophia-inspired bathroom space by VitoyBernabaye, Lauren Chua, Shirley Chua, Tina Mendoza, and Daphne Ong. The space features a walk-through layout, a luxurious tub area , and a mix of Christian and Muslim design elements

“Turkey is the only country that’s both in Europe and Asia, so we wanted to combine design elements from East and West. To us, there was no better place to look for inspiration than the Hagia Sophia,” says group member Vitoy Bernabaye.

The vibrant culture of the Americans also comes to life at the PSID exhibit. Ann Chua, Czarina Indigne, Arata Kobayashi, and Valerie San Antonio do an unexpected take on the USA through a kitchen design that incorporates Native American design elements, particularly that of the Lakota tribe. Their main inspiration is the dreamcatcher, a motif seen in the dreamcatcher-shaped ceiling and the twig-inspired chandelier. The kitchen is also painted in a bold mustard shade common in Native American cultures and an incorporation of Native American symbolism.
