Watsons partners with Unilever and Plastic Bank for the Planet

Top health and beauty retailer teams with multinational consumer company Unilever and social enterprise Plastic Bank in the efforts to protect and preserve the environment.

Through Watsons, Unilever launched Gift for Good in 2021, offering shoppers sustainable beauty products, including the hair and skin product brand Love, Beauty, and Planet.

Every purchase of a product from Gift for Good campaign supported the fight against plastic waste while improving the lives of the collectors.

Watsons also established a partnership with Plastic Bank in 2021, which resulted in 833,000 plastic bottles saved from the ocean, 16,700 kg of ocean-bound plastic collected.

“This is a joint collaboration between Watsons, Unilever and our customers toward sustainability, which has a massive impact on protecting the environment. By sharing the vision to be a purposeful business, we are able to build a healthier environment and a more sustainable society,” said Viki Encarnacion, PR and Sustainability Director of Watsons Philippines.

With the rising plastic pollution problem, Plastic Bank works to keep plastic out of oceans while building ethical recycling ecosystems for coastal communities. It benefits communities as this initiative invites people to join the plastic collection program in exchange for basic family necessities such as food, clean drinking water, and financial help.

Plastic Bank has given livelihood to over 1,500 people in the Philippines while creating a positive impact on the environment.

With Watsons’ sustainability programs, encouraging Filipinos to be a part of a positive impact of helping the environment has become more attainable, and visioning a sustainable society is now possible.

Unilever is kicking off their Yes to Positive Beauty Sale this May 17-19, 2021 with Shopee!

Yes to Positive Beauty is a movement for all Filipinos to champion a new era of beauty and personal care that’s inclusive, equitable and sustainable too.

Now more than ever, people are becoming more and more conscious about what they buy and consume, supporting brands that align with their values and offer products that do more good than harm. In the same way, companies and brands have been shifting to adopt the same level of responsibility when it comes to the products they offer and the messages they send to their audiences, resulting in purposeful actions that demonstrate care not just for people but also for the planet.

Unilever, one of the leading global corporations, recognizes their role in doing just that and in recent years, has been reinforcing positive action across its brands. In the Philippines, the company’s Beauty and Personal Care Category, home to beloved brands like Cream Silk, Pond’s, Lifebuoy, Closeup and Love Beauty and Planet, to name a few, unveils its renewed purpose called Yes to Positive Beauty. This is a commitment to bring about positive change through real actions - to do more good, not just less harm, for people and the planet.

“Our new thrust, Yes to Positive Beauty, is a movement not just for us, but for all Filipinos to champion a new era of beauty and personal care that’s inclusive, equitable and sustainable,” says Dorothy Dee-Ching, Unilever Philippines’ Vice President for Beauty and Personal Care. “As the number one beauty and personal care company in the country, we acknowledge the part we play in being a force for good, and Yes to Positive Beauty encompasses our commitment to do this through our brands.”

Four Steps to Positive Beauty

As the beginning of their commitment towards doing more good, Unilever Philippines identifies four key pillars of purpose:

1.     Yes to health and wellbeing

After a year that has heightened the importance of health and hygiene, Unilever commits to making hygiene more accessible and affordable for all Filipino families. Partnering with the Philippine Public Health Association, Unilever, through its trusted brands Lifebuoy and Closeup, launched the Hygiene 101 Campaign, a digital information drive equipping Filipinos with 101 hygiene practices to live by.

2.     Yes to equal opportunities

Pushing forward the agenda on gender equity, Unilever makes a conscientious effort to provide opportunities for Filipinos across the country. Starting in 2020, Unilever partnered with Mano Amiga and Shopee to create a grant for up to 25 microentrepreneurs to start or restart their business. The grant included not just monetary funding, but also access to training programs for skills needed to sustain their enterprise, and the Shopee marketplace to give life to their business online.

Another partnership piloted in 2020, Cream Silk has teamed up with Edukasyon.ph, the largest education technology platform in the country, to provide Filipinas with the tools they need to be ready for the next opportunity. This 2021, they launched the #ConditionedForGreater Online Academy, a series of free one-hour certificate courses aligned with skills needed to land a new job, even during a recession.

3.     Yes to beauty inclusivity

As one of the top advertisers in the country, Unilever also recognizes how its brands can do their part in shifting beauty standards to combat discrimination and championing inclusion not just in their communications but also across all efforts. The company’s flagbearer for all kinds of beauty, Dove has continued to create safe spaces for all Filipinos to embrace their unique beauty. This year, Pond’s is shifting its products and campaigns to veer away from whitening, empowering Filipinas to love and care for their skin.

Just this April, Unilever also launched its very own online portal www.BeautyHub.ph, a content hub celebrating a progressive, inclusive and tolerant world, representing all types of shapes, sizes, orientations, ages, religions and more. Your everyday beauty expert, www.BeautyHub.PH celebrates unique experiences through features and content that’s helpful, authentic and positive.

4.     Yes to sustainability

In order to reduce their environmental impact and reinforce its commitment towards more sustainable practices, Unilever has taken key steps across its personal care brands to use less or better plastic.

Unilever says yes to sustainability by saying no to bubble wrap and replacing it with sustainable eco-wrap for purchases from E-commerce platform Shopee. The company is taking this small step as they continue working with partners to optimize their packaging and further reduce plastic use.

Saying Yes to Positive Beauty

Inviting everyone to join them in their renewed commitment, Unilever is kicking off their Yes to Positive Beauty Sale this May 17-19, 2021 with Shopee! Addressing water pollution among Asia Pacific countries’ priorities

With the theme “Building Inclusive Economies, Building a Better World”, the recent Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit held in Manila, not only gathered 21 heads of state of member countries to formulate policy initiatives and recommendations towards improving economic conditions, but also to discuss environmental issues such as water pollution that threaten and hinder inclusive growth and development.

Under the APEC Summit’s key priority of “building sustainable and resilient communities”, addressing water pollution issues will help ensure improved access to clean water.

In a public-private dialogue on water, one of the activities leading up to the APEC Summit, government and private sector representatives, and experts from eight member economies presented their solutions to challenges such as water shortage and water pollution, securing drinking water, and mitigating water pollution, especially in urban areas.

Among the good practices shared during the dialogue were a septic tank with solar‐heated water for efficient wastewater treatment proposed by Thailand’s Thammasat University, a novel financial evaluation called “Life Cycle Cost” for building efficient wastewater management system proposed by Japan, and legal and technological solutions for domestic wastewater in Ha Noi, Viet Nam.

Open defecation, toilet sanitation and water safety
As part of its own effort to address water sanitation problems, consumer goods manufacturer Unilever Philippines, through its leading germ-kill expert brand Domex, has partnered with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to stop open defecation which threatens drinking water sources and public health in far-flung villages in Masbate and North Cotabato.

Open defecation refers to the practice whereby people go out in fields, bushes, forests, open bodies of water, or other open spaces to defecate as they do not have access to toilets.

To date, there are 157,997 people in Masbate and North Cotabato that have been positively impacted by the improvements in sanitation practices through the partnership of Unilever and UNICEF.

One million clean toilets movement
Domex also leads the movement for 1 Million Clean Toilets which aims to educate a million Filipinos every year on proper toilet hygiene towards fighting diseases caused by unsanitary toilets. This year, the movement has partnered with health institutions and hospitals through the Philippine Public Health Association. These institutions include the Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center, East Avenue Medical Center, and Rizal Medical Center.

The program includes training of hospital housekeeping staff on proper toilet hygiene and distributing educational materials to patients. Unilever also partnered with Maxicare to enable its network of doctors to encourage more than one million people to adopt proper hygiene practices.

Unilever’s efforts on toilet sanitation are in line with their long-term commitment to the global Unilever Sustainable Living Plan which aims to improve the health and well-being of two billion people worldwide by 2020.

Ensuring access to water and sanitation among new UN goals
During the 70th anniversary of the United Nations in New York, UN member states adopted a 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development highlighting 17 global sustainable development goals that can end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity. One of the goals includes ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

The global agenda states that poor water quality and inadequate sanitation negatively impact food security, livelihood choices and educational opportunities for poor families across the world; and at least 1.8 billion people globally use a source of drinking water that is contaminated with fecal matter.

By 2030, the new UN sustainable development goal targets to achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all, and achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all as well as end open defecation.

Protect your Lives with Pureit Excella

Whenever I visit my parent’s house, the first thing that always catches my eye is their humongous and primitive looking water purifier with a bunch of stones the size of my fist that are supposed to filter water. ,

It’s actually the second water purifier they bought upon the “suggestion” of my father’s physician, saying you can never be too sure about the quality of the water being sold at those water purifying stations.

It also scared me a bit because when I saw it a couple of months back, it actually looks like there’s already a pond (complete with living organisms) inside as some of the grey stones already turned brown, which is perhaps an indication that it’s time to replace them after giving them clean water for the past five years.

Now they have no choice but to buy from those stations as getting a new purifier can be quite expensive and they couldn’t find an authorized service center to get replacement parts.

Since then I’ve been on the lookout for a new water purifier that can easily be maintained by my senior-aged parents and doesn’t look as intimidating as their older ones.

Fortunately, I got invited to the launch of Unilever’s Pureit Excella, a safe and easier way to purify water, without the menacing look of older purifier models.

Unilever’s Pureit is actually is the largest selling brand of in-home water purifiers in the world, and after years of just reading about it, the brand is finally available in the Philippines!

Safe drinking water: a global concern

Despite the advancements in technology, it’s a sad fact that in developing countries, over 884 million people, including 16 million Filipinos, have no access to clean and safe drinking water, what’s even scarier is that around 80 percent of diseases are water borne.

In 2010, the United Nations declared that “access to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation is a human right essential to the full enjoyment of life” and one of the Millennium Development Goals is to halve, by 2015, the proportion of population without sustainable access to safe drinking water—but that is much easier said than done.

Accepting that global challenge, Unilever’s technical experts across global research centers in the United Kingdom and India worked with technology partners, government bodies, and scientific and public health institutions to develop Pureit - an effective and affordable solution that provides access to safe, clean drinking water.

Today, Pureit helps protect more than 45 million lives, and is the world’s largest selling in-home water purifier brand, creating a global footprint across 13 countries including India, Brazil, Mexico, China, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri-Lanka, Nigeria and Kenya.

In the Philippines, the Department of Health revealed that waterborne diseases remain a severe public health concern with about 4,200 deaths and 770,000 cases of illness each year from water borne diseases since only one in every five households in 24 provinces gets water from unsafe and questionable sources.

This explains why most Filipino households, including my family, do not trust tap water for drinking, forcing us to rely on those expensive drinking water from water refilling stations, which we don’t even know where they are getting as well. Roughly 20% of urban households boil water taken from the tap, which is however an even more expensive and riskier practice.

“Central to Unilever’s mission to make sustainable living common place all over the world, we are launching Pureit to provide Filipino families with access to guaranteed clean and safe drinking water, as certified by both international and local health institutions like the Department of Health and the Philippine Public Health Association,” said Brian Duruin, Pureit brand manager.

How does Pureit work?

Pureit Excella converts potentially dangerous tap water into drinking water—that includes rain water, water from deep wells as well as tap water--by purifying water twice, giving users complete germ protection.

The first level of purification consists of three simple yet valuable layers of protection where water initially passes through the Germkill Processor that disinfects the water of almost all bacteria, viruses and germs. Next, it passes through the Advanced Microfiber Mesh that filters out precipitates such as visible and invisible dust and dirt particles, as well as metallic impurities. Lastly, the Carbon Polisher removes pesticides, chlorine, and odor from the water, before it goes to the second level of purification.

The second level purification is performed by the Micro-charged Membrane, which further purifies the water by removing any remaining parasites or bacteria—assuring families of protection against diseases. The end product is clear, fresh, and natural-tasting water that’s free from harmful agents.

As a tabletop device, using Pureit Excella also eliminates the hassle of buying expensive water from water refilling stations and the associated risk of contamination through unclean containers or storage rooms.

But perhaps the most impressive part of Excella is that it is actually the only non-electric water purifier that meets the microbiological safety norms criteria of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the regulatory body with the most stringent standards for safe drinking water all over the world.

Oh and did I mention that it only costs less than the price of other bulkier water purifiers out there? Purchasing a Germkill Kit (which is only the part you need to replace) costs just P1,000 and is already good for P1,500 liters of water.

I’ve been using a Pureit Excella for a few weeks and I could say I’ve never appreciated the simplicity of just pouring tap water into my Excella, instead of having to call the nearest refilling station, waiting for half an hour, and lifting that heavy 5 gallon container just to enjoy a glass of water.

Just a quick note though, don’t be alarmed by the faint plastic-like or chlorine-like smell of the water the first few times you use it as the scent goes away after a few water cycles. Just do the initial water cycle five times before using the Excella.

The Unilever PureIt Excella costs P5,000 and now available at Abenson. For more information about Unilever PureIt, log on to http://www.pureitwater.com/PH/.
