Electron College of Technical Education; Quality education, Affordable tuition

Mrs Lea Solis and Dominic Solis

For any parent, there is perhaps no prouder moment than to see their child on stage proudly holding up their diploma, armed with the knowledge and skills and ready to face reality.

As they say, the best thing a parent can give their child is the the gift of education. Education opens more doors of opportunities to help them pursue their dreams, land a good job and live a better life.

But the gift of education doesn't come cheap, especially here in the Philippines. It can cost hundreds of thousands of pesos not to mention all the sweat, tears and sacrifices that go along with it.

Dr. Dominador Solis witnessed all the hardships of his parents while studying at the University of the East Recto, and dreamt of putting up a school that could give quality yet affordable education.

He would realize that dream in 2002, after putting up the first Electron College of Technical Education formerly Electron Technical Vocational Training Center,  Main campus located at 664 Electron Bldg. Quirino Highway, Bagbag, Novaliches QC. His dream would flourish and now Electron has 10 branches located in Valenzuela, Marilao, Munoz, Pasig, Espana, Pasay, Paranaque, Camarin Caloocan and Las Pinas.

All their courses are TESDA-based and TESDA-registered.  Electron Technical Vocational Training Centeras also has a TESDA Accredited Assessment Center in Driving NC11, Motorcycle Servicing, Bookkeeping NCIII, and Computer Servicing NCII at Valenzuela Branch. They are the first and only TESDA Accredited DRIVING NCII in Training and Assessment.

"Our mission is to equip our STUDENTS with Special Skills and Rigid Training that will bring out their potential, showcase their abilities and talents and assist them in gaining their confidence,"  Solis said in a recent meetup with bloggers.

Quality and Comprehensive learning in short period of time, he explained would mean less expenses to parents and help students find jobs much sooner.

Electron has quickly built a credible reputation as the leading technical vocational school in the country that offers wide variety of courses that are truly in-demand here in the Philippines as well as abroad.

Besides being a TESDA accredited school, Electron Technical Vocational Training Center is proud of its competent faculty and fully airconditioned rooms. For just P500 deposit one can already enrol in the school.

The 500 Check Voucher

Electron likewise offers ladderized courses, tutorial study and has no age restrictions to anyone who wants to study. There is even no entrance exam.

Four categories are maintained in the school programs: Semestral, Short Courses, Tutorial and Live In/live out Seminars these courses are based on modular and Hands-on-training.

The school also offers courses in the hard trades and computer literacy such as Technology, Auto Technology, Electronics Technology, Tourism-Hospitality and Restaurant Services, Electricity and Welding Technology and Wellness and Fashion Technology.

To help them promote the school, Electron has partnered with UN'TV broadcasting in their MANIBELA ACADEMY project wherein they train scholars to become responsible and qualified drivers on the road. The school was also featured in GMA station for giving free technical services and tips in Electronics Appliances repair and maintenance.

"In the years to come, we believe that SPECIALLY SKILLED individuals will be recognized as potential and highly qualified worker therefore be offered with more employment opportunities as well as high paid salaries in exchange for their quality job and great expertise in their chosen career, and it can start here at Electron," Solis quipped.

“HORRIBLE BOSSES 2” RECONSIDER THEIR CAREER PATHS

THE HAPLESS HEROES ARE BACK IN “HORRIBLE BOSSES 2”

The stars of Horrible Bosses are now back to tickle your funny bones again. Nick, Dale and Kurt once again stars in the Horrible Bosses 2 as the same hilarious guys that we used to love.

In 2011, audiences around the world embraced Nick, Dale and Kurt, the hapless heroes of “Horrible Bosses,” who struggled under the yoke of supervisors so monstrous and out-of-control that they felt their only recourse was to bump them off. Fortunately, they were spectacularly unsuccessful, bungling the job at every turn in an escalating cycle of panic and insanely bad decisions that propelled the film to worldwide box office heights — and suggested that not everyone is cut out for homicide, however justifiable. Also, that these three might want to reconsider their career paths.

In New Line Cinema's sequel “Horrible Bosses 2,’” Nick, Dale and Kurt do exactly that, rallying with an original invention and another run at the American dream.

“They develop a product they think they can make, market and sell,” says Jason Bateman. “They put everything they have into it, and decide to bet on themselves, which is just not a good idea with these guys. It doesn’t take very long for things to go wrong.”

The new venture takes the three into uncharted territory and up against formidable new foes, but with the same unbeatable chemistry, crazy energy and go-for-broke enthusiasm that Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis first brought to their leading roles.

Director Sean Anders was specific about what he wanted the sequel to offer, saying, “Our driving thought was that it had to be its own story, not just three new bosses and three different ways to kill them. What we wanted was these guys, who are so funny and who we all love, in a whole new caper that takes them to desperate places they couldn’t imagine, and the desperate solutions they come up with.”

“Like most people, what I loved about the first movie was not only the concept but the phenomenal comic interplay,” says producer Chris Bender. “It made me want to see what these guys were going to do next. They’re such great characters that we wanted to put them into another impossible situation, turn them loose and see what happens.”

This time, it’s their nascent dreams of entrepreneurship that are crushed when an unscrupulous investor steals their invention and every penny they have. Or, considering the massive loan they’re still on the hook for, every penny they will ever have.

Perhaps the most striking thing about seeing Nick, Dale and Kurt together again, apart from their enduring optimism and unfailing support for one another, is that they haven’t gained much wisdom from their experiences, or evaluated their problem-solving skills.

Anders jokingly points out, “What’s tough about a lot of sequels is that the first story takes the characters through some kind of transformation, where they begin as one kind of person and then change into a better, more enlightened person at the end. But ‘Horrible Bosses’ wasn’t meant to be super heartwarming; it wasn’t that kind of party. So we had the leeway to jump right in and keep it funny and crazy and not get wrapped up in these guys realizing great life lessons. In fact, I think it’s safe to say that, at the end of the second movie, they still haven’t learned anything.”

Opening across the Philippines on Nov. 26, “Horrible Bosses 2” is a New Line Cinema Presentation distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Smart inks deal to install hotspots in UP campuses nationwide

'Iskolars ng Bayan' to access online resources for free

Free connectivity fosters collaborative learning. Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) and the University of the Philippines have recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement that will further advance the national university’s bid to become globally competitive. Under the agreement that was signed by UP president Alfredo E. Pascual (right) and Smart chief wireless advisor Orlando B. Vea (left), Smart will provide free wireless connectivity to the UP community to promote digital inclusion.

Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), the leader in mobile telecommunications, has formalized its commitment to provide free connectivity and access points to all the constituent universities of the University of the Philippines System across the country.

A Memorandum of Agreement covering the provision of free wireless connectivity to the UP System was recently signed between UP led by its president Alfredo E. Pascual, and Smart led by its chief wireless advisor Orlando B. Vea at the UP Executive House in Diliman, Quezon City.

“This fosters more collaborative learning within the UP community, and allows every Isko and Iska to access online learning resources for free,” said Vea.  “For us at Smart, this is part of our vision for digital inclusion, of making the Internet more accessible so that more Filipinos get to enjoy its benefits.”

For his part, UP president Pascual said, “This is more than just a simple triumph of technology.  The hotspots will be a catalyst in unifying the seven constituent universities and one constituent college of the UP System and will signal the start of greater collaboration between UP and Smart in bringing Philippine education into the 21st century.”

Under the agreement, websites whitelisted by Smart and UP can be accessed for free over WiFi inside UP campuses. Meanwhile, sites that are not whitelisted can still be accessed for free for 30 minutes per day. Data usage beyond that period will be charged the usual rates.

Smart will be installing 120 hotspots initially in various UP campuses.  It will also put up eight new base stations to add to the six that are already inside UP.

This move is in support of the integrated computerization of the University under the eUP project, a key initiative under UP’s Strategic Plan which aims to make the country’s one and only national university more competitive in the region and in the world.

“The eUP project is envisioned to seamlessly integrate UP’s information and communications infrastructure system-wide, enhance service delivery, and achieve operational excellence,” said Pascual.

The initiative of providing Internet connectivity to the UP community complements the computerization project, which is being supported by Smart’s sister-firm, ePLDT, which won the competitive bidding for the core programs needed for the project. ePLDT will use a package of Oracle software to run the University’s information management systems. Several software modules of the system are also being developed internally by UP.

UP officials said the computerization project will provide an integrated, interconnected, harmonized, and interoperable ICT network within and across all the constituent universities of UP.

“We have to start somewhere, right now — as they say in UP — kung hindi tayo, sino; kung di ngayon, kailan?  This MOA signing is a good way to help make the eUP project a reality. We’re in this together,” said Vea, who is a UP alumnus.

Smart has committed to be a partner not just by providing wireless infrastructure, but also by reinforcing education and development programs that benefit the students and the nation. Its continuous support to students and universities is demonstrated in the Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP), its partnership with the UP Open University (UPOU). Smart and UPOU are jointly offering courses on Android Mobile Applications Development, and Technopreneurship, via the massive online open course (MOOC) model.

Under its Smart Schools Program, Smart has instituted various customized programs that cater to the specific needs of learning communities from primary up to the tertiary level in a bid to help enhance Philippine education using mobile and web technologies.

Anne Hathaway reunites with Director Nolan for "Interstellar"

Anne Hathaway (“The Dark Knight Rises,” “Les Miserables”) reunites with director Christopher Nolan in Warner Bros. Pictures' futuristic thriller “Interstellar.”

In the film, with our time on Earth coming to an end, a team of explorers undertakes the most important mission in human history: traveling beyond this galaxy to discover whether mankind has a future among the stars.

Hathaway is mindful of Nolan’s focus on the human stakes in even the most heroic endeavor. “From the beginning of time, the reach to expand our world or move our civilization forward has always involved great sacrifice by a handful of individuals, who put the greater good over any risk to themselves. This film really celebrates those who are brave enough to do that.”

“I got so emotional reading it,” continues Hathaway who plays biologist Amelia Brand, part of the team of astronauts that also includes Matthew McConaughey as Cooper, Wes Bentley as Doyle and David Gyasi as Romilly.

“The family dynamics for all the characters, the stakes for all the characters, are enormous,” Hathaway continues. “I think just about everybody has to make some kind of major sacrifice in order to go on this journey. I think this film really celebrates those that are brave enough to do that. I’m so floored by humanity’s capacity to put others before ourselves.”

“Anne is an extraordinary talent who can really lose herself in a character,” Nolan observes. “She has cerebral qualities and an interest in science, so it was natural to see her as Brand, a character who views the world through a scientific lens. But, at the same time, Anne’s underlying warmth and the layered performance she brought to the role reveal this character to be a whole person beyond just being a scientist.”

Hathaway admits that she was “blown away” by the film’s evocation of space, but was primarily drawn in by the emotional journey the characters take. “The concepts behind this film can keep you awake at night, but the story is also a beautiful meditation on love,” she says. “If you look at the human race from an evolutionary standpoint, you have to factor in love as a key part of the equation, and how this idea is woven into Brand’s experience of this mission felt very moving and truthful to me. I think it’s a brave and extraordinary thing that Chris has done in weaving the persistence of love into the DNA of this big adventure in space.”

Anne Hathaway most recently reprised the voice of Jewel, an independent, high-flying blue macaw in Carlos Saldanha’s animated film “Rio 2,” which also features voices from Jamie Foxx and Jesse Eisenberg.

In 2012, she starred as “Fantine” in Tom Hooper’s screen adaptation of musical phenomenon “Les Misérables,” opposite Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Eddie Redmayne and Amanda Seyfried. Hathaway’s performance garnered Oscar, Golden Globe, SAG, and BAFTA awards for lead actress. Earlier that year, Hathaway starred as the ultimate femme fatale “Catwoman” alongside Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” The film was Nolan’s third and final chapter in the franchise and was both a critical triumph and a smash box office hit.

In 2008, Hathaway starred in Jonathan Demme’s critically acclaimed “Rachel Getting Married,” for which she was nominated for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, an Independent Spirit Award, and a SAG Award in the “Best Actress” category. The National Board of Review, the Chicago Film Critics Association, and the Broadcast Film Critics Association all named Hathaway “Best Actress” for her performance in the film.

Opening across the Philippines on Nov. 6, “Interstellar” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. “Interstellar” is available in four formats: IMAX 70mm Film (at IMAX SM Mall of Asia), 35mm Film (at Glorietta 4, Sta. Lucia East and Trinoma), IMAX Digital (at SM Aura Premiere, SM Cebu, SM Clark, SM Lanang, SM Megamall, SM North EDSA and SM Southmall) and Digital 2D (most theatres nationwide).

Starmobile Products, now made accessible at 7-Eleven Stores

Gone are the days where only snacks, ice cream in tubs/cones and toiletries are the ones you can find at a convenience store. Now, Philippine smart devices brand Starmobile makes available its products at selected 7-Eleven convenience stores.

Included in the initial rollout are the Rotonda (Pasig City),  One San Miguel, Avenue (Mandaluyong), National University, Far Eastern University, University of the East, and University of Santo Tomas  branches.

“Mobile devices have become a commodity and Filipinos need a convenient place where they can purchase them,” said Starmobile President Ulysees Lao.

“No need to commute or pay for parking fees—simply walk to the nearest participating 7-Eleven branch and go home with an awesome gadget,” he added.

A first in the Philippines, Starmobile products are currently available over-the-counter in select 7-Eleven branches in Metro Manila.

Over 60 more stores nationwide will follow suit before the year ends.

“We hope that having our products available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week will prove useful especially during times of emergency,” said Lao.

“Whether you need a spare phone or you lost your primary unit due to flood, you no longer need to go to a mall just to keep connected,” he ended.

Visit Triple O's second store at SM Aura Level 4, Food on Four

That remarkable taste and juiciness of the 100% Canadian burger from their first store launched at SM Megamall from months ago remains the same and keeps getting better, I should say, this time around at their second store  Triple Os SM Aura.   It was again a love at second bite for their meaty patty. The bun, pickles, the 100% Canadian patty are all there to give  burger lovers what they are looking for in a gourmet meat patty sandwich.

Bacon Cheddar (php 300 burger only,    php 380 combo)
The juiciest burger I have laid my eyes upon on their first store launched at the SM Megamall is the mouth-watering Bacon Cheddar. It has the tastiest dripping cheddar topped on a 100% Canadian patty with onions, mayo and bacon for that exciting burger experience. Best eaten fresh and hot off the grill with their milkshakes.

I ordered another bestseller at SM Aura second store launched last October 28. I asked for  the Monty Mushroom because some of the burger aficionados told me to try this one since I love my burger with mushrooms in it.

Monty Mushroom (php 310 burger,  php 390 combo)
Yes, a burger is better with mushrooms, it is made to taste perfect in my opinion.  I guess it accentuates the fat of the patty same with the cheese, tomatoes and veggies inside the Monty Mushroom. Theyre like one happy family for me. This again would make for a one hearty meal. It is meant for sharing but if you have a big appetite, this alone would satisfy your craving.

Fish and chips ala carte Php 300.00, combo Php 335.00, Milkshakes small Php 150, Regular Php 200.

Monty Mushroom, Fish and chips and Milkshakes

We ordered for their fish and chips too, the soft, hot and white fish meat is a "cod" fish. The chips and fish is better with mayo and their sauce.  I could finish this in one seating with a Strawberry milkshake to booth. What I love about their strawberry milkshake is that, its not that sweet, it has the creamiest and tastiest premium ice cream mix with strawberries.

Pinky Yee
"In Manila, we have become known as the place that serves the best milkshakes in town," explained SweetSpot Philippines President Pinky Yee who was mainly responsible for bringing the brand to the Philippines. "Our hand-scooped Triple O's milkshakes have developed quite a loyal following," she further noted.

“Triple O”  came from the shorthand language of the drive-in service attendants, otherwise known as "carhops". When guests at the drive-in chose from mayonnaise and relish, their order slips were printed with X's and O's. Three O's on the slip meant plenty of everything, and that's exactly what Triple O's by White spot of Canada serves on their menu.

Triple O's SM Aura counter

Triple O's come up with their "Daily Specials" promo wherein you have to get a free sundae, pasta, nespresso coffee or a one 3 piece order of dippin chicken. Or spotsize your combo, add Php 40.00 and substitute your softdrinks to a small milkshake and add Php 100.

You can now visit Triple Os at SM Aura Level 4, Food on Four, and SM Megamall. For more info visit facebook.com/triplesosph.

“1ST KO SI 3RD” TO OPEN EXCLUSIVELY AT AYALA MALLS CINEMAS STARTING NOVEMBER 12

Before flying off at this year’s Official Selection to Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF), the Nova Villa-Freddie Webb onscreen reunion, “1st Ko si 3rd” will open exclusive at Ayala Malls Cinemas nationwide starting November 12.

Written and directed by Real Florido and included in the New Breed Category of this year’s Cinemalaya Indpendent Film Festival (Year 10), “1st Ko si 3rd” introduces the audience to a 65-year old woman, Cory (Villa) married to Alejandro (Dante Rivero) who gets reunited with her 1st love, Third (Webb) and finally the supposed 1st date happens five decades after they got separated.

“1st Ko si 3rd” also bagged this year’s Cinemalaya Best Actor Award (Dante Rivero). Director Florido muses on the movie’s theme on love and life especially among Filipinos who face the twilight years of their lives, “When we hear about first love, the first things that we imagine are the fondest memories of a person's young love. We instantaneously recreate this image of how they look like back in the days. This time, I want to flip the lenses. I want to show the other side –the point of view of the one who is looking back at a distant memory and at the same time be able to narrate a story of love and life through the eyes of ageing people.  This film aims to do just that. Cory’s story is more than just about her 1st love. It is also about a person’s apprehensions and fears in the life that is waiting during retirement—a reflection of the life of most Filipino retirees.”

Nova Villa, Dante Rivero and Freddie Webb ,  compleat actors round up an amazing endearing cast in “1st Ko si 3rd.”  The movie pans on the first day of her retirement, 65-year-old Cory busies herself by cleaning her house until it was immaculate and spotless. Still, something does not feel right. She is not used to the silence and to spending every waking hour with just her husband, Alejandro. She wonders if this is all she is to do and can expect for the rest of her life, after spending a good deal of it working so hard.

Alejandro notices the changes in Cory. Their fights seem to be a side-effect of Cory’s retirement. Now that she is no longer working, she feels useless as a person and worthless as a woman.

Then unexpectedly, Cory bumps into Third, her first love. Third was the first man who made her fall in love deeply. He was her teenage dream. She cannot forget Third because their first date never happened.

Try as she might, Cory is almost bursting with happiness seeing Third again. Her life suddenly becomes more colorful and exciting as she realizes she can spend her days doing things she never had time for before –learning to chat in the Internet, do idle talks with newfound friends, pamper herself at the salon and do aerobics. Life is definitely looking brighter, especially when Third asks her out. Finally, their first date is about to happen.

Cory brings with her a handful of love letters she never gave to Third, kept all through the years they were apart. She is now ready to give them to her first love. On the day of their first date, Cory will realize what is lacking with her relationship with Alejandro as she discovers if “first love never (really) dies”.

Real Florido grew up in Caloocan City, a densely populated area in Manila, which inspired him to do his 1st short film “Like A Broken Phonograph”—an official selection to the 4th Chicago Fil-Am Film Festival and film in competition in the 9th Cinemanila International Film Festival.

While finishing bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication as a full scholar in the University of the City of Manila, he managed to get a job or two in different production outfits as assistant and project manager. Shortly after college, he got an assistant director job for ICU BED #7, a film that competed in the 1st Cinemalaya Film Fest. He later worked full time as writer and content producer for GMA 7, a leading broadcasting channel in the country.  He was able to finish cinematography class at Mowelfund Film Institute and made another short film, “Mr. Perfect” that won 3rd place in the 180 Microcinema Film Festival and one of the Supreme Films in the Shoot4Life Filmmarathon Competition in Budapest, Hungary.

Exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas nationwide on November 12, log on to www.sureseats.com for advance ticket online purchase and schedule of “1st Ko si 3rd.”

Human Nature partners with GET for public transportation COMET

Human Nature together with Global Electric Transportation (GET), launches COMET (City Optimized Managed Electric Transport) ,  the  zero emission and zero belching public transportation with 20 seats capacity is powered by lithium ion batteries. The launch was attended by Human Nature Vice President Dylan Wilk,  Quezon City Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte, GET Philippines President, Freddie Tinga and Gawad Kalinga founder Tony Meloto last October 29, 2014 at the  Human Nature Head office, Commonwealth, QC.

QC Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte

In the past 6 years, Human Nature has tried to base every business decision on its Pro-Philippines, Pro-poor and Pro-environment promise. The company goes to great lengths to uphold these guiding principles – from its meticulous product development process, its development of farming communities in its supply chain, to fostering a corporate mindset that puts the needs of the poor at the top of its agenda.

The COMET is light years ahead of other mass transport vehicles. The COMET’s designated stops and terminals also make it safer for riders – gone are the days of running after jeepneys and getting rides in the middle of lanes. COMET riders will enjoy an added layer of security and ease – each unit comes equipped with a CCTV Camera, GPS and uses a cashless “Tap In, Tap Out” system.

The GET card

The partnership signifies another first for Human Nature: the roll out of “Goodness Riding”, its first transport ad campaign.

Human Nature has successfully avoided using ingredients which are harmful to humans or to the environment in its products. Most beauty brands feel it is too difficult to keep such a pledge and so do not even try. For Human Nature, it has certainly made life much more difficult, but their talented team of Filipino scientists have succeeded, winning awards from venerable institutions such as the World Economic Forum and recently being invited to share their social enterprise model at the World Entrepreneurship Forum in Lyon and World Forum in Lille, France. For a Filipino brand to be honored in France, a country more known for beauty products than any other country around the world; is truly a great distinction. Human Nature has proven that “Made in the Philippines” can mean world-class.

Dylan Wilk, Vice President of Human Nature says, “Human Nature was born because we believe that the Philippines can not only catch up, but can lead the world in many fields one day, even in science and technology. The COMET has the potential to transform Manila’s roads from noisy, polluted thoroughfares into peaceful, sleek 21st century streets of the future. They are a natural match for us. The COMET brings our pro-Philippines, pro-poor and pro-environment vision closer in every way, since even the drivers have guaranteed income and can earn far more than in a regular jeepney with COMET.”

Dylan Wilk and son

GandangKalikasan Inc. (GKI), the social enterprise behind the Human Nature brand, believes that technology should serve society’s most vulnerable and it teamed up with GET Philippines because it is a green company that puts the needs of the poor at the heart of their business.“We are very excited with this partnership with Human Nature because we share the same business approach: the triple bottom line -- People and Planet while maintaining enough Profit to ensure that the business continues to deliver good value to the community,” adds Freddie Tinga, President of GET Philippines.

Tony Meloto, founder of GawadKalinga (GK) added, “If we want inclusive growth, we need to build the walangiwananeconomy where we leave no one behind,” he shares. Fresh from his stint at the World Forum Lille where he joined Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, Meloto believes companies like GET Philippines and Human Nature are transforming the Philippines, making it a hub for social entrepreneurship.“Solidarity in creating inclusive wealth is key to sustainable peace and prosperity.”

Gawad Kalinga's Tony Meloto

While GET Philippines is set on replacing 35,000 public utility jeepneys with the COMET within 5 to 7 years; it makes clear that it is not out to displace jeepney drivers and operators. GET has joined hands with jeepney associations and a transport group to meet their goal. Comet drivers will receive a monthly salary, health care, and social security. If medium is indeed message, then there is no better vehicle for Human Nature’s messages than the COMET.
