THE SNOWMAN” will be shown EXCLUSIVELY AT AYALA MALLS CINEMAS on NOV 22

Based on Jo Nesbo's global bestseller, Universal Pictures’ terrifying thriller The Snowman, starring Michael Fassbender and Rebecca Ferguson, will be shown exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas (Trinoma, Glorietta 4, Market! Market! and Fairview Terraces) starting November 22.

Also starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Chloe Sevigny, Val Kilmer and Academy Award® winner J.K. Simmons, The Snowman is directed by Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).

In the film, a sociopath who calls himself “The Snowman Killer” has targeted the one person for whom he wants to show off his methodical, unthinkable skills: the lead investigator of an elite crime squad. With cunningly simplistic baits such as “Mr. Policeman, I gave you all the clues…” he begs to have a worthy opponent to play his sick game.

For Detective Harry Hole (Fassbender), the murder of a young woman on the first snow of the winter feels like anything but a routine homicide case in his district. From the start of the investigation, The Snowman has personally targeted him with taunts—ones that continue to accompany each new vicious murder.

Fearing an elusive serial killer long-thought dead may be active again, the detective enlists brilliant recruit Katrine Bratt (Ferguson), to help him connect decades-old cold cases to the brutal new ones. Succeed, and they will lure out the psychopath that’s been watching them from the shadows for who knows how long. Fail, and an unthinkable evil will strike once again during the very next snowfall.

The Snowman, the seventh book in Jo Nesbø’s best-selling Harry Hole series, has enthralled global audiences since it was first published in 2007. The novel took the beleaguered detective and his creator to an entirely new level and readership, and it topped The New York Times Best-Seller list in U.S.—as well as marked Nesbø’s first No.1 in the U.K. charts and firmly establishing his place as one of the elite international crime writers.

Director Tomas Alfredson discusses that his approach to filmmaking is to guide the audience through his work, but never decide what each individual should experience. This commitment to his craft leads the filmmaker to be quite selective in the stories he chooses to tell. Alfredson admits he found Nesbø’s protagonist to be riveting.

When I read a story, I try to find an animal for each character. Is he or she a rabbit, wolf, dog or a cat? Not visually, but the soul of a certain animal. To me, Harry is an owl; he is someone people don’t see, but who sees everyone else. He’s very smart and silent; he knows when to speak and when to interact. But he also feels alienated with the rest of the world. His private life has fallen into pieces, and the only thing that works is his intuitive talent as an investigator.”

“The Snowman does have that other element that previous books don’t have, and that is the horror element,” adds Nesbø. “The title ‘The Snowman’ conveys a certain image, as does the idea of an innocent thing that is taken out of context and put in a new context; the more cozy and familiar it is, the scarier it becomes.”

Discussing handing over the reins of a cherished property to another creative team, the author reflects: “They chose a director who is a storyteller in his own right and who isn’t there just to give a version of the book, but who wanted to use the book as input for his story. As a storyteller myself, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Tomas’ understanding and my trusting him made it easy for me to say ‘Take these pages that are written and use them as a helpful input for a story that you want to tell.”

The Snowman is distributed in the Philippines by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.

DINA DELA PAZ-STALDER, 100 MOST INFLUENTIAL FILIPINA IN THE WORLD.

Dina Dela Paz-Stalder, a skincare expert, was awarded with this prestigious recognition, specifically in the Founder and Pioneer Category (Global FWN100 Award) in Toronto, Canada on October 27, 2017, by Filipino Women’s Network.

She was selected from an outstanding field of nominees from around the world.
The Global FWN100 Award™ recognizes 100 Filipino women who are changing the face of leadership in the global workplace.  It distinguishes them for their outstanding work in their respective fields, and further recognizes them for their achievement and contributions to society.  Dina Dela Paz-Stalder’s award and global recognition is another evidence of Filipino pride as she proves that Filipinos are also global leaders in terms of skincare innovations and extraordinary leadership.

From left to right: Hon Thelma Boac, Global FWN100 Awards Trustee; Susie Quesada, FWN President; Maria Nieves Santos-Greaves, FWN Board Secretary; President & CEO of Stalder Group of Companies Dina Dela Paz-Stalder, the FWN 100 Most Influential Filipina Awardee for Founder and Pioneer Category; Hon. Marilyn Mondejar, FWN Founder and CEO; Maria Beebe, Ph.D, FWN Board Chair

Started from just a small steel pot for skincare formulations,  she now owns and leads the Stalder Group of Companies which includes  Stalder Laboratories Incorporation (a cGMP-certified, Halal-certified and FDA-approved manufacturing plant located in San Pablo, Laguna),  the BCP Dermatological Corporation (the marketing arm),  and the Diana Stalder Face, Body, Skincare Center (formerly known as Dermaline Facial Center).

Aside from being an entrepreneur, Dela Paz-Stalder is a strong advocate for causes such as the environment and community development.
For community development, it would have been easier to build a factory in an industrial zone, but as a farmer’s daughter, the grit and determination that served her well in business is something she applies equally to her advocacies.  So she opted instead to empower her town mates, and give back to her hometown. As far as environment is concerned, at all levels of production, she is adamant about waste segregation and sludge/water recycling. Working with the Mother Earth foundation, the community has also produced malunggay tea, mushrooms, and green charcoal. With this, Dela Paz-Stalder was recognized with a blue ribbon award from the Laguna Lake Development Authority, an honor bestowed upon environmentally responsible businesses.

"I feel overwhelmed with this recognition, as I did not expect to be given this prestigious award.. Being one of the Most Influential Filipina Woman in the World Award: Founder & Pioneer gives me the opportunity to show my capability as a Filipino and as a woman in inspiring business entrepreneurs. Now, I am more motivated to encourage more people with my story - from my humble beginnings to the dazzling height of success. May we all continue to work together, nurture and empower this unique group, FWN," said Dela Paz-Stalder.

Landscape photographer Leslie Dizon features mystical Iceland in ‘Ember and Ice’ exhibit

Four years after her sold-out solo exhibit in 2013, landscape photographer, Leslie Dizon, recently launched her latest creations ‘Ember and Ice,’ at the Dizon Corporate Center in 116 Esteban Abada St. Varsity Hills Subdivision, Loyola Heights, QC.

The Iceland exhibition, which will run until November 10, parallels Dizon’s inner journey of triumph over hesitation and coasting along safe shores.

Being a landscape photographer for 8 years now, Dizon’s constant longing for aesthetic stimulus helped hone her craft while shooting around picturesque locations in various parts of the Philippines.

‘This year I felt it was time to get out of my comfort zone and start participating in photo tours outside the Philippines. I have always wanted to visit Iceland since I came across the Blue Lagoon Hot Springs in a fashion spread back in college,’ quipped Dizon.

She adds, ‘It caught my fascination and adventurous spirit. At the same time, a friend of mine introduced me to the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. Before the digital age, hardly anyone knew about it except maybe those who admired its perfect spirals in Van Gogh’s Starry Night.’

Coincidentally, around the time that Dizon had upgraded to her dream camera, she was invited to join the Iceland photography tour. But already on a financial downturn with the investment she made, her partner gladly pitched and a mentor encouraged her to pursue. Everything simply aligned.

‘Ember and Ice’ is all about keeping one’s earnest desires burning and making things happen. It is taking a leap of faith, saying yes to opportunity and allowing immense fulfillment to take place. Having experienced the merging of fine art and the mystical world of Iceland, Dizon is sure to set a renewed excitement in the beauty and strength of Mother Nature, and a fiery inspiration to follow one’s dreams.

Young filmmakers to win Blackmagic camera and film course in L.A. at Viddsee Juree Awards

Fresh, innovative and inspiring stories have been chosen to vie for top honors at the Viddsee Juree Philippines, a festival of short films that aim to celebrate and support filmmaker communities in Asia.

Alembrg Ang Awards Director Viddsee Jury Philippines.

The nominated films are by upcoming talents from different schools such as the University of the Philippines, Far Eastern University, Mint, College of St Benilde, Letran, and International Academy of Film and Television. Their works are about families, personal struggles and the realities in rural communities— a young boy’s dream of becoming a mermaid, two brothers dealing with the loss of their parents shot entirely on a drone, a father battling grief and injustice after his son’s death, and more moving stories.

Viddsee’s head of content Nikki Loke comments: “Themes from the top ten films highlight local cultures and nuances, while others reflect universal themes of mental health and identity, for example. Overall, I was very impressed with all the elements of storytelling like casting, cinematography, script, supporting the authenticity of these stories.”

The winners of the Viddsee Juree Awards will be announced at a ceremony on Saturday, November 25, at the FDCP Cinematheque Centre Manila. Viddsee will also hold a series of workshops, forums and short film screenings at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde on 24 November, and at the Cinematheque from 24 to 26 November. All these are open to the public.

The initiative kicked off three months ago through an online campaign and offline roadshows in Manila, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao where it received encouraging response from the creative community.

Two top entries will be named Gold and Silver winners. They will win production equipment including a cinema camera sponsored by Blackmagic and a five-day Film Immersion Course in Los Angeles sponsored by the Motion Picture Association.

For the nominees, landing on the shortlist is a prize in itself.

“There are some people who have criticised my work, which made me question my ability as a filmmaker. Being part of this competition made me more confident as a person and a filmmaker, and that I have the chance to be recognized by a bigger audience, that I have a shot in this industry, says Tashana Rivera, director of the film “Companion”.

For Christian Candelaria, director of “In His Island,” being selected is also a tribute to those who helped him make his film. He declares, “I’m humbled and deeply proud to have the privilege of collaborating with such amazing and fine group of people who shared the same passion.”

The jury is composed of Loïc Valceschini, festival programmer of Neuchâtel Int' Fantastic Film Fest and Locarno's Semaine de la Critique, Marcus Manh, Vietnamese film producer and founder of YxineFF, and Antoinette Jadaone, Filipino film writer director of blockbuster hits like “That Thing Called Tadhana and “Love You To The Stars and Back.”

Global market players to conduct frontal B2B on November 16-17

Global market players in the tourism sector will meet on November 16-17 at Clark, Asia’s newest darling of tourism, to conduct frontal B2B (business to business) meetings and listen to seminars on how best to use the digital platform to further tourism products and packages for the benefit of stakeholders and clients.

The TBEX Pilipinas 2017, organized by Afro Asian World Events for the Network of Independent Travel and Allied Services Philippines Inc. (NITAS) as beneficiary headed by Robert Lim Joseph, is a two-day event that is exclusively for buyers and sellers in the tourism sector. Thus far, it has an expected attendance of 200 buyers from the Philippines; 20 other travel agencies; 15 corporations and 50 foreign buyers. (TBEX stands for Travel Business Exchange), which began in 2013.

This much-awaited annual event seeks to promote further tourism activity not just for the Philippines but foreign destinations as well and enlighten the players on how to optimize their use of the digital space to promote their businesses as operators of airlines, hotel and restaurants, resorts and hospitality services/products and more.

“We have to realize that people no longer have to physically buy their tickets or make reservations to their destinations through the travel agencies. They can do it now with their smartphones and computers. This is why the global industry players must optimize their use of the digital technology as their markets are getting more technologically mature,” explained Joseph.

The official venue for the event is Midori Hotel and Casino Clark but has also engaged for the billeting of delegates the Park Inn Clark by Radisson; Quest Hotel and Conference Center Clark; Royce Hotel and Casino Clark and Widus Hotel and Casino Clark.

The event is co-organized by the Clark Development Corporation led by its hardworking President and COO, Noel Manankil and he said “ Clark has grown into a leading destination and as such we will promote sustainability and productivity in tourism through TBEX. It is also supported by the Department of Tourism, Tourism Promotions Board Philippines,Tourism Infrastructure Enterprise and Zone Authority, PAL, Informatics, Resorts World Manila and other industry supporters.

On the first day, the sessions will dwell on the road map to digital travel, checkpoints in technology change; combatting price competition from a watchful owl’s eye and where shall I go, online or offline? and winning the booking through digital marketing.

The second day will have only one morning session with theme “makes me feel to work again and again” and will be followed by a timed (12 minutes each) B2B and a networking snack in the afternoon. The event will be capped by a gala party with theme “green angel” at the roof top garden of Midori.

In an endorsement of TBEX Pilipinas 2017 Tourism Secretary Wanda Tulfo- Teo said this activity pursues to be the leading and most productive B2B event organized by the private sector to generate more selling and buying movements within the industry to capture outstanding sales and profit either based on domestic, inbound or international travel.

She endorsed this “worthy tourism promotional and marketing exercise and enjoins all stakeholders and players of the industry to participate.”

Angel Ramos-Bognot, Project Director of TBEX 2017 said this yearly event will further reinforce its commitment to the further development of responsible tourism focusing on regional tourism cooperation and business partnerships for the benefit of all industry players and communities. She added that the flavor  of compassion and respect to the environment as a tangible elemental factor in tourism will benefit from this project through Bantay Kalikasan.

Cloudfone and the Philippine SuperLiga (PSL) forge a new partnership to bring league perks to Cloudfone users and first-in-the-Philippines in-game innovations.

The PSL taps Cloudfone as the league’s first technology sponsor in the 2017 Chooks-to-Go PSL Grand Prix Conference.

The Grand Prix, which officially starts on October 28, will be marked with a grand opening, including the public launch of the tie-up. Karch Kiraly, head coach of the United States women’s volleyball team, will be among the special guests of honor during the opening.

Free admission for Cloudfone users
Cloudfone users can let out their biggest cheers as they root for their favorite players and team as they watch the games live and for free at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Cloudfone devices, including feature phones and smartphones, become free Lower Box passes, and entitle all Cloudfone users to see the games during the Grand Prix Conference for free until the grand finale on December 16 as the best teams of the league go face-to-face for the championship rounds.

“They just have to show their phone units and register at the gate. We will always reserve a special section for all Cloudfone users inside the venue so that they can have the best seats, the best view to watch the games,” says PSL Events Director Dr. Ian Laurel.

Cloudfone users can watch the games live for free!

This perk gives Cloudfone users unparalleled experience of the sport. There’s no need to buy tickets, which are being sold at the venue, at SM Tickets booths at SM malls, and online at smtickets.com.

“All they need to do is come over, watch, and enjoy the best volleyball action that we have--the best players, the best teams in women’s volleyball right now,” says Dr. Laurel.

The PSL games take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan, and at different provinces in Luzon and Visayas. All games are aired live on ESPN5 at 4:00 to 8:00 PM, with replays of select matches on the next day.

“As the only professional volleyball league here, PSL believes in elevating the quality of the sport while making it more accessible for Filipinos from all regions to enjoy the games. Cloudfone is aligned with the same mission of bringing global standards in our products and making these available to all Filipinos. Both Cloudfone and PSL advocate for the same thing, to bring quality within reach of our customers and audiences,” explains Ray Caguin, Cloudfone Group Brand Manager.

Cloudfone has already established itself as a brand that provides more value beyond what the usual phones offer. “In all our partnerships, we ensure that we give customers an access to lifestyle wants and wishes. And we are always happy to get those values from our partnerships and give them to our customers. Now, with the PSL agreement, Cloudfone gives access to exciting and world-class quality volleyball games that Cloudfone users can enjoy for one full conference. Owning one of our feature phones, the Cloudfone Lite premier, which only retails at P499 already gives you unlimited access for the entire conference,” Caguin adds.

The league’s schedule is available on the PSL website philippinesuperliga.com.

New sports technology
The partnership could not have come at a better time. Aside from providing benefits to sports fans through free games for Cloudfone users, this new alliance introduces the tablet system to Philippine volleyball.

“We welcome the partnership of Cloudfone with PSL. This is a big support because in this Grand Prix, we are launching the tablet system for the competition. The timing of the partnership is really good,” says PSL President Ramon Suzara.

The PSL precedes other leagues in the country as it pioneers the Volleyball Challenge System, which requires the use of tablets. Cloudfone, as the PSL’s official technology partner, provides all the tablets needed to make this breakthrough possible.

The Volleyball Challenge System kicked off at International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) games in 2013 and was first adopted at an Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. It allows coaches to use a tablet to officially call timeouts and request challenges through video review, among others.

“This is being used now in international volleyball. There used to be just a button that coaches press underneath their seats when they need to call a timeout. But this time, we have a tablet,” says Dr. Laurel.

The PSL begins implementing the system in the Grand Prix’s semi-finals. All teams to make it to this stage are issued Cloudfone Cloudpad tablets.

These developments showcase the two organizations’ common passion for innovation, volleyball, and elevating Filipinos’ skills and talents to international standards.

“The Philippine SuperLiga is the only league sanctioned by the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) and the FIVB,” says Dr. Laurel. “We want to keep up with the standards that they set. We follow competition regulations like an international governing body.”

Fans of the sport and the brand alike can know more about Cloudfone’s products and services by approaching Cloudfone booths installed at game venues or visiting cloudfone.com.ph. The company offers a wide range of devices such as the recently launched Next Infinity Series boasting screens with an 18:9 aspect ratio.

Expect equally exciting announcements about Cloudfone and their partnership with PSL as the conference progresses.
