Golden Fiesta’s ‘Heart Healthy Camp’ held first leg at Nuvali

A tropical cyclone had come and gone, the sun was up bright and early, and for the Philippines’ leading cooking oil brand, Golden Fiesta, it was perfect weather for the special gathering of health enthusiasts, both incorrigible veterans and newbies in the fitness game.

The Heart Skips low hurdles at the Golden Fiesta Heart Healthy Camp improves leg power and agility, speeds up metabolism, and improves blood circulation to the heart.

Clad in their exercise gear, they all trooped to Solenad 1 in Nuvali, Laguna, last Saturday, November 11, some as early as 6 a.m., for Golden Fiesta’s Heart Healthy Camp—a fun-filled holistic fitness program designed to improve one’s overall body strength and conditioning.

Their singular goal: to jump-start a heart-healthy lifestyle and be physically fit at any age.

The sunny weather matched the high spirits of participants—some with their families or groups of friends in tow—as they kicked off the weekend on a high note.

The organizers couldn’t have felt more gratified as Golden Fiesta successfully held the first leg of its Heart Healthy Camp. The free-admission fitness camp, after all, was warmly received by scores of fitness enthusiasts who quickly filled up the Solenad 1-Flex Lot and got the new fitness regimen going.

Camp participants readily tried out an assortment of workout routines and activities that were categorized into beginner, intermediate, and advance levels that matched their varying fitness requirements.

Celebrity chef and fitness buff Jose Sarasola holds a live cooking demo and food sampling of homey and hearty comfort meals made using the heart-healthy Golden Fiesta Canola Oil.

Each station was manned by professional coaches and trainers to ensure that everyone was carrying out the exercises properly and safely. The workout activities included Pumps! Plyometric Box Jumps; Heart Skips! Low Hurdles; Heart Beats! Agility Ladders; Elastic Heart! Fitness Band; Heart Swing! Kettle Bells; and Heart Waves! Battle Ropes.

The morning was likewise made livelier by a Zumba session led by top Zumba and yoga instructor Karen Buenvenida.

Zumba and yoga instructor Karen Buenvenida leads the Golden Fiesta Heart Healthy Camp participants in a Zumba session to jump-start the morning.

The camp participants might have worked up quite an appetite after all the activities that they eagerly watched a live cooking demo—of recipes using heart-healthy Golden Fiesta Canola Oil—conducted by Pinoy celebrity chef Jose Sarasola.

Sarasola showed the audience how to prepare simple, heart-healthy meals like Golden Fiesta Lettuce Salad with Guyabano Vinaigrette, Golden Fiesta Bangus Back Fillet and Adobo Kangkong Duo, and Golden Fiesta Japanese Chicken Katsu in Curry Sauce.

Nutritionist-dietician Fia Batua conducts “Heart Talk” and explains the benefits of using the heart-healthy Golden Fiesta Canola Oil in reducing the risk of heart disease.

The cooking demo was followed by a food sampling, of course.

“To be healthy, you have to eat healthy, and part of that lifestyle is choosing the right kind of oil. There’s a misconception that all oils are unhealthy—that’s not the case with the heart-healthy and versatile Golden Fiesta Canola Oil, which is not only good for frying but also for making sauces and salad dressings. It does not take rocket science to learn and make healthy meals at home,” Sarasola said.

“To reach the goal that you want in life, you have to really work hard for it. And when it comes to achieving that healthy lifestyle and physically fit body, Golden Fiesta Canola Oil is there to aid you,” he added.

Golden Fiesta Canola Oil is a rich source of cholesterol-reducing phytosterols, an all-natural plant extract that can reduce your body’s cholesterol level by as much as 15 percent. Scientific studies and trials show that consumption of two grams of phytosterols per day has the potential of diminishing one’s risk of developing coronary heart disease.

Participants were encouraged to learn more health tips by engaging in “Heart Talks,” which was conducted by licensed nutritionist-nietician and fitness specialist Fia Batua.

“We Filipinos can’t say no to fried food, but the good news is Golden Fiesta is promoting simple changes that we can do on a daily basis to improve our overall health. We urge everyone to start these simple lifestyle changes in your kitchen,” Batua said.

“Canola oil is one of the best and most nutritious oils in the market—it’s even healthier and cheaper than olive oil,” she added. “Canola oil is rich in omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids that are very good for the heart. You can use it for baking, frying, and as dressing.”

According to Carl Constantino, category marketing manager at NutriAsia, the Golden Fiesta Heart Healthy Camp is the brand’s way of reaching out to Filipino consumers and encouraging them to be more mindful of their food choices and to maintain an active lifestyle despite tight schedules.

“We are very happy that residents of Laguna and nearby areas took this opportunity to learn and enjoy new fitness techniques from fitness experts and enthusiasts—all for free,” Constantino enthused.

“Today, our camp participants brought home some useful tips from nutrition and fitness experts and learned how to cook their favorite fried dishes—plus new recipes that they can try at home—using heart-healthy Golden Fiesta Canola Oil.”

After the Nuvali leg, the Golden Fiesta Heart Healthy Camp will proceed to Track 30th at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig onNovember 26 (Sunday) and to Eton Centris Walk in Quezon City on December 3 (Sunday).

The Golden Fiesta Heart Healthy Camp is coming soon to a venue near you, so make sure to check out Golden Fiesta’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/GoldenFiestaPH/ for updates on upcoming legs.

Cordlife Philippines celebrates 1st World Cord Blood Day

I used to work in a hospital before. I remember when I was assigned at Delivery Room as a ward clerk. No one saved those umbilical cords for cord blood banking. It was thrown away right after deliveries. I should know because I was documenting each (Normal and Caesarean Section) deliveries in my shift. This was in the mid 90s. Little did I know that baby's cord can be used for medical treatment. It has since treated over 80 life-threatening diseases such as leukemia, thalassemia major, lymphoma and other blood disorders.

To those who do not know Cord blood is the blood in your baby's umbilical cord. The baby's cord blood can be collected at birth and stored for future medical use.
It is rich in stem cells that can morph into all sorts of blood cells. Both cord blood and cord tissue are rich sources of powerful stem cells.

That could be  used to treat diseases life threatening diseases and  metabolic disorders.

In case something happened to the baby or the family who needed medical treatment. Cord blood could help save lives of those you loved around.

If I have known it before or if someone advised me for cord blood banking. I would avail of it during those times. I had 3 normal deliveries.  Because cord banking is the best investment and gift that you could give to your loved ones, when they needed it for the future.

Cord blood, a newfound and non-controversial source of stem cells, has since saved thousands of other children from dreaded diseases through 40,000 cord blood stem cell procedures performed to date. Yet, not everyone is aware of the need to preserve this valuable, vital resource. In fact, in 98% of childbirths, cord blood is thrown away as medical waste.

It’s About Time
This year, November 15 has finally been designated as the first ever World Cord Blood Day. Arising as an answer to the need to promote awareness and expand education on the life-saving benefits of cord blood and cord blood banking, this is a celebration filled with talks, lectures and activities geared at reaching more families about this life saving resource and procedure.

In the country, Cordlife Philippines led the celebrations for this important event as the prime mover in the drive to enlighten Filipino families, particularly expectant parents, on the benefits of cord blood banking as an available standard option for treating over 80 life-threatening diseases such as leukemia, thalassemia major, lymphoma and other blood disorders.

Cordlife PH recently held a talk hosted by Cordlife Brand Ambassador Dimples Romana. The event was attended by Cordlife Ambassadors Nina Corpuz and Vanessa Matsunaga, to name a few.

The day’ 5 events revolve around the value and benefits of cord blood and cord blood banking, the latest developments in its use such as in the other areas of regenerative medicine such as the treatment of spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy and more.

Dr Arvin Faundo, one of the leading experts in Stem Cell Transplantation in the Philippines, answered many questions about cord blood and cord blood banking and how it serves as a non-controversial source of valuable stem cells that can save the lives of children afflicted with various dreaded diseases.

According to Dr. Faundo, "expectant parents in this country must be given sufficient information on the importance of cord blood banking. If the choice is not made, that chance is lost for good. "

The highlight of the celebrations is a ceremonial pact between Cordlife Philippines, its partners and its celebrity brand ambassadors including Vanessa Matsunaga, Nina Corpuz and host Dimples Romana to work hand in hand to promote and spread awareness of about cord blood and cordblood banking-a life-changing medical development that can save the lives of children all over the world.

Why is this crucial? Everyone knows about stem cells, they are at the forefront of one of the most fascinating and revolutionary areas of medicine today. However, not everyone knows that cord blood contains the healthiest stem cells that can replenish blood, regenerate damaged bone marrow, and treat blood cancers as well as correct genetic defects.

The Urgency of Testing for HIV

The Department of Health (DOH) released an alarming report that underscores the seriousness of the Philippines’ HIV epidemic. There are 56,000 Filipinos with HIV in the country and that number is still rising, with an average of 30 new cases reported each day, according to “The State of the Philippine HIV Epidemic 2016: Facing Challenges, Forging Solutions” by the DOH.
The data also show that the greatest number of HIV cases cluster around a certain profile or demographic. Nearly half, 49%, of HIV-infected Filipinos are homosexuals and bisexuals--particularly those who engage in male-to-male sexual intercourse. More disturbingly, HIV-infected Filipinos are mostly young people, at ages 15-24 years old.
‘Youth epidemic’

According to Dr. Rontgene Solante, infectious disease specialist at ManilaMed, more teens and college students are already getting infected with HIV. Other young people, like call center workers, in particular, are a vulnerable group.

The unprecedented spike in HIV infections among the youth has lead the National Youth Commission (NYC) to describe it as a  ‘youth epidemic’ back in 2016.

The current law for HIV testing does not allow screening for youth  below 18 years old--without the presence of any parent or guardian. This discourages at-risk teens who may already be infected from getting tested for HIV.
Teens who are sexually active are generally hesitant to open up to their parents, especially in the Philippines where sex is still a taboo topic for conversation. Those who are sexually active outside of marriage face social disapproval and shaming. These factors keep at-risk youth from having themselves tested for HIV.
In 2016, National Youth Commission Chairman Aiza Seguerra called on revising regulations for HIV testing, to allow young people to get HIV testing even without parental consent. He pointed out that more Filipinos aged 15 or younger are reported to be HIV positive. He added that it’s harder for young people to get proper diagnosis because of the stigma attached to HIV.
Stigma vs. testing
According to Dr. Solante, given than the rate of HIV testing done in the Philippines is still low, many Filipinos are now having sex with multiple partners not knowing that they are infected. This, naturally, leads to more infections. Another harmful effect is that these unaware, undiagnosed HIV-positive people are unlikely to receive anti-HIV medication until it’s too late.
A person with HIV usually has no symptoms. He or she feels good, looks healthy, and even seem fit. This means such a person would see no need to get HIV testing. All the while he or she is having sex with and infecting others. By the time that person does show or feel symptoms, it’s already too late.

“If you are HIV-positive, we already have ART or anti-retroviral therapy that can help stop the disease from progressing. It’s been shown that ART can suppress HIV so it does not become full-blown AIDS. This greatly increases an infected person’s lifespan and improves health and quality of life.

“Without treatment, an HIV-infected person would progress into the advanced stage of the disease. This is when the person already shows the symptoms of AIDS. Once a person becomes symptomatic, there’s nothing that can be done anymore. There’s no more cure and the outcome is fatal,” said Dr. Solante.
He suggests that HIV-testing be made mandatory as part of the process of job application, and part of the annual physical exam. There are already many areas where a person can get tested for HIV and this can be done discreetly without violating that person’s privacy.
Dr. Solante also says the stigma associated with HIV testing needs to be dispelled. As long as that stigma is strong, thousands of persons with HIV will not get tested. They will remain unaware that they need treatment and that they are spreading the disease. Thousands more will get AIDS and die.
“This shows that HIV testing is really crucial in stopping this epidemic,” said Dr. Solante.

The ART for HIV

By DOH’s projections, the number of HIV-infected people in the country will triple by 2022. This isn’t a case of alarmism or fear-mongering. The HIV-AIDS epidemic in the country is that serious already. Without quick and proper intervention, it will only get worse.
According to Dr. Solante, the DOH has been continuously working on campaigns to reduce HIV cases.
For one, they’re administering immediate care after diagnosis. Then, they encourage people to get screened as early as possible. And finally, they’re advocating enrollment for a viral-suppressing treatment called antiretroviral therapy or ART.

ART is a combination of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs that contain HIV. Make no mistake, the therapy doesn’t kill or cure the virus, but it prevents it from further growth and transmission. Dr. Solante added that ART is free and is accessible at various government hospitals, health centers, and treatment hubs. Supplies for 2 – 3 months are provided, so patients aren’t required to visit monthly.

Thanks to medical advances, HIV is no longer a death sentence. When treated with ART, plus changes in one’s lifestyle, behavior, and sexual practices (like using condoms), HIV becomes a chronic but highly manageable disease. Patients who observe proper and continuing treatment plus a healthy lifestyle can have a normal and long life.

Ayala Land's Nuvali “Magical Field of Lights” is open to the public from Nov 11 to January 3, 2018

You know its that time of the year when christmas displays, tunnels, giant christmas trees, are being launched at the malls. But the most anticipated event of the year is when Ayala Land’s largest eco-community estate Nuvali launches “Magical Field of Lights” on  November 11, 2017 at the Nuvali football field beside Ayala Malls Solenad. The field lighted up over 5,000 LED bulbs dancing to christmas hymns. It was magical, it brought me to tears. I know Ill be back again next week with the kids. The kids will surely love the show.

Starting November 11, 2017 up to January 8, 2018. The nightly show from 6:00 to 10:00 pm is open to all guests and can be viewed at the Nuvali football field also known as The Fields, right beside its retail complex Ayala Malls Solenad.

Dubbed the “Magical Field of Lights”, the first ever lights and sounds show to light up a whole outdoor field winning a Silver Stevie award for best exhibition display, is the sequel to last year’s maiden launch upgraded with colorful light spheres scattered all over the fields as well as featuring the people’s favorite, the 50-meter light tunnel, festive LED Christmas trees, and dandelion light installations. A Christmas fair that showcases traditional Filipino Christmas culinary treats complements the nightly spectacle on the fields.

“We engaged the best local artisans, engineers, and designers to come up with a truly captivating Christmas treat for residents and visitors to Nuvali,” said Jenn Chua, Nuvali Marketing Manager. The Nuvali light and sound show team developed a combination of light-and-sound technology with inventive and dream-like choreographed light arrangements which fully embodied the spirit of Christmas.

This year, the audience will get to enjoy three new medleys featuring popular songs such as Kumukutikutitap by Ryan Cayabyab, Ang Pasko ay Sumapit, and Joy to the World. Before and after watching the light and show, visitors can visit nearby Solenad mall to explore its shops and Christmas bazaars, or watch the latest films in any one of the four state-of-the-art theaters equipped with with Dolby Digital, Recliner Seats, and the latest in sound technology, Dolby Atmos.

Nature lovers and adrenaline-junkies can also check out Nuvali’s outdoor adventure playground and teambuilding facilities to try out the roller coaster zipline, Asia’s tallest Free Fall, wall climbing and bike tracks. Families may also opt to enjoy the Christmas cool breeze and watch movies under the stars at the Nuvali Nightsky Cinema events in partnership with Skycable, Fox Movies and Cinema One with shows on November 25, December 2 & 3, and December 16. Guests can also opt to stay a little longer for a Christmas staycation at the 150-room Seda Hotel Nuvali.

Nuvali expects to surpass last year’s total visitor count at more than 900,000 with guests coming from Metro Manila and nearby cities like Laguna, Cavite, and Batangas. Aside from spreading yuletide cheer, the light show encourages the community to enjoy the outdoors and Nuvali’s wide open lush spaces which features a 35-kilometer mountain bike trail, a multi-functional lake, hiking paths, a wildlife and bird sanctuary, and a tree nursery and demo farm called Greens & Patches.

“By deriving inspiration from nature and carefully studying the estate’s distinct landscape, the show would like to represent and highlight Nuvali’s generous 50-50 open-space to built-environment ratio,” said Chua.

At 2,290-hectares, Nuvali is the largest mixed use development of Ayala Land that is an integrated eco-community with over 400 shops at Ayala Malls Solenad, 150-room Seda Hotel, office buildings, an events place, QualiMed Hospital, 2 schools and over 6,000 residents in multiple residential developments by Ayala Land Premier, Alveo, Avida, and Amaia.
