Depression is Real: How some celebrities dealt with depression in BRATS 2

It can be hard to tell sadness and depression apart when you are in the middle of a very sad time in your life. After listening to these celebrities, I have come to a realization that sadness differs from depression.


Dealing with depression requires action, but taking action when you’re depressed can be hard. I guess the best thing to do when you know someone who suffers from it, is to talk with him/her and listen. Listen very closely and be a friend.


The Boy R. Abunda Talk Series (BRATS) finished another round of talk and sharing on the topic Mental Health a few weeks ago.

2016 Miss International Kylie Versoza, motivational speaker Quennie Maravillas, former varsity player Nykko Bautista, Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Bela Padilla willingly shared and revealed their bouts with depression in the past.

Kylie was diagnosed as clinically depressed four years ago. She was in denial and ashamed to talk about it because people expect her to be “perfect.” She thought of herself as "ugly, stupid, worthless, not good, smart and pretty enough."



Kylie advised people suffering from depression not to be afraid to speak the truth and not to be shy to speak to a loved one." She went the natural way ( of healing) by having to exercise a lot, do yoga and being around people who are ready to listen. She feels lucky she has a good support system around her.

Nykko's depression started two years ago, when his friends noticed something was off about him. He couldn’t sleep well and had difficulty functioning. He thought it was normal until he started going downhill and everything was in disarray. He took sleeping pills to sleep better. He felt useless and thought of suicide. But Nikko had a change of heart. He realized suicide was not the answer. He also did not want his parents to suffer the pain. Nykko said he knew he’ is okay by recognizing what the five senses can do.

Quennie attempted to commit suicide five times. Everybody thought she was doing fine because she was a motivational speaker. Deep inside, her world was crumbling.  She wanted to become a teacher but she lost it. She wanted to become a politician and again, she lost it. She wanted to be with someone but failed. She lost everything that she wanted.

But Queenie had to be strong. Today, she can now talk about her past openly.

Bela suffered from depression. She said that she is  easily affected by the characters she portrays and finds it difficult detaching herself from them. Like her role in Probinsyano where it took her time to process that she was just playing a character and nothing bad happened to her.

 Jasmine's depression started during her younger years with her experiences as a kid. She said that she was not able to talk about it to people who could have enlightened her. "Sometimes, you just need someone to listen and accept you without judgment. I have an avenue now and my next step is to go back again to a mental health professional because I know I can’t solve this with just a friend and family members only.”

Rico’s Cebu's Best Lechon, finally opens tomorrow Aug 3!

"Best Pig Ever," and with those three words, late great Anthony Bourdain, put Cebu Lechon on the world culinary map.

For us Pinoys, those big and special celebrations wouldnt be complete without a lechon on the main table and though I grew up near La Loma--which they say is the lechon capital of the Philippines. Almost all the foodies point to Cebu Lechon being the best--and Mr. Bourdain confirmed it.

I've never been to Cebu but all my friends who've been there have told me that trying out the lechon there should be part of any itinerary.

Its a good thing I dont have to go to Cebu to have a taste of their authentic lechon, because finally Rico's--Cebu's Best Lechon had just opened its very first restaurant in Manila.

So you could just imagine my excitement when I got the invite to be among the first to dine in the resto ahead of its public opening. I actually skipped breakfast just so i could make room and be able to try more of their specialties.


And like I mentioned living just a few blocks away from all those roasting stations in La Loma I was really curious if Cebu's lechon was really better.

Rico's Lechon Restaurant in Fort Strip has got that homey vibe into it. You know the feeling that you are there to eat and to taste everything.

When the waiter asked orders for our table.  I ordered dinuguan and spicy lechon. My table mates asked for humba, lechon sisig, seafood kare kare, regular lechon, and buco pandan for dessert.

If you're on a diet, I would recommend sizzling tanigue, gising gising, and chopsuey for you. I love that their tanigue is freshly cooked, not malansa.

I admit I fell in love with their spicy lechon. It is not that spicy as it is tolerable. You can eat it alone or with their special sauce lami.  It is tasty, the skin is crackling, the meat oh so tender and juicy.

Everyone took home 2 kilos of lechon. When we got home, we put it in the freezer and reheated the next day. We ate it for lunch and dinner. Masarap pa din!

Tomorrow is the big day for lechon fans as Rico’s –Cebu’s best lechon–finally opens its first branch in Manila!



Being the first Filipino brand in the roster of international restaurant brands operated by Meat Concepts Corp., Rico’s Lechon’s Manila debut, as well as the arrival of its famed cooks and roasting team from Cebu, is met with much anticipation and lip-smacking fanfare in its grand opening tomorrow August 3, 2018.

The Roasting Pit is built with innovative mechanism for its exhaust and adjusting temperatures, upholding quality and food safety standards. Customers – and even passersby – can view the lechon roasting at all times and even from the outside.
