Ginebra San Miguel launches the 2019 Never Say Die Jersey Collection featuring Robert Jaworski SR, Jayjay Helterbrand, Mark Caguioa, Scottie Thompson and Justin Brownlee

Ive been a fan of Barangay Ginebra ever since they started  playing in the 80s. I remember escaping my last subject from school just to watch the game   (I was in college then) and always lost my voice during their championships.  I cursed their opponent during the game. Hahaha. Those were the days. My father who was a true blue Ginebra fan never missed a game from the team and collected paraphernalia from Ginebra.

I was surprised when I learned that they have been playing on the court  for the past 40th years. Id really like to know what the "old players" has been doing lately.

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel recently celebrates their 40th years with their Never Say Die Legacy.

Ask any Barangay Ginebra San Miguel player what keeps them going on the court even when the odds are against them, the answer – the fans. Win or lose, the legions of die-hard Barangay Ginebra San Miguel fans have shown their commitment to the team. For 40 years, chants of “Gi-neb-ra!” have rocked stadiums where the team played. In this age of social media, every Barangay Ginebra game is sure to be a top trending topic on Twitter. Their games are able to draw SRO crowds even in the 55,000-seat Philippine Arena in Bulacan, the world’s largest indoor arena. No other fandom has shown such devotion to a basketball team. Where Barangay Ginebra goes, they follow. Indeed, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel has the best fans in the world.

THE BIRTH OF NSD (NEVER-SAY-DIE)
The passion of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel fans mirrors the fervor of the players once they get on the court. After all, this is the team that lives and breathes the words, Never-Say-Die.

It all began in 1985.  Though the team was formed in 1979, the year 1985 went down in Philippine basketball history as the year Ginebra San Miguel’s Never-Say-Die spirit was born.  The protagonist in this historical moment is no other than Robert Jaworksi, Sr. After being hit by a wayward elbow in the second quarter, the Big J had to leave the game to go to the hospital.  To everyone’s shock, he returned in the third quarter with seven stitches on his lip.  The Gins were behind by 15 points going into the final seven minutes of the game when Jaworski re-entered the court and led the team to victory, sparking a frenzy that to date, is unmatched. This was the beginning of Ginebra’s Never-Say-Die mantra.

THE LEGEND LIVES ON
Year after year, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel players continued the team’s Never-Say-Die legacy.

“The Fast and The Furious” duo of Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand showed resilience and determination when they fought hard to end the team’s seven-year drought in the 2004-2005 season to win the PBA Fiesta Conference.  Moreover, they turned this victory into a back-to-back win as they also claimed victory in the following conference – Philippine Cup Conference.

Helterbrand has since retired but believes that the team’s NSD spirit is alive in the current players, like Scottie Thompson who is making history himself. He recorded his third triple double and bagged the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals MVP.  He brings his best in every game, fighting for every rebound, taking the shots and giving tough defense.

Another current player giving his all in every match is Justin Brownlee. His buzzer-beating three-pointer clinched the 2016 Governor’s Cup for the Gin Kings, their first after eight years. The game exemplified the NSD spirit with the team coming back from a 15-point deficit at half time. Brownlee returned the following season and helped Barangay Ginebra defend the Governor’s Cup, this time in front a new PBA record crowd attendance of 54,068 at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.

40TH ANNIVERSARY JERSEY COLLECTION
To thank Barangay Ginebra San Miguel fans for their four decades of support, Ginebra San Miguel is launching the 2019 Never Say Die Jersey Collection featuring the Living Legend and father of Never-Say-Die spirit, Robert Jaworski, Sr. (7); the unforgettable “The Fast and the Furious” duo, Jayjay Helterbrand (13) and Mark Caguioa (47), fast-rising basketball superstar Scottie Thompson (6), and the most beloved PBA import who has won the hearts of Pinoy basketball fans Justin Brownlee (32). These limited edition jerseys will be worn by the team in the upcoming 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

What makes the 2019 Jersey Collection special? “This is the first time in the 40-year history of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel that ‘Never-Say-Die’ is featured in the team jersey. Barangay Ginebra San Miguel has become synonymous to the never-say-die spirit that has been the mantra not only of the Gin Kings but also of every kabarangay. Our tribute to never-say-die, which began with coach Robert ‘Sonny’ Jaworski, Sr., is also a tribute to the team’s legions of fans who have not only embraced and loved the team but also embodied the never-say-die attitude,” says Ginebra San Miguel Brand Manager Paolo Tupaz.

To avail of the jerseys, just buy any GSMI product. Every six (6) seals of Ginebra San Miguel or any five (5) caps of GSM Blue, GSM Blue Flavors, Primera Light Brandy and Ginebra San Miguel Premium Gin, entitles customers to purchase one jersey for only P100 at your favorite supermarket or convenience store outlets nationwide.  Fans can get the Ginebra San Miguel 2019 Jersey Collection until June 30, 2019.

Disney is passing on the legacy of Aladdin’s music to two of the country’s young vocal powerhouses, Morissette and Darren Espanto

‘A Whole New World’ has enthralled generations of audiences and brought the shining, shimmering, splendid story of Disney’s Aladdin to life. The iconic song by award-winning composer, Alan Menken, garnered multiple awards, including a Grammy Award for Song of the Year and an Academy Award for Best Original Song, while the film also won an Academy Award for Best Original Score.

The award-winning song is especially close to many Filipino hearts because Disney tapped Filipino Broadway star, Lea Salonga, to provide the singing voice of the brave princess Jasmine in the 1992 animated film.

Now, Disney is reimagining the beloved tale of Aladdin and along with it, revamping its timeless music for a new generation. In the Philippines, Disney is passing on the legacy of Aladdin’s music to two of the country’s young vocal powerhouses, Morissette and Darren Espanto, who worked together on a localized version of the film’s most successful song, ‘A Whole New World’.

“Here at Disney Philippines, we collaborate with like-minded brands and individuals to deliver the best experiences to our Filipino fans in a locally relevant manner. Through our localization efforts, we continue to build connections with Filipino fans to bring them even closer to their favorite characters and stories, such as Aladdin", shared Veronica Cabalinan, Country Head of The Walt Disney Company Philippines.

At a special listening party with the media, Morissette and Darren Espanto treated guests to an amazing live performance of the much-anticipated duet. Here, Disney also gave attendees a first glimpse of the magical music video.

“I grew up with Disney, listening and singing along to the songs of so many of their movies. I never would have imagined that I would be given the opportunity to sing one of their most amazing classics. It’s truly a dream come true to work with a brand that has brought me so many happy childhood memories and now, to be a part of the childhood experiences of an entirely new generation,” shared Darren.

For Morissette, taking on the project was a great responsibility, “The fact that the original version was sung by the legendary Lea Salonga, makes being chosen for this project truly an honor. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I wish our rendition of this beautiful song makes people happy.”

Walt Disney Pictures’ “Aladdin” opens in Philippine theaters on May 22, 2019. Tickets to the film will be available for sale starting May 10. Use #AladdinPH to join the conversations online.

Advertisers, ad agency execs and students gather for the largest celebration of creativity for CreativeFest 2019

More than 600 advertisers, creatives from various agencies and students of allied studies came in full force to celebrate the power of innovation, ideas, and creativity at CreativeFest 2019 last April 25 and 26 at the Makati Shangri-La Manila.

The event, spearheaded by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies of the Philippines (4As) and the Creative Guild of the Philippines, brought together some of the biggest names in the field of advertising to discuss the most pressing topics in the industry today with the goal to inspire practitioners and prove to the world that CREATIVITY RULES.

4As Chairman and BBDO Guerrero Chairman and Chief Creative Officer David Guerrero delivers the welcome remarks during CreativeFest 2019 at the Makati Shangri-La Manila last April 25.

“It is important that the leading creative agencies take the responsibility to demonstrate how best advertising can be done. We do that by bringing together people who understand behavior, people who can listen to and advise brand owners, and people who can create ideas and bring it all to life,” 4As Chairman and BBDO Guerrero Chairman and Chief Creative Officer David Guerrero said during his welcome address.

The first day of the CreativeFest was headlined by Fernando Machado, chief marketing officer of Burger King and one of the world’s most awarded marketers. Machado discussed how a brand and an agency can work hand-in-hand to create effective ideas that can help elevate the experience of consumers. This was followed by a panel discussion among the executives of some of the country’s leading ad agencies and some of their top clients on how the two parties can bridge the gap between them and build better partnerships that promote creativity.

Ted Lim of Dentsu Asia Pacific espoused the value of looking at data and trusting your gut to create some life-changing creative work. This was then followed by a discussion among some of the leading women in the industry today. The panel zeroed in on the inspiring journey of some of advertising’s lady bosses as they climbed the ladder of success.

Jollibee’s Francis Flores and Raul Castro of McCann Worldgroup Philippines did a back-to-back talk on the invaluable partnership between the client and the creative. And to cap off the first day, Jury Heads of the Kidlat Awards sat together to discuss some of their favorite entries this year.

To wind down the day, participants were treated to a night of partying and merry-making through the Pob-Crawl, where they enjoyed drinks and food at four of the top pubs in Makati’s Poblacion district.

The second day started with a talk from Google Design Lead and creator of Facebook’s Safety Check Carla Echevarria, who delivered the keynote on Creative Technology. This was followed by a panel discussion among the country’s digital gurus about the important role of creativity in the digital world.

Another highlight was the talk of Lego Group Creative Director Budjette Tan, author of award-winning comics and soon-to-be Netflix series Trese, wherein he imparted lessons on Creative Storytelling. His was followed by Facebook China’s Kitty Lun, with her talk about putting “People First.”

In one of the most powerful moments of the CreativeFest, ad industry icon and former Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez, Jr. delivered a stirring speech about Creative Purpose. “Where do you draw the line between fact and fiction? Creativity and exaggeration? There is a great temptation to go on cheat mode when there is a financial implication,” Jimenez said in his speech. “The truth does not sell itself; you must sell it to the people.”

Meanwhile, Dentsu Tokyo’s Ryosuke Sakaki and Takashi Koyama discussed Project Open Meals, an innovative concept which sees the digitization of food to make it possible to consume it whenever and wherever we want--even in space. The second day of talks was closed with a panel discussion about the future of storytelling, where some of the country’s most innovative production houses, directors, and content creators came together to chart the path of Filipino storytelling.

Creative Guild of the Philippines President and Dentsu Jayme Syfu Chairmom Merlee Jayme concluded the event by recapping some of the highlights of CreativeFest 2019 and praised the organizing committee for their hard work.

“These two days have proven that, undoubtedly, creativity rules,” Jayme said. “But aside from that, we have seen the power of creativity and how it can help transform the lives of more people. The past two days forced us to consider some important things, including how we can shape the future through creative thought and how we impact the world through our creative power. I believe that we successfully accomplished what we sought to do with the CreativeFest; we inspired people and made them think, and after everything that’s all we can ask for.”

Tully: A Side of Motherhood We Hardly See”

Starring Academy Award winner Charlize Theron, Tully is a comedy-drama that shows us a raw and emotional side to motherhood that might not have gotten the spotlight before, as well as the importance of solidarity and empathy towards mothers.

No one in the world right now can say that being a mother is an easy job, but not a lot of people who aren’t mothers can truly express just how difficult it can be —physically, emotionally, and mentally. It’s this more nuanced and more difficult struggle that Tully shows audiences in an honest, heart-breaking, yet humorous way.

Add caption

The film is written by Diablo Cody and directed by Jason Reitman, marking the fourth project that the pair has collaborated on. In the past, Cody and Reitman have worked on Jennifer’s Body (2009), the critically acclaimed Juno (2007), and most recently, Young Adult (2011), which also starred Charlize Theron.

© 2018 Focus Features. All Rights Reserved.

Theron, who plays Marlo in Tully, is a mother of two with a third on the way. This unplanned pregnancy has not come at the best time for Marlo and her husband Drew, due to how young their first children are and the fact that one of them, Jonah, has an undiagnosed developmental disorder. Marlo’s world is brimming with tension and stress — between Drew always being pulled away on business trips, her pregnancy, and two children who need more attention that she could possibly give, it’s a warzone. And if that’s not enough, their new-born enters the picture and the anarchy has tripled.

Moviegoers are no strangers to seeing the pressures of motherhood on screen, but what Tully does differently is in the biting honesty of its portrayal. Theron is fearless in her role, displaying each and every unglamorous reality of maternity. Beyond the physical truths — rarely washed hair, three-day-old clothes, eye bags, and post-birth baby weight (which films rarely ever depict) — there is the emotional aspect of motherhood that Theron so deftly captures. It’s the overwhelming exhaustion, the frantic stress, the glazed look when she’s at the end of her rope — these are the things that is depicted so well, making audiences really think to themselves: Wow, mothers go through so, so, so much.

Then enters Tully.

Tully (Mackenzie Davis) is a night nanny who, as a gift from Marlo’s wealthy brother, is hesitantly hired by the family. Bright, young, and bohemian, Tully watches over the children so Marlo and Drew can rest. However, as the film goes on, audiences see that Tully does not only care for children but ends up caring for Marlo as well. She extends empathy without judgment, understanding without limits, and presence without any pretence. And sometimes, it can be what a mother really needs.

Their relationship deepens as both Tully and Marlo discover the beauty and value in womanhood and motherhood. And, in an arguably rare moment in cinema, Tully and Marlo form a bond that is a true celebration of sisterhood as well.

I have found people watching the trailer going, ‘So what happens? Does the nanny kill you?’” Theron shares in an interview with Vulture. “No, she actually rescues me. We have been so inundated with those ideas that a woman can’t care for another woman, and that’s so sad.”

It’s Davis’ and Theron’s portrayals as well as the script’s depiction of women that has gotten Tully so much praise and critical acclaim. IndieWire’s David Ehrlich says: "Tully never pulls at your heartstrings quite as hard as it might, but there’s something beautiful about the way these two women both learn to love themselves, and in a way that also makes it easier for them to love each other.” Several other critics have also commended the brutally powerful and moving performances from both actresses, each carving out the soul of the film for audiences to see.

Tully ends in a stroke of genius from the writers — with a twist that has the whole internet buzzing. But for reasons that go without saying, curious movie-watchers will have to find out for themselves. Safe to say, however, that the film is a beautiful and honest ode to the experience of motherhood and the importance of empathizing with them. It delves into the heart and soul of the journey — beauty, madness, strength and all, for the rest of the world to see and be unendingly grateful for.

Stream something new and catch Tully on FOX+!
