Hallmark x 7-Eleven partners this holiday to bring cheers to street children
The air is chilly, the mood is merry, and the lights are out and sparkling. What a joy it is to have the holidays upon us once again. This is the time to give back and share the love and blessings we have received this year, as it is what the true spirit of Christmas is.
This Christmas, Hallmark is inviting you to celebrate the season with the gift of love and care. In hopes to bring holiday cheer to street children, Hallmark is partnering with PhilSeven Foundation, convenience store 7-Eleven’s charity arm, through ‘Gulong ng Karunungan’ (GNK) project. This is a mobile school project that aims to provide education to the less fortunate street children of select local cities in the Philippines.
Over the past years, GNK has helped augment the learning, supplemental feeding, and basic medical needs of over 2,000 disadvantaged youth, comprised mostly of out-of-school children and informal settlers from identified city beneficiaries.
Moreover, you as a customer can be a part of this jolly project. With every purchase of Hallmark Christmas products such as their Gift Wrappers, Gift Bags, Gift Tags and other Christmas products from 7-Eleven, a portion of the sales will be donated directly to support GNK project.
Make this season shine by celebrating it, too, with people outside your home. And when you care enough to give back, we believe that the smiles and joy of children in need are more than enough to warm your heart and make your Christmas, the merriest ever.

PTRI assists local businesses in the production and processing of locally made textiles and fabrics
Having multiple small and sustainable businesses all striving to be unique, innovative, and better can result in a healthy marketplace and well-served consumers. Supporting local businesses also helps our fellow community members who work at them.
I believe that our local craft can compete abroad when it comes to quality and design. I owned some of the best bags and mules (shoes) from some of the best designers here, that I found on social media.
Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) pursues sustainability in local fashion at the recent forum held at Conrad Hotel last December 4.
Dr. Ceferino S. Rodolfo, Vice-Chairman and Managing head of BOI and Undersecretary of the Department of Trade and Industry delivers the event’s keynote address.
While an informative talk on sustainability in the garments and textiles industry was led by Celia Elumba, Director IV of the DOST – Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI), and a detailed talk on sustainable and inclusive business models in the Philippines was rendered by Chief Executive Officer of Ananas-Anam Philippines Chuck Lazaro and Founder and Creator of Maison Metisse Adrienne Charuel.
Use what you produce; produce what you use.
This is the principle behind the efforts of the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI).
“Sustainability is producing our own textiles because it’s higher in the value chain. Using our own raw materials, having our own local skills and talents, and using our technology and processing here—it’s an industry that can enable more people to come to the workforce,” shares PTRI director Celia Elumba.
To enliven the country’s garments and textile industries, the PTRI has already developed a number of technologies to assist local businesses in the production and processing of locally made textiles and fabrics. With raw materials and technologies now readily available in the Philippines, it is apparent that the Philippines’ garment sector is ripe for revitalization.
“We have the technology. Now we’re looking for adaptors of it,” says Elumba. “We want to encourage enterprises, businesses, and investors to go and take a second look at textile production because we have more than a hundred million Filipinos now to market to.”
One example of a sustainable model is the Regional Yarn Production and Innovation Center (RYPIC) in Miag-ao, Iloilo, where PTRI collaborated with the Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U) to create a microscale facility that produces blended yarns that assists small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
The project, which is supported by the local government of Iloilo, uses natural materials available in Iloilo—positively impacting the environment by not leaving microfibers in the water when washed. In keeping with PTRI advocacy TELA (Textiles Empowering Lives Anew) Pilipinas, they have also partnered with Great Women Philippines to create and market products commercially and further promote locally made quality textiles.
With the country’s abundance of raw materials, the PTRI looks forward to more opportunities of putting up RYPICs in other locations, where all the resources are localized and all the benefits will be enjoyed by those directly involved and the local population—creating an ecosystem that can be sustained for future generations.
“There’s no better time to invest than today. We believe in the technology and its ability to change and moderate lives and improve our conditions,” Elumba says of her hope for the local garments and textile industry. “We’d love to have the collaboration and cooperation of the private sector because their creativity will surely help us find ways to improve what we have.”
Celia Elumba will speak about “Sustainability in the Garments and Textile Industry” at the 2nd Philippine Garment, Leather Industries, and Textile Expo’s Industry Forum on December 5 at the Forbes Ballroom 1 of the Conrad Hotel Manila.
The expo will run from December 5 to 8, at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City. It will feature its own Philippine Pavilion, where exhibits from local industry associations, including PTRI, will be showcased.
Sophia, the world’s first robot citizen meets up with Angkas
Its shaping up to be a very interesting Corporate Governance Conference (CGCON) 2020 as global thought leader and acclaimed American roboticist Dr. David Hanson brings his AI creation, Sophia, the world’s first robot citizen and the first robot Innovation Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme.
Dr. Hanson will be delivering a keynote entitled “Revolutionizing Boardroom Dynamics,” which will touch on how artificial intelligence and robotics are changing the way information impacts the boardroom.
Sophia on the other hand will be talking alongside Angkas CEO Angeline Tham on the topic, “The Future is Here.” Guests will also have the chance of interacting with Sophia as they can have selfies taken with her after the talk.
In the photos are : (L-R) Backrow : Tom Syquia, Subchair for Content, ICD; Tony Cailao Member – CGCON, ICD; Fred Pascual, President ICD; Frank Newmann, Trustee ICD; George Royeca, Chief Transport Advocate, Angkas; Henry Aguda, Chairman UBX /Unionbank; Taimy Cruz, Chair for Logistics, ICD; Bert Manabat, Trustee. Front Row: Amor Maclang, Chair for Public Engagement, ICD; Ida Tiongson, Trustee ICD; Angeline Tham, CEO and Founder, Angkas; Cora Guidote, Chair – CGCON ICD; Tammy Lipana, Trustee ICD.
Other topics that will be discussed in the conference are: how IoT is enhancing the workplace environment, transparency, and efficiency; the ethical implications of technological advancement to the business ecosystem; and why T.R.A.F.F.I.C. short for Transparency, Responsibility, Accountability, Fairness, Foresight, Innovation, Culture, is important and how it creates value for investors and stakeholders respectively.
The CGCON, which will be held in March 2020 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza in Pasay City was organized by the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) and will have the theme “How T.R.A.F.F.I.C. Creates Sustainable Businesses.”
“We have always championed the use of technology to make commuting easier for Filipinos, especially with the challenging traffic situation here in the country,” Angkas CEO Angeline Tham said during a press briefing. “Through our discussion at CGCON, we hope to give a better picture of how technology has worked for us both in serving the Filipino commuters and in ensuring good governance and compliance to safety rules and regulations among our biker-partners,” Tham added.
“In Angkas, for instance, we have also always advocated safe and affordable transportation while complying with the strictest safety standards and regulations. This is the crux of our work and what we believe is our role in society,” Tham maintained. “The safety of our bikers and commuters are of the utmost importance, and we will share how we have worked hard to comply with the highest safety standards and regulations.”
“I personally would like to emphasize that startups–particularly those oriented towards high technology–should always bear in mind that their concern should not be so much about their bottom line but about their impact to society,” Tham noted.
Angkas, technology innovator and pioneer in app-based motorcycle taxi services, will join the 2020 Corporate Governance Conference (CGGON) to discuss their advocacy of using technology not just as a solution to ease the burden of heavy traffic and congestion but as a tool for good governance and compliance with safety standards and regulations.
The conference will feature notable thought leaders who will participate in a dialogue that aims to break the unconscious bias between emerging technology companies and disruptors, and the practice of good corporate governance. It aims to imbibe T.R.A.F.F.I.C. as a mindset for businesses to succeed in long-term value creation for the benefit of all stakeholders.
CGCON 2020 will have an audience consisting of board chairs and directors, CEOs, CFOs, compliance officers, senior executives and managers, policy makers and regulators, institutional investors, and academics.
Five Ways to Wisely Spend your 13th Month Pay
It’s that time of the year again where people get their bonuses and go all-out with their purchases. While this might be the perfect time to tick off items from your wish list, it's also important to prioritize your spending on those purchases which can benefit you in the long run.
We list down below recommendations on how to spend your 13th-month pay wisely:
1. Buy stocks
Getting into investments can seem intimidating at first. But with the vast information that can be easily accessed online, it’s easier to be financially literate in the Philippines. Check out some books and YouTube videos on how to properly strategize and choose the right stocks and investments based on your financial goal. This can pay off in the long run as long as you make smart decisions on where your money goes.
2. Start an emergency fund
Having a separate emergency fund is a necessity in order to be prepared when the time comes for unexpected expenses such as medical bills, house, and auto repairs. At a minimum, one should have three months worth of living expenses in your emergency fund. There are also online emergency fund calculators to help you decide on how to do this. Make sure to create a separate bank account for this to properly manage your accounts. Saving up for an emergency fund and knowing that one is all set can give a person a sense of security that can allow an individual to live a more peaceful life.
3. Pay off debt
Adulting also entails being responsible for liabilities. In order to start the year completely fresh, pay off the debt you’ve accumulated throughout the year! This makes way for a clean slate and a restart on how you purchase and prioritize expenses for 2020.
4. Upgrade your home appliance
Keeping the household intact is always a priority. Home appliances play a big role in the household and should serve their purpose in both function and design. If it seems like home appliances are showing signs that they are about to break down such as discoloration, making weird noises and not doing its job efficiently, then replace them before they bring inconvenience to the household. With the different innovations out in the market, it’s important to choose the appliance that will serve one’s family’s needs. Also, watch out for sales and promos during the season that can save you money to spend on other necessities.

A bearer of joy
In many places in the Philippines, one will see underprivileged families in need of help for various aspects of their lives. Needless to say, most children from these families have to help make ends meet, hence they often prioritize the most basic necessities or utilities, over toys or other experiences.
Having witnessed the dire situation many families are facing, Lucena Ulep Calamayan, known to many as Luz, made it her lifetime advocacy to help alleviate the plight of those who are in most need of help. A community-based program volunteer coordinator of a non-profit organization, Luz began her volunteer work back in 1998 when she was still a government employee.
Luz takes the lead in many projects including livelihood programs, outreach programs, medical and dental missions, book donations, and feeding programs. One of the many remarkable projects she has been working on is the SM Bears of Joy, a campaign made in collaboration with SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls.
The Bears of Joy is a charity project of SM Cares and SM Supermalls that enjoins mall shoppers to share the simple joy of gift-giving to children: With every purchase of the Bears of Joy, another bear is given to the beneficiaries of the project. Luz says the project may seem simple and minimal but, she emphasizes, one should not underestimate the value of a soft, cuddly and comforting plush toy to a child. The experience of holding their first toy is, most often than not, a truly unforgettable moment for a child.
With these toys reaching far and wide—from urban poor communities to far flung areas—Luz shares some of her most unforgettable stories relating to the project.
She recalls a big fire that burned down a compound in Sto. Nino, Paranaque in early 2018. During the fire, one child was crying and wanted to go back to their burning shanty because she left her teddy bear there. "We had to calm the child down because their place has been razed to the ground. Luckily, may extra kaming bear so nabigyan namin siya.”
The SM Bears of Joy has also brought tears of joy to many children who have never owned a stuffed toy before. “Nangyari ito sa Kisolon, Bukidnon, remote area yun. Nung nabigyan na lahat ng bata, may narinig yung volunteer na nag-iiyakan. Akala niya nag-aaway yung mga bata so tinanong niya kung bakit sila umiiyak. Ang sagot nung isang bata, umiiyak daw sila sa sobrang ligaya.”
Luz’s distribution efforts and the SM Bears of Joy are especially known to kids in Metro Manila including numerous communities in Tondo, Manila and Payatas, Quezon City. She has participated in several donation activities led by the volunteer employees of SM.
Based on her many years of experience giving bears to children all around the Philippines, Luz shares, that for a kid who has not owned a toy his whole life, the bears are more than a prized possession. She also believes that children treasure that very moment they received the stuffed toy and that it will inspire them to work hard and give back in the future.
For Luz, genuine service knows no end. With a heart that never gets tired of helping, she sees herself continuing her charitable works for as long as her physical strength permits. She encourages everyone, especially the youth, to start lending a helping hand.
“Any act of kindness, small or big will be much appreciated by the recipient. Simply giving food to the homeless is already like doing outreach. Start by sharing your blessings sa mga beggars or destitute families in the form of food, or clothing,” said Luz.
The SM Bears of Joy is an annual Christmas charity project of SM Supermalls, Toy Kingdom and SM Cares. A pair of toy bears are sold for P200.00, where one is kept by the mall shopper, and the other bear is donated for charity to orphans or underprivileged children from indigent communities all over the Philippines. Visit any SM Supermalls or Toy Kingdom branch to get your SM Bears of Joy and help make a child happy this Christmas.

I"Milky PH brings Taiwan's authentic flavors to Manila
If there is one thing you cannot miss out in Taiwan, its bubble tea. You can find different stalls in every corner of the street in Ximending. That was the place where my hotel was located last year.
There is a tea for every one, every concoctions however weird that is, taste creamy and delicious. There is that one stall that my partner loves because it has the best tapioca pearls – they’re chewy and provide just the right amount of sweetness to the drink. I tell you, its all worth the calories hahaha.
Believe it or not, we downed 4 to 5 cups a days in 6 days, tea hopping. Making sure that we have ordered every stall's bestsellers.
There is a tea for everyone , whether its simple or traditional type of tea, milky, fruity or with taro. Thankful that Taiwan's premium milk tea goodness is now closer to home with iMilky Philippines.
If youre a first timer and a fan of Brown Sugar, I suggests you order their Bestseller Brown Sugar Pearl Milk for only P120 and their Strawberry Milk, p185 for a medium cup.
If you want your cup healthy like I do, omit the milk and order a soya milk variant for a change with no sugar. You can always customize your order. I tried their black tea with lemon and it tastes healthy, you can actually taste the tea leaves. But that is just me.
According to GrabFood estimated that Southeast Asians drink four cups of bubble tea per person per month. Thailand landed at the top of the list followed closely by Filipino consumers who reportedly drink five cups of bubble tea per person per month.
Pure and authentic. The taste of Taiwan’s premium milk tea goodness is now closer to home with iMilky Philippines.
Driven by the ‘less is more’ philosophy, I’Milky focuses on a pure and unassuming lifestyle, perfectly captured by a strict adherence to quality, natural ingredients, devoid of artificial components. Each sip is freshly crafted to ensure the best drinking experience, until the last drop. With ingredients carefully sourced from Taiwan, Premium milk tea cravings are now just a drive away.
I’Milky’s curated menu features delightful flavors such as Taro Milk Tea, Natural Brown Sugar Milk Tea, and Strawberry Milk Tea. Fresh tea and soy-based options are also available, adding variety into the mix.
The I’Milky store concept is also a sight to behold, designed to be a perfect haven for avid milk tea aficionados, with its minimalist interior, and light and airy atmosphere. The unassuming lifestyle is present not just in the drinks themselves, but the entire space, allowing you to just enjoy every sip, and every moment.
“We are so excited to bring a healthy, delicious, and truly authentic milk tea experience here in the Philippines. What’s so good about I’Milky is our passion for the simple and natural. No fuss, no drama, just a drink that you’d definitely crave for.” Says Roxanne Farillas. “Our goal is always to elevate and expand our customer’s drink experience, and bring a slice of wonderful places like Taiwan, and their amazing drink culture, closer to home.”
Discover the premium milk tea goodness at TriNoma, Robinsons Place Manila, and Ayala North Exchange and will soon open more stores across the country.
