Shoppers can enjoy exclusive promos, real time deals and other exciting offers on the best local finds for its 8.8 Love Local Sale until August 12!

Leading eCommerce platform Lazada once again joins hands with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), leveraging the 8.8 Love Local Sale to spotlight local sellers, as part of its ongoing commitment to support local businesses to build business resiliency and long-term sustainability.

Lazada Chief Operating Officer Carlos Barrera explains that Lazada’s commitments to support local Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) include driving awareness and providing consumers a channel to support homegrown brands through Lazada x Collabs, a dedicated in-app space that features local marketplace seller communities.

“We are proud to be strengthening our partnership with the DTI to uplift and support the revitalization of local industries and brands. With DTI as our exclusive partner for the 8.8 Love Local Sale, the 8.8 campaign and Lazada x Collabs will be a celebration of homegrown entrepreneurs and local products, to provide Filipinos an opportunity to discover and support local brands and products.”

In addition to placing the spotlight on various Filipino businesses and local sellers, Lazada x Collabs provides shoppers quick access to the most up-to-date discounts, vouchers, and promotions from select partner brands. Among them are homegrown chocolate maker Chocoloco and sake brand Jzaki — two of many local sellers that have diversified business and gone digital through Lazada since the pandemic hit.

From bean to bag: How a Davao chocolatier reached customers nationwide
To gourmet chocolatier Ann Lim, being able to serve nutritious, minimally processed, and high-quality cacao products to customers nationwide was a crucial consideration in selecting an eCommerce partner for her Davao-based startup Chocoloco .

Chocoloco was founded in 2017, sourcing 99% of their ingredients from Davao. The local company also grows and prepares a wide selection of cacao products. They are best known for their nib products, which are cacao-based snacks made from beans they locally grow, ferment, roast, and prepare.

When the brand launched, it was well-received among the local community, but the business owners found it a challenge to make a breakthrough in reaching more customers in other parts of the country. “Demand in the local market really could not compare to the potential for growth in markets beyond Davao alone,” shares Ann.

The brand had their sights on capturing the hearts of chocolate lovers in Metro Manila and other provinces nationwide, joining bazaars and physical events, as well as turning to online sales.

When Chocoloco first made plans to venture online, they faced the barriers of having sufficient capital and manpower to put up their own website, which led to Ann considering selling through an online platform and seeing Lazada as a viable choice as a partner.

“Lazada was an obvious choice for us when we started on our eCommerce journey; it has good brand recall, and we were able to establish our online store instantly,” shares Ann. Through establishing their store on the platform, the brand also managed to ease one of the main pain points in their business, which was with logistics. While delivering to various parts of the country was a challenge before, Chocoloco now leverages Lazada’s vast logistics network to reach its growing customer base nationwide.

Ann also favored how quickly feedback can be received and answered for consumers, improving business operations and bridging the gap in communication between her brand and their customers.

“Establishing our presence on eCommerce really helped keep our business afloat. Even with the difficulties brought about by the pandemic, we were able to continue to grow our customer base and improve our services through Lazada’s capabilities,” says Ann.

An online start for Jzaki, Bohol’s first local sake brand

Coming from their love of wine and spirits, Vanessa and Felipe Panungan established Jzaki, Bohol’s first and only locally-produced rice wine brand.

The entrepreneurial couple initially got into winemaking for their own personal consumption in 2016. As they shared their homemade creations, friends and family encouraged them to sell their products so more people could enjoy them. Encouraged, they decided to establish their brand and register their business with the DTI in 2018. In addition to sake, the couple also innovated and began offering other products including rice whiskey and sake kasu (or rice wine soap). With Felipe in charge of production, and Vanessa taking on the helm with sales and marketing, the couple worked with DTI to export Jzaki products to international markets.

When the pandemic hit in 2020, events were abruptly halted and the couple realized the impact on their business if their upcoming exhibits in Thailand and Australia did not push through. But the pair noticed that people spent so much of their time online as people were forced to stay home. Vanessa shared how the pandemic became a catalyst for people and industries to collectively innovate and adapt. “Dahil sa pandemic, during the lockdown, wala na ang mga exhibits. We saw the increase in online shopping, and that motivated us to try selling our products online as well,” shares Vanessa.

Armed with an entrepreneurial mindset, the husband and wife have been constantly learning the ropes of selling online and promoting their business on Lazada since onboarding last March. Even without any prior experience in digital marketing, Vanessa is eager to learn and continues to hone her knowledge through available resources such as Lazada University to better put Jzaki on the map in the digital space.

“Age doesn't matter in online selling,” says Vanessa proudly. “What matters is how willing people are to learn new things and adjust to challenges thrown their way. As new eCommerce sellers, the support of the Lazada team guiding us step-by-step made the process easier for us to grow Jzaki online. Being a part of this community keeps me going and energized as a small business owner.”

Google and CANVAS launch #YOUTHink magazine

This National Language Month (Buwan ng Wika), Google and the Center for Art, New Ventures, and Sustainable Development (CANVAS) launched the Cebuano version of #YOUTHink magazine to highlight the importance of local language diversity in battling misinformation.

#YOUTHink is a local youth-oriented magazine that aims to address misinformation through media and information literacy. Filled with helpful articles, the 42-page publication comes in a fun and creative zine-style format to engage young readers. It covers several topics such as the types of misinformation and their negative effects, why context matters, how to identify a fact from an opinion, and how to avoid falling for fake information among others. The magazine was translated into Cebuano by teachers and translators Hannah Aranas and Xi Zuq

Written by CANVAS Founder and Executive Director Gigo Alampay, a lawyer specializing in information and communications technology law and policy, #YOUTHink was first published by CANVAS in English in January 2021, as commissioned and funded by Google in the Philippines. The tech company conceived the title of the magazine to put emphasis on two elements: “youth” which is a vital force in addressing misinformation, and “critical thinking” which is necessary to exercise before believing, posting or sharing any information online.

“Google is committed to helping fight misinformation. We believe in the vital role of producing locally relevant learning materials to achieve this goal, while we continue to take down harmful content and raise authoritative information on our platforms,” said Mervin Wenke, Head of Communications and Public Affairs, Google Philippines. “People find it easier to understand content which uses a language that is local to them, that is why together with CANVAS, we published a Cebuano version of #YOUTHink.”

Mervin added, “This National Language Month (Buwan ng Wika) and beyond, we need to take a more inclusive approach and use local languages so more people, especially those going online for the first time or from vulnerable communities, can participate in the discussion and avoid falling for disinformation or misinformation. With Cebuano as one of the country’s major languages spoken by more than 9 million people, we hope that more Filipinos will benefit from this initiative.”

Similar to the first edition published in January 2021, Google provided funding support for the development, design, and publication of the Cebuano magazine. Initially, 5,000 copies will be distributed for free to schools, communities, and NGOs outside the National Capital Region.

The magazine includes letters and essays from several experts including: former COMELEC commissioner Atty. Luie Guia; infectious diseases specialist Dr. Edsel Salvana; scientist, and radio and TV speaker Dr. Reina Reyes; Ateneo de Manila University assistant professor of Philosophy Dr. Jacklyn Cleofas; and UP professor specializing in research on political communication and news media effects Dr. Clarissa David.

Gigo shared, “Along with the ongoing pandemic, there is also an ‘infodemic’ happening which endangers the lives of Filipinos. Publishing the media and information literacy magazine #YOUTHink in one of the country’s major local languages like Cebuano will help address this problem. Now more than ever, we also need the power of the youth--the target reader of the magazine--to uphold digital responsibility and critical thinking online.”

A PDF copy of the magazine can be accessed here (printing or sharing for selling purposes is strictly prohibited). For more information, visit: www.canvas.ph

Reader’s Digest Quality Service Awards recognizes the businesses who achieved customer service excellence

Great products keep customers interested, but it’s the excellent after-sales service that keeps them loyal. But with the lockdown restrictions of the past year and our interactions reduced to swipes, likes, emojis and digital gestures, the challenge for businesses was how to keep their customers satisfied and engaged despite the lack of physical interactions.

This is what makes the Reader’s Digest Quality Service Awards even more special this year, as it recognizes the businesses who achieved customer service excellence as we transition to the new normal.

While it has been a time of extreme difficulty for customer service – with upheavals of long-standing ways of doing business – the businesses listed in the Quality Service Awards rallied. Each day during difficult and uncertain times, they remained savvy, clever and calm in their approach to customers, so much so that the importance of kindness and understanding once again became paramount.

RESEARCH AND RECOGNITION

Great service deserves to be recognized in the Philippines and for the second year, Reader’s Digest honors them in the Quality Service Awards.

From the couriers and delivery people who carefully handled the products you ordered online, the bank tellers, store staff and customer support representatives who patiently assisted you with your inquiries, to the other non-medical frontliners, and even the company directors who gave their staff the leeway to attend to their families and work from home, we all encountered people who made those difficult times a little easier to bear.

The Quality Service Awards survey set out to gauge which companies are succeeding at this, and better still, setting new benchmarks in personalization and customer service excellence. Above all, these awards recognize how customer service can be delivered and how people should be treated.

“While the pandemic has shifted and will continue to influence the standard markers of business success, customer service remains core among those success markers,” says Sheron White, Advertising and Retail Director, Reader’s Digest Asia Pacific.

“Being a Reader’s Digest 2021 Quality Service Award winner means that these businesses possess robust, caring and talented teams. Their management style also says much about that success. They share a valuable legacy and the community sees what great work they do, and appreciates it,” she added.

Among this year’s winners are: BDO, Citibank, Mercury Drug, Goodyear Tires, Ideal Vision, SM Malls, Lalamove and SunLife.

REWARDING EXCELLENT SERVICE

The Quality Service Awards are 100% voted by Filipino consumers and designed to reward companies that provide outstanding service to their customers. The range of service providers is varied, from sectors as diverse as pharmacies/drug stores, real estate, optical shops and water companies.

In partnership with leading research company Catalyst Research, 1700 individuals from the Philippines were randomly surveyed to find out their views on which companies and businesses have the best customer service in the country.

Respondents were asked to nominate service providers in 30 categories across a broad range of industries. To qualify to vote in a category, voters had to have used a service provider from that industry recently.

Survey respondents were asked to rank their experience of the selected companies according to these key questions:

PERSONALISATION: Was an individual customer experience provided?

UNDERSTANDING: Was a genuine insight into the customer’s needs demonstrated?

SIMPLICITY: Was dealing with the company quick and easy?

RELIABILITY: Was a consistently high-quality service delivered?

SATISFACTION: Was the customer’s expectation met or, even better, exceeded?

Winners were then determined by comparing the rating of each service provider within a category received. To calculate each company’s Quality Service Score (QSS), the average score of the five key pillars was determined, and then multiplied by 10 to obtain a metric score out of 100.

The highest rated company in each category has been awarded the status of Gold Standard Winner, with the second-highest rated company awarded the status of Silver Standard Winner. This prestigious award recognizes companies that truly understand consumers’ needs.

It was a resounding success, with five trending topics on Twitter coming from the said event including the No. 1 hashtag, #SB19ForAcer!

The theme of this year's Acer Day 2021 is "Live Your World", which is also the title of the anthem performed by Geronimo and the five other international artists.

"We are very proud of Sarah, Kathryn, Daniel, and SB19 because they truly represent the new generation of Filipino artists who can captivate audiences and transcend barriers online as well as they can on a stage with a live audience in front of them. Enjoy pure bass sound with realme Cobble Bluetooth Speaker

With the way things are going,  I am guessing that the government would again be extending the ECQ until the end of August or maybe even up to the first weeks of September.

So might as well think of some activities that will keep you busy, sane and healthy as this pandemic taught us the importance of taking care of our well-being.

As many of us have been working from home for more than a year now, its easy to fall into a sedentary routine. Nobody misses the long commute and traffic but at least those short walks around the office or just even to the parking lot is a way to stretch our legs. If you are a regular reader of my blog you know I’ve made it a habit to do 30-minute exercises to balance my Netflix binges. When you are at a certain age, even those short stretches and a bit of aerobics does wonders for my body and adds a bit to my stamina.

Last week, before the ECQ I tried  walking from our house to Starbucks which was roughly 2 kilometers. It took me half an hour because I was also taking pictures (and making note of all the stores along the way). But it was the longest distance I’ve walked and it made me perspire a lot, but it was fun. Now, I’m considering doing that again when its possible and include it as part of my exercise routine.

I realized, however, that walking alone can get a bit boring. I tried using earphones but quickly decided against it as the ones that I have blocks out all the noise, which can be quite dangerous when you are walking along the sidewalks of Mindanao Avenue. Think EDSA, but substitute big trucks instead of buses, and motorcycles squeezing their way through horrendous traffic.

That’s when I realized bringing a portable speaker would be more ideal. I could just clip it to my bag or belt and I could enjoy my playlist and still be aware of the incoming traffic.

Just in time, realme sent their new realme Cobble Bluetooth speaker for us to review. The good thing is that its very easy to pair with my realme 7 smart phone and connects almost instantly via bluetooth.

I got mine in the stylish black and it only weighs 200g and fits in the palm of my hand so its easy to clip in my handbag or backpack, or you can even just hang on your bike handle.

There's a small hole intended for microphone,
Power Button, and an LED light for battery and power status

Enclosed USB Type C- Port for Charging

The realme cobble bluetooth speaker is IPX5 water resistant you don’t have to worry about accidental splash or even a light drizzle.  Rain or shine it is made to stay with you, given of course that you will take care of it.

The Cobble Bluetooth speaker has a 5W Dynamic Bass Boost Driver that ensures you’ll be able to enjoy clear music even when outdoors. Data shows that this speaker supports significantly higher loudness than that of competing devices under a variety of audio frequencies, especially in terms of bass, so you can still enjoy music even outdoors.

realme’s Bass Boost+ audio technology on the other had has made the leap from earphones to speakers. Bass Boost+ is the sound enhancement solution tuned over by the realme Music Studio. The solution fully leverages the power of the large dynamic driver to deliver a bass experience that sounds truly alive.

If you love listening to dance music or those EDM know that this speaker includes a passive radiator which creates that ever-popular bass effect. The reason it’s called a “passive” radiator is that it’s not powered by electricity but rather by the air pressure created by the smaller speaker cones that receive all power from the battery or AC source. In this manner, the passive radiator can get a whole lot of extra oomph out of a sound system without diverting valuable energy into creating that lovely bass effect that we all enjoy so much.

If you buy two speakers, you can pair two realme Cobble Bluetooth Speakers together by controlling the speaker’s multifunction button or via the realme Link app.

The device comes in three equalizer presets — Bass, Dynamic, and Bright, which can all be configured from the realme Link app. This particular feature allows you to customize the way your music sounds exactly.

What good is a portable speaker if it doesn’t have a long battery life?

The realme Cobble Bluetooth Speaker has an extremely long battery life. A 1500mAh large-capacity battery lasts up to 9 hours off a full charge (Total playtime varies depending on volume and audio content). Its battery life is a major improvement over most speakers in the market. With a battery that can last nearly half a day, the device allows you to enjoy music without having to stress about the charge.

Unlike most speakers, this one includes a Game Mode and you can switch to the game mode for watching movies or gaming, with ultra-low latency reaching 88ms, delivering you the ultimate immersive experience.

Coming in two colors: Metal Black and Electric Blue, the realme Cobble Bluetooth Speaker is available for only P1,190 (P400 OFF SRP) during the Shopee and Lazada 8.8 Sale.
