Here are some ways to keep your holiday spending under control

It’s so easy to get carried away by the holiday festivities and lose track of your holiday budget. Once the holiday shopping commences, everybody just feels extra generous and starts spending like there’s no tomorrow.

Although it’s the season of giving, it doesn’t mean giving until you’re broke. Avoid the stress of blowing your holiday budget―here are some ways to keep your holiday spending under control.

Set a Holiday Spending Budget

It’s hard to get into the festive holiday spirit if you’re broke. And you can easily be broke if you don’t put a handle on your holiday spending.

Spend reasonably by setting your holiday budget. Determine which people you plan to give Christmas presents to and how much you can afford to spend per present. As much as you want to include everyone dear to you on your Christmas list, every name that you add to your list is an added expense that can easily eat up your budget.

This is why it’s important to set a price limit for each gift. If what they want is out of your price range, consider the more affordable alternative. You really don’t want to buy all these expensive gifts and spend the next year paying for everything you gave them.

To save money, avail huge discounts when you shop with your RCBC Bankard credit card. RCBC Bankard credit cardholders can shop anywhere this holiday season and get up to PHP 4,400 cash rebate plus e-gift vouchers.

Decide what to splurge on and what to save money on. Ask yourself the important question: Should you buy everyone gifts they like no matter how pricey, or can you celebrate in other ways?

Scale Down Your Holiday Celebration

Even if things are slowly going back to normal, the threat of COVID-19 is still here. Which means we still can’t hold big family gatherings.

This can be advantageous if you want to scale down your holiday celebrations. Since you’ll only be celebrating with your immediate family, you’ll save money on food and drinks.

You can save even more by holding a Secret Santa gift exchange. This way, you won’t have to give every one individual gifts.

Another way to do this is by holding a raffle. Get everyone to contribute a gift prize if they want to join the raffle. It’s a fun way to give gifts and share laughs with the whole family. Just put your own creative and crazy spin to the game!

Also, don’t forget to send a holiday card to friends and family members you won’t be giving gifts to this year. Let them know you’re thinking of them and wishing them a happy holiday. Make your holiday cards fun, unique, and personalized as much as possible.

Consider Homemade Gifts

If you don’t want to blow your holiday budget, why not give out gifts that you made yourself? They’re thoughtful, unique, and inexpensive, especially if you already have the materials or ingredients at home.

Anyone who’s been financially affected by this pandemic naturally wants to have some wiggle room in their holiday budget. So don’t feel awkward or embarrassed if this is what you can only afford this year. It’s the thought that counts, and anyone who receives your homemade gift will appreciate the time and effort you put into making it.

Make use of your talent and creativity. Bake those cookies, create a lovely photo gift, or crochet a smartphone case! You don’t need to spend a fortune to put a smile on a loved one’s face this holiday season.

Redeem Your Credit Card Rewards

If you’ve saved up enough points on your credit card, now’s the best time to redeem that item you’ve wanted for so long. Better yet, you can redeem it for a loved one so you won’t have to spend on a gift.

If you are an RCBC Bankard credit cardholder, you can use your rewards points to redeem shopping vouchers from The SM Store, Rustan’s, Mango, Landmark, Anson’s and Wilcon. Tick off all the items on your shopping list and use these vouchers to shop.

You can also choose to give to those who really need your help the most.  Use your points to donate to the AY Foundation, WWF Philippines, Philippine Red Cross, World Vision Philippines, SOS Children's Village, or Gawad Kalinga through RCBC Bankard's Rewards for the Soul program.

Redeeming is easy.  Just call RCBC Bankard Customer Service at (02) 8888-1888.

Save Up for Expensive Christmas Gifts

If you’re planning to give lavish gifts but know your holiday budget won’t suffice, you should’ve set up a holiday fund at the beginning of the year. This way, you won’t blow your holiday budget and charge everything to your credit card.

Do this if you have a big family. Create your Holiday Fund as early as January to afford the gifts you want to buy and free up cash in your holiday budget.

To kickstart that holiday fund, open an RCBC account online now. It requires no maintaining balance, with just one valid/government ID. Open an account in minutes with RCBC Digital now.

Remember: Don’t spend money that you don’t have, and don’t swipe more than you can pay off.

Focus on Family Time

More than the gifts and the food, there are more valuable gifts to give, like the gift of time. Spend the holidays with your loved ones and just make new memories that you will cherish forever.

One thing that this pandemic taught all of us is that life is fleeting, and that it can change in just a blink of an eye. This is why the holiday season is the perfect time to reconnect with the people we love. So eat, drink, sing, dance, and laugh together!

Do Volunteer Work

The holidays are for enjoying good food, getting drunk, and spending time with loved ones. Before the pandemic, the holidays also usually meant partying until dawn and sleeping the whole day.

But this year, you can do something different, something meaningful and worthwhile that will allow you to save money at the same time.

Volunteer at an old people’s home, orphanage, or in your barangay. Help in serving food, or provide holiday games, activities, and entertainment. You can even go caroling in your neighborhood or online to spread some holiday cheer. Whatever talent you have, put it to good use. It won’t cost a thing!

Spend Only What You Can Afford

If you want to keep your holiday spending under control, spend based on what you can afford, not on what people expect to receive from you this holiday season.

It’s very tempting to be generous during the holidays. But if you’re not careful, this can lead to financial headaches after the holiday is over.

Cut back on your holiday spending when you can. Opt for inexpensive, practical gifts and low-key celebrations. And you don’t need to buy gifts for everyone you know―not if it means incurring debts that you’ll have difficulty paying.

Unionbank's Digital Journey continues to blaze the trail

In celebration of its numerous accomplishments and milestones this past year, and to give a smallpreview of what its customers can expect in 2022, Union Bank of the Philippines (UnionBank) heldanother iteration of its long-running virtual media roundtable series E-TalkTales last December 15.

During the virtual event, UnionBank Senior Executive Vice President, Chief Technology and Operations Officer, and Chief Transformation Officer Henry Aguda talked about some of the Bank's achievements for the year, while the Co-Founder and CEO of UnionBank's digital-native banking arm UnionDigital, Arvie de Vera, talked about the role that the newly formed digital bank will play in UnionBank's digital transformation journey going forward.

Aguda began the discussion by recounting how UnionBank's digital transformation journey has enabled it to brave 2020 and the equally challenging 2021. "The pandemic created this shift to digital, which we now refer to as the “new digital normal”. We changed the way we live, the way we travel, the way we interact with one another, and basically we've changed forever in terms of how we transact in the financial sector."

"But even before the pandemic, UnionBank already had this forward-looking view that digital is the way for us to move forward, and when the pandemic hit, not only did we survive, but I'm happy to say that the Bank actually thrived," according to Aguda.

He then highlighted the top 10 most notable achievements of UnionBank in 2021. These include being the only publicly listed Philippine bank to be granted a license to operate a digital-native bank; the successful groundbreaking of the UnionBank Innovation Campus, the country's first-ever learning institution focused on digital innovation; and having 21 patents for its innovative offers already approved and 18 more on the way.

Other notable achievements include the integration of Instapay 2.0 into its digital banking platform; the successful launch of the UnionBank SME Banking App; the launch of wealth management educational campaigns including the NextGen Academy; significant user growths for UBX’s platforms SeekCap, Bux, and Sentro; and the significant increase in its customer base to almost 10 million to date, from just nearly 7 million as of end-2020.

Meanwhile, de Vera provided a quick introduction to UnionDigital. UnionDigital is one of only six financial institutions in the Philippines that have officially been granted digital banking licenses by the Bangko Central ng Pilipinas to date. As UnionBank's digital banking arm, UnionDigital will focus on delivering banking and financial services to underserved sectors which the parent bank is not able to optimally cater to.

"While UnionDigital aims to empower the country's digital economy, we also aim to elevate it by bringing trust and governance into the space. We embrace innovation like a fintech, but offer all the powers, experience, and track record of a fully regulated bank,” de Vera said.

“At the heart of our work will always be the desire to provide our customers with what they want and what they need, while ensuring that they have what they need in terms of security, compliance with regulation, and proper governance," de Vera added.

In terms of what customers can expect from the Bank and its subsidiaries in 2022, some of the things that Aguda and de Vera gave a sneak preview of were the Bank's possible foray into non-fungible tokens (NFTs), several new solutions aimed at helping workers in the thriving gig economy through EON, and participating in the growing interest and opportunities relating to the metaverse, just to name a few.

UnionBank Chief Marketing Officer Albert Cuadrante capped off the event with a promise that the Bank will continue to do even better in 2022 in terms of delivering great customer experience across channels and platforms. He also reiterated that "UnionBank’s goal is not just to help people survive, but to actually enable them to thrive in this new environment through the latest financial technologies; staying true to our commitment to “Tech-up Pilipinas!”

"I hope you are as eager as I am to welcome 2022. What I can promise you is that what you heard today is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s a lot more exciting news you can look forward to from UnionBank," Cuadrante concluded.

Looking Ahead with Tecno: How smartphone cameras will improve in 2022

Sensor shift stabilisation, new RGBW sensors, personalised AI algorithms, and more – here’s why your selfies and holiday photos are going to level up next year

Smartphone cameras are no longer just the most convenient option – they are quickly becoming the best one, beating traditional digital cameras with computational power and innovation.

In 2021, smartphones with multiple lens systems became mainstream. Improved sensor size and resolution mean users can capture more details and render images accurately in complex lighting conditions. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms enhanced many facets of image processing. And they’re not done. A slew of changes are coming in 2022, as smartphone manufacturers push the envelope.

What are the trends that will drive this change? At a recent webinar, Global Mobile Camera Trends 2022, organised by Counterpoint Research, experts from TECNO, Samsung, and DXOMARK Image Labs, discussed some of the key trends we are likely to see in the coming year – and what we will soon be holding in our hands.

Dual OIS: Staying steady

Not getting the sharp images you wanted of your vacation views? Blurry and shaky photos are a common experience with most smartphone users, and are especially pronounced in low-light conditions as the shutter stays open longer to capture more light.

Smartphone manufacturers counter this issue through Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) technology, where the lens "floats" inside the camera assembly. The OIS system stabilises the image or video by "shifting" the lens to counter the shakes.

OIS technology is improving every year, with larger degrees of movement being taken on by the camera stabiliser. According to Jimmy Hsu, senior product manager, image technology, TECNO, pre-2019 the trend was for OIS to be about one degree of stabilisation. According to Hsu, in 2021, standard stabilisation has increased to three degrees thanks to pan-tilt OIS.

In 2022, the company aims to introduce the first Android phone with sensor shift. “Compared to conventional Optical Imaging Stabilisation, TECNO’s sensor shift technology can achieve a response frequency of 5,000 adjustments per second,” Hsu said at the webinar. By combining lens shifting seen in conventional OIS systems and the newer sensor shift technology, TECNO is setting its sights on stabilisation up to five degrees.

High-resolution sensors with pixel binning: Balancing resolution and light sensitivity

Presenting trends in camera resolution, Tarun Pathak, director of research, smartphone, Counterpoint Research, said about 40% of all smartphones in Q2 of 2021 had 48-64 megapixel (MP) sensors, and 3% of all smartphones had 108 MP sensors. According to Pathak, smartphones with 200 MP sensors are likely to launch in 2022.

Sensors with a high pixel count tend to capture more details from the scene. However, the size of pixels on such sensors is usually smaller. “The smaller the pixel, the less light you can capture in each pixel, and the harder it is to get a good image quality in darker environments,” said Pan Xuebao, VP and head of R&D, Samsung Electronics.

However, sensor manufacturers such as Samsung are deploying an algorithm-driven technique called pixel binning that enables high-resolution sensors (with a small pixel size) to perform better in low-light conditions. “Just like our human eye will dilate when we are in a darker environment to let in more light, similarly, in low light conditions, our algorithm will automatically put the sensor in high sensitivity mode,” Xuebao said. In this mode, the smaller individual pixels ‘combine’ and act like bigger pixels. This mode is turned off in brighter conditions.

Continuous optical zoom: Closer to the action

Phones are getting sleeker, but these aesthetics can be a technological challenge. This trend is presenting more of a challenge for manufacturers as they try to incorporate bulky telephoto lenses. Such technologies, such as periscope lenses which use innovative positioning to allow for 5x or 10x optical zoom, started appearing in smartphones during 2021.

The next step is to offer continuous optical zoom, which will allow users to shift between different focal lengths smoothly. This requires precise movement of lenses within small spaces without affecting image quality.

At the webinar, Hsu predicted the market could see continuous optical zoom in the second half of 2022, allowing users to shift between 3x to 5x optical zoom. Driven by advances such as long-stroke motor development and Active Optical Alignment, we could even see 3x to 10x zoom in 2023, he said.RGBW Sensors: Let there be (more) light

Cat photos not up to the mark? It could be down to the lighting. Indoor environments have less than ideal light conditions. Yet, that’s where people usually take most of their photographs.

“[A solution to] low light is the holy grail of mobile photography,” said Hervé Macudzinski, image science director and product owner of DXOMARK Image Labs, which tests camera, audio, display and battery quality. “This is one [aspect] that can lead to disappointing quality. In low light, users capture portrait photos, pictures of family, pets and so on. So there is a lot of challenge in this use case.”

While smartphone manufacturers use different techniques to enhance low-light performance, RGBW technology addresses the issue at the sensor level.

The camera sensor captures colour information through a mechanism called the Colour Filter Array (CFA). Traditional camera sensors use CFAs arranged in the Bayer format, which comprises a pattern of Red (R), Green (G), and Blue (B) filters. RGBW sensors add White (W) filters to the mix.

According to Hsu, adding white pixels increases light sensitivity by 60%, which means the sensor should be able to absorb more light. Smartphone manufacturers are also developing Glass+Plastic lens technology - many smartphone lenses are constructed out of plastic, but introducing glass elements into the lens construction improves transmission of light. “With the combination of both, the result is an overall 200% increase of light-intake,” Hsu said.

The low-light performance of smartphones looks set to improve as these two technologies appear on smartphones in 2022.

Localised algorithms: Using AI to personalise portraits

As cameras improve, we can see ourselves more clearly. New technologies allow our portraits to be more accurate, especially for people of colour.

While hardware enhancements are essential, smartphone software is playing a more significant role in determining the final image or video quality of these portraits. “We need to have very good processing – that is, to understand what the user’s intention was and modify the image adequately,” Macudzinski said.

That’s why some smartphone manufacturers use big data and deep neural networks to drive personalised and localised image processing. For instance, TECNO’s TAIVOS signal processing technology recognises and accurately reproduces dark skin elements. According to Hsu, the company uses a large dark skin database to “produce more than 6,120 Evaluation Scenarios spanning 115 countries”.

For portrait photography, the AI engine recognises and classifies different elements such as faces and hair colour to determine the subject's age, gender, and skin tone. The photo is then optimised for better clarity, colour, and light, which helps with more accurate reproduction of darker skin tones – even in low-light environments.

Scene, light, and colour enhancement: Behind every subject is a background

It’s not just the subject of a photo that matters – it's what’s behind them. Whether it’s the sun or a beautiful view, smartphone cameras are adapting to capturing these details better.

With traditional photography, professional photographers use their experience and training to make adjustments that highlight not just the subject but also background scene elements. They also typically spend significant time in post-production that brings images to life.

“Smartphone cameras need to provide all these capabilities in the default mode,” Macudzinski said. “That means the final smartphone user does not have to think through everything. They just have to press the button.”

That’s where AI-driven image processing comes in. According to Counterpoint Research’s whitepaper, AI is becoming advanced enough to recognise dynamic scene elements such as trees or sky in the background. Once identified, the image-processing system optimises their colour, contrast, and exposure.

AI will also help interpret light information. For instance, if a user is shooting against the sun, the algorithm works to underexpose the sun and brighten the subject. Smartphone manufacturers are also working on software-based solutions to correct distortions caused by wide-angle lenses.

Time of flight and dynamic vision sensors: Getting a sense of depth

Photos with sharply rendered foreground and blurred background can make for a pleasing effect – especially while shooting portraits. However, to do this, the smartphone must recognise depth and subject edges.

With Time of Flight (ToF) and Dynamic Vision Sensors (DVS) improving, smartphones will get better at generating 3D models of the scene and detecting edges. This will allow for more precise measurements and offer users features such as. enhanced and gradual blurring of backgrounds.

“ToF and DVS could be the opportunities where mobile phone cameras start to outperform (DSLR) cameras,” Hsu said.

A brighter, more intelligent 2022

These trends point to technology growing more intricate and catering to diverse use cases – whether that’s through personalised portrait rendition, stable imaging or allowing users to zoom in to the action.

However, the advancements will not be defined just by cutting-edge features on pricey smartphones. It’s a win across budget tiers - the developments result not just in technological advancement, but also trickle-down premium features to smartphones in the low and medium price bands. With the way smartphone cameras are levelling up, the best moments of your life will be remembered more clearly than ever.

Looking ahead with TECNO

Colonel Natee Sukonrat, Ph.D., Vice-Chairman of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, addressed the NBTC’s support of the Project by saying that “The NBTC, as the regulatory body of broadcasting and telecommunications businesses, has a key mission for licensing frequencies to accommodate high speed wireless communications in the 5G era, to promote the national telecommunications infrastructure development, and introduce the extension and utilization of technologies to various sectors. This is in line with the government’s policy after the National 5G Committee resolved to approve the pioneer Smart Hospital project as a prototype project for 5G application and foresaw the potential of Siriraj Hospital – equipped with specialists and fully-integrated medical equipment – as being instrumental in development into a smart hospital to produce apparent results.”

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Siriraj Hospital and Huawei have established long-term cooperation in 5G technology development and application. In June 2020, Siriraj Hospital cooperated with Huawei Thailand to launch 5G self-driving vehicles for contactless delivery of medical supplies. In December 2020, Huawei signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding with Siriraj Hospital to accelerate the intelligent operation of Siriraj Hospital using digital technologies such as 5G, including patient monitoring, diagnosis, and data collection, and provide technical training for doctors in the hospital. In 2020, Siriraj won the award from CommunicAsia Awards in the category of Most Innovative 5G Trial in Asia Pacific Region.”

This cross-sector collaboration will enhance and upgrade the services of Siriraj Hospital to progress it to become a smart medical center using digital technologies based on 5G, AI, Big Data infrastructure, and Cloud Edge processing for the purpose of patient tracking, disease diagnosis by AI on Cloud, data storage and analysis, and allocation of resources – all of which will help pave the way to fulfill the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital’s vision to become the “Medical Institute of the Nation, a Creator of Global Citizen Wellbeing”, and a Smart Hospital model for other hospitals in Thailand.

Check out Keri Boss, your new, reliable delivery partner for the holiday

The holiday season is the busiest time of the year for many SMEs. As soon as the ‘ber months come around, orders start pouring in, from food orders for get-togethers and the annual Noche Buena, to gifts for giving to friends and loved ones. Finding the right partners is the key to managing the holiday rush, especially when you run your business with just a small team or on your own. Experience Easy Deliveries With Keri Boss

Businesses that have chosen Keri Boss as their delivery partner can attest to the convenience and reliability of their service, and their riders. One such company, which has been using Keri Boss since October 2020, is the Azuthai Milky Way Restaurant Group.

Azuthai and Milky Way accept orders for delivery through their website, and via calls and text messages sent to the restaurants. According to their General Manager and Owner, Malu Gamboa, one of the biggest challenges they encounter in fulfilling these orders is the clustering of addresses, and scheduling of riders.

When asked what she likes the most about having Keri as a delivery partner, she replied, “They have a system to cluster deliveries efficiently, as well as many rider contacts to fulfill our requirements. We are in touch by Viber, and they reply promptly.”

Malou also said that she would recommend Keri to other entrepreneurs, particularly to those in the restaurant business like herself.
