A.S. Watson has been committed to tackling climate change

As the world’s largest international health and beauty retailer, A.S. Watson has been committed to reducing its business’ environmental impact and tackling climate change. It has already achieved its previous greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets by the end of 2021 and now further announces new targets to accelerate its contribution to the fight against the climate change.

In 2019, A.S. Watson released a GHG emissions reduction target to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions by 40% by 2030, from a 2015 baseline. Racing ahead of schedule, it has already overshot this target and achieved 42% by the end of 2021. With such significant progress, now A.S. Watson announces new emissions reduction targets. These include:

1. Reducing Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50% by 2030 from a 2018 baseline
2. Reducing Scope 3 GHG Emissions from purchased goods and services, upstream transportation, and distribution by 58% per dollar economic value added by 2030 from a 2018 baseline
3. Pledging that 33% of its suppliers by emissions covering purchased goods and services, upstream transportation and distribution will have science-based targets (SBTs) by 2027

Malina Ngai, Group Chief Operating Officer of A.S. Watson and CEO of A.S. Watson (Asia and Europe),says: “At A.S. Watson, we made it our purpose to do the right things for our customers and the planet today and tomorrow. Sustainability is a hurdle race. It takes determination and perseverance to get over barriers. We can’t do it alone. We believe partnerships with our suppliers and customers can make bigger impact together.”

“These new GHG emissions reduction targets are proof of our commitment to accelerate our sustainability efforts to build a better world for all.” she adds. “On top of our actions to fight climate change, we’ve also reinforced our commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), extending our coverage to 15 out of 17 UNSDGs which include the usage of clean energy and the introduction of climate actions.”

Kicking Off with Greener Stores

A.S. Watson understands that everything starts with its stores so Greener Stores Global Framework was just launched in April to accelerate its own transformation of retail towards lower-environmental impact stores. It hopes to leverage on its scale for good to speed up the global movement towards a more sustainable future.

Since 74% of the company’s GHG emissions were attributable to electricity consumption in 2021, creating efficient electricity grids is now a top priority for A.S. Watson. Enhancing energy efficiency and using renewable energy are thus two key focuses of the Greener Stores Global Framework. To support this mission, a global energy management programme was established since 2014 to monitor local energy saving initiatives.

Supporting the growth of green energy is just as important to reduce GHG emissions. A.S. Watson has already achieved 100% renewable electricity for its businesses in three major European markets. These include Superdrug, Savers, The Perfume Shop, KruidvatTrekpleister and ICI PARIS XL in the UK, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Renewable electricity now makes up 86% of A.S. Watson’s European portfolio.

Going Green with Our Customers

A.S. Watson has always been at the forefront of promoting and inspiring a culture of sustainability amongst its customers. Through the operations of its everyday retail stores, it has always encouraged customers to choose more sustainable products and a greener lifestyle. A.S. Watson believes that The New Beautiful is more than just skin deep, and is about how people treat themselves, do good to each other as well as the planet.

To celebrate the World Environment Day, Watsons plans to launch a first-of-its-kind Sustainability VR Hub in the markets including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam and Turkey in order to promote and motivate its customers to make behavioral changes that would contribute to a more sustainable planet. It will offer customers an immersive virtual reality (VR) experience to help them learn more about how they can help the environment and how to fight against climate change.

Ngai concludes, “The Future is Now. As a leader in the health and beauty retail industry, we want to lead by example in minimising our impact on our planet, engagingand educating our customers, and inspiring our business partners to make the world a better place together. We believe that every small and big step we are taking now will make a huge impact in the future.”

A.S. Watson has released its 2021 Sustainability Report which outlines its sustainability efforts and achievements. It has not only been working to build greener stores but also create a culture of sustainability inside and outside the organisation. As we are now living a new normal, the report also outlines A.S. Watson’s global efforts to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in the past two years and how it’s ready to put a smile on its customers’ faces today and tomorrow.

Health advocates gathered to call for better cancer care in the Philippines

Health advocates gathered to call for better cancer care in the Philippines through a candle-lighting ceremony held last March 10 at the Greenbelt Activity Area in Makati City.

A multi-sectoral group composed of members from the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry led by the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Association of the Philippines (PHAP) in collaboration with MSD, recently came together for a landmark event titled Hope Matters: Lighting A Path for Better Cancer Care to ask for the implementation of the Universal Healthcare Law (UHC) and the National Integrated Cancer Control Act (NICCA).

Advocates from various organizations gathered to light a path towards better cancer care at an event held last March 10 at Greenbelt 3. (From Left:  Philippine Alliance of Patient Organizations President Fatima “Girlie” Lorenzo; Program Host Jing Castaneda; Patient Advocate Jojo Flores; MSD Philippines Market Access and Corporate Affairs Director Michael Andrew Blanch; MSD Philippines President and Managing Director Andreas Riedel; Cancer Commission Philippine College of Surgeons Director Dr. Ramy Roxas; Singer/Actor Marlo Mortel; MSD Philippines Business Unit Director Oncology Allan Ancheta; Department of Health Program Manager Dr. Clar Cairo; Greenbelt 3 Mall Senior Marketing Associate Manager Natasha Faustino; PHAP Executive Director Ted Padilla; Philippine Society of Medical Oncology President Dr. Arnold John Uson; National Council on Disability Affairs Executive Director Engr. Emer Rojas; and UHC Policy Development Senior Vice President Dr. Israel Pargas)

The activity was attended by stakeholders who want to push for better cancer care, including Department of Health (DOH), Philippine Society of Medical Oncology (PSMO), Philippine College of Surgeons- Cancer Commission (PCS-CANCOM), Philippine Alliance of Patient Organizations (PAPO), MSD and Astra Zeneca. Aside from the symbolic gesture of lighting candles for cancer awareness, they launched a call for action through an online petition that is addressed to the National Government. Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality in the country. According to the 2018 Global Data on Cancer, more than 140,000 new cancer cases and more than 80,000 cancer deaths are expected in the Philippines every year. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Filipinos, followed by lung, colon, liver, and prostate1. A study conducted by the University of the Philippines’ Institute of Human Genetics, National Institutes of Health, finds that 89 of every 100,000 Filipinos are afflicted with cancer while four Filipinos die of cancer every hour2.

The provisions of the NICCA, which was passed in 2019, will help mitigate the impact of cancer in the country. It ensures the provision of quality health services and financial risk protection to cancer patients. It emphasizes cancer prevention and improvement of survivorship, by improving related health services and care while including additional funding for cancer programs.

Cancer survivor Jojo Flores explained the added challenges that patients have to overcome in order to receive their much-needed treatment, “For cancer patients, it is collision of the two big C’s -- Cancer and Covid. The treatment for cancer patients is time-bound, but because of the Covid situation, many have not been able to receive their treatments. Hospitals and doctors had to focus on CoVID-19 cases, and even transporting the patient to the hospital was a problem.” he said. Mr. Flores added that although NICCA may take time to implement in its totality, there are aspects of the law that can already help save many lives, especially with early detection.

Flores is calling specific NICCA provisions to be implemented as soon as possible. These are:

1. The immediate classification of cancer patients as Persons with Disabilities PWDs as soon as formally diagnosed.

2. Mandatory cancer policies in the workplace.

3. The inclusion of innovative therapies among cancer treatments aimed at treating the disease and improve the patient’s quality of life; and

4. Coordinated cancer screening and detection programs at the community levels.

During the forum, one of the points raised by PHAP Director Mr. Teodoro Padilla was the need for public support and private partnerships to enhance better cancer care. He added that as the government implements measures to make medicines more accessible, it is important to address certain bottlenecks to make treatments that are available in other countries also accessible for Filipino patients.

The healthcare and pharmaceutical sector is extending its help not only in the call for the government’s implementation of the NICCA, through initiatives such as Hope From Within by MSD Philippines. The cancer advocacy program introduced the Cancer Game Plan, a health impact projection model that uses local data sets to uncover cancer outcomes and highlight how innovative treatment options such as immunotherapy may provide cancer patients quality of life and improve their overall survival.

Andreas Riedel, President and Managing Director and the Country Leadership Team of MSD in the Philippines, expressed hope that the event will result in meaningful progress for the fight against cancer.

“Cancer patients and their families are not alone in this fight. We at MSD are one with the community in championing a multi-stakeholder approach to promote information, education, and access to quality cancer care. Through Hope Matters: Lighting a Path for Better Cancer Care, we commit to continue doing our part in amplifying the voice of the Filipino Cancer patient and help usher them towards more hopeful tomorrows.”

To sign the petition for the full implementation of the NICCA, visit change.org: https://www.change.org/p/department-of-health-sign-the-petition-to-fully-implement-the-national-integrated-cancer-control-act-nicca-now, and help more cancer patients receive quality and holistic healthcare services with the help of the government. REALME C35 REVIEW: BRING ON THE BLING

realme’s newest entry-level smartphone is one of its best-looking yet.

Chic and classy are not the usual terms used to describe an entry-level smartphone, but with the arrival of realme’s Philippines latest addition to its C-series lineup, those adjectives have never been more fitting.

There was a time when it was very easy to spot entry-level phones--they were bulky, plasticky and the design looked like something that arrived a few years too late.

In contrast, the realme C35, stands out with its modern, squared-off look, glasstic back and unique glow colorways.

But is it more than just a fancy-looking phone?

Here is our unboxing and first impressions of the realme C35.

I have always been a fan of the realme C-series because it always hit the sweet spot between performance and price. But if there was one issue I’ve had with the series is that it doesn’t always stand out in terms of its looks.

So when realme sent their latest device for review, I really wasn’t expecting much in terms of its design.

I was wrong.

Since I didn’t go on the web to see how it looks, I was thinking “Glowing Green” was going to be a similar color to that of the realme 9 series. So when my partner and I unboxed it we both gasped when we took it out from the plastic wrap. It was gorgeous. I didn’t just love the color---I adored it. It may just be my fave realme color of all--for now.

realme’s maketing campaign for this smartphone is “Chic and Classy,” so does it mean the C35 is all about looks? Read more to find out.

@lola_lamon Look how chic and classy my new @realme Philippines C35 is. Watch until the end of the unboxing #realmec35 #realmeph #chicandclassy #fyp #fy ♬ Dancing In The Moonlight - Instrumental - Naimai

UNBOXING:

The phone comes in realme’s tradmark yellow box. Unlike the redesigned box of the realme 9 series,  it retains the same look as its predecessors.

Inside the box you’ll find the “Welcome to the realme family” greeting and the compartment which stores the  SIM ejector tool and some paper documentation. Underneath is the realme C35 unit, and at the bottom is a 18W charging adapter and USB-A to USB-C charging cable. The screen protector is already preinstalled on the unit.

It doesnt include a pair of earphones or a silicone case--something you should really get.

BUILD AND DESIGN

Okay, there’s no other way to put it. The realme C35 looks a lot like one of those recent competitors Phones--and that alone is a big reason to choose it over the competition.

The phone is made of a combination two “glasstic” panels with a polycarbonate frame thats made to look like metal. The sides of the phone are flat with rounded edges. The glasstic back has a clear and reflective finish which makes it prone to fingerprints and smudges and can be quite slippery. This is why I suggest you get a case to protect your phone and make it a bit easier to hold.  The phone comes in a 8.1mm Ultra Slim Design, the thinnest and lightest in the C-Series as it weighs only 189 grams making it very easy to use with one hand.

The realme C35 comes with a screen-to-body ratio of 90.7%, with an almost bezel-less design. Paired

with the aesthetics of the Dynamic Glowing Design, which gives off an effect when reflected on by

light, the realme C35 allows for a visual experience.

It comes in two colors; Glowing Black, and the one we have is the Glowing Green which more like “mint” and it is unlike any color we’ve seen in a smartphone. It will also be available in two variants 4GB+64GB and 4GB+128GB variants.

Exploring the ports and button placements, on the right you’ll find the power button, which also acts as a fingerprint scanner.

Located on the left is the SIM tray (two nanoSIM cards and a dedicated microSD card slot) and volume rocker, while on the bottom is the USB-C charging port, along with the speaker grille, microphone, and 3.5mm headphone jack.

To guarantee its quality the phone has undergone and passed the rigorous TÜV Rheinland Smartphone High-Reliability Certification.

Overall, I like the design, color and build of the C35.

DISPLAY AND SOUND

Checking out the display, the realme C35 has  a 6.6-inch IPS panel with a FHD 2408 x 1080 resolution which is  unlike most smartphones in the same price segment. This means you get a clearer more colorful and immersive viewing experience. In addition the realme C35 maxes at up to 480 nits of brightness in normal lighting conditions, and up to 600 nits on auto under direct sunlight making the screen still quite visible.  For gamers, the touch-sampling rate of 180Hz for better touch responsiveness is worth noting.

Now for the sound,  the realme C35 has  a single downward-firing speaker, which does the job but could get easily distorted at max volume. Limiting it to 70percent might be the ideal level but it may sound too soft especially if you are outside or in a noisy area. So its best to have your favorite pair of earphones or external speakers for a better multimedia experience. For voice calls though using the loudspeakers are okay.

CAMERA

realme has done wonders for its smartphone cameras in the last couple of years and I’d say the C35 proves that a good quality camera doesn’t need to be expensive. It has a 50MP AI Triple Camera which includes a 50MP primary camera partnered with two other lenses, a f/2.8 B&W for portrait shots and a f/2.4 macro lens from up to 4cm to cater other mobile photography needs.

The main camera delivers nice details especially in well-lit situations and outdoor shots during the daytime are social media and vlog ready even without editing. Videos can be recorded at up to 1080p/30FPS (without stabilization) which is par for the course within this segment.

Like other smartphones at this price point though,  the camera does struggle when the lights go low. You’ll notice lesser details and photos tend to look washed out a bit with some noise. They are still usable though and NightMode does help a bit to boost brightness.

As for the front camera, the 8-megapixel Sony IMX355 selfie shooter you get the same output. Photos taken in good lighting are impressive while the loss of details are evident even when using the screen as a flash. Faces look a bit on the yellow side but you can easily edit it with the pre-installed photo editor.

PERFORMANCE AND BATTERY

The realme C35 is controlled by a Unisoc Tiger 616 (T616) processor with an octa-core processor clocked at a maximum of 2.0GHz, a Mali-G57 GPU, along with 4GB of RAM and up to 128GB of internal storage.

Its not the usual processor I usually read about, but so far after using it the past few weeks, I’d say it works great for all the basic tasks I usually do and that’s social media uploads, web browsing, checking emails and a few casual tita games.

When it comes to multitasking, I did notice a bit of lag, but its not something that’s frustrating. So I do suggest you close those apps you aren’t using.

As for the battery, it has a 5000mAh battery that is slighly smaller than the C25 but it lasted me for an entire day of blog coverage with still a bit of juice left. You also get an 18W Quick Charge adaptor to help it charge faster.  In terms of storage, the realme C35 is expandable to 256GB via micro-SD Card--which is spacious enough to store all your photos and videos.

REALME C35: VERDICT

For its minty color and iPhone-ish design alone the realme C35 is an easy recommendation for those who need to follow a strict budget. If you are looking for an affordable everyday smartphone, the realme C35 a is mighty impressive choice.  It delivers a pretty good main camera,  reliable performance and again deceivingly stylish design that makes it look more pricey than its actual tag.

Available in two colors: Glowing Black and Glowing Green, the realme C35 is now available for an SRP of only P8,499 for the 4GB+64GB variant, and P9,499 for the 4GB+128GB variant.

In celebration of Philippine Independence Day, leading online job portal JobStreet, in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), launches its week-long Virtual Career Fair happening on June 13 to 17 in an effort to provide various employment opportunities to the Filipino workforce.

This collaboration is also a means to empower jobseekers and celebrate the freedom that they have in choosing a career path that fits their lifestyle and priorities.

JobStreet affirms the country is experiencing “The Great Reshuffle,” a phase where employees leave their jobs in search of more fulfilling roles that provide the flexibility they are looking for. According to their 2021 Global Talent Survey, 67% of Filipino employees have chosen to prioritize their health and well-being over work.

Additionally, 53% of employees would prefer keeping a remote work set-up even if it entails additional 10 hours of extra work per week, and 41% would accept a lower salary as long as they can move to a more affordable location.

“Employees have many things to consider whether a job is worth it or not. Jobseekers are now taking their time to reassess not only their careers but their personal life. That is why, as a career partner, we aim to provide a venue where applicants can have the liberty to decide on which role they wish to pursue,” added JobStreet Philippines Marketing Head Kim Viray.
