Oppa Gangnam Style hit one billion views less than six months after release

In 2012, music video history was forever changed after Psy’s smash hit “Gangnam Style” hit one billion views less than six months after release. It was the first music video to ever do so on YouTube, establishing YouTube’s Billion Views Club (BVC).

With over 4.4 billion views on the video to date, Psy demonstrated the immense power that music videos on YouTube have in connecting artists with their fans around the world, while inspiring others to reach record-breaking milestones of their own.

“Being the first artist to reach 1 billion views on YouTube was an extraordinary feeling 10 years ago and it still is today. To have played a role in paving the way for the music of all kinds to transcend borders is a true honor,” said the singer.

Getting to a billion is no easy feat at the time as it took over a year for another music video to match the achievement — Justin Bieber’s hit “Baby” — but 10 years later YouTube’s Billion Views Club has grown to include some of the most iconic music videos that have stood the test of time and made an impression on viewers worldwide.

"It's easy to forget just how big a billion really is. If released pre-internet, while it's not the only metric for timelessness, it means the music has traveled through time and the fandom came with it and evolved,” said Ryan Thornton, Head of Catalog Music, YouTube.

Achieving the billion views milestone on YouTube remains nothing short of extraordinary and as part of the celebration of the tenth year of the Billion Views Club, the platform created a BVC custom YouTube logo to adorn the videos that made the cut.

Members of the BVC include Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito ft. Daddy Yankee” which remains the most viewed music video at more than 7 billion views, BLACKPINK’s “How You Like That,” Drake’s “Hotline Bling,” a-ha’s “Take On Me,” Shakira’s “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again ft. Charlie Puth,” Katy Perry’s “Roar,” Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow,” Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters,” Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk (Official Video) ft. Bruno Mars,” Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy,” and the club’s most recent entry with BVC first-timer Coolio for his ‘90s hit “Gangsta’s Paradise”.

J Balvin and Justin Bieber are tied for the most billion views with 11 official music videos each. English crooner Adele, meanwhile, holds the distinction of the fastest entry to the club after “Hello” reached the milestone in just 88 days.

It’s not only the new hits that make the cut as the club’s most recent entry is Coolio for the 90’s hit “Gangsta Paradise.” Rock legends Guns N’ Roses defied decades with the 80’s classic “Sweet Child of Mine” and 90’s hit “November Rain” reaching a billion views recently.

“The Billion Views Club represents the diverse mix of global sounds and voices that have helped make YouTube the home of music,” said Kevin Meenan, YouTube Music Trends Manager. "The list serves as a reminder of the power of the visual pairing with a great song, with the music video – alongside features like Premieres and Shorts -- serving as the ultimate way for artists to share their art and vision directly with fans."

For 15+ years YouTube has been home to music videos and so much more. The platform recently introduced  Premieres: Live Redirect, Trailers, Countdown Themes, Shorts, and other product innovations that have enhanced the video experience for artists and fans alike.

Entrepreneurs reported that it took an average of two failed business ideas to find the one that worked

What are the traits of successful entrepreneurs? Is it guts, willpower, or the ability to raise capital? According to a global survey, 89% of respondents say that in order to be successful, leaders must make mistakes, learn, and grow from those lessons learned.

Conducted by OnePoll and commissioned by Herbalife Nutrition for National Small Business Week, the international study surveyed 8,000 small business owners and employees across 15 countries, including 4,000 respondents from eight countries in the Asia Pacific region. The study asked respondents to share lessons they learned through workplace mishaps. These insights from entrepreneurs teaches valuable lessons for anyone who owns or plans to own a business.

Fail Fast

Entrepreneurs reported that it took an average of two failed business ideas to find the one that worked. While failing is difficult and discouraging, entrepreneurs shared that making mistakes helped them learn, grow, and succeed in their future endeavors. The key is to learn and, ideally, avoid them in the future. Almost 90% of small business owners said they learned valuable lessons from each unsuccessful venture.

Be Productive

The importance of entrepreneurs learning to be productive is high on the list of lessons. Over 40% of small business owners said that productivity was critical to success. Many entrepreneurs previously worked for companies where deadlines were set by others. Suddenly becoming a boss can be daunting for owners, and many find themselves overwhelmed with work and less productive at first. The old adage “one step at a time” applies to productivity. Set attainable goals for yourself and see each task through to completion.

Get Organized

The survey asked small business owners what advice they would give to someone just starting a business, and the top tip was to get and stay organized (42%). Documents should be easy to access and marked, whether they are stored digitally or on your desk. Another way to organize your workday is to make a list of your tasks and prioritize those that must be completed. Color-coding items—for example, red for urgent, blue for today, and yellow for later completion—help many owners identify hot activities. Set a timer to dedicate yourself to each task before taking a break. Knowing you have time constraints and something to look forward to can help you complete tasks faster.

Learn to Prioritize

Over 30% of global respondents believe that learning to prioritize work is critical. But how? Since our school days, we have been instructed to make lists and set deadlines. Many business owners make lists and then become overwhelmed by their workload. Instead of focusing on completion, they procrastinate. Aside from making lists, entrepreneurs must understand what tasks are essential to complete, and why. What items are essential each day for your business to succeed? For example, if your inventory is low, ordering goods is a top priority. Perhaps sales calls are next on your to-do list to keep the business in the black. Allow at least 30 minutes per day to express appreciation to customers and partners. Giving thanks for a business referral or a large order is critical to the growth of your company.

Never Stop Learning

Entrepreneurs see that ongoing learning is essential for innovation and the development of new ideas. More than a quarter believe that continuing education is the secret sauce that helps business owners stay on top of their game. With so much to do in a day, how do entrepreneurs fit training into their schedule? Articles can be read and events can be attended during breaks or evenings thanks to more content being available on demand. Reading various news stories, as well as reviewing industry blogs and research, can help you come up with new ideas to keep you and your business fresh. Keep a "spark list" near your workspace where you can jot down thoughts and ideas that will help you grow.

Learning from mistakes makes us stronger—especially business owners. Understanding setting priorities, being productive and organized, aids entrepreneurs in staying on task and on schedule. Keeping up with the industry can help you generate ideas to help you manage your work and succeed in business.

Collecting and melding disjointed individual pieces into one creates a large presence and power. I created this design thinking that if everyone could transmit even tiny pieces of positive energy in their own way, then the world would move in a better direction.

As a collage artist, he has collaborated with a variety of artists and held solo and group exhibitions throughout Japan and internationally. Shingo Kunieda

Whenever I play wheelchair tennis in different places around the world, I am always struck by the power of sports that enables us to mutually respect and challenge other players and enjoy the vocal support from the crowd, unfettered by national borders. I hope as many people as possible get to experience the wonder of sharing emotions when watching or playing sports themselves. That desire inspired me to participate in this project.

Professional wheelchair tennis player / The king and pioneer of wheelchair tennis. He has the record being the first wheelchair tennis player to complete a Grand Slam. He has earned 4 gold medals at the Paralympics, 28 Grand Slam Singles titles, and 21 Doubles titles.

He established the Adam Scott Foundation in 2005, providing education opportunities for children and young people.

Hana Tajima

I wanted to create a design that would represent how we are all connected to the earth and to each other. Our own joy also contains the joy of others. When we bring peace to others, we can also bring peace to ourselves. And when we are all free to be joyful, the world is a more colorful, and a more abundant place.

Designer / UK-born fashion designer, Hana Tajima is changing the way women dress all over the world. Her contemporary, functional designs, which are both culturally sensitive and extremely versatile, continue garnering international attention.

Kei Nishikori

What can I do? The first thing that springs to mind is to put my all into PLAYing tennis and to enjoy it. I want to give hope to as many people as I can and encourage their dreams by determining to play my very best and always remembering to enjoy tennis. I hope that my tennis and everyone else’s PLAY will put a smile on more people’s faces.

I’ve interacted with people from different countries through snowboarding and skateboarding since I was a child and I’ve learned a lot. It's great that you can enjoy an exciting session with a single board, regardless of what country you are from. Times like that make me wish we could all live our daily lives without forgetting to respect each other.

Professional Snowboarder, Skateboarder / Olympic snowboarding, and skateboarding star. At 15, he became the youngest Japanese medalist ever at the Winter Olympics. Gold medalist for snowboarding at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

Gordon Reid

I’ve told myself to "never stop challenging" ever since I started playing wheelchair tennis. I would consider it as an honor if my efforts and my passion helped to motivate others and inspired them to continue pushing themselves in the face of challenges in life. It is with this in mind that I have decided to participate in this project.

Christophe Lemaire

This design's combination of the peace symbol of the dove with two hands expresses our desire to “care.” If we want peace for all, we must question our lifestyles and materialistic values. This means we need to relearn how to care for the planet. With time, we can protect biodiversity and create decent, sustainable living conditions. This change is possible. It is just a matter of good will.

Designer / Christophe Lemaire has been designing his namesake collection since 1991. He has also served as Artistic Director of Lacoste and Artistic Director of women’s ready-to-wear at Hermès. In 2015, he partnered with UNIQLO, resulting in the UNIQLO AND LEMAIRE collaboration collections for Fall/Winter 2015 and Spring/Summer 2016. Plan International

But this is often suppressed by poverty, violence, exclusion, and discrimination. And, it’s girls who are most affected. Working together with children, young people, our supporters, and partners, we strive for a just world, tackling the root causes of the challenges facing girls and all vulnerable children.

UNIQLO continues to actively seek out leaders in their fields who support PEACE FOR ALL and invite them to create charity T-shirts to be sold around the world. T-shirts are wonderful items that allow the wearer to express their thoughts and ideas and set themselves apart from others. UNIQLO will carry on pursuing measures for the project, aiming to make the world just a little bit better, and help ensure a peaceful future in which all people can live in safety.
