foodpanda pledges support to MSMEs

Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) continue to be the backbone of the Philippine economy, comprising a vast majority of local businesses. As the country continues to move towards a post-pandemic world, this sector remains vulnerable and requires support from the public and private sector.

Among the companies pledging support is leading quick-commerce platform provider foodpanda, who made the commitment at the sidelines of the recent GO Negosyo MSME Summit 2022. For this year’s edition of the annual summit, organized by GO Negosyo founder Joey Concepcion, the theme was on the digitalization of MSMEs, including the usage of and support coming from digital platforms.

As the country’s leading online quick commerce platform, foodpanda has thousands of partner merchants and shops in their food delivery and grocery services, a majority of which are MSMEs. “The use of digital technologies is here to stay even in the post-pandemic world, so businesses across industries – particularly small and medium enterprises – should learn how to adapt in order to survive. That’s where we can come in and help,” said Daniel Marogy, foodpanda Philippines Managing Director.

In the Philippines, more than 99% of enterprises are MSMEs. At the Summit, Concepcion also shared that MSMEs also account for the majority of the local jobs at 63%, noting that the Philippines should capitalize on digitalization to elevate the businesses and drive robust growth in the lives of MSMEs.

“At foodpanda, a huge chunk of our vendors and merchants includes up-and-coming, high-potential small restaurants, local mom-and-pop stores, and home-based online businesses and our goal is to beef up our partnerships with them and turn that potential into reality,” foodpanda’s Managing Director assured. “Through the use of online channels, we are creating added income and revenue streams for them.”

The event was also graced by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who underscored that supporting MSMEs is among the top priorities of the current administration. Helping the government with this endeavor is the United States Embassy headed by Ambassador to the Philippines, MaryKay Carlson.

She shared in the summit that the US supports the growth of the country's digital economy and encourages more MSMEs to participate. “While the pandemic has brought plenty of challenges, many MSMEs have also discovered opportunities to improve their businesses. An encouraging trend is the rapid digital transformation of businesses and the growing move to e-commerce.”

However, while the growth of MSMEs may indicate an uptick in the economy, small businesses still face a serious problem with lack of financing and capital, which Marogy noted can be answered by digitalization. “By joining a digital platform like foodpanda, entrepreneurs with little capital will have an affordable yet competitive alternative to start their business because they can think less about the cost of rent, utility expenses, and other traditional business expenses,” he explained.

“On the other hand, stores and restaurants looking to scale further can have both a physical presence through their retail storefront and an online presence through our platform,” Marogy said. According to him, this type of evolution is the marriage of online and offline commerce.

Several digital platform services also came together at the event to emphasize the importance of MSMEs being linked to the value chains of bigger corporations, which is how their business models are designed. Marogy also supported this idea, saying that inclusion is achieved by making it possible for MSMEs to participate in the digital economy.

He mentioned how foodpanda is helping many local restaurants in the country to earn additional revenue through online channels. In the same way, he added, consumers will have access to faster and convenient delivery of their goods while delivery partners will have the opportunity to make a living. “It is an effective and helpful cycle that will continue to exist as long as digital platforms like us operate. As a platform, it is our role to bring all these sides of the market together and connect them to each other.”

Marogy also agreed with several leaders of digital platform services who are encouraging MSMEs to shift to digital channels. “MSMEs need to be present where their consumers are right now – and that is in the digital space.”

“These small local businesses can leverage existing digital platforms like us to build an online presence. As an essential quick commerce platform and digital enabler for vendors nationwide, we are here to help your business scale so that together, we can all prosper and succeed,” he added.

1Export’s entry to the Indonesian market is proof that Philippine startups are globally competitive and scalable

Many people think they need a huge amount of funding in order to open an office in another country. After only raising 860K USD,  1Export used that money to strengthen their core business, launch a logistics vertical, and open in Indonesia. The hope in the company was that if they were creative and madiskarte (street-smart) enough, they could enter Indonesia with the same 15K USD capital they started in the Philippines. And so they did.

1Export is a one-stop, end-to-end platform helping Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with their exporting needs, particularly focusing on aspects related to compliance, distribution, and logistics. Registered in 2016, 1Export has helped hundreds of SMEs export to 50 countries around the world, ranging from traditional distributors and retailers to online stores.

(Left to Right) Dominic Milan, Angelica Nepomuceno, Daniel Remo, Melissa Nava

"We were able to achieve so much with so little.  As we continue to raise more capital, just imagine how radically we will transform the cross-border trading and logistic space." Daniel Remo, COO of 1Export says.

Not everyone thought it would be possible. “How is it possible to open in a country where you did not grow up in, or you do not even know the language?”, its founders were asked several times by investors and other business partners. But despite this usual apprehension, signs were becoming more apparent that the Indonesian market might be needing a service like 1Export.  By late 2019, 1the company was invited to join Indonesia-based accelerator programs, one of which was the Gojek Xcelerate  program where they even emerged as the winner.

In Gojek, 1Export co-founder Mel Nava realized just how big the gap was for Halal products in the Philippines.  The cost of becoming Halal in the Philippines ranged anywhere from 5K USD to 10K USD, whereas in Indonesia, Halal certification only cost about 300 to 1K USD.

According to a survey by Bank DBS Indonesia, 90% of internet users in Indonesia have made purchases online which makes the country the largest market for e-commerce in Southeast Asia. The problem is that it is a market that is difficult to enter. Like the Philippines, a seller or SME would need to process basic compliance requirements such as BOPM (Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan), which is the equivalent of a Philippine FDA (Food and Drug Administration) before you can bring your goods to sell online or offline. Now with 1Export’s Indonesia office, Filipino companies can now bring their products to Indonesia without having to worry about the bureaucracy of processing the necessary compliances.

By replicating the same model they started in the Philippines, 1Export helps SMEs become compliant to the Indonesian market, find distributors, and ship products at a competitive rate. It has partnered with Envio, a digital logistics platform supporting local deliveries and warehousing across Indonesia.

In terms of bringing down the cost of Halal in the Philippines, 1Export has partnered with Muslim organizations in Indonesia.

1Export also utilizes the existing distribution channels it already has in its infrastructure, benefitting Indonesian SME’s. It has currently partnered with marketplace enablers such as Aspenku and Katsitura, helping organize SMEs across different parts of Indonesia. 1Export’s tech offers all-around exporting services such as compliance documentation, product labeling, logistics, and intensive business matching, which helps local businesses identify which of their products fit certain markets and reduces exporting time and costs by up to 80%.

1Export’s entry to the Indonesian market is proof that Philippine startups are globally competitive and scalable.

Melissa Nava, CEO of 1Export, during 1Export’s seminar for Indonesian SMEs

“Part of why we were able to open with very little money at the beginning was because there were already customers availing of our services as soon as we launched. The Philippines was a relatively challenging market to operate in. For us, if we solve the problems in the Philippines, we can also address the difficulties in more challenging markets.” Mel Nava, CEO of 1Export says.

Soon, Indonesian products will be available in over 900 Asian and mainstream market outlets and online stores. Compliance seminars for US and Saudi Arabia are being conducted on a regular basis in order for SMEs to understand the importance of shipping properly.

1 Export has also launched ShipIt, helping SMEs find cheaper and reliable shipping. With its fulfillment infrastructure in the USA and Singapore, ShipIt will support the booming Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) cross-border potential of Indonesian SMEs, the same way it is supporting Philippine SMEs.

Malayan Colleges Laguna, A Mapúa School (MCL) was granted Autonomous Status through CHED

Last 2019, Malayan Colleges Laguna, A Mapúa School (MCL) was granted Autonomous Status through CHED Memorandum Order No. 12, Series of 2019, enabling the institution to create new programs and engage in internationalization as needed by students. With this, the pioneering batch of the new program, Bachelor of Science in Psychology, under the College of Arts and Science (CAS) was launched last 2020. By June 2022, MCL added another program offering CAS, the Bachelor of Science in Biology.

Students who plan to pursue the B.S. Psychology program will be exposed to fundamental psychological concepts and practices, human behavior, mental health issues, and intellectual processes. B.S. Psychology provides an excellent foundation for scientific professions as well as advanced study in psychology or allied fields. To provide a global learning experience to all the students, MCL, through the Cintana Alliance, partnered with the most innovative university in the United States of America, Arizona State University (ASU).

B.S. Psychology, one of MCL's pre-medical programs offered under the College of Arts and Science, is designed to provide students with a solid and holistic foundation of concepts, theories, and principles in Psychology.

B.S. Biology, on the other hand, is another pre-medical school program offered in partnership with ASU. MCL’s B.S. Biology program, per CMO 49 s. 2017, is structured as a generalized framework of study with the end view of grounding students with the fundamental concepts, principles, and theories of the biological, natural, and physical sciences, and the conduct of research. This breakthrough partnership will give undergraduates a significantly unique experience built on three fundamental pillars: international exposure, real-world experience learning, and digital proficiency.

B.S. Biology is the second of MCL’s pre-medical programs offered under the College of Arts and Science. It aims to help students develop the critical thinking needed for scientific problems and research methods in the field.

MCL’s curriculum for B.S. Biology will equip students to perform professionally in a group dynamic while also developing practical knowledge that can be used for a variety of employment options. Students will obtain a worldwide perspective on how humans engage with their surroundings. They will also acquire knowledge to think critically about scientific problems and research methods utilized by scientists in their discipline or field. Students will get the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the globally competitive access to MCL’s laboratory and learn firsthand courses where they can apply their knowledge in practical situations that are often encountered by biologists in the workplace or elsewhere.

With MCL’s partnership with ASU, the students will be immersed in quality learning materials and real-world experiential learning co-designed by ASU and other industry partners. According to Dr. Reynaldo Vea, Mapúa University’s President, "Our strategic collaboration with ASU enables us to push the envelope further, by providing our students with the opportunity to learn with a top U.S university.
