Warner Bros. Discovery bagged 48 Emmy Awards

With 48 Emmy awards, Warner Bros. Discovery (Nasdaq: WBD) was the most-honoured media company at the 74^th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. HBO / HBO Max received 38 wins, CNN received 1 win, TBS received 1 win and WBTV received 8 wins. The Company earned recognition in all three Outstanding Series categories, with Successionnamed Outstanding Drama Series, Ted Lasso named Outstanding Comedy Series, and The White Lotus named Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. 

 

HBO and HBO Max earned more awards than any other network or platform, with 38 awards across shows including Succession, The White Lotus, Hacks, Euphoria, A Black Lady Sketch Show, Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

HBO’s The White Lotus was this year’s most recognized show with 10 awards. Warner Bros. Television Group’s Ted Lasso was the king of comedy with seven wins.

MSME Summit 2022 inspired Filipino entrepreneurs to dream big and scale their business

Embrace technology to make your business more efficient

Agustin, who is known for his food ventures SumoSam, Wolfgang's Steakhouse, John and Yoko, Tai Koo Hong Kong Roast, Kondwi, and Secret Kitchen among others, admitted that he loves to challenge himself. For him, it is an opportunity to learn something new and find out what works best for his business. Like many other entrepreneurs whose businesses were challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic, Agustin found himself embracing technology more. He began to use and trust it more and used it to his business’ advantages by engaging with his customers online and embracing food delivery apps as their new partner.

For Ellao who provides digital consultancy services to mostly brick and mortar businesses, the challenge wasn’t so much on adapting to technology but on encouraging her clients to also understand it and transition to it.

Having been operating an online store for more than a decade, Fernandez-Ruiz shared that while they didn’t have to adjust their online operations as much, it was coordinating their logistics that became a challenge during the pandemic. She stressed the role that technology played to sustain their production and manage collaboration and communication. “Be the kind of leader and business person who will coordinate and orchestrate this kasi kung hindi, tools lang ‘yan, hindi sya magiging useful if you don’t use them,” she said.

            Canva’s design experts conduct brand consultation to help MSMEs with their branding needs.

 

Powerful branding is also an important tool for businesses. Branding is more than just a business’ logo, it’s also the promise that brands deliver to their customers. In her virtual session, Clo Palamos, art director at Canva Philippines, highlighted the importance of branding especially for new businesses which may be competing with many other brands for their customers’ attention. The key is to treat your brand as a person and make that person relatable to others, according to her.

Some branding tools that businesses can have are their logo, brand colors, fonts and typography, and images among others. With tools like Canva, businesses can create their own style guide and streamline their branding through Brand Kit, a feature that allows businesses to build a brand from scratch or add their existing brand assets so everyone in their team can stay on brand.

In her video message, Janice Villanueva, CEO and founder of MommyMundo, encouraged the participants to always go back to the people they serve. “We ask ourselves, as a brand, how do we stay useful as a community and how do we keep exciting them? Always, always go back to the market you serve. Beyond serving their needs and wants, how can you delight them?” she said. Recognizing the many players available in the market now, Villanueva also emphasized the importance of being creative and thinking out of the box.

What Stocks do well during inflation?

Inflation affects everyone especially during these pandemic, it stems from consumer anxiety and public health restrictions. Almost everyone I know, closed down their business. When I do my grocery shopping, I was surprised at how prices went up. 

Inflation concerns persist but stock market investors are advised not to be disheartened by this scenario. 

 

Inflation slowed to 6.3% in August (from 6.4% in July) due to easing oil prices and slower increases in food prices. Inflation now averaged 4.9% year-to-date and BDO Securities expects it to settle at 5.3% for this fiscal year assuming inflation will peak this quarter. 

 

However, the Philippines remains vulnerable to inflation risks given its status as a food and energy importer.

“Philippine inflation basket is more sensitive to food and energy commodities (oil, coal, rice). While commodity price trends have softened as of late (due to slowing global growth concerns), we think domestic factors (i.e. tight food supply) are set to become the primary drivers of inflation going forward,” said Abigail Chiw, BDO Securities Head of Research.

 

BDO Securities said that while elevated inflation remains the key risk for equities and earnings growth -- as it erodes consumers’ disposable incomes, investor risk appetite and overall business sentiment – investors can look at stocks with strong balance sheets and resilient business models. 

“Investors can explore stocks that offer products and services with enduring demand and cost pass-through structure as these are better positioned to manage inflation headwinds,” added Chiw. Cost pass-through describes what happens when a business changes the price of the products or services it sells as a result of change in the cost of producing them. 

 

“Given the uncertain macroeconomic backdrop, we suggest investors to consider quality names in consumer, banks, property, and conglomerates, or sectors which we expect to still benefit from positive reopening dynamics and offer healthy earnings growth at reasonable valuations. Several of these names are also trading at deep discounts (i.e. below book value) and are good value recovery plays, in our view,” she explained. 

 

For the consumer sector, Chiw said investors can look at Puregold, Robinsons Retail and D&L Industries; while BPI, Metrobank and Security Bank are decent picks for the financial sector. 

 

Ayala Land, Megaworld and Robinsons Land are the stock picks for the property sector, while Alliance Global, SM Investments and GT Capital are strong bets among the conglomerates.
