Lazada releases its first Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) Impact report for 2022

Leading eCommerce platform Lazada releases its first Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) Impact report, Shaping the Future of the Digital Economy for 2022. The report details the company’s efforts to leverage eCommerce as a force for good to uplift communities, champion accountable and sustainable business practices and manage its impact on the environment.

“What we have started lay the foundation of our ESG commitments in the Philippines, which contribute to the overall positive impact that we are creating as a group across the region.  I am looking forward to strengthening our collaborations with our partners and stakeholders to shape the future of a sustainable digital ecosystem in the country," Lazada Philippines CEO Carlos Barrera said.

"These include our Lazada x For The Women (FTW) Data Science Scholarship program where we offer data science training to promising young women who are looking to build a career in tech for example, and LazGoGreen, our initiative addressing our environmental impact," Barrera added.

The report unveils the company’s ESG framework and its four core pillars: Empowering Communities, Future-Ready Workforce, Responsible Stewardship, and Effective Governance. It highlights many notable achievements for the company under these pillars, including:

Empowering Communities

Lazada Group created 1.1 million economic opportunities[1] within its ecosystem of sellers, digital commerce enablers, third-party logistics partners and dedicated employees. Lazada’s commitment is to give back to societies and communities in recovery efforts and building a more resilient society. Lazada works with local stakeholders to develop programs that support women in their journeys to becoming entrepreneurs and celebrates female entrepreneurs who have overcome obstacles to grow their businesses successfully with Lazada.

Lazada Philippines launched capacity building activities and invites entrepreneurs from across the country to participate as the company aims to boost digitization and eCommerce integration of Filipino owned small businesses. In partnership with ASEAN, Lazada pushes to globalize local Filipino goods and make them more accessible across the region.

Future-Ready Workforce

In addition, since the launch of Lazada x For The Women Data Science Scholarship, 70% of the scholars have been placed in new data science roles. The company also endeavors to develop the skillset of its workforce by implementing skill building initiatives that provide soft and functional training to employees. Lazada works in close coordination with its leaders, workers, and stakeholders to uplift their employees' well being, and maintain a healthy, creative, and stress-free working environment.

Lazada Philippines established initiatives such as Lazada University, an exclusive education program to empower MSMEs and small business sellers, and the Lazada Learning Festival 2022, the biggest virtual learning festival in Southeast Asia to educate and engage with aspiring entrepreneurs.

Responsible Stewardship

Lazada Group introduced a baseline carbon inventory to identify key sources of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission across its operations. The results from the carbon inventory exercises will serve to enhance Lazada’s decarbonization roadmap in the coming years and align with global ambitions to reduce GHG emissions. The company prioritizes forming partnerships with independent contractors with electric vehicles.

Lazada Philippines has launched LazGoGreen, an initiative that continually reduces the environmental impact of Lazada’s packaging through efficient plastic recovery and reduction efforts mobilized across the Philippines. Lazada boosts this effort by collaborating with businesses and communities to create a network of sustainability partnerships to drive the future of plastic production and consumption. In March of 2020, 70,000 alternative packaging pouches were sold, with 35 of Lazada’s sellers fully adopting plastic alternatives. By 2020, the company launched as much as 18 plastic collection sites across the country.

Effective Governance

Lazada Group is one of the few eCommerce platforms in Southeast Asia to be certified against the ISO 27001:2013 standards, an international standard for information security that sets out a holistic approach to securing confidentiality. It is the first Southeast Asian digital commerce company with a dedicated Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Protection Team. In March 2020, the team piloted a proactive detection and takedown of counterfeit goods, which resulted in 98% of proactive removals occurring before a transaction took place in 2021. Lazada Philippines has developed strong partnerships with DTI, DICT, and NPC to execute events and activities aimed at driving awareness on several topics concerning cyber security and online safety practices.

This report has been prepared with reference to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards 2021[2].

"Beyond being the eCommerce pioneer, we remain committed to enabling a sustainable and healthy ecosystem that connects our buyers and sellers in more meaningful ways. Our approach is to adopt an 'ecosystem mindset', where stronger ties with our partners and stakeholders along our value chain are key to creating a lasting, positive impact," Barrera said.

WWF-Philippines is enjoining the private sector to work towards convening a Philippine Alliance for Climate Action

WWF-Philippines is enjoining the private sector to work towards convening a Philippine Alliance for Climate Action in the culmination of the UNITED FOR CLIMATE: Sustainability Forum held at the Conrad Manila on November 28, 2022. The forum, hosted by SM Investments Corporation, gathered business owners, partner suppliers, policy makers, and civil society organizations in a multi-sectoral dialogue on climate action.

“Through a Philippine Alliance for Climate Action, companies can work together to create a shared vision and synchronized action plan. We hope this can be a way for the private sector -as the engine of our economy - to accelerate efforts for the single goal of keeping global warming to 1.5C,” WWF-Philippines Executive Director, Katherine 'Trin' Custodio said.

(L-R) Ms. Tina Marasigan, Hans Sy Jr. of President of SM Engineering Design and Development Corporation, Raymond Rufino CEO of Neo Group, David Aboitiz of Vice President of Commercial Strategy and Sales for Aboitiz Renewables Incorporated, Mr. Hans Sy Chairman of the Executive Committee, Ms. Trin Custodio Executive Director of World Wildlife Fund Philippines, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. Edwin Africa -  Executive Vice President and the Corporate General Manager and the Group Business Unit Head  Century Pacific, Hindy Weber co-founder Holy Carabao holistic farms, Juan Manuel Hoyos - President of Nissan Philippines, David Lim -Chief Supply Chain and Sustainability Officer of Universal Robina Corporation and Mr. Mon Isberto

“We hope that this forum will launch sector-wide discussions on innovative climate strategies across Philippine industries. The next steps will be to agree on a way forward and a timeline, and how all can progress towards a unified, private sector-led climate action plan that is context-specific, adaptive, and truly Filipino,” said Hans Sy, Jr. of the SM Group who was also one of the forum’s keynote speakers.

“Together with WWF, we invite you to carry on with the discussions from COP 27 - this time, bringing them closer to home. We urge that we look at our climate agenda through the lens of the Philippines’ agenda and the realities that Filipino businesses and local communities face every day,” SM Investments President and Chief Executive Officer Frederic C. Dy Buncio said in his opening remarks during the forum.

The forum kicked off the joint efforts to fight climate change through a series of “fireside chats” given by the business leaders, policy makers and environment experts from around the region. These discussions allowed participants to share insights, best practices, and other information that could form the foundation of a practical climate action plan.

The panel of experts include Noel Peters of the Asian Development Bank, Head of Wetlands International Philippines Dr. Annadel Cabanban, and the President of the Center for Conservation Innovations Dr. Neil Aldrin Mallari.

Keynote speakers Sec. Antonia “Toni” Yulo-Loyzaga of the Department of Environment and National Resources (DENR), Maria Isabel Garcia, Chairperson of WWF Philippines, provided the context for ambitious action which are the global double emergency of biodiversity loss and climate change, and the delivering the country's climate commitments.

Sustainability is one of the biggest challenges facing the planet. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), global emissions need to be reduced by 50 percent by 2030 to avoid significant climate-related catastrophes. The Philippines is one of the signatories of the historic Paris Agreement on Climate Change and has committed to reduce the country’s carbon emissions by 75% by 2030.

Filinvest City’s annual holiday tradition is making a much-anticipated return

Some of the best cities in the world to live in are rated based on their beauty, walkability, community spirit, and activities, such as dining, arts, and culture. In the Philippines, leading real estate developer Filinvest Alabang, Inc. envisions just that for Filinvest City, a township development that is designed to provide modern conveniences amid lush, green landscapes in a modern central business district. And now, Filipinos have a go-to leisure destination right here in the country with the opening of Central Park in Filinvest City.

Central Park is the newest development in the crown jewel of Filinvest City, the Spectrum District. The park is an approximately 1-hectare property that offers a public gathering place for a diverse community – office workers, families, and tourists alike, and is made up of the sprawling Great Lawn and lush Botanical Garden where people from all walks of life can take in the great outdoors this holiday and all year round.

Even before the pandemic, this impressive green belt park system connecting the entire city has always been a part of the master plan for a future-ready garden city. And soon at the center of Filinvest City, an iconic mixed-use development will rise creating a seamless connection to the Central Park– blurring the lines between private buildings and public parks for the community to converge and enjoy.

On top of that, Filinvest City’s annual holiday tradition is making a much-anticipated return. With the theme, “Come Together For Christmas”, families and friends can spend time with one another, create lasting memories, and rekindle their sense of childlike wonder this holiday season and beyond.

As the Christmas destination in the Metro South, Filinvest City offers a series of fun and exciting Christmas festivities at Central Park. Families and friends can catch the Fireworks Display every Friday at 8 PM until December 16, 2022, and groove to the melodious sounds of renowned OPM bands including Ebe Dancel, Rivermaya,  Lola Amour (December 2, 2022), The Itchyworms (December 9, 2022), and Franco and Urbandub (December 16, 2022).

Of course, Filipino Christmas is not complete without delectable dishes to truly enjoy the holiday festivities. Thankfully, Eats by the Park is open from Friday to Sunday from 4 PM to 9 PM where diners can select from a wide variety of food concessionaires and eat al fresco. And if they’re lucky, some might even catch and take a picture with Christmas characters at the park every Sunday until December 18, 2022.

On the journey in or out of Central Park, visitors will be greeted by glittering lights and Christmas installations from 6 PM to 9 PM until January 6, 2023. Residents and visitors can also create their own holiday photo cards by taking snapshots with the larger-than-life Christmas tree, Christmas vignettes, the beautifully decorated Filinvest City Christmas Standee, or the life-sized Belen. They can also opt to take curated shots of the Dome with Stars or the Christmas Tunnel.

For a meaningful celebration, guests can also attend Simbang Gabi at the Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel, situated along the gardens of Filinvest City’s River Park near Festival Mall starting on December 15-23, 2022 at 7:30 PM.

Beyond the holidays, Central Park has been offering various amenities for the residents and employees in the area. At the park, they can avail of a bike repair station, a children and adult play area, a wireless charging station, and Moovr, an app-enabled e-scooter sharing service. As they partake in any of these activities or more, they can also take in or take photos of the road art that surrounds the park. Central Park will also offer more amenities for the community to enjoy soon.

“We always make it a point to make every year a most meaningful one, and this year’s Christmas celebration has been taken up a notch. I’m glad that we can celebrate as one big community together again and that we’re doing it here at the newest gathering spot, our Central Park. We’re excited to create more community activities here at the newest convergence space in the south–from concerts, festivals, sports, to other related open-air events,” Don Ubaldo, first vice president for Townships, shares.  After the pandemic and lockdowns, Filipinos can look forward to coming together for the holidays and all year round to soak in lush greenery, fresh air, and special Filipino touches at Central Park and more must-see spots at Filinvest City.

IMA is accepting entries for the 2023 IMA AsiaPac Student Case Competition

IMA (Institute of Management Accountants), one of the largest and most respected associations focused exclusively on the advancement of the management accounting profession globally, is accepting entries for the 2023 IMA AsiaPac Student Case Competition now through 3 February 2023. University students in the AsiaPac region are invited to participate in this challenging but rewarding competition.

The competition presents students with an opportunity to interpret, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and communicate a solution to a management accounting problem. Students across the Philippines and Asia Pacific will need to register and compete as a team of three to five members. Members of the group can be from different academic programs but must all be from the same institution/university. As part of the case competition, teams need to prepare and present virtually to IMA members and distinguished business professionals.

The top three winning teams of the AsiaPac competition will be awarded prizes* consisting of a U.S. CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) Scholarship worth over US$2,000, Amazon gift vouchers, and the opportunity to participate in the Team Membership Program with an IMA chapter**. Additionally, the first-place winning team will receive an exclusive career preparation and development mentoring session with Dr. Josh Heniro, senior director of Southeast Asia and Australasia at IMA.

The 2023 case study was written by Charles R. Thomas Jr., Ph.D., CMA, CPA, CGMA, from Tarleton State University, James W. Hesford, Ph.D., from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and Michael James Turner, Ph.D., from The University of Queensland. Participants will need to think strategically and use their analytical skills to solve the business case “Kunapipi Gardens: Transfer Pricing in The Service Industry,” which asks students to look at the fictitious hotel’s current strategic position and to suggest an “ideal” performance measurement system.

“This competition encourages students to develop their strategic mindsets by analyzing real business challenges faced by enterprises,” said Heniro. “In addition, it fosters students' critical-thinking skills, the ability to make sound judgments, and excellent communication skills. These are the skills that are highly sought after in the profession. Over the years, we’ve noticed students are proposing more creative solutions to real-life problems, and we’re looking forward to an engaging competition.”

Full competition details are available here: 2023 IMA AsiaPac Student Case Competition.
