Personal Collection #GreenLifeGreatLife campaign made a mark in 2022 in its bid to protect and preserve the environment


2022 was a year of recovery for the entire country. With pandemic-related restrictions easing up, industries got back on their feet and Filipinos learned to embrace the “new normal” way of living. Personal Collection Direct Selling Inc., one of the country’s leading direct-selling companies, is no exception. Leaders and employees behind the #GreenLifeGreatLife movement represented Personal Collection Direct Selling, Inc. as one of the ten finalists for Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility at the Marketing Excellence Awards 2022 last December 1, 2022.


The company’s #GreenLifeGreatLife campaign made a mark in 2022 in its bid to protect and preserve the environment. Launched in 2021, Personal Collection’s advocacy took shape as the company shifted from recyclable to biodegradable packaging, starting with its top-selling household products. This move placed Personal Collection at the forefront of promoting environmental responsibility. To date, most of the company’s products are now in biodegradable packaging, moving closer to its target of 100% very soon.

Under the #GreenLifeGreatLife banner, the company supported the coastal cleanup project of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in collecting tons and tons of waste that pollute Metro Manila coastlines. In 2022, thousands of kilos of trash have been collected by Personal Collection’s volunteers. 

 Dealers and employees of Personal Collection Direct Selling, Inc. took part in several cleanup drives nationwide, collecting thousands of kilos of trash, including plastic waste, over the past 14 months.

In addition to keeping the coastlines clean, Personal Collection also made efforts to protect these from erosion and revive marine life through a massive tree and mangrove planting project. More than 110,000 mangrove seedlings and 55,400 trees were planted this year in various areas including La Mesa Eco Park, Antipolo, Eastern Samar, Misamis Oriental, Quezon Province, and Laguna. 

 

These undertakings not only made a positive impact on the environment but also caught the attention of the corporate world. Personal Collection was counted as part of the Circle of Excellence for the Corporate Social Responsibility Company of the Year Award given by the prestigious Asia CEO Awards in recognition of its impactful CSR activities.  

 

The company’s #GreenLifeGreatLife campaign also earned a nod from the Marketing Excellence Awards when it was named among the finalists in the Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility category for 2022.

Capturing and Storing GHG Emissions to Mitigate Climate Change


A new report by the UN Environment Program (UNEP) emphasized the need for the world to reduce 45% of emissions within the next eight years in order to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2030. Transformational change across industries, governments, and society as a whole is key to making this a reality.

However, rampant deforestation doesn’t help this situation as trees that absorb carbon dioxide and regulate climate are being cut down. In the Philippines, data shows that over the last 100 years, around 10 million hectares of forests were lost due overexploitation, extensive agricultural and infrastructure expansion, and the growing impacts of climate change. As of 2020, the country’s forest cover is at 7.226 million hectares or 24.2% of the total land area, far from the ideal percentage of forest cover for tropical countries which is 54%.

There is no pathway to 1.5°C without a near immediate halt to deforestation and significant restoration of forests and natural ecosystems. 

Carbon offsetting vs. insetting

One of the primary drivers of deforestation and the loss and degradation of habitat and biodiversity is agriculture. As such, stakeholders linked to agricultural and food value chains are uniquely placed to generate change and take action towards reversing these trends in the landscapes where they produce and/or source from. 

One thing that food and beverage companies can do is to initiate reforestation efforts e.g.  tree planting and growing efforts within their own sourcing landscape. Reforestation programs can be classified into two broad categories: offsetting and insetting. With carbon offsetting projects, companies plant trees in a location/s different from where their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions originate and unrelated to their value chain to compensate for their climate impact.

On the other hand, companies with carbon insetting projects apply, for example, agroforestry principles and take a forest restoration approach by reforesting areas within their own supply chains and immediate surroundings where their raw materials are grown and harvested to remove GHG from the atmosphere. 

Lanao del Sur Reforestation Project

Fulfilling its role as Kasambuhay ng Kalikasan (partner of the planet), Nestlé has launched the Lanao del Sur Reforestation Project in partnership with One Tree Planted and EcoPlanet Bamboo as part of its carbon insetting efforts. This aims to plant and grow 2.5 million native bamboo seedlings and 1.2 million indigenous forest trees across 5,000 hectares in Lanao del Sur by 2024. The project aims to sequester an estimated 4.1 million tons of CO2e over a 10-year period. 

This reforestation effort supports Nestlé's goal to plant and grow 200 million trees by 2030. It also forms part of the company’s plan to scale up actions in regenerative agriculture and deploy natural climate solutions to absorb greenhouse gases and contribute to achieving Nestlé’s Net-Zero target by 2050.

“We are restoring the natural landscape from both the bamboo side as well as indigenous trees to help bring the forest back," said Sam Wilde, VP of Forestry EcoPlanet.

At the same time, Nestlé continues to help farmers plant coffee trees in Sultan Kudarat province also in Mindanao and train them in the basics of regenerative agriculture. These activities are part of the Nescafé Plan, a long-term program to assist smallholder coffee farmers in growing yields and incomes, and eventually become agripreneurs attaining a quality of life beyond subsistence. 

Climate Change Commission Vice Chairperson and Executive Director Robert E.A. Borje said: “By accelerating and consolidating reforestation actions, Nestlé will contribute to the Philippines' sustainable development objectives through the protection and management of our environment and national resources.”

“Two thirds of the world’s emissions come from the very activity that gives us food - agriculture.  Clearly, regenerative agriculture and reforestation are courses of action we must take to help achieve net zero GHG emissions,” said Nestlé Philippines SVP and Corporate Affairs Head Jose Uy III.

Alipay+ today rolled out its first year-end promotion campaign with merchants across Asia and Europe


Alipay+, the provider of global cross-border digital payments and marketing solutions, today rolled out its first year-end promotion campaign with merchants across Asia and Europe, in collaboration with five Asian e-wallet partners - AlipayHK (Hong Kong SAR, China), GCash (Philippines), Kakao Pay (South Korea), TrueMoney (Thailand) and Touch ‘n Go eWallet (Malaysia). 

 

The promotion campaign sees the participation of over one million merchants in retail, F&B, tourist attractions and hospitality across major travel destinations where Alipay+ is accepted, including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and various countries in Europe. During the campaign period, users of participating e-wallets can enjoy a wide range of deals offered by Alipay+ together with merchant partners in each destination. 

 

Leveraging the Alipay+ marketing solutions, merchants are able to create and customize promotions in the forms of either digital coupons or instant discounts. Merchants can also distribute digital coupons in multiple e-wallet apps at the same time to achieve better marketing efficiency and scalability.

 

Japan

South Korea

From now till the end of December, users of AlipayHK, GCash, TrueMoney and Touch ‘n Go eWallet can redeem digital coupons by simply using the respective e-wallets to scan the Alipay+ in-store promotion QR code displayed at the store cashiers, and enjoy instant discounts of up to 10%, when they pay with their e-wallets via Alipay+ at local merchants.  

 

Participating merchants include F&B brands like Paris Baguette, Haidilao, retailers such as Daiso, Galleria Department Store, as well as Lotte Duty Free, Shinsegae Duty Free, etc. Over 120,000 merchants in South Korea are now accept the payments made by these four e-wallets via Alipay+.  

 

Singapore

From now till 31 January 2023, users of AlipayHK, GCash, Kakao Pay, TrueMoney and Touch ’n Go eWallet will be given three coupons upon arrival in Singapore and enjoy savings when shopping in Singapore. 

•           Coupon 1: SGD 1 off with a minimum of SGD 1.01 spent

•           Coupon 2: SGD 3 off with a minimum of SGD 3.01 spent

•           Coupon 3: SGD 8 off with a minimum of SGD 100 spent

 

Furthermore, Alipay+ has extended more promotions with various merchants at Changi Airport and Paragon Shopping Centre. Between 15 December 2022 and 31 January 2023, e-wallet users can enjoy three more deals: 

•           Coupon 1: SGD5 off with a minimum of SGD20 spent; 

•           Coupon 2: SGD10 off with a minimum of SGD100 spent; 

•           Coupon 3: SGD18 off with a minimum of SGD200 spent.

 

When taking a ComfortDelgro Taxi in Singapore, users can also claim SGD2 off with a minimum spending of SGD2.01. 

 

Each e-wallet user can redeem up to three coupons during the campaign period. 

 

Europe 

In France, UK, Italy and Germany, Alipay+ has rolled out various promotions and deals with local merchants, including retail stores Printemps in France and city-wide vending machines in Milan, Rome and Venice to reward shoppers this holiday season.

 

Between now and 31 January 2023, users of Kakao Pay, GCash, TrueMoney and Touch ‘n Go eWallet can enjoy up to 10 EUR in instant discounts when paying with the respective e-wallets at the aforementioned merchants. In addition, Printemps in France is also offering e-wallet users a special 5% store-wide discount and a free bubble tea voucher at the Printemps Haussmann store. E-wallet users can visit the store information desks to check for specific details.

 

As of November 2022, Alipay+’s merchant coverage has reached 2.5 million. Its merchant network includes regional and global digital entertainment providers, lifestyle services, e-commerce platforms and a wide range of brick-and-mortar businesses that cover major airports, shopping centers, duty free shops, convenience stores, cafes, restaurants and tourism facilities.
