Catch Miss Universe PH Celeste Cortesi at the world’s most prestigious and anticipated pageant on January 15!

Filipinos from all over the world, get ready to cheer for our very own Miss Universe Philippines Celeste Cortesi as she takes on the biggest competition of her life. Catch our very own contender, concurrently crowned Miss PLDT Home, at the world’s most prestigious and anticipated pageant as it returns for its 2022 edition on January 15, 9 a.m. (Philippine time).

Miss Universe celebrates what makes each queen “uniquely beautiful. This includes being their best and most beautiful selves by proudly representing their roots and culture and supporting meaningful advocacies with hopes to impact the world. With this campaign, Miss Universe seeks to empower women from all over the world to exemplify their charitable hearts and reveal their better and stronger versions.

Miss Universe Philippines 2022 Celeste Cortesi easily embodies a beautiful queen inside and out. The Filipino-Italian model and PLDT Home ambassador strongly advocates women’s education, alongside protecting and preserving the country’s indigenous people and culture.

A family woman, Cortesi has spoken about her deep care and love for her family – who has been extra supportive of her entire beauty pageant journey.

“My mom always expressed her desire for me joining and becoming Miss Universe. She’s always been very supportive of me. She would always encourage and motivate me during challenging times in my competitions. She is my strength,” Cortesi told the press months before the Miss Universe pageant.

Cortesi, who represented Pasay City, was crowned Miss Universe Philippines last April succeeding Beatrice Luigi Gomez. She also bagged that night’s Miss Photogenic and Best in Swimsuit among her other special awards.

Following her win and as part of her journey to the bigger stage, Cortesi has since been exposed to more workshops and training sessions. She has also participated in more publicity events and charity works – big and small – that altogether primed her on her way to the Miss Universe crown.

Celeste, however, admitted that her road to the big stage naturally came across challenges. But it’s the connections with her support group – made much stronger courtesy of PLDT Home – that only shaped her to be more ready than ever.

“I connect with my mother in Italy through the many social platforms available. She is constantly updated with my daily activities and whereabouts,” the 25-year-old model said. “We are so thankful for good internet connectivity because I can video-call my mother, my sister, and my best friend all the way from Italy with no interruptions. We get to catch up and see how much we’ve grown since the last time we saw each other physically.”

Ahead of Miss Universe, Cortesi is now in New Orleans, Louisiana making waves with her gorgeous looks she has since been posting on social media. She will be witness to another star-studded event, with Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo and Emmy award-winning TV personality Jeannie Mai Jenkins as hosts and Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray and entertainment host Zuri Hall as backstage commentators.

With family, friends, fellow queens, and the rest of Filipinos behind this young, determined queen, Cortesi looks to succeed India’s Harnaaz Sandhu and take home the Philippines’ fifth Miss Universe crown. She has come prepared, but for now, she said, it all boils down to faith.

“My life story is still being written. Every day is a new page on the scripts. I expect to make my story more inspiring.”

Bike Scouts and Pizza Hut come together for a Midnight Ride to bring the merry to these homeless communities

Christmas is a time of celebration, with family and friends getting together over a traditional feast. Everyone is in an upbeat mood, toasting to the holidays. But the reality is, there are thousands of homeless communities in the Philippines that find themselves detached from the celebrations during the season. This is where Bike Scouts, Pizza Hut, and a very special advocacy called the Midnight Ride, come together to bring the merry to these homeless communities.

Before there was the Midnight Ride, first there was Bike Scouts–a group of cyclists who came together to join relief and rescue efforts in Tacloban after the province was leveled by Typhoon Yolanda. Now officially known as Bike Scouts Philippines, the group has grown to over 150,000 strong, carrying in their hearts the Filipino spirit of Bayanihan and being a force for good - ordinary cyclists who are also rescuers and good Samaritans.

When pizza deliveries are made at midnight bayanihan-style by a group of volunteer bikers, Christmas happens.

Among the Bike Scouts' most established traditions is the Midnight Ride. Held yearly on Christmas Eve, volunteer Bike Scouts ride across the city to distribute food and gifts to the homeless, spreading holiday cheer to those who need it the most.

The annual ride drew the attention of one of the country’s most popular pizza chains – Pizza Hut. They had been looking for their own way to bring the spirit of Christmas to underprivileged communities. Through the efforts of Havas Ortega Group, Pizza Hut’s advertising and communication agency, Bike Scouts of the Philippines forged a unique partnership for the season – the Bike Scouts x Pizza Hut Midnight Ride Thru Delivery

How this campaign came to be a true collaborative effort. The Bike Scouts were tasked to pin areas via Google Maps, where they came across transient communities in Metro Manila and Metro Cebu. Over 141 pinned locations became markers for where the Bike Scouts x Pizza Hut Midnight Ride Thru Delivery delivered impromptu Noche Buena feasts to the homeless.

The pins also served as a way for the public to pay it forward during the season - sharing food and holiday cheer with those in need.  The result was a sprinkling of happy gatherings across the city - bringing hope, love, and the spirit of Christmas to where there used to be none.

The past year may have been a tough one, but there is always an opportunity to bring a smile to someone’s face, more so during the Christmas season. On one extraordinary night, all it took was a group of volunteer bikers and a pizza chain to make it happen during one meaningful ride at midnight. Follow the route of the Bike Scouts x Pizza Hut Midnight Ride Bike Thru Delivery on Google Maps through https://bit.ly/MidnightRideThruDelivery, and make Christmas happen all throughout the year.

Singapore Diagnostics employs over 200 medical technologists across its various laboratories

In the Philippines, there is widespread inequity in the quality and accessibility of healthcare services. Quality healthcare services are usually available only in select private institutions. Many Filipinos also have limited access to quality healthcare services primarily due to their exorbitant costs, and this is made worse by the fact that many health facilities are located only in Metro Manila and a few select cities.

Ritche Evidente, president and CEO of Singapore Diagnostics (SGD), believes that with this scenario, only around 10% of Filipinos have access to quality healthcare services, with many having to settle for substandard treatment and more not receiving any treatment at all. The pandemic further exacerbated the dire health scenario that Filipinos across the country are facing. The irony, he adds, is that Filipino healthcare professionals are most sought-after across the globe for their world-class talent and excellent skills.

“We really cannot blame our healthcare workers for wanting to seek greener pastures abroad,” he says. “Instead, we need to continue providing them excellent training so that we have a steady stream of professionals who can serve both local and international demands.” This, he adds, is exactly what they are doing at SGD which employs over 200 medical technologists across its various laboratories.  “We need to help them in their professional training so that when they leave, they can make our country proud with their skills.”

A subsidiary of Pathology Asia, which is among Southeast Asia’s large medical diagnostic groups with laboratory, genomic, and digital health operations in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam, SGD provides Filipino medtechs with world-class training conducted by experts from all over the world. The company also aims to help Filipino medical technologists before they work overseas, should they choose to. In this way, SGD also provides Filipino patients with well-trained professionals, while helping retain and boost the Pinoys’ fine reputation in the global healthcare industry.

Their highly skilled roster of Filipino medtechs is, in fact, a key factor that helped the company retain the prestigious reaccreditation from the prestigious College of American Pathologists (CAP) for the high quality of its diagnostic services.

“At Singapore Diagnostics, we have stringent and rigorous procedures in place to ensure that we deliver the most accurate laboratory results possible. Our well-trained professionals were trained experts with experience and credentials from all over the world. Nonetheless, even at that high level of quality, we also strongly believe in continuous training and monitoring to make improvements and elevate the healthcare industry for Filipinos so they can get the help they need,”

By continuing this work, Singapore Diagnostics envisions becoming the foundation for medical technologists in the Philippines – to not only be a center of excellence for technical skills but to also provide a healthy work culture for their 400+ employees nationwide.

Apart from excellent training for their medical personnel, Evidente cites two ways to raise the level of healthcare in the country - to establish more facilities and partnerships with other institutions nationwide; and to make quality of healthcare services accessible to more Filipinos through affordable pricing.

High-quality diagnostic services

This is critical, he says, because laboratory results are the basis for many medical decisions. Quality and affordable laboratory tests are very important because they help monitor changes in a patient’s health, and their doctors can work with them on any prevention, diagnosis, and treatment needed. Lab tests can help Filipinos be in the best of health.” Singapore Diagnostics also offer various lab tests at affordable rates for Filipinos.

Since its establishment in late 2013 in the Philippines, SGD has been processing laboratory requirements for over 500 hospitals, clinics, labs and healthcare institutions in the country, serving up to 50,000 patients every month and running up to 2.5 million laboratory examinations a year.

More world-class patient centers and partnerships

Collaboration between healthcare institutions is also vital in terms of improving access to quality healthcare services for Filipino patients. SGD collaborates with partner hospitals and laboratories for both lab work and training of lab personnel. SGD’s partnerships help provide Filipinos in the provinces with easier access to special tests or genetic tests to detect diseases.

“Singapore Diagnostics is here to help other local laboratories, not to compete with them. We want to support the Filipino community and work together to elevate the country’s healthcare industry locally and internationally,” said Evidente.

Currently, there are 6 laboratory hubs nationwide, namely in Makati, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Dagupan, and Angeles City. SGD also offers home service and is looking forward to building more facilities, up to 40 in the coming months.

By 2023, SGD is expected to build a new world class facility in the Metro, a state of the art laboratory that will employ more Filipino medical technologists and serve more patients.

In addition to the Metro Manila core facility, SGD is eyeing to build more laboratories in every major city in the Philippines. This will provide access to affordable yet world class healthcare services for Filipinos, with each lab   outfitted with multi-stage screening systems to help keep patients and employees safe.

Bringing world-class medical services to Filipinos across the country may not happen soon, but the relentless commitment of SGD to adhere to global standards,  train its employees and collaborate with other healthcare institutions may just take us there sooner than we think.

Best Places to Work says that Amway PH delivers outstanding work experience for its employees

Amway Philippines has been hailed as the top workplace in the country in 2022 by Best Places to Work, a prestigious international certification program that’s considered as the “Platinum Standard” in identifying and recognizing top workplaces around the world.

According to Best Places to Work, Amway Philippines—the local affiliate of Amway, a leading entrepreneur-led health and wellness company and the number 1 direct-selling company in the world—ensures that their “employees are happy, healthy, and enjoy coming to work”. In fact, Amway also emerged as the program’s fifth best place to work in the world in 2022 for “demonstrating excellence in the workplace by creating differentiated employee experiences and inclusive cultures that lead to stronger, more sustainable business results”.

The international organization pointed out that despite the global challenges of increasing employee turnover and declining engagement level, the average level of engagement of the Amway Philippines and the seven other top employers in the Philippines is at 84%.

“This achievement not only demonstrates the ongoing commitment of those employers to building and sustaining an open and transparent work environment, but also their efforts in keeping business engagement firmly rooted in trust, ethics, and behaviors,” Best Places to Work underlined.

To determine the top workplaces in the Philippines for the year, Best Places to Work deployed a methodology that aims to understand how well organizations engaged their employees and demonstrated best human resources or HR practices. Every year in Philippines, the program also partners with over 50 organizations across different industries to help them measure, benchmark, and improve their HR practices and use data-driven insights to add value, enhance agility, and increase organizational effectiveness.

“This recognition from no less than a prestigious international body is an affirmation of Amway Philippines’ longstanding commitment to our employees’ overall wellbeing. We believe that organizations where employees feel valued can provide the best level of service to their customers and stakeholders,” said Leni Olmedo, the Country Manager of Amway Philippines.

“This belief is founded on The Founders’ Fundamentals and Values which are deeply embedded in our corporate culture globally and remain unchanged since the company’s inception in 1959. These values of partnership, integrity, achievement, personal worth, personal responsibility, and free enterprise have guided decision-making at all levels, and for this reason, there is a great sense of belongingness and cohesiveness within the organization. This achievement will further inspire us to work harder to sustain and strengthen our employee engagement and workplace culture.”

P&G aids urban poor communities in Quezon City, Mandaluyong City, and Masbate Province

Procter & Gamble (P&G) Philippines, the trusted brand with a diverse range of superior health care, home care, beauty, and grooming products, aids over 6,000 urban poor families during Urban Poor Solidarity Week in partnership with the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP).

Through the collaboration, P&G donated over Php 650,000 worth of P&G hygiene and home care products during the Urban Poor Solidarity week’s first-ever PWD Assembly and Senior Citizens’ Assembly, aiding urban poor communities in Quezon City, Mandaluyong City, and Masbate Province.

“P&G Philippines continues to be one of PCUP’s catalysts in making sure that the less fortunate families in the country live their lives a little easier despite poverty and scarcity. The success of the Urban Poor Solidarity Week 2022 celebration would not have been possible without the support of P&G Philippines,” says PCUP Undersecretary Elpidio Jordan Jr.

(P&G donates hygiene and home care products to communities in need during Urban Poor Solidarity Week)

Since 1986, the PCUP has been the direct link between the urban poor and the government in terms of policy formulation and program implementation. It is tasked with establishing projects such as the PCUP Caravan and PWD and Senior Citizen’s Assembly to help empower marginalized communities by giving them access to basic needs and services.

According to PCUP, aside from food packs and medicine, proper hygiene is as vital as necessities. Access to products that enrich health, home, hygiene, and daily life empowers the urban poor sector and P&G’s product donations help fulfill this immediate need.

Aside from promoting proper hygiene education and access to P&G’s hygiene, and daily life products, the program also acquainted PWDs and senior citizens with the different programs and services of participating agencies that they may avail of in times of need. This includes health, legal, education, employment, housing, and other government services.

“Making a positive impact has and will always be at the core of P&G’s operations. We are grateful for the continuing partnership with PCUP; through their programs and projects, we are able to give Filipino families access to our products and promote health and hygiene,” says Raffy Fajardo, President of P&G Philippines.

“This 2023, we expect more Filipinos will be flying out of town or traveling outside the country.  While this is exciting, there may be unexpected events that can negatively affect one’s trip.  The NAIA incident is an example of where having travel insurance can help travelers manage the stress that comes from meeting the unexpected.  We are happy that Pacific Cross is able to offer benefits and protection that can support clients at such a difficult time,” says Victor Tanjuakio, President & CEO of Pacific Cross Philippines.

Hada Labo, this cult favorite is beloved throughout Japan for embodying the beauty of simplicity

The new year is always a good opportunity to reevaluate one’s habits and switch up routines. For skinthusiasts, this means reviewing their skincare regimen. As beauty experts round up the hottest beauty trends for the year, there’s one that has always been part of the list: skinimalism.

Skinimalism, which means skincare minimalism, isn’t really a trend. Rather, it’s an approach, a philosophy on one’s skincare routine. The rule is simple. Instead of piling up products on your skin or stocking up on the next big holy grail, why not give your skin a much-needed breather, go back to basics, and use effective products that your skin needs? Beauty experts and other skinthusiasts have all started swearing by their skinimalism approach to skincare for their healthier glow.

When it comes to going back to basics and effective simple routines, there’s one popular Japanese skincare brand that you can rely on: Hada Labo. This cult favorite is beloved throughout Japan for embodying the beauty of simplicity. Its products are all formulated free of all unnecessary additives, colorants, fragrances, and mineral oils that burden the skin. In fact, only the finest and purest ingredients like its star ingredient hyaluronic acid are retained to ensure maximum effectiveness.

One of its bestselling products is the face lotion (selling out a bottle every five seconds in Japan!), which is considered as the first step to that coveted mochi-mochi skin, a hallmark of healthy skin for its soft, bouncy, velvety matte, healthy-looking texture. Known for nourishing the skin through deep hydration, Hada Labo offers two lines of face lotions in the Philippines.

Gokujyun Hydrating Lotion is Japan’s No. 1 face lotion that’s perfect for daily use, especially if you have dry or normal skin. And it’s now improved with five kinds of hyaluronic acid that deeply hydrate the skin, replenish optimum moisture, create a moisture-locking shield to prevent moisture loss, and enhance absorption of other skin-care ingredients. This formula also has the world’s first fermented hyaluronic acid that significantly improves how it locks in moisture deep into the skin. The line also has Gokujyun Hydrating Light Lotion that contains four types of hyaluronic acid and a light, non-greasy formula specifically created for oily or combination skin.

Skinimalism also encourages use of multi-functional products, and Shirojyun Premium Whitening Lotion fits the bill. Apart from the hydrating power of hyaluronic acid, it also offers brightening ingredients to give you that crystal bright glow, making it the perfect choice if you’re worrying about dull, tired skin. It’s infused with Alpha Arbutin, Niacinamide, and Vitamin C to brighten and even out skin tone. Alpha Arbutin can prevent skin pigmentation and dark spots. It’s a natural antioxidant and skin brightener reduces melanin formation in an effective and safer way. Niacinamide is known for helping protect skin from environmental stressors like UV rays and pollution, while Vitamin C can help exfoliate the skin to reveal a brighter complexion.

For best results, use it twice a day and apply the product the Hada Labo way—by patting it onto the skin.

Want to give skinimalism a go? Head over to The SM Store’s Beauty Section in SM North EDSA until January 18 to learn more about Hada Labo and enjoy special freebies and discounts. Hada Labo face lotions and other products are available at Watsons and Zalora, and through the official Mentholatum store on Lazada and Shopee.
