Ballet Manila re-stages “Don Quixote”, showcasing the dance company’s strength in classical ballet

Relive the adventure and romance of one of the most beloved performances in classical ballet as Ballet Manila re-stages “Don Quixote”, showcasing the dance company’s strength in classical ballet at its highest standards. The shows will be on May 27, 2023, at 8 PM and May 28, 2023, at 5 PM at the Aliw Theater in Pasay City.

"The challenges that Ballet Manila has faced these past years have proven our grit and resilience in the face of adversity, which I believe is relatable with Don Quixote's burning passion, the love for adventure and challenges to prove oneself. It also fills me with so much excitement to showcase our edge in classical ballet once again as a dance company with the return of Don Quixote this year," said Macuja Elizalde.

Embodying the Hispanic spirit of Don Quixote’s epic tale is American danseur and a rising star of San Francisco Ballet Esteban Hernandez, who will fly into Manila to perform as Basilio, Kitri’s love interest. Hernandez is fast gaining recognition in the international ballet scene. He joined San Francisco Ballet in 2013, was promoted as a soloist in 2017 and principal dancer in 2019.

One of the most notable feats of San Francisco’s rising star was his performance at Gala Despertares in Mexico City, which was produced by Soul Arts Productions, owned by Esteban and his brother, Isaac Hernandez. He has also received multiple accolades including the Latino Spirit Award from the California Latino Legislative Caucus for achievements in the performing arts held at Sacramento, California, He is also a recipient of the Jerome Robbins Foundation Award and gold medals at the Youth America Grand Prix and was named one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in Mexico.

The iconic role of Kitri, on the other hand, will be performed by Ballet Manila’s principal dancer, Jasmine Pia Dames, who is also a Gawad Buhay 2015 awardee as Best Featured Female in Classical Ballet for her role in Romeo and Juliet. Interestingly, her twin sister Jessica Pearl portrayed the same role in the modern iteration of the same story directed by Martin Lawrance in February, which is also part of the 25th season performance.

“The role of Kitri has always been one of my favorite ballerina roles. As a mentor and director, it brings me great joy to see Ballet Manila’s future Kitris embody the grace, strength, and passion that this role demands,” said Lisa Macuja-Elizalde, Artistic Director of Ballet Manila. “We see this as an opportunity to showcase the depth of talent in our company,” she adds.

Don Quixote is part of Ballet Manila's 25th season performance on its 27th year which was kicked off by Martin Lawrance’s very Filipino and contemporary take on Romeo and Juliet in February.

Protect yourself online by using strong, unique passwords for all of your accounts

The invention of passwords in the 1960s changed the digital world as we know it. Passwords are now an unconscious standard practice in our lives; from your first pet to the street you grew up on, they are deeply ingrained in our minds. Passwords today are the primary guardians of our privacy, personal data, and finances.

Despite this knowledge, passwords are often viewed complacently, even though simple, easy-to-guess passwords are insecure. Your dog’s name, spouse’s name, birthdate, and other words and phrases related to your life that are easily discoverable on your social media profiles are easy for attackers to discover.

While the onus of ensuring security and protecting data does lie on the companies that collect and store this data, there is quite a bit consumers can do on their end to secure their credentials. World Password Day 2023 is driven by the purpose of raising awareness about the importance of strong passwords and encouraging individuals and organizations to take steps to improve their password security. With the increasing prevalence of cyberattacks and data breaches, it is more important than ever to use strong and unique passwords to protect our online accounts and personal information.

Based on research, 91% of people know that using the same password on multiple accounts is a security risk, yet 66% continue to use the same password anyway. Steven Scheurmann, Regional Vice President for ASEAN at Palo Alto Networks, provides simple but effective measures to make passwords the primary guardian of your personal and professional

Set guidelines for passwords that prevent password spraying: Ensure long passwords with a good mix of different character types—letters, numbers, and special characters. An 8-character password is easier to guess by a computer than a 16- or 24-character password.

Avoid vulnerable passwords that are easily guessed or already compromised. If you go and Google ‘commonly used passwords," you’ll see a list that any attacker uses when trying to guess passwords. If there is a default password on an internet-facing device or even internally. Change it ASAP!

Avoid reusing passwords: Everyone hates remembering passwords; some great options are using the passphrase options. We can use it to create unique passwords that are easy to remember. Be wary of password managers; several have been hit recently, and some of them multiple times. But they can also be an option.

Require password updates at set frequencies: This is a pain, but consider it the standard operating procedure for business risk reduction. It doesn’t take that long to do and helps secure the organization if a set of credentials is stolen or phished somehow.

Use multi-factor authentication methods: If a password is stolen or guessed, no matter how hard you’ve tried to be unique, having other methods to confirm it is you trying to get to a resource or a web service you use is vital. Many different cloud, security, and operating system vendors have a multi-factor authentication app that you can install on your phone to link to almost every website that supports it.

By taking these steps, individuals and organizations can help improve their password security and protect their online accounts and personal information. Learn more about how to create a stronger cybersecurity posture with an intelligent, automated, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven security operations center by checking out Palo Alto Networks’ World Password Day webinar.

JCI Manila has strengthened its support for cerebral palsy awareness by launching a three-series book

Premiere leadership development organization  that would help more people understand the condition and provide support for families of those born with it.

The three books, written by Kimberly Pauig and illustrated by Yvan Limson, were launched during a symposium hosted by JCI Manila at the San Andres Sports Complex. During the event, speakers discussed the Bobath method and developmental pediatrics pertaining to cerebral palsy.

JCI Manila has supported the advocacy for increased cerebral palsy awareness through its own Project-CPAG (Cerebral Palsy Awareness Group) under the Golden Heart initiative since 2015.

“The main objectives of this event are for CP warriors (patients) and their families to have access to relevant medical practices and practitioners through the publication of a book highlighting the Bobath Approach,” said Bobbit Castro, JCI-Manila CPAG Chairman.

The event attendees included 100 CP warriors and their families, partner institutions The Vanguard Academy and Metropolitan Medical Center, students from the University of Perpetual Help, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, and Universidad de Manila, and JCI Manila officers and members.

Bobbit Castro, JCI Manila Project CPAG Chairman

The symposium was a Discussion on the Bobathapproach. Bobath is a physiotherapy treatment that aims to improve movement and mobility in patients with damage to their central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). Many physiotherapists use Bobath in the rehabilitation of patients with cerebral palsy.

For the symposium, the panelists were Dr. Pablo Beleen, a renowned international specialist in treating cerebral palsy and pediatric rehabilitation; and Dr. Alexis De Leon Reyes,  a pioneering developmental and behavioral pediatrician.

JCI Manila is launching the easy-read three-series book in collaboration with Dr. Pablo Beleen, a renowned international specialist in the treatment of cerebral palsy and pediatric rehabilitation, and CP Cares, an empowered CP community composed of patients (CP Warriors) and their families.

The first book, Ang Kapa ni Rafa, focuses on raising awareness about cerebral palsy and showcases the daily life of a patient. The second book Bakit Mahilig sa Dagat si Nanay? is told from the perspective of the families of patients while the third one, Pupunta sa Dagat si Rafa,  narrates how it takes a village and a lot of compassion to help provide the best life cerebral palsy patients can have.

The CP Warriors and their families got to listen to experts talk about CP, developmental and behavioral pediatrics, and meet other families who are going through the same situation. After that, they visited the Manila Zoo.

“We’d like to thank JCI Manila and our panelist doctors for doing this in the City of Manila. Increased awareness about cerebral palsy is very important because it helps improve the quality of life of our CP warriors,” said Manila Vice Mayor Yul Servo Nieto.

The event was presented by JCI Manila with the City of Manila, One Manila Organization,  Office of Honorable Vice Mayor Yul Servo Nieto, PalawanPay, Sonera Industrial Group Inc., Royalty88manufacturing, Ricoh Philippines, Armed Forces of the Philippines Health Service Command, Jump Prosthetics and Orthotics Services Co., mWell Philippines, The Generics Pharmacy, Bulul Brewery, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Bright Resource Hospital and Diagnostic Solutions, Biomed Medical Distributors, Uniland Medical Supplies Trading, Nutriasia, Global Procurment Inc., Oxford Distributions, Inc., and Jollibee Foods Corporation.
