Arus Kualan Traditional School: Preserving Culture, Empowering Futures

In the heart of the lush landscapes of East Borneo, an extraordinary institution stands as a beacon of hope for indigenous communities confronting the challenges of vanishing forests. Welcome to the Sakolah Adat (Traditional School) Arus Kualan, where nature herself is the revered teacher, and the pursuit of knowledge intertwines with safeguarding the essence of Dayak, one of Indonesia’s oldest indigenous communities.

As these communities grapple with the threat of losing their forests and the traditional wisdom passed down through generations, Arus Kualan emerges as a transformative force, empowering individuals like Selsi and Elis, aged 12 and 14, to become champions of their cultural heritage. Their journey epitomizes the dynamic impact of education in shaping inclusive and sustainable communities, promising a brighter future for Borneo's rich traditions and environment.

Selsi, the 12-year-old prodigy, has found her passion in teaching the art of playing Sampe, a revered traditional instrument. Beyond music, she also imparts her knowledge of ancient games and the intricate art of traditional weaving, fostering a sense of unity among her peers. Selsi shares her enthusiasm, saying, "Arus Kualan has given me the opportunity to not only learn about my culture but also to inspire others to embrace our traditions. It fills my heart with joy to see my peers learning and preserving our heritage."

Meanwhile, Elis, with deep ancestral ties, carries the weight of preserving the knowledge of traditional medicines. Inspired by her wise grandmother, who is also a member of the indigenous Dayak community, Elis passionately embraces the role of a healer. Moreover, her fluency in English transforms her into a cultural ambassador, warmly welcoming foreign visitors and guiding them through the wonders of Arus Kualan. Elis shares her vision, stating, "I want to bridge the gap between our cultural heritage and the world. By sharing our knowledge of traditional medicine and arts, we can create a deeper appreciation for our identity."

Founded in 2014, the Arus Kualan traditional school branches stretch far and wide across East Kalimantan as a beacon of cultural preservation, creating a diverse community of learners eager to preserve their Dayak heritage. Rooted in the belief that local wisdom is the key to sustaining cultural legacy, this non-formal education institution imparts the art of traditional dances, music, and handicrafts to its enthusiastic students. Founded on the philosophy that "alam raya adalah sekolah dan setiap orang adalah guru" (nature is a school, and everyone is a teacher), Arus Kualan embraces learners of all ages.

Over the past decade, Arus Kualan has witnessed a growing interest in its mission, with approximately 350 students recorded from 2014 to 2023. At present, around 168 students actively participate in the school's transformative programs. According to Plorentina Dessy, Founder of Arus Kualan, "Our school believes in the transformative power of education and that everyone, regardless of age, can be both a student and a teacher."

Safeguarding Heritage through Environmental Advocacy

For generations, the Dayak people have cherished their lands, viewing every tree, river, and creature as part of their identity. Arus Kualan imparts this sacred knowledge, instilling love and respect for nature in its students.

The loss of forests in Borneo threatens indigenous communities' traditional knowledge and way of life. Relying heavily on forests for sustenance and resources, diminishing forests endanger their well-being and cultural ties. Urgent conservation efforts and sustainable practices are crucial to preserve Borneo's forests and safeguard their heritage for future generations.

Amid deforestation and climate change challenges, Arus Kualan's focus on environmental stewardship becomes vital. Integrating conservation teachings into its curriculum, the school equips students with resilience and cultural values. Immersing students in nature through jungle treks and wildlife observations fosters profound appreciation for the interconnectedness of all living beings.

Selsi and Elis embrace Arus Kualan's teachings, understanding the importance of protecting their forests for traditional medicine and community well-being. Arus Kualan empowers them to safeguard their cultural heritage and the environment for a sustainable future. Together, they work to preserve the intricate tapestry of their cultural heritage and the diversity of Borneo's ecosystem.

Selsi remarks, "The more I learn about nature, the more I feel connected to our cultural roots. Arus Kualan has taught me that we are guardians of our environment, and it is our responsibility to protect it for future generations." Elis also added, "I believe that we hold the key to safeguarding our cultural heritage and the environment. Through hands-on experiences with nature's wonders, we can foster a profound appreciation for our traditions and the interconnectedness of all living beings."

Literacy Movement: Empowering Through Education

Recognizing that literacy is the gateway to knowledge and empowerment, Arus Kualan places immense emphasis on building strong reading and writing skills among its students. The foundation believes that literacy is a cornerstone of personal growth, enabling individuals to articulate their thoughts and aspirations effectively. With a keen understanding of the transformative power of literacy, Arus Kualan endeavors to equip its students with the tools to become confident communicators and critical thinkers.

To this end, literacy classes are held for children to learn to read, write, and even foreign languages and computers. These classes are designed to ignite curiosity and expand the students' horizons, enabling them to connect with the world beyond their immediate surroundings. Through literacy, Arus Kualan aims to empower its students to become active participants in a globalized society, where communication and understanding of diverse perspectives are key.

Selsi and Elis exemplify the transformative potential of this education. As they delve into academic excellence, they are simultaneously sowing the seeds of cultural preservation. Their success becomes a testament to the interwoven fabric of cultural heritage and personal growth fostered at Arus Kualan.

Shaping a Brighter Future

The Arus Kualan Foundation continues to be the driving force behind this transformative education, shaping a brighter future for both individuals and their cultural heritage. With a commitment to empowering young minds, the foundation nurtures dreams and aspirations, just as it did for Selsi and Elis. Plorentina Dessy expresses her pride, stating, "Seeing Selsi and Elis embrace their roles as teachers and ambassadors fills us with hope for the future. They represent the heart and soul of Arus Kualan's mission."

These two students, now also proud teachers, are the catalysts of their culture, they inspire hope and dedication in the next generation, passing down the wisdom they have gained at the school. They walk hand in hand with their peers and students, embracing the role of nurturing both minds and souls.

In the embrace of Arus Kualan, the Dayak community has found the key to preserving its heritage while embracing a sustainable future. Selsi and Elis embody the spirit of this transformative institution, illuminating the path for a brighter tomorrow. As Elis once said, "In the embrace of Arus Kualan, I found my roots, my purpose. Now, as a teacher, I am determined to keep our heritage alive for generations to come." With such dedicated individuals, the heart of Dayak culture will continue to beat strong, nourished by the wisdom of Arus Kualan. Their journey is a testament to the enduring power of education and cultural preservation, fueling a legacy that will stand tall through the ages.

Plorentina Dessy also hopes that Arus Kualan can serve as a model for indigenous communities in other countries, especially in the Southeast Asian region, where reckless modernization poses a significant threat to the survival and cultural identity of native communities. Dessy also envisions that once successfully adopted by indigenous communities in other nations, programs similar to her school can receive protection and support from local governments. For instance, in the Philippines, there has been support through the establishment of institutions and supporting programs like the Institute of Living Traditions and The Cultural Education Program Act.

"As we strive to preserve our cultural heritage and empower indigenous communities, Arus Kualan stands as a beacon of hope. My hope is that our model can inspire and protect native cultures in Southeast Asia and beyond, navigating the challenges of modernization while cherishing our identity and traditions." closed Dessy.

Nourishing Filipino Homes with Robina Farms Cage-Free Specialty Eggs

Cage-free hens produce quality eggs. This is why Universal Robina Corporation (URC) ensures that Filipino households can have only the best for their everyday meals with Robina Farms Cage-Free Specialty Eggs.

Under URC’s agro-industrial arm, Robina Farms focuses on providing clean and safe quality meat and produce to Filipinos. Its Cage-Free Specialty Eggs are harvested from the Robina Poultry Farm, which received the Good Animal Husbandry Practices (GAHP) certification from the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI). The product is also certified No Antibiotic Residue, No Hormone Administered.

Now becoming a global trend, cage-free eggs are laid by free-roaming hens. According to a  study, these are said to have dramatically lowered risks of salmonella and other dangerous bacteria compared to eggs from caged hens. By allowing hens to carry out natural behaviors before nesting, there are far greater chances to achieve food safety, nutritional value, and overall quality, while also keeping hens healthy. As of 2022, more than 2,000 companies worldwide had pledged to source 100% cage-free eggs. (Source: Lever Foundation).

Robina Farms ensures that its Cage-Free Specialty Eggs can meet the Filipinos’ demand for high-quality products. These are available in packs of x12s and x6s at Robinsons Supermarket and Puregold branches, as well as in Fisher Mall. These can also be ordered online through GoCart. For more information, you can check out Robina Farms’ Facebook and Instagram pages https://www.facebook.com/RobinaFarmsPH/ and https://www.instagram.com/robinafarms.ph/ or join its Facebook Community, https://www.facebook.com/groups/eatsrobinafarms

Super app Enstack paints a realistic picture of why digital payment acceptance remains low among SMEs

SME Store Builder Addresses Digital Payments Challenges Faced by SMEs and Helps Accelerate Digital Sales Strategies through "Build-a-Biz" Competition

In his recent State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasized the importance of digitalization as a catalyst for economic growth and closing the digital divide in the Philippines. With the digital economy contributing 9.4% of the GDP, amounting to a 3 trillion pesos in 2022, and 42% of retail payments already done digitally last year, the government is steadfast in achieving the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas' (BSP) 50% digital payment target this year. As part of this vision, the government has introduced the e-commerce roadmap, launched the eGov app, and is actively advocating for National IDs, anticipating their future benefits.

Despite these significant strides, the journey to digitalize Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the Philippines remains challenging. Recognizing the obstacles faced by Filipino small business owners, SME store builder Enstack leverages its extensive knowledge of the difficulties experienced by over 100,000 merchants on its platform to provide an effective solution that businesses can implement today. Their diverse merchant base ranges from fashion, health and beauty, and home and living retail sellers to food business owners and service providers, many of whom previously lacked a proper business management tool to facilitate growth and success.

Super app Enstack paints a realistic picture of why digital payment acceptance remains low among SMEs and how they can facilitate progress:

  1. Premium P2M Payment Fees: Existing high transaction fees averaging 3% for Person-to-Merchant (P2M) payments pose a significant challenge for small businesses, increasing their operational costs and driving them towards less scalable Person-to-Person (P2P) payment methods. Recognizing this roadblock, Enstack removes payment barriers and offers lower and more manageable transaction fees, empowering all businesses to seamlessly receive digital payments to enhance growth and expansion opportunities, while alleviating the financial strain on SMEs.
  2. Cumbersome Merchant Payment Account Setup: According to the World Bank, it requires an average of 33 days[1] to set up a business in the Philippines compared to its Southeast Asia neighbors who range from 1.5 days (Singapore) to 16 days (Vietnam). A large part of this is the time-consuming process of setting up merchant payment accounts due to paperwork and complex requirements, which impedes small businesses from entering the digital payment landscape, expanding their customer base, and increasing revenue. Enstack works closely with its payment partners to simplify the onboarding process, requiring only an ID and Proof of Billing to start accepting debit and card payments, while online bank transfers and wallet payments can be facilitated with just an ID from the merchant.
  3. End-to-End Tools Optimizing Digital Payments: While some businesses have adopted digital payments, many still grapple with manual processes in matching and reconciling orders to payments. Labor-intensive and error-prone, this can result in inaccuracies in both cash and inventory management. Enstack not only provides quick store setup, but also a seamless checkout process, capturing payments for each order made on any of its online or offline sales channels and automatically tagging them to the respective orders for streamlined tracking and management.

"Our mission goes beyond overcoming digitalization roadblocks; we are dedicated to leading Filipinos into a thriving e-commerce ecosystem while helping SMEs turn their business dreams into reality. We share the government's vision of a digitally empowered nation and aim to provide every Filipino business, regardless of size or industry, access to the tools and resources they need to succeed in the digital landscape. By providing practical solutions tailored to the unique challenges faced by SMEs, we aim to empower them to embrace the benefits of online commerce and maximize their growth potential," said Macy Castillo, CEO and co-founder at Enstack.

In line with this mission, Enstack is staging its Build-a-Biz competition. Designed to accelerate the adoption of digital sales strategies among SMEs, the competition offers a cash prize of ₱1 million pesos to the SME with the highest grossing sales completed through the Enstack app by the end of the year. Human Struggles and its Beauty in the new Show “Under Construction”

To be human is to be always in the state of under construction. We build and rebuild ourselves because our desires and memories are fragile under the gaze of the universe. To be alive is to be open to construction, deconstruction, and reconstruction. We should embrace change no matter how unsettling it is for in the end it will give us agency and perhaps lead us to a meaningful life. We must trust the process of change. We must trust life itself.

This is the philosophical intent of “Under Construction: A Two-Man Exhibit” by Jom Vega and Ray Defante Gibraltar at the Gateway Gallery in Araneta City, Quezon City, which runs from August 5 to 12. The opening of the exhibit is on 5 August at 4 p.m. and is open to the public.

Vega is a freelance comic creator. In 1998, he joined the Philippine Educational Theater Associate as a production designer and his stint became partly a training as a script writer for the stage and film. A graduate of Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Painting from the University of Santo Tomas, Vega was trained in using oil, watercolor, and ink.

On the other hand, Gibraltar is a film and TV director, and graphic designer. He has been painting since he was a Bachelor of Arts major in Philosophy student at University of Saint La Salle. His film, Wanted Border, won the Best Film Award at the Cinema One Originals Film Festival. He used to direct teleseryes for GMA 7.

The exhibit will feature recent works by Vega and Gibraltar that are mostly abstract and surreal, articulating the internal human struggles in the realm that are psychological, emotional, spiritual and intellectual. Demonstrating their competence in the use of acrylic on canvas, acrylic on paper, ink on vellum board, and mixed media, the two artists will transport the consciousness of the audience to the aesthetic realm that lies somewhere between dystopia and utopia.

Elevating Efficiency and Performance with TCL P7 Series Direct Drive+ Topload Washing Machine

TCL, the leading consumer electronics brand and the world's top two TV brand, finally launches the new P7 series Direct Drive+ Topload Washing Machine that is set to exceed your expectations on the usual washing appliance.  P7 Series washing machine provides powerful rinse without damaging your clothes and be energy efficient all at the same time.

The P7 Series WashPro DirectDrive+ is created with top performing functions that you only get to see in more expensive models.  With the advent of innovative washing machines coming out in the market, TCL made sure that you get to experience the most innovative product at a more affordable price.

“That’s how we did our Washing Machine, emulate on how we do the traditional washing before but made it more efficiently, effectively and within reach for our Filipino,” says Mr. Jie Cheng, TCL Chief Executive Officer.

Indeed, the P7 Series WashPro will make your laundry washing worthwhile and enjoyable with its top functions that will satisfy users even more.

More Stable and Quieter, More Energy-Efficient and Durable

The P7 Series washing machines can stay still and do their work as quietly as possible without the hassle of loud vibrating noises. Thanks to the DD Inverter Motor or the Direct drive motor that works without a belt and the powerful motor is straightly attached to the drum. This makes the washing machine more efficient. The stable structure make it vastly to reduce the noise and vibration. Meanwhile it is able to increase durability while reducing energy and water consumption.

Waterfall Style Washing

When water cascades inside the P7 Series washing machine, you’ll be assured that the clothes are rinsed less abrasively and the detergent is dissolved more efficiently.  This waterfall style washing feature avoids the high spin and tangling of clothes which often happens when you stuff your washing machine with more than its load.

Less Friction, More Care

Emulating the hand washing style that we have grown accustomed to is the unique feature dubbed as the Honeycomb Drum. This function is done by spinning the drum in a programmed movement to really remove the stains and clean your clothes.A hexagonal capillary design has evolved in order to care for clothes during a cycle. The rounded inner convex surface gives the garment better protection by reducing friction damage to them. Besides, the tiny 2.3mm drying holes could protect clothes from being stretched.
