Further elevating the digital art experience, the 7th floor of the fair played host to a dynamic showcase of digital, crypto, and new media artworks, displayed on massive LG QNED and OLED screens. “ArtFairPH/Projects will be located on the 7th floor. The layout will immediately feel different from the gallery floors, and will encourage a sense of discovery. For the first time, we will have quite a few foreign artists presenting for Projects,” Art Fair Philippines’ Lisa Periquet shared. This initiative not only amplified the visibility of digital artists but also illustrated LG's dedication to supporting innovative art mediums that resonate with the tech-savvy and crypto-curious audience. LG's innovative screens also boast the versatility to be installed vertically, catering perfectly to the unique aspect ratios and orientations that contemporary digital artworks often require.

 

In addition to supporting visual art displays, LG's cutting-edge OLED screens played a crucial role in the fair's educational and cinematic endeavors. The Talks section, an integral part of Art Fair Philippines’ mission to expand art audiences, featured LG OLED screens, which enhanced presentations and discussions with their superior picture quality. Among the projects using LG screens was from Data, an online commissioning platform for artists working with digital media founded by David Gryn. Another work was Be a Tree Now!, a participatory movement that responds to the call for climate justice. The project’s result was a moving multiple-exposure image that resembled a tree’s canopy. Similarly, the “speakeasy” area on the roof deck utilized LG OLED TVs, which provided an exceptional viewing experience that complemented the artistic and narrative depth of the discussions. The space, named NO SHOWING and spearheaded by filmmaker Moira Lang, served as a hangout and breathing space for guests at the fair.

SEA Tourism Thrives During Chinese New Year: Ant Group's Network Boosts Cross-Border Spending Surge

Data from Ant Group shows a robust rebound of consumer spending during the first back-to-normal Chinese New Year (CNY) travel season after the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in cross-border tourism.  

 

Robust recovery, diversified destinations, and scenarios for Chinese tourists in the region are made possible by Alipay+

Through the Alipay+ cross-border mobile payment technology solutions, travelers may pay for goods, food and beverage, recreation, and entertainment at over 8 million merchants in over 70 countries and regions, all from their familiar home app, without needing to change money or carry cash. On top of this, they can enjoy in-app instant tax refunds, as well as transparent and competitive exchange rates. Within the Philippines, Alipay+ is currently expanding its merchant coverage in Manila and Cebu, the two most popular destinations in the country. 

Meanwhile, a global campaign has been in full swing on the Alipay+ merchant network since December 2023 to attract outbound travel for Chinese tourists. In the CNY holiday week between February 9th and 12th, the number of transactions made by Alipay users overseas surpassed that of 2019 by 7 percent, while consumer spending recovered to 82 percent of the 2019 level, or 2.4 times that of 2023. Compared to last year, spending by Chinese tourists in the Philippines via their home e-wallet, Alipay, particularly increased by 50 percent this year, with shopping as the most popular category. Other than those from the Chinese mainland, tourists from South Korea, Hong Kong, and Malaysia are the top three biggest spenders in the Philippines.

 

Closer socio-economic connections between Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, and the Chinese Mainland, the new visa-free policies from major Southeast Asia destinations, and recovering international flight capacities are key enablers of the cross-border travel boom. 

Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Macao SAR, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, France, Australia, and Canada are the top destinations for Chinese travelers by their Alipay spending. Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore combined saw a 7.5 percent increase over 2019, and a 580 percent leap over 2023, with Thailand leading in total volume and Malaysia showing the largest increase. 

Besides a larger physical parameter, the Chinese globetrotter is also expanding her interest from traditional activities like shopping and tourism spotshopping to more immersive and unique local experiences. Globally in the CNY week, Chinese tourists spent 70 percent more on food and beverage than in 2019, venturing from downtown hotspots to out-of-the-way local treasures. 

In-town transportation volume grew fast thanks to the passion for "travel local.". Alipay users in multiple destinations now may choose from rail, taxi, rideshare, car rental, bus, subway, and even scooter-share when abroad, all from the familiar app on their own phone. The cost per ride on any vehicle for Alipay travelers dropped by 60 percent compared to 2019. A lighter carbon footprint also means more local SMEs on the public transport network gain a share of international tourist revenue. 

Promoting cross-border travel among Alipay+ partner e-wallets and bank apps

The Chinese New Year is widely celebrated across Asian communities. With new partnerships in 2023 and increased travel, total cross-border spending on the region's leading e-wallets powered by Alipay+ increased by 252 percent year-on-year. Daily average transactions increased by 304 percent. Japan, South Korea, Macao SAR, Thailand, and Singapore are the top 5 most popular destinations for Alipay+ consumers besides the Chinese mainland, where the Philippines ranked as the 8th most popular destination globally.

 

"With its use spreading across age and income groups, increasingly mobile payment is becoming an important promoter of local and cross-border commerce in Asia and beyond, " said Douglas Feagin, Senior Vice President of Ant Group and Head of Alipay+. "We expect to grow our partnerships with payment industry leaders, national tourist agencies, and merchants in 2024 to generate more growth. "

One place you must see, if you go during the colder seasons of the year, is Echizen Ono Castle. If you are lucky, you might witness the visual marvel of ‘The Castle in the Sky’. Located in the Fukui prefecture, the ‘Castle in the Sky’ phenomenon only happens a few times a year, mostly during November. On those few days, the fog forms a sea of clouds, obscuring all but one castle atop a hill–as if it were floating. Few sites in the world are as stunning and magical as this. 

 

Nestled at the base lies the castle town of Ono, founded around 400 years ago. Dubbed ‘Little Kyoto’, this charming town invites exploration of numerous samurai estates and a picturesque avenue flanked by up to 16 temples representing nine distinct Buddhist sects—a rare sight even in Japan.

 

If you are already in Fukui, the castle is a 30-minute walk from JR Echizen Ono Station, 15 minutes by bus from JR Echizen-Ono Station; or 70 minutes by bus from JR Fukui Station.

 

Shomyo Falls (Toyama Prefecture)

If you are into natural beauty, you will love Shomyo Falls. Found on Mt. Tateyama in the Toyama prefecture, Shomyo Falls is the tallest waterfall in Japan. Surrounded by lush greenery during spring and summer, and the reds and browns of autumn, the ever-changing palette of the falls makes for an incredible scene to behold. 

 

Shomyo Falls is 15 minutes by Tateyama Kurobe Kankou (TKK) bus from Tateyama Station (Toyama Chiho Railway), followed by a 30- minute walk.

 

Kasugayama Castle (Niigata Prefecture)

One of Japan’s 100 famous castles is Kasugayama Castle. Its ruins are in Niigata and are a sight to behold. As the former castle of Uesugi Kenshin, the site even has a bronze statue of the warrior, still standing guard over the place even after centuries. The castle is nestled between mountain ranges and trees to enhance the beautiful view. 

 

Kasugayama Castle is a 20-minute walk from Nakayashiki bus stop, or 15 minutes from Kasuga Sanso Mae bus stop to the bronze statue of Uesugi Kenshin.

 

Heisenji Hakusan Shrine (Fukui Prefecture)

Founded in 717 as a Buddhist temple, the Heisenji Hakusan Shrine in Fukui is historic and surrounded by lush greenery. The forest has begun to take it back to nature, embodying the spirit of Wabi Sabi which is the art of impermanence and imperfection. The ethereal forest and surrounding untamed flora are shrouded in mystery, with beliefs that the area’s mystical aura has granted people their wishes. 

 

The easiest way to get to the shrine is by car from Fukui city. The trip is a 45-minute drive from the city center. Alternatively, the shrine is 10 to 15 minutes by bus or taxi from Katsuyama Station.

 

Asahi Funakawa Spring Quartet (Toyama Prefecture)

Atop Mt. Asahi in the Toyama prefecture, farmers plant rows of nanohana and tulips every year in time for the cherry blossoms, creating the breathtaking Asahi Funakawa Spring Quartet. The mesmerizing arrangement of flowers is coupled with a view of the snow-capped Northern Alps and is visible from Asahi. The area is illuminated with fire torches at night for an unforgettable experience.

 

You can get to the Asahi Funakawa Spring Quartet via taxi from Tomari Station or Nyuzen Station in Asahi and Nyuzen respectively. The ride should take around 10 minutes. The lack of public transportation can make it difficult, but the view is worth the rental fee for a car! In April to early May, you can take the Asahimachi Express from Kurobe Unazuki Onsen Station to the Asahi Funakawa Spring Quartet venue with advance reservation.

The event gathered dental and oral care experts, Dr. Tess Villarico and Dr. Ashita Bhatia, who illustrated the importance of completing one’s oral care routine and demonstrated the efficacy of Listerine in being able to provide #CompleteMouthProtection for its users.
