How Max’s Group Continues to Thrive in Changing Times

From its iconic fried chicken to a powerhouse of beloved brands, Max’s Restaurant  has remained a cornerstone of Filipino culture for nearly 80 years

Max’s Restaurant, famed for its legendary homestyle fried chicken, has been at the heart of Filipino dining for nearly eight decades since opening its doors in 1945. The original restaurant forms the foundation of Max’s Group Inc. (MGI). MGI has since grown into a powerhouse, managing a portfolio of brands including Pancake House, Jamba Juice, and Yellow Cab Pizza. With over 600 stores, MGI's impact on Filipino culture is undeniable.

But in an industry constantly shaped by shifting consumer behavior, longevity alone doesn't guarantee success. The real challenge lies in evolving with the times while staying true to the values that make a brand iconic. MGI's story is not just one of survival, but is proof of how tradition and innovation can work hand in hand to create a lasting legacy.

Connection over convenience

Jim Fuentebella, Chief Marketing Officer of MGI, sits at Ruby’s Bar — a fresh innovation from Max’s that blends tradition with modernity. As MGI adapts to evolving consumer habits, it remains anchored in its core values of warmth, authenticity, and meaningful connections.

Even as consumer habits evolve—with convenience dining on the rise and the Instagram age demanding constant novelty—MGI  has found ways to adapt while staying grounded in its core values.

“Younger consumers are inundated with stories, filtered through Instagram and other platforms,” says Jim Fuentebella, MGI Chief Marketing Officer. “But the Max’s brand was built not because of Instagram. It was built by hardworking people passionate about the brand. That’s what continues to anchor us.”

The pandemic accelerated the demand for delivery and take-out, and MGI responded by prioritizing these services while maintaining the warmth and service that defines its brand. Behind the scenes, processes were digitized, and food preparation systems streamlined to meet the growing demand. Yet through all these changes, MGI never lost sight of its belief that dining is about more than just food; it’s about creating moments of connection and celebrating shared experiences.

As Jim Fuentebella succinctly says, “You’ll never see a robot serving in Max’s.”

Grounded innovation

Nadine Lustre with the Jamba Juice team at the launch of their partnership with DeHusk — a prime example of MGI's innovation through community connection. While constantly adapting to the needs of its customers, MGI’s portfolio also listens to evolving preferences. For MGI, innovation isn’t always about reinvention, but about staying connected and delivering meaningful experiences that align with the values of warmth and consistency.

For MGI, innovation doesn’t always mean reinventing the wheel; sometimes, it means simply listening to the community and adapting to their needs.

This ethos extends across MGI’s entire portfolio. At Yellow Cab Pizza Co., exciting products like the Truffle Series offer bold new flavors to consumers looking for something more indulgent. Meanwhile, Pancake House is fulfilling the appetites of younger generations with unique comfort meals like their limited edition Choco Banana Bliss or Sunny Lemon pancakes.

Jamba Juice, meanwhile, reintroduced its crowd-favorite Acai Blends, rich in antioxidants, providing more options for its health-conscious customers. Over at Krispy Kreme, new products like Cloud Bomboms put a playful twist on tradition with light, decadently filled doughnuts inspired by Italian bomboloni.

Not just classic, but constantly innovating — Max’s signature fried chicken stands alongside exciting new collaborations and product innovations, showcasing MGI’s ability to balance tradition with fresh ideas. Whether it’s a timeless favorite or a bold new twist, MGI is committed to delivering quality, consistency, and memorable experiences for every customer."

But innovation isn’t just about new products. Sometimes, it’s the quiet, relentless dedication to consistency. Jim Fuentebella explains that while the industry is often obsessed with change, MGI has found its strength in staying true to its roots. “The chicken you enjoyed in 1970 tastes just as good today,” he says, emphasizing the painstaking work that goes into preserving this signature taste despite constantly shifting supply chains.

Max’s long-standing reputation is intertwined with this ability to meet the most stringent expectations. It requires diligence, a commitment to improvement, and a culture of humility that treats every customer’s feedback as a chance to grow. “Consistency is hard to achieve,” admits Dave Fuentebella, Director of MGI. “But it’s about maintaining strong fundamentals—spot-on product quality, service excellence, and ensuring every visit enriches the personal stories of our customers.”

Passing the torch

For a family business as storied as MGI, its legacy relies on how well each generation prepares the next to lead. Jim and Dave Fuentebella, third-generation family members, stress the importance of this preparation.

“We have to make sure they are equipped,” says Dave Fuentebella. “Not just with the educational background and experience, but with the same mindset of service and care that has defined Max’s for decades.” By balancing mentorship with room for experimentation, the family ensures younger leaders are prepared to carry the brand forward without losing sight of its roots.

Paulo Salud proudly accepts the Tatler Best Bar of 2025 award — a celebration of thoughtful innovation rooted in tradition. As part of a multigenerational family business, Ruby Bar reflects MGI’s ongoing commitment to preparing the next generation while staying grounded in values of service, care, and excellence.

Ruby’s, a cozy 12-seater lounge at the Scout Tuazon branch of Max’s Restaurant, embodies the family’s collaborative spirit. Developed through the combined efforts of the third generation, the lounge was created to honor Ruby Trota, the pioneer behind Max’s iconic fried chicken recipe. Today, it is managed by Paolo Salud, a fourth-generation family member, continuing the legacy with care and dedication.

Less than a year after its launch in August 2024, Ruby's earned a coveted spot among Tatler Philippines’ Top 20 Bars, showcasing the next generation’s ability to celebrate their heritage while pushing the boundaries of Filipino dining.

As trends come and go, MGI’s vision remains clear: to serve good food, create meaningful connections, and build a legacy that lasts.

Tang Fruit+ Launches Sugar-Free Refreshment for a Healthier, Balanced Lifestyle

As more families seek diverse options for their daily beverages, Tang, the #1 powdered beverage brand in the Philippines remains at the leadership of innovation in the category. Launched last year, Tang Fruit+, sweetened with stevia, is a great choice for those looking for a sugar-free alternative without compromising on taste and flavor.

Stevia, a natural sweetener derived from the Stevia rebaudiana plant, provides the sweetness of sugar without calories or impact on blood sugar levels. This makes Tang Fruit+ a refreshing choice for individuals and families embracing a different or well-being-focused lifestyle.

The safety of stevia as a sweetener is supported by global and local health authorities. Stevia is considered safe for consumption within established acceptable daily intake levels, according to the WHO and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the Philippines. These approvals reinforce stevia’s role as a reliable alternative for sugar, for those who have different health and well-being needs.

According to Dr. Imelda Angeles-Agdeppa, a registered Nutritionist-Dietitian who was conferred as Scientist IV, and renowned food and nutrition expert in the Philippines, Stevia has different functions, such as food ingredient as well as a pharmaceutical and cosmetic component. “Stevia by itself contains zero calories and grams of carbohydrates and has many benefits,” Dr. Agdeppa adds. “The use of stevia may aid in the reduction of body weight, in reducing systolic blood pressure, in lowering glucose levels among diabetic individuals, and even help in maintaining oral health. It is generally regarded as safe and is used in a variety of food and beverage products.” Dr. Angeles- Agdeppa, also calls for local research to be conducted on the health benefits of stevia.

Dr. Imelda Angeles-Agdeppa provides insights on the functions of Stevia.

With its longstanding heritage in the Philippines, Tang continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of consumers. Tang Fruit+ offers the same fruity goodness the brand is known for while supporting mindful snacking and alternative choices.

Samantha Dela Cruz, Brand Manager of Tang Philippines, emphasizes the brand’s commitment to providing more choices for Filipino families. “Tang Fruit+ is all about giving our consumers an option that fits their lifestyle. We know that many families are looking for sugar-free beverage choices without sacrificing taste, and this variant delivers exactly that—delicious refreshment with the natural sweetness of stevia.”

“Tang Fruit+ is also part of our broader commitment as a snacks company to ensure we enhance the ingredient profile of our brands and provide consumers with options,” adds Dela Cruz. “Sugar reduction for the Tang line has been a focus for us over the past 10 years. We know that to maintain a more balanced diet, it is important to manage the intake of both sugar and calories. This aligns with and supports regulatory agencies’ advice for consumers to limit added sugar intake to no more than 10 percent of their daily calories.”

Currently, Tang’s line of 2 flavors including Tang Iced Tea contain less than 2% of consumers’ energy requirement for every glass.

Tang Fruit+ in Orange flavor is widely available in leading supermarkets, groceries, and online via official Mondelēz  International stores on Lazada and Shopee, making it a convenient choice for families looking for a sugar-free, refreshing drink. With its commitment to great taste and well-being, Tang remains a trusted brand for Filipino households seeking beverage options.

Home Credit PH’s Susan Ong Named One of Southeast Asia’s Top CIOs

Home Credit Philippines (HCPH), the country’s leading consumer finance company, continues to transform the industry through technology, making credit more accessible to FilipinosLeading this digital evolution is its Chief Information Officer (CIO) Susan Ong, whose strategic leadership hashelped reinforce the company’s market position.

Recognized for her impact on innovation, Ong was recently named one of Southeast Asia’s Top CIOs in the prestigious 2024 CIO100 Awards. The recognition highlights her role in advancing IT infrastructure and adopting cutting-edge technologies that enhance system reliability and operational efficiency.

A well-deserved recognition

With over five years as HCPH’s CIO and an extensive career in IT, Ong has played a pivotal role in building one of the most resilient IT infrastructures in the region. Her leadership has driven the adoption of advanced technologies that enhance system reliability and operational efficiency, ensuring seamless financial solutions for millions of Filipinos.

The CIO100 Awards–ASEAN edition celebrates the region’s top technology leaders and teams who push the boundaries of innovation and transformative change across Southeast Asia and Hong Kong. The 2024 winners were honored at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, in a gathering of more than 400 top executives from across the region.

Reflecting on this achievement, Ong dedicated the award to her team, recognizing their relentless drive for innovation and commitment to excellence. “This award is a testament to the dedication and ingenuity of the Home Credit IT team, who have embraced challenges and worked tirelessly to elevatethe company to where it is today. At Home Credit, we go beyond industry norms, continuously exploring best-in-class global technologies to drive value for the business. We are honored that the scale of technology we have implemented is being recognized by our industry peers. Our motivation remains the same—delivering meaningful impact through innovation

Ong’s strategic vision and ability to harness technology to drive growth continue to set new benchmarks for operational efficiency and technological advancements. Her leadership underscores Home Credit’s commitment to excellence and innovation, empowering more Filipinos with accessible financial solutions.

Championing women in tech

Ong’s recent win is a manifestation of her grace and comfort despite being in a male-dominated industry. This recognition solidified her belief that developing the next generation of women leaders is not just a moral imperative—it is also a business necessity. At Home Credit, where most customers and key decision-makers are women, diverse leadership fosters better decision-making and prevents “groupthink,” leading to more innovative solutions.

As a woman in tech leadership, Ong often advises Filipino women never to feel inferior in a room full of men or among colleagues from different backgrounds. “Hold your ground when it comes to your expertise. However, be willing to listen and stay humble about what you can learn. People will respect you more for it,” she shared. Fortunately, she sees a shift in today’s landscape, where women are increasingly empowered, vocal, and recognized for their capabilities.

Beyond advocating for women, Ong is committed to mentoring both men and women, helping them grow as IT professionals and future leaders. She firmly believes in investing in and promoting talent from within. “Because of this, you will always see me expecting our people to raise the bar. I don’t settle—I coach and challenge them to grow. It’s incredibly rewarding to see our talents take on expanded leadership roles over the past five years.”

Her advice for those looking to build a career in IT is simple yet powerful: “Build a track record of delivering results, keep learning, and expand your network. In IT, what you know today may be obsolete tomorrow, so continuous learning is crucial.”

Breaking barriers in the tech space

Ong’s passion for technology and innovation has been a driving force throughout her career, but her journey into the world of IT began with an unexpected source of inspiration—a movie. Watching WarGames, a 1983 film about a teenager who accidentally hacks into a military supercomputer, sparked her curiosity about computers and their power to shape the world. This fascination led her to pursue a degree in Computer Science at a prominent university, setting the foundation for her career in technology.

Navigating an industry historically dominated by men, Ong encountered moments early in her career when she was the only woman in the room. Rather than feeling self-conscious, she focused on excelling in every role.

As her career progressed, Ong stepped into leadership roles that tested her resilience and strategic thinking. One of the most significant challenges she faced was balancing short-term priorities with long-term vision. Leading the IT function at a company like Home Credit meant driving immediate value while also investing in transformative technologies that could future proof the business. Her approach has always been to do both—to address pressing business needs while ensuring sustainable growth.

Throughout her career, Ong has also learned the importance of fostering a collaborative environment where diverse perspectives are valued. “Differing perspectives in a room can be difficult, but they are not obstacles. They allow us to create stronger solutions. The key is ensuring that everyone operates with the company’s best interests at heart,” she shared.

Having benefited from the guidance of mentors and leaders throughout her journey, Ong now sees it as her responsibility to pay it forward. She remains committed to empowering the next generation of women leaders in tech.

Shaping the future of tech-driven consumer finance

Ong remains focused on driving HCPH toward greater technological excellence. She envisions the company continuously adopting advanced IT solutions to empower more Filipinos with innovative and accessible financial services.

“Technology is constantly evolving, and we must evolve with it. At Home Credit, our goal is to integrate the best global technologies that align with our business needs and maintain our competitive edge—not just in the Philippines, but on a global scale. With the support of my team and the executive committee, I am confident we will continue to lead innovation in the consumer finance sector,” she concluded.

TCL Executives, joined by guest celebrities, Rhian Ramos, EJ Obiena, and Valeen Montenegro, commemorate the 2025 TCL Grand Launch in a night of celebration and innovation.

TCL has been a key player in bringing technological progress to Filipino homes, consistently delivering innovations that transform everyday living. From how families enjoy their favorite teleseryes with immersive visuals and crystal-clear sound, to simplifying laundry days with energy-efficient washing machines, and cooling homes amidst the tropical heat with smart air-conditioning systems, TCL’s solutions are designed with real Filipino needs in mind. This legacy of pushing boundaries and redefining home experiences has made more intuitive, efficient, and powerful technologies accessible to a wider range of Filipino families.

Griffin Zhang, General Manager of Asia Pacific Business Group, TCL Industries

Griffin Zhang, General Manager of Asia Pacific Business Group, TCL Industries, opens the program with a compelling speech: “In the past, TCL has achieved remarkable results in the Philippine market. Our TV and AC sales both hold the number 1 market share in sales volume and have become trusted brands among consumers. The Ref & WM category has also maintained a rapid growth trend, with a constantly expanding market share. These achievements are inseparable from the efforts and support of every partner. Looking ahead, TCL will continue to uphold the principle of ‘Technology Creates A Better Life’, constantly innovate and improve product quality and service levels. We hope to work collectively with all the partners to explore the Philippine market and achieve mutual benefits and win-win results.

Under the visionary leadership of Peter Chen, CEO of TCL Philippines, the brand is poised to reach new heights as he declared, "Being innovative has always been in TCL's DNA. We are not a follower, but a trailblazer. For us, innovation is to go beyond our limits and develop cutting-edge, sustainable technologies. For us, being fashionable is to create a diverse sensory experience through the combination of technology and art. Lastly, premium refers to our ongoing exploration of aesthetic philosophy. We believe there's a power that keeps us going on the path to upgrading TCL's brand value. Let's work together, progress together, and prosper together."

The evening's centerpiece was a captivating presentation of TCL's 2025 lineup, unveiling four game-changing innovations poised to revolutionize modern living. These innovations, centered on cooler, cleaner, smarter, and sharper technologies, promise to redefine the consumer experience.

So, whether you’re an athlete chasing gold or just chasing your toddler around the house—we’ve got your back.”

With this, Yu welcomed onstage a special guest of honor, none other than Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena. He is ranked as world No. 4 in men's pole vault by the World Athletics Rankings. “I think the partnership is great – it's about chasing greatness, constant improvement, and perfection. Just as TCL constantly innovates to enhance our lives through their products, we athletes approach training with the same mindset: What can I do today that will lead to better performance?” EJ shared.

An exclusive fireside chat captivated the audience featuring the newest TCL's brand partners, TV personality and comedienne Valeen Montenegro and actress Rhian Ramos.

It’s all about bringing tech into our everyday lives in a way that feels natural and exciting.”

Both Valeen and Rhian are very much excited and looking forward to experiencing the best technology that TCL products has to offer.

For Valeen, she chooses the TCL QD MiniLED TV as her all-time favorite. “It has truly changed the game at home. I just love how it turned my space into our own full-on entertainment hub. Especially for someone that loves staying home and just inviting friends over, the QLED picture is so clear and vibrant—it never disappoints! I’m just so proud of how it made our personal space so homey. Especially coming home after a long day's work.”

Rhian’s heart fell in love with the TCL FreshIn 3.0 air conditioner. “I’m totally hooked on the FreshIN 3.0! What’s really amazing about it is the voice command feature that works even without Wi-Fi. You can literally just say, ‘Hey TCL, turn on the AC,’ and it’ll instantly turn on. No need for an app or extra connections—just a simple voice command, and it’s done! It’s also amazing how I can stay cool without worrying about the energy bill skyrocketing. The fact that it delivers powerful performance while being mindful of energy consumption makes it not just smart but also sustainable. It’s a perfect example of how TCL is making tech smarter and more intuitive for everyday life.”

Moving Forward to More Greater Years

TCL's 25-year success story is a testament to its strong leadership, which has driven growth and built key partnerships. To commemorate this milestone, Cyd Montebon, TCL Philippines Deputy Director of Sales, and Wesley Yang, Deputy Director of Retail, led the team in a celebratory toast.
