The SM Store Share Shoes Program brings joy to kids in Isabela
Shoes are essential in one’s journey through life, especially for students. With a pair of good shoes, they will not only be able to fulfill their daily tasks with ease, but it can also inspire them to work hard and take little steps to achieve their dream.
For most students in the city, a school bus or a stroll down the sidewalk are their usual commute. But for students in the province, it is a different story.
Samantha, a student from the Diasan Elementary School, shared the hardships she and her classmates face to reach school.
Diasan Elementary School is tucked in the middle of the Barangay Diasan, a remote farming community in Isabela with over 600 residents. Students like Samantha have to walk an hour or more on rough terrain to get to and from school and are sometimes forced to skip classes if the river is swollen due to heavy rains.
Despite the challenges, one would be surprised at the great lengths they are willing to go to for their education. The simple gift of a new pair of shoes will allow them to walk to and back to school in comfort and safety.
These are the kinds of stories that inspired the SM Store’s Share Shoes program to reach to the community to continue its mission of bringing joy - through the gift of shoes that can help make the journey of the students easier and more comfortable.
Sharing the gift of new shoes
Most students in Diasan have not set foot in a mall before, let alone a shop selling shoes, so as a treat for the kids, employee volunteers from The SM Store, Savemore and SM Foundation transformed one of the classrooms into a shoe store. They assisted the kids in choosing and fitting their very own shoes from the display of clogs, sneakers, sandals, flats and slip-ons donated by The SM Store MLC Shoes and Bags, and SM’s retail affiliates Crocs and Simply Shoes.
The employee and community volunteers also set up a “Feet Washing Corner” before the shoe fitting to impart the importance of taking care of one’s feet. The kids could not hide their joy as they selected and tried on their new footwear.
Apart from receiving new shoes, the kids were treated to fun games and groceries from Savemore. The kids even gamely participated in a Zumba dance number led by The SM Store Cauayan employee volunteers. Wearing their new pairs of shoes, the kids enjoyed the activities knowing their feet were comfortable and secure.
Taking steps to a brighter future
Samantha said that having a pair of shoes is important to protect their feet from injuries.
“Masaya po ako nu’ng nakita ko ‘yung mga kaibigan ko na suot na nila ‘yung sapatos kasi ‘di na sila mahihirapan maglakad ng isang oras papunta ng iskul (I was so happy to see my friends wearing their shoes because now, they won’t have a hard time walking an hour to school),” Samantha said.
Teacher in charge Domenador Mayuyo Jr. shared that for some of the kids, it was their first time to own a pair of shoes, with many of them walking to school wearing slippers or barefoot.
Through the gift of new shoes, The SM Store hopes to inspire these kids to take those important steps toward achieving their goals.
Promoting the culture of sharing and purposeful giving
The shoe donation was also accompanied by a medical mission through the partnership of The SM Store with the SM Foundation, Caritas Philippines and the Diocesan Social Action Center of Ilagan. Residents of the community were able to avail of medical and dental consultations, laboratory works, and had X-ray and ECG examinations, and medicines courtesy of the SM Foundation’s Mobile Clinic, all for free.
The activity was a part of the SM Share Movement, a program promoting a culture of sharing and purposeful giving among SM shoppers all year long. Since 2015, the SM Share Movement has collected over 1.3 million donations composed of shoes, clothing, books, school kits, disaster kits and toys.
The SM Store’s Share Shoes program encourages its shoppers to donate brand new and pre-loved footwear not just to help kids walk safely and reach their desired destinations, but to also inspire them to take important steps toward achieving their goals.
Through the #SMShareMovement Project, the SM Store remains committed to its promise to give back to communities and to be a partner in their development. Through the simple but valuable gift of shoes, they can continue to be a part of Barangay Diasan’s journey as the children take steps toward a brighter future.

Huawei PH launches its Huawei High-end Experience Store at the newly-opened Ayala Mall Manila Bay! This is like any other Huawei Store but definitely bigger and posh and it houses all your favorite Huawei phones, accessories and tablets. This is good news to all those in the South.
Huawei executives led by Mr. George Li, Country Manager of Huawei Consumer Business Group for the Philippines and selected media gathered at the event.
These show places provide official demo and availability of premium products such as the Huawei Watch GT and Matebook 13, as well as a wide selection of accessories such as wireless earbuds, fitness bands, phone cases, fast chargers, power banks and more.
Echoing the success of Huawei here in the country, Huawei opened its biggest HUAWEI High-end Experience Store in the country, where loyal fans of the tech brand can view and experience the best and most diverse Huawei products to ever hit local shores.
A tech haven by the Bay
Located in Ayala Mall Manila Bay, the new HUAWEI High-end Experience Store devotes its massive floor space to an all-encompassing selection of tech products designed to upgrade Filipino lifestyles. “Beef Mechado a la Lou” My Spuds and Dairy Culinary Cup-Inspired Recipe
Everyone who knows me will attest to the fact that I LOVE anything with milk in it. Whether it’s milk tea, champorado, halo-halo, omelette, soups, name it! I am also equally obsessed with potatoes. It’s one of the most nutritious and affordable veggies around. They’re also super versatile that you can just about add it to any ulam.
I’ve probably cooked all the variations of Pinoy viands with milk and potatoes. I prefer adding milk to soups, as it gives it a richer flavor. Meanwhile, potatoes are an excellent extender and absorbs the flavors in the dish. A perfect combo, diba?
Beef Mechado a la Lou is Masarap Machado!
This reminds me of my Mother's trademark recipe, MECHADO, where she uses loads of potatoes and adds milk to enhance the taste of the beef. This dish has become a family favorite and is part of almost every celebration in our house like birthdays, Christmas, New Year, anniversaries, and when my siblings come home from abroad.
Before knowing that she uses milk in her mechado, I tried to recreate her recipe, but the flavor always came up short like there’s something missing! That’s when she shared her secret ingredient. Adding milk really makes a difference!
Inspired by the recent Spuds and Dairy Culinary Cup, I decided to make my own version of mechado that I’m sure will make my Mom proud!
Here’s how to turn your beef mechado into “masarap machado”!
Ingredients:
*1 cup California Sunshine Milk
*1 cup U.S. Dehydrated Potato Flakes
*3 medium potatoes, sliced into 2-inch cubes (I would have used U.S. Fresh Potatoes, but they are not yet available in Metro Manila)
*1 kilo beef short ribs, sliced into 2-inch pieces
*2 tablespoon cooking oil
*2 tablespoons crushed garlic
*1 cup onions, chopped
*1 1/4 cups tomato sauce
*3 medium sized tomatoes
*2 medium sized red bell pepper
*1 teaspoon salt
*1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper to taste
*2 teaspoons fish sauce
*1 cup water
California Sunshine Milk is exclusively sold at S&R Membership Shopping
Procedure:
Heat oil in a heavy saucepan over medium to high heat. Fry the short ribs on all sides until golden brown.
Stir and season with salt, pepper, and fish sauce.
Add water and California Sunshine Milk. Bring to a gentle boil. Lower heat to the lowest possible setting. Cover the pan and simmer until the meat is tender, approximately 2 hours.
Make sure to stir every 15 minutes to avoid a burnt bottom. If needed, add a little water so it doesn't dry out.
Fry the chopped potatoes and carrots until the potatoes are golden brown.
Once the meat is soft and tender, add potatoes, carrots, red bell pepper. Continue cooking until the vegetables are cooked through.
Add U.S. Dehydrated Potato Flakes for a creamier soup base. Adjust according to desired texture and richness.
Adjust the seasoning with a little salt or fish sauce.
Best to serve while warm.
Blockbuster ulam! Simu’t sarap in 60 seconds!
I’m sure my Mom would agree that adding dehy potatoes is a stroke of genius! 😊
I had to cook another batch. It was just so good!

Joybean: Healthier, vegan-friendly option for milk tea lovers
When everyone is obsessed with milk tea these days, here comes the healthier and guilt-free version. Joybean. Joybean is a soy-based milk tea drink which comes in 4 flavors Matcha (Soy milk tea with Green tea and tapioca) Wintermelon (Soy Milk drink with wintermelon and tapioca pearls)
and Brown Sugar with Cream Cheese ( Soymilk drink with brown sugar , cream cheese froth, and tapioca pearls) and Chocolate Joy Freeze.
This is good for you if you are lactose intolerant. Im just as lucky as everyone else's as I can have both (milk and soya). As far as flavor is concern, its like youre drinking your favorite milk tea but healthier, aromatic and flavorful. I suggests you ask the cashier to customize your sugar to your level of sweetness. Since Im a non -sugar tea drinker. I always request for a "zero sugar" in all of the milk tea shops that I have been to. The pearls sweetened up the whole thing anyway.
I love that they also have the snack to match your favorite drink. I tried their pancakes (mini rolls) and it tastes sooo good.
Im just glad that Jollybean brings Joybean here in Manila. The first branch is located at Greenbelt 3, I am wishing that they will open here in QC.
Filipinos always get excited when there’s a new drink in town. “Milk tea is life” has been the new mantra but what if we tell you that there’s a new alternative to this drink that is equally delicious and addictive, but much healthier?
This September 25, the well-loved Singaporean soy milk brand , Jollibean opens its first pop-up store in Greenbelt, Makati City. Renamed for the international market as Joybean, this new concept offers premium yet affordable, guilt-free, soy-based products with milk tea options to cater to our fellow Filipinos’ love for the popular Asian drink. It’s the freshest Singaporean concept in the Philippines to join BreadTalk, TWG, and Toast Box (now Nanyang).
Brought to the Philippine shores by Joybean Food Masters Corp., the launch of this newest milk craze was spearheaded by its President, Norman Raquel, the Chairman of the Board, Frederick T. Siy, and the Senior Vice President of Jollibean Foods Pte Ltd., Luis Daniel.
Healthier, vegan-friendly option for milk tea lovers
Joybean reveals its own take on this popular drink by introducing a milk tea line exclusive to the Philippine market.
“We’re aware that Filipinos are huge fans of milk tea, so we’re delighted to bring a soy-based milk tea line to cater to this craving but with a healthier, lactose-free version that has less sugar and calories,” said Shannen Francisco, Assistant Brand Marketing Manager of Joybean Philippines.
Some of their recommended flavors are the Brown Sugar Soy Milk, Chocolate Joy Freeze, and Wintermelon Milk Tea. They taste just like your usual favorite drink, but with more health benefits. The drinks are made of soybean milk which is plant-based, and is a good source of protein so you won’t have to worry about compromising your diet. They are made of Grade A, non-GMO, and single variety IP Canadian soy beans. This makes it all vegan-friendly and do not contain any animal or animal by-products.
Apart from promoting hearty options, each drink comes with a sustainable straw made of bamboo, sugar cane, and coffee to help the environment. The food packaging is also eco-friendly and biodegradable. Joybean encourages its customers to help Mother Earth one sip at a time.
A full menu of freshly-made, on-the-go snacks to match your drink
Aside from the array of delighful drinks, Joybean comes with flavorful snacks to match your chosen drink.
You can order delicious pancakes in three variants; crispy, the Mee Chiang Kueh (traditional turnover pancake), and mini pancake rolls. They also have pudding and bean curd on the menu which one can enjoy individually or as a group with friends and family.
“Everything is prepared fresh at the start of each day, and Joybean ensures these snacks contain no preservatives and no food colorings. They complement well with our soy milk drinks, plus they’re easy to consume and especially for the millennials who are in full swing.”
To take part of this new soy experience, drop by at Joybean’s booth located at Greenbelt 3 (across Seattle’s Best Coffee) and discover the new joy in soy! The second pop-up store will soon open in SM Fairview later this year.
Shell's Biyahero promotes road safety as a shared responsibility between everyone on the road
Pilipinas Shell recently held its "Biyahero" campaign and partners with ECCP’s Safer Mobility and Logistics Conference and Exhibition, held from September 24 to 25 in the Tent at Solaire. This is to highlight road safety improvements engaging both NGOs and local government.
Most of the road accidents in the country includes the following; driver's negligence, distraction (texting and or making calls while driving), drunk driving, bad overtaking, bad turning, and overspeeding.
Its important to check and be alert of road conditions too.
Pilipinas Shell’s “BiyaHero” campaign has partnered with the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP), the Automotive Association of the Philippines (AAP), and the Philippine Global Road Safety Partnership (PGRSP) to advocate for more cooperation between the private and public sectors in making the nation’s roads safer for Filipinos.
BiyaHero, a campaign that promotes road safety as a shared responsibility between everyone on the road, participated in the ECCP’s Safer Mobility and Logistics Conference and Exhibition, held from September 24 to 25 in the Tent at Solaire, to highlight Shell’s initiatives in engaging both NGOs and local governments for road safety improvements.
Short for “Be a Hero on the Road,” Biyahero is currently working with the AAP-PGRSP to introduce safer driving practices in Lipa, Batangas. Shell and the AAP-PGRSP have been partnered since 2008.
Mandaluyong also serves as the campaign’s pilot city for all of Shell’s road safety efforts. The company plans to involve other cities in the multisectoral efforts to realize better nationwide road safety.
“We at Shell believe the first step to achieving road safety is to be aware of responsible driving practices,” said Oliver Ortega, Shell Companies in the Philippines’ General Manager for Health, Safety, Security and Environment. “Road safety starts with all of us, and being aware, alert, and prepared can help save lives.”
The ECCP hopes that the conference sparks discussion among safety and logistics stakeholders about how they could contribute to mainstreaming safety by exchanging ideas, initiatives, technology, and best practices.
Despite comprehensive laws like R.A. 4136, or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, road accidents continue to be a significant problem. The Metro Manila Accident Reporting and Analysis (MMARAS) 2018 annual report recorded 116,906 total accidents, an increase of approximately 6000 incidents compared to the prior year.
"Some, if not most, of our kababayans have this mentality that 'if I can get away with it, I'll do it.' They violate traffic laws because they don’t see enforcers around," said Cynthia Reyes from AAP-PGRSP. BiyaHero is taking a more holistic approach to solving the problem by promoting a new kind of safety culture in the Philippines. Through this event, BiyaHero will bring all relevant communities together to envision safer roads throughout the country.
As part of the BiyaHero campaign, Shell has prepared several measures that involve numerous different organizations to help promote road safety.
Shell service centers at the retail gas stations have year-long special offers, such as a free 14-point safety check by expert mechanics to motorists who want to make sure that their vehicles are roadworthy. Free engine insurance and roadside assistance are also available for those who opt for the Shell Helix Ultra oil change package.

The initiatives in Lipa and Mandaluyong both include a Road Safety for Children program that hopes to instill the youth with the knowledge of how to be responsible on the road.
Partnerships between Shell and PNP, PNP-HPG, and LTO to disseminate informative materials such as copies of RA 4136 also help ensure the safety and security of drivers during their journeys.
In addition to training its own truck drivers on how to be safe and responsible on the road, Shell has also partnered with A1 Driving School to teach customers defensive driving.
BiyaHero features various safe driving tips that every driver can use daily to stay responsible, such as the different ways to properly maintain a vehicle as well as what a driver can do to minimize discomfort when in transit.
“Shell believes that through ‘BiyaHero,’ everyone can come together to share the responsibility of making every road in the Philippines safer,” said Ortega.
