Starbucks Philippines strengthens partnership with Gawad Kalinga for its Kusina ng Kalinga Program

Starbucks Philippines strengthened its partnership with Gawad Kalinga for its Kusina ng Kalinga Program as part of the company’s continuous global advocacy for hunger relief. Starbucks Philippines and Gawad Kalinga have a shared goal to help fight hunger and support communities in the Philippines.

Gawad Kalinga’s Kusina ng Kalinga program is their strategic response to address hunger and malnutrition among Filipino children and pregnant and lactating mothers. It is a food donation program where thousands of nutritious meals are prepared and distributed to those in need. These meals are prepared by volunteers in their community kitchens, then picked up by parents and guardians or directly distributed to children in public schools, on the streets, and even in disaster and conflict areas.

As part of the Global Community Impact Grants, The Starbucks Foundation awarded a $50,000 grant to Gawad Kalinga’s Kusina ng Kalinga in April 2022 supporting nutrition for 600 youth in two communities in Quezon City and Laguna, as well as providing nutrition education and support for building and maintaining community vegetable gardens. Starbucks Philippines donated an additional $25,000 each to the Philippine FoodBank Foundation and Gawad Kalinga to expand its hunger relief programs in 2023 in Visayas and Mindanao regions.

In July 2022, the Kusina ng Kalinga program started the implementation of the program in Gawad Kalinga communities in Toyota, Sta. Rosa Laguna and Tribuin, Batasan Hills.

On December 13, Starbucks Philippines and Gawad Kalinga held a face-to-face volunteering program together in Gawad Kalinga Batasan, Quezon City. This program was implemented across three GK barangays: GK Pioneer, GK Tribu, and GK Telus II and Starbucks partners (employees) volunteered to help prepare and serve meals to 300 children in need of nutrition.

“Starbucks Philippines is committed to help fight hunger and support thriving communities. As we work towards fighting hunger, we are honored to be serving our beneficiaries alongside our friends at Gawad Kalinga. We are only at the start of this fight against hunger in the country and we aim to be able to help more communities in the coming months,” said Char Vilchez, manager for Marketing & Global Responsibility at Starbucks Philippines.

Starbucks helps make the Earth a little greener

I started living sustainably around the house 2 years ago. I turn off the lights when I go out. I chose to handwash my clothes if I have a few to clean. I always bring an eco bag wherever I go and a spare tumbler if I have to order a drink from my favorite coffee shop- Starbucks. I also bring my personal straw with me. Single-use items such as straws,  plastic grocery bags, paper towels, and even toilet paper are all called single-use items. They are costly to the environment. if you have to cut down on them, you should start today.

To encourage reusability on Earth Day and to inspire its customers to make more sustainable choices all year long, Starbucks will launch reusable hot and cold cups in the Philippines. Reducing its environmental footprint and positively impacting the communities it serves has always been important to Starbucks. Starting April 22, the reusable cups and straws will be available at all Starbucks® stores in the Philippines.

Interestingly, the reusable cup is nearly identical to Starbucks iconic white cup and is made from polypropylene, a plastic which is widely accepted into global recycling infrastructure. The new reusable cups are designed to make the cup sturdier than paper and is a more sustainable approach to single-use packaging.

Pro-environmental choices celebrated through new reusable cups and straws

As Starbucks continues to works towards creating a more sustainable planet, it also empowers others to join the cause and help organizations with the same vision. From April 22 to 26, customers who will bring in their reusable cups, personal tumblers or mugs of at least 16oz. in size or higher will be given the option to donate their Php5 cup discount to their choice of environmental organization from the given NGO partners. Upon choosing an organization to donate to, customers will receive a complimentary upsize.

Customers may choose between the World Wildlife Fund for Nature Philippines or the Haribon Foundation, two organizations dedicated to preserving life and nature. By the end of the promo, Starbucks commits to shoulder the amount needed to match the donations between the two organizations.

Globally, an estimated 600 billion paper and plastic cups are distributed annually. Although Starbucks cups only account for around 1% of that total, it is committed to bring more sustainable solutions to
reduce waste. Since 2014, Starbucks has offered the reusable cup in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. and so far the company has sold more than 25 million globally.

Last year, Starbucks also announced its goal of removing all plastic straws in its store globally by 2020. In the Philippines, the coffee brand has also begun taking steps towards this goal with the Skip the Straw initiative. At local stores, customers are offered to skip the straws, disposable utensils and napkins for their orders and are provided more sustainable options including specially-designed sipping lids and compostable straws.

“We’ve seen an increase in public awareness and concern for the plastic waste issue in recent years. We’re proud to provide a reusable option in all Starbucks stores in the Philippines without making sacrifices to our customers’ daily coffee needs,” said Keith Cole, head of marketing, category and QA, Starbucks Philippines. “While there is still a long way to go, we’re excited to work with others to find global solutions and encourage our customers to choose reusability whenever possible.”

Starbucks Philippines supports Teach for the Philippines (TFP) with Renovate to Educate (rED) program

Starbucks, Teach for the Philippines improve students’ lives, one classroom at a time

For many Filipinos, education plays a vital role in improving the quality of life. Despite this, many children struggle with their studies as they find themselves in tightly-packed, poorly-ventilated classrooms with dilapidated tables and chairs.

The Department of Education (DepEd) estimates around 29 million students are attending classes this school year, an increase from the 27 million enrollees last year. As the student population continues to grow because of the K-12 program, the classroom shortage and inadequacy of school facilities has become an urgent issue that the country faces.

Among other factors, a school environment can affect a child’s learning. Comfort and safety are basic considerations for a conducive learning environment, while stimulating surroundings with colors and creativity is also said to improve attendance, concentration and motivation.

Teach for the Philippines (TFP), a non-profit organization that provides Filipino children with access to quality education by providing teacher support and development, has been helping address classroom shortage and inadequacy with the help of their Renovate to Educate (rED) program. This enables TFP to connect education champions with public schools who need help in classroom and facility rehabilitation.

“Helping improve their learning environment is just one of the ways in which we hope students will be excited to go to school and learn,” said Clarissa Delgado, TFP co-founder and CEO. “Quality education is what will propel our children to succeed in life; and it’s when we work with like-minded partners like Starbucks that we can make this possible.”

Starbucks Philippines, a TFP corporate partner, recently helped refurbish the facilities of Pateros National High School in Metro Manila and Col. E. De Leon Elementary School in Parañaque City. The volunteer Starbucks partners (employees) were tasked to rebuild classroom chairs and tables, repair classroom doors, repaint comfort rooms and even fabricate blackboards and book shelves.

“We recognize the importance of education in our country and we see an opportunity to support this through Teach for the Philippines,” said Noey Lopez, Starbucks Philippines president.

For the past four years, Starbucks Philippines has been supporting TFP through various initiatives, including the yearly Starbucks Planner promotion. Through their partnership, fourteen (14) public schools from Manila, Laguna, Baguio, Cebu, Davao and Cagayan de Oro City have been renovated and rehabilitated, with the help of more than 800 Starbucks partners (employees).

“It has always been a passion of mine to help people especially those who are in need. Fortunately, Starbucks is able to connect us with our community through Teach for the Philippines and Renovate to Educate. Through each build activity, I feel that I have made a difference by creating a better environment for the future generation”, said Ana Mendoza, store manager, Starbucks Reserve 14 Jupiter.

Now, more and more Starbucks partners look forward to rED events as they deepen their commitment to help grow communities and improve lives.

Aside from rED events, Starbucks Philippines also supports TFP’s Fellowship Program wherein young leaders are enlisted as Teacher Fellows to teach in public schools for two years; as well as Flipped, a program wherein public school students are brought on educational trips.

With Renovate to Educate, Starbucks Philippines and Teach for the Philippines remind us that “education is everyone’s responsibility” and that we should all be doing our part in making a positive impact.

Starbucks Philippines supports PETA's annual Summer Workshop

This summer many kids are taking time off from school, and it’s the perfect time to take up a new hobby and hone their talents further. Countless workshops are popping left and right, from cooking to dancing. Kids nowadays can spend some time to pursue their passion and develop their skills. One of the most popular workshops this time of the year are theater workshops which allow kids to discover their unique and creative talents. Not only that, children who enroll in a program like this also get to learn more about our rich culture and artistic heritage.

This year, PETA brings its annual Summer Workshop to more Filipinos as part of its celebration of the company's 50th anniversary. The workshops will be conducted in various satellite venues in the cities of: Makati, Quezon, Angeles and Tacloban. Recognizing the vital role of theater arts in communicating our identity and our highest ideals, Starbucks Philippines supports this program aimed to shape a new generation of artists.

“Starbucks believes in supporting organizations that create opportunities and promote positive change. Since 2015, we have partnered with the Philippine Educational Theatre Association (PETA) as one of the beneficiaries of our planner promotion. We are inspired by their use of theater to raise awareness of important social issues while nurturing the creativity of Filipinos.” said Noey Lopez, president, Starbucks Philippines.
PETA's Summer Workshop started last April 17 and will run until May 28. Courses include Children's Theater, Integrated Theater Arts for Teens, Theater Arts and Creative Musical Theater. In its classes, PETA uses the Integrated Theater Arts approach, a method that PETA has developed since the 70’s. This method uses group dynamics, drama, creative dance and movement, creative sound and music, visual arts, and creative writing and is the company's main foundation for all the trainings it provides.

Children from ages 6 to 8 and older kids from ages 9 to 12 can enroll in the Children's Theater courses that aim to enrich the child's creativity and imagination. Teenagers aged 13 to 16 will benefit from the Integrated Theater Arts for Teens. As they learn to work in a team, they discover their talents and their self-confidence and communication skills are enhanced.

For aspiring actors aged 18 and up, the Theater Arts course gives fundamental knowledge of theater history and appreciation and skills in improvisational theater production. Meanwhile, the Creative Musical Theater course gives students the opportunity to learn more about the fundamentals of musical theater. The program provides comprehensive training that is aimed at enhancing the enrollee's musical theater skills.

The highlight of the course is a final recital: an original work created by each class whose participants get to perform on the PETA - Phinma stage.

"For the past 50 years, PETA has provided Filipinos with meaningful entertainment through theater productions, but aside from that we have also provided much needed theater arts education for the youth. This summer workshop is aimed at unleashing and nurturing the creativity of young people and adults through a unique and holistic process which allows them to shine whether on or off stage," says PETA curriculum director Dr Brenda V. Fajardo.

Starbucks Philippines and PETA have been working together since 2015 to advance the theater community in the country. Starbucks has primarily done this by sharing a part of the proceeds from its planner promotion.
