UNIQLO partners with ABS CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation for the "Upcycling Project"

What happens to the excess denim fabrics from alteration processes in UNIQLO stores in the Philippines? Everyday, UNIQLO collects denim fabrics from the customers who have their jeans altered. The scrap pieces of fabric are virtually unusable on their own, but UNIQLO Philippines and ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation (ALKFI) found a way to use them and do some good.

Dubbed as the ‘Upcycling Project’, UNIQLO and ALKFI are providing an economic opportunity for disadvantaged women to support their families. With some creativity and on-site instruction from UNIQLO’s sewing takumi (sewing experts), these women have designed beautiful and functional bags from the alteration fabrics, which in turn were purchased by UNIQLO.  After several months of hard work, the first lot of 1,000 ‘upcycled’ denim bags is now complete.

“UNIQLO not only tries to make life better for our customers through high-quality products. We also want to support communities like the ABS-CBN Foundation’s Bayan ni Juan project in Calauan, Laguna,” says Katsumi Kubota, Chief Operations Officer, UNIQLO Philippines. “We want to give back to the community by providing training and an opportunity to empower these talented women.”

The women are from families who used to be an informal settler and lived along the polluted Pasig River in 2009. ABS-CBN Foundation’s Bayan ni Juan project relocated them to a community in Calauan, Laguna.

UNIQLO is committed to give back to communities and make the world a better place through the power of clothing. In 2006, UNIQLO began All-Product Recycling Initiatives globally, and from November 2015, the company also runs a special recycling campaign called ‘10 Million Ways to HELP,’ to collect lightly used UNIQLO clothes and distribute them for refugees and others in need worldwide. In addition, UNIQLO Philippines has its own unique program to help local communities, like the Upcycling Project.

“Through our Upcycling Project, we hope to restore the dignity among people and the environment, evenin a small way,” Kubota adds.

These upcycled denim tote bags will be distributed to consumers as novelty items during UNIQLO Philippines’events.

Apotheca helps you achieve your health goals

The first thing that comes to mind when you say "compounded medicine" is what is it and why is it necessary and what's the difference between the two (from the medicines that we buy in a local pharmacy and compounded medicine).  I had the privilege of attending the Apotheca Integrative Pharmacy event last February 12 at Legaspi Village Makati. and enlightened about what compounded medicine is and where to buy if your doctor prescribed you the medicine for compounding.

Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing personalized medications for patients. Compounded medications are made based on a practitioners prescription in which individual ingredients are mixed together in the exact strength and dosage form required by the patient. It comes in the form of capsule, cream or gel, liquid or IM. It is often made in small quantities for the patient to be consumed, and you could wait or either pick it up provided you have the prescription for your medicine to be compounded.

Apotheca integrative Pharmacy the pioneering specialty compounding pharmacy in the country officially launched its wellness space that offers a wide variety of products that promote wholesome wellness and local goodness.

What I love about Apotheca Pharmacy is that aside from compounded medicines,  you can buy your hard-to-find organic products in their store, like the Human Nature products, green teas, chia seeds, organic veggies and fruits,  nutritional energy bars, juices, green teas, essential oils, and anything organic and is healthy, non gmo, gluten free products. While waiting for your compounded medicine, you can shop around and sip your coffee or buy that chia seeds for a healthy nutritious meal

Truly, this is the time for wellness and healthy living, to take proper care of our body.

“Apotheca is the destination for health and wellness. The brand of service that we will sustain to interact with our clients will be focused and personalized to help them achieve or refine their health goals,” said Richard Lista, President of Apotheca integrative Pharmacy;

Lista added that Apotheca specializes in custom compounding and advocates the strong communication and accountability between Doctor, Patient and Pharmacist, ultimater providing individuals a holistic way of choosing paths that support their wellness and healthy lifestyle. ‘

Apotheca is dedicated to high quality medication, superior service, personal relationships & smart product selections. it’s first wellness space is located at the Ground Floor of EuroVilla 4 Building, 853 A Arnaiz Avenue, Legaspi Village, Makati City. Apotheca is open from Mondays ti Friday 8:00am — 5:00pm; Saturdays 8:OOam — 12:00nn .

UNICEF launches Children First! Storybooks with UNICEF Ambassador Ms. Anne Curtis

Reading to your child forms a bonding moment that could instill in his memories as he grows older it is also one of the most important thing you can do to prepare him with a foundation for academic excellence.

As a parent, you have the power to boost your children's learning potential simply by making books an integral part of their lives. Introduce reading before they go to sleep or in their free time.

I remember  my father used to read  Rapunzel to me when I was 6 to 7 years old, it was memorable that I wanted to have a long golden locks like Rapunzel. I was fascinated at the thought of how come she didnt cut her hair and if it has magical powers and all. I was really thinking that time and wondering.  That book alone tickled my curiosity and lead to so many children's book that I lost count of. I do still remember all of them until now, by heart.

UNICEF recently launches Children First Storybooks, the event was attended by UNICEF Philippines representative Ms. Lotta Sylwander and UNICEF Celebrity Ambassador Ms. Anne Curtis, who authored her first book Anita, The Duckling Diva, it tells the story of how one little duckling overcomes her shyness with the help of her family and friends.

UNICEF launches Children First! Storybooks - a collection of six books that promote reading and inspire children’s imagination. Written in Filipino and English text for children ages three and above, the books talk about different topics such as overcoming shyness, cultivating friendships, and reaching for one’s dreams. The stories are presented in colourful illustrations to fire up children’s sense of curiosity and wonder.

Child development experts cite the numerous benefits of a healthy imagination in growing children. By thinking creatively, putting oneself in someone else’s shoes and learning how to express themselves, children grow up to become better problem solvers, have higher self-esteem and have a better understanding of the feelings of others. These are all important in the early years when children begin learning about social, emotional, language and thinking skills which lay the foundation for the child’s future health, happiness, and development.

"Children learn language quickly and easily through hearing and singing songs, having stories told or read to them, repeating rhymes and playing games. Having a supportive environment in these early years will help children get ready for school and life-long learning," said Lotta Sylwander, UNICEF Philippines Representative.

Written and illustrated by some of the most notable Filipino writers and artists, the collection also includes the storybook Anita, The Duckling Diva written by UNICEF Celebrity Advocate for Children Anne Curtis. Anita, The Duckling Diva tells the story of how one little duckling overcomes her shyness with the help of her family and friends.

"I’m very happy to have written my first children’s book, which I hope can help children particularly with their self-confidence and self—esteem,” Curtis said. "I believe that children should be given all the emotional and moral support they need as they grow so they can express themselves with confidence and explore their full talent.”

Apart from teaching important lessons to children, the books also contain a child—friendly version of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), as well as internet safety reminders for young people. Proceeds from the book will benefit UNICEF’s programs for children in the Philippines and around the world.

The Children First! Storybooks launch was made possible through the support of SM North EDSA and SM Cares. Visit the Children First! Storybooks Illustrations Exhibit at the 3rd level, The Block, SM North EDSA in Quezon City from February 20 to 25, 2016 and get the entire collection of Children First! Storybooks by donating to UNICEF. For more details on UNICEF’s work and programs, visit www.unicef.ph.

Bangkok Claims Top Spot in MasterCard’s Inaugural Index

Inbound arrivals to Bangkok grew 28.6% in 2015,
with three Thai destinations securing top 10 positions

Bangkok has increased its lead over the pack as the region’s most popular destination, with international overnight visitors breaking the 20 million mark for the first time, according to the results of the inaugural MasterCard Asia Pacific Destinations Index.  Second place was a close fight between Singapore and Tokyo.

The inaugural index provides a ranking of 167 destinations across Asia Pacific. Thailand dominated the top ten destinations, taking three of the top ten rankings, with Phuket securing fifth place (9.3 million) and the coastal city of Pattaya coming in at eighth place (8.1 million).

Half of the top 10 destinations saw 10 percent growth or more in international overnight visitor numbers between 2014 and 2015 – Osaka (54.0 percent), Tokyo (53.2 percent), Bangkok (28.6 percent), Phuket (15.5 percent) and Pattaya (10.0 percent).

The top 20 destinations of Asia Pacific represent around half of all international overnight arrivals to the 167 Asia Pacific destinations covered by the Index.

The top ten Asia Pacific destinations ranked by international overnight visitor numbers: Bangkok – 21.9 million,  Singapore – 11.8 million, Tokyo – 11.8 million,  Kuala Lumpur – 11.3 million, Phuket – 9.3 million, Seoul – 9.2 million, Hong Kong – 8.3 million, Pattaya – 8.1 million, Bali – 7.2 million, and Osaka – 6.5 million.

Asia Pacific’s tourism industry is the largest in the world by total contribution to GDP, having overtaken Europe in 2014. Tourism contributed US$2.27 trillion to Asia Pacific economies and 153.7 million jobs in 2015.

Bangkok also ranked number one in total expenditure at US$15.2 billion, with Seoul (US$14.4 billion) coming in second place, followed by Singapore (US$14.1 billion), Tokyo (US$11.9 billion) and Kuala Lumpur (US$10.5 billion).

The top ten Asia Pacific destinations by total expenditure are: Bangkok – US$15.2 billion, Seoul – US$14.4billion, Singapore  – US$14.1 billion, Tokyo – US$11.9 billion, Kuala Lumpur – US$10.5 billion, Bali – US$10.3 billion, Taipei – US$9.5 billion, Phuket – US$8.0 billion, Hong Kong – US$6.7 billion, Sydney – US$6.0 billion.

Of the top 20 destinations by total expenditure per day, Shanghai (US$269 per day) welcomed the biggest spenders, followed by Beijing (US$262 per day), Seoul (US$258 per day), Singapore (US$255 per day) and Hong Kong (US$240 per day).

Matthew Driver, Group Executive, Global Products & Solutions, Asia Pacific, MasterCard, commented, “The tourism industry in Asia Pacific is continuing to show robust growth with an increasing number of destinations receiving well over five million visitors a year, driven by increased consumer wealth, particularly from China. Our Asia Pacific Destinations Index (APDI) 2015 reveals the continued resilience of the Thailand market for tourism led by a resurgent Bangkok, as well as the return to popularity of Japan for visitors as demonstrated by the more than 50 percent growth year on year in its top four destinations. Providing in-depth analysis of overnight arrivals in 167 Asia Pacific destinations, the APDI can help businesses and governments better understand the underlying components of in-bound tourism demand, so they can plan investment to ensure the sustainable development of the tourism industry. This is becoming increasingly important as tourist numbers continue to rise, as at current growth rates, Asia Pacific will have more than 500 million tourist arrivals by 2020.”

The battle is bigger in IMAX! Take your first look at exclusive IMAX poster of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” which has just been unveiled by Warner Bros.

From director Zack Snyder comes “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” starring Oscar winner Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne and Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent in the characters’ first big-screen pairing.

And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Directed by Zack Snyder, the film also stars Oscar nominees Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, and Laurence Fishburne as Perry White; Oscar winners Jeremy Irons as Alfred, and Holly Hunter as Senator Finch; and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince.
