FIL-AM DEAN DEVLIN MARKS DIRECTING DEBUT WITH EPIC THRILLER “GEOSTORM”

Filipino-American filmmaker Dean Devlin (writer/producer, Independence Day) makes his feature film directorial debut with Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming epic thriller Geostorm (in Philippine cinemas Thursday, October 12).

In the film, after an unprecedented series of natural disasters threatened the planet, the world’s leaders came together to create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe. But now, something has gone wrong—the system built to protect the Earth is attacking it, and it’s a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything...and everyone along with it.

Geostorm stars Gerard Butler (Olympus Has Fallen, 300), Jim Sturgess (21), Abbie Cornish (Limitless), Alexandra Maria Lara (Rush), Daniel Wu (Warcraft: The Beginning), Eugenio Derbez (Miracles from Heaven), with Oscar nominees Ed Harris (mother!) and Andy Garcia (Ocean’s Thirteen).

An edge-of-your-seat, heart-pounding ride for movie audiences who enjoy a ticking-clock mystery rife with conspiracy and wrapped in pure escapist fare of epic proportions, Geostorm has it all: from blistering underground infernos to desert-freezing ice storms and everything in between.

Devlin reveals that the idea for the story originated when his daughter, then six, asked him to explain climate change. “In the simplest way, she asked me, ‘Why can’t we just build a machine that fixes it?’ That sparked all these ideas in my mind about what would happen if we did build just such a machine. And what if something went horribly wrong? That became the ‘what if’ story—what if we wait too long to deal with extreme climate change? What if we don’t? What if we could create this amazing machine to control the weather around the entire planet? And what would we do if it went rogue?”

As the story unfolds in the film, two years have passed since the complex web of interconnected satellites—dubbed Dutch Boy—went online. The years have been tranquil ones, until now. Unexplained malfunctions in the highly sophisticated system are now causing, rather than preventing, deadly weather patterns never before seen by mankind: ice and snow in the deserts of Afghanistan, smoldering under the streets of Hong Kong, and cyclones in India, to name a few.
Dutch Boy is out of control, wreaking havoc across the globe.

“Dean has a mindset that comes from working on big epics like ‘Independence Day,’ so when he put his mind to the subject of global warming, he came up with a timely twist on the genre classic by setting it against the backdrop of a political thriller and filling it with unnatural natural disasters,” notes producer David Ellison. “In other words, within our story, the science is sound—it’s the people controlling it who are the problem.”

“For me, entertainment should be just that—entertaining—and not necessarily hit you over the head with a message,” Devlin observes. “But I also feel that science fiction works better, has more of an impact, when you have something to say. Hopefully, we’ll take audiences on a roller coaster ride across the planet and off into space, and leave them having had a fantastic time, and maybe just a bit more curious about the world around them.”

Geostorm is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment company.

Keep calm through Christmas with Ascof

Holiday Season is fast approaching when you start hearing christmas songs inside the malls as early as September. Along with the cold weather comes the cough and flu that is associated with the christmas season.

Taking pride in having the longest Christmas celebration in the world.

Holiday activities like shopping, reunions, partying, and traveling result in stress, which, in turn weakens our immune system and renders us prone to catching common ailments like cough.

To make the most out of the festive season, it is important to stay healthy. And for veteran actor-model Ian Veneracion, this means maintaining an active lifestyle despite the temptation to stay in bed all day long brought by the cool weather. This is why when he is not facing the camera, Ian makes sure that he keeps a balanced diet and engages himself in regular physical activities.

While he admits that he does not go to the gym, Ian shares that he maintains his physically fit body by engaging himself in his favorite competitive sports like football, basketball, tennis, swimming, sailing, motocross, martial arts, and boxing. He also highlights the importance of getting enough sleep, eating properly, and maintaining a clean environment to avoid cough during the holidays.

But when cough already sets in, Ian prefers using a natural remedy like Ascof (Vitex negundo  L. Lagundi Leaf) to ensure that he and his family get instant relief. A father of three, Veneracion says he places his trust in Ascof, the pioneer and innovative natural cough remedy in the Philippines, because it is safe and effective, with no adverse effects in the clinical trials of the syrup.

“I definitely believe in the product kasi safe s’ya. I even drank a real shot while shooting the commercial,” Veneracion attests. “People should trust Ascof because it’s a natural remedy that you can take even when you are just starting to show the symptoms of cough. Hindi ka matatakot.” Ascof is made from 100 percent organically grown lagundi leaves, making it a natural, safe, and effective remedy for cough and bronchial asthma.

Veneracion prefers using the variant Ascof Forte Menthol Syrup because of its ‘hagod-menthol’ soothing effect. “There are other variants both for kids and adults – but my personal favorite is Ascof Forte Menthol Sugar Free Syrup because it does not raise my blood sugar. It’s a suitable variant for health-conscious consumers like me, and for diabetic patients as well,” he says.

While it is easy to just pig out and slack off during the holidays, Veneracion asserts that we must maintain a healthy diet and an active lifestyle to help boost our immune system and avoid getting sick.

“Balance is always key. You need to work, pero you need to have fun. You need alone time, but you also need to engage in physical and spiritual activities. We observe a healthy lifestyle to prevent cough, pero kapag tinamaan tayo ng ubo, take Ascof, of course.”

Watch Happy Death Day on October 18

Blumhouse (Split, Get Out, Whiplash) produces an original and inventive rewinding thriller in Universal Pictures' Happy Death Day, in which college student Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe, La La Land) relives the day of her murder with both its unexceptional details and terrifying end until she discovers her killer’s identity.

Tree is a blissfully self-centered co-ed whose world revolves around just one person. When she hazily wakes up on the morning of her birthday in the bed of supposed one-night stand Carter (Israel Broussard, The Bling Ring), she soon discovers that today is anything but ordinary.
Stumbling back to her sorority—and into the expected judgment of roommate Lori (Ruby Modine, (TV’s Shameless) and house president Danielle (newcomer Rachel Matthews)—Tree rushes through the routine of an average student. But as she experiences everything from the typical activists on the quad to her office-hours fling with professor Gregory (Charles Aitken, TV’s The Knick), she can’t help but feel that she has seen and lived this day before.

Just when Tree is ready to say goodnight to this bizarre birthday, she is brutally murdered by a masked stranger…only to wake up back in the room of the one person alive who also believes she’s experiencing something eerily impossible.

As Tree daily finds herself daily getting closer to her real killer, she must shed her inhibitions in order to face everyone’s biggest fear. If she succeeds in unmasking her murderer and stopping this madness, she will hopefully end what has become her personal hell. If she can’t, she will be stuck in an insane loop, reliving a ghoulish nightmare that has become her death day.

Joining director Christopher Landon (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones) and producer Jason Blum (Split, Get Out) behind the camera are a talented group of collaborators, including writer Scott Lobdell, director of photography Toby Oliver (upcoming Insidious: The Last Key), production designer Cecele M. De Stefano (TV’s Empire), editor Gregory Plotkin (Paranormal Activity series), costume designer Meagan McLaughlin Luster (10 Cloverfield Lane) and composer Bear McCreary (10 Cloverfield Lane).

Happy Death Day is distributed in the Philippines by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.

The Rise and Shine, a mix of citrus and elemi oils, focuses and bolsters energy. The Stress Away relaxes tired and tense muscles thanks to its soothing blend of eucalyptus, ginger, cypress, juniper berry, wintergreen, menthol, and camphor oils.

A good night’s rest can go a long way in your grooming ritual. The Sweet Dreams essential oil has a naturally soothing scent that will swiftly put you at ease before you sleep.

There’s also the Breathe Easy whose eucalyptus and elemi oil blend eases your nasal passages and the Bug Me Not, which repels insects with its medley of citronella, lemongrass, and neem. The latter two also come in handy natural balms and are perfect for children

#F1Cares: F1 Hotel Manila Community Engagement Programme

Without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community,”

F1 Hotel Manila carried out its first corporate social responsibility last September 2, 2017. “F1 Cares: Community Engagement Programme”, which was led by the hotel’s execom, was done to highlight the company’s great compassion towards social awareness.

Being an institution that values its responsibility not only to the company, but also to community’s environmental and social wellbeing, F1 Hotel Manila reached out to organizations that help the elderly and deaf community.

The hotel chose two community organizations for the “F1 Cares” campaign. Talking Hands, a deaf education center, is an organization that provides programs and services to children with hearing-impairment and their families through the project: ESTE- Ending Silence Through Education Programs. GRACES, or Golden Reception & Action Center for the Elderly and other Special Cases (formerly as Golden Acres Home for the Elderly), is one of four homes for the elderly under the DSWD, which houses 288 senior citizens rescued from the streets or from families that can no longer take care of them.

Aside from providing humble donations, F1 Hotel Manila aims to continue a strong relationship with these beneficiaries, by planning to extend internships to Talking Hands students, and conducting activities with Grace’s. PSID celebrates Golden Anniversary with a G.O.L.D. exhibit

In 1964, a young US educated designer Edith Oliveros joined Cancio-Calma and Associates. In the early stages of her career with firm, her strong presence in the design field created a stir when a number of young women expressed an interest in interior design and architecture. These young women mostly wives and daughters belonging to the upper class families learned about the craft first hand by going to jobsites or attending coordination meeting with clients.

At that time she was teaching design at the Philippine Womens University and her employers suggested that it would probably be an excellent idea to consider a more formal classroom program for those who what to learn about interior design and Edith became part of a committee that develop an academic certificate program of the study and practice of interior design

The curriculum used then was based on the one being offered by the New York School of interior design that includes fundamental subjects such as elements and principles of Interior Design as well as Mechanical Drawing, Art History Color Theory,  Perspective Drawing and Color Rendering. Classroom learning was augmented with practical, hands on experience in Cancio-Calma’s furniture company and showrooms.

At that time the straightforward approach to design education unimpeded by academic prerequisites were considered revolutionary as it facilitated learning for those who were more mature than regular college students.

It was in June of 1967 when the Philippine School for Interior Design first opened its doors in Makati and the school rapidly grew in statue  with its rising number of enrollees and its highly professional and dynamic learning environment that helped elevate its reputation as the leader in interior design education.

Fast forward five decades later, As the PSID now celebrates its Golden Anniversary, it looks back at its illustrious past with an exhibit aptly named G.O.L.D. featuring the works of its 72 interior design  graduating students in 3 galleries of 24 elegant sophisticated and excellently designed interiors.

Five decades of excellence in Interior Design education, and still, the Philippine School of Interior Design continuously soars and remains to be the undisputed premiere school for Interior Design. In its 50 years, the school has produced some of the finest interior designers in the industry and students who continuously top the board exams every year. This illustrious past meets the future movers and shakers of the design world as PSID mounts “GOLD: Glamorous, Opulent, and Luxurious Designs”, a graduation exhibit slated on October 1-31 at Uptown Bonifacio Mall in Bonifacio Global City.

The Vito Selma Chair

As the school celebrates its golden anniversary, GOLD will showcase luxurious and glamorous designs that also celebrate comfort, functionality, opulence, and cost efficiency.

Co-presented by Megaworld, and mounted in cooperation with Boysen, Schema, Shell Canvas, La Europa, Designery, Daikin, and Tecson Flowers, the exhibit is set to showcase an array of 24 exquisitely-designed spaces that highlight the trends of the decades in which the school has offered design students quality training mixed with the aesthetic of luxury, opulence, and glamour.

For the first time in PSID’s history of graduation exhibits, the school’s students, alumni, and faculty have joined forces and showcase their brightest design ideas for GOLD. The exhibit will be divided into three galleries.

The Students Gallery will exhibit interiors conceptualized and constructed by the 72 pupils of PSID Advanced Class of 2017, as well as students from the PSID-AHLEN Institute. The graduating students will showcase design concepts that capture the essence of luxury, opulence, and glamour as finishes and materials take center stage to elicit an ambiance that caters to sophistication and sense of style.

Meanwhile, the Alumni Gallery is a “blast from the past” of sorts with already established PSID alumni such as Chitz Legaspi and Lalyn Nivera participating again in a graduation exhibit. It is a way for the alumni to relive the challenges and experiences of creating a booth for the graduation exhibit and apply what they have learned, both from the school and in the practice to evoke a sense of nostalgia.

Also a first for the PSID exhibit is the Faculty Gallery. Select professors and instructors of the PSID, namely Michael Pizarro, Mark Perez and Vianca Anonuevo, Gino and Karen Abrera, Jigs Adefuin, Mary Anne Bulanadi, and Chat Fores will also showcase their works to help commemorate the school’s anniversary. Pitted side-by-side with the works of PSID students both past and present, the Faculty Gallery will be a testament to PSID’s elite design training.

“GOLD” is a carefully planned, extensively researched exhibit that perfectly celebrates PSID’s five decades of design education. For the past half-century, PSID has been known to produce groundbreaking exhibits that become the benchmark of interior design shows in the academe, and are considered go-to events for architects, fellow interior designers, design enthusiasts, and the general public to learn more about world-class Filipino design and innovative interiors that come to life. PSID brings interior design a notch higher each year, presenting exhibits that challenge the graduating batch to showcase their repertoire of design skills and the PSID mark of excellence.

This is one of my personal favorite booth from the PSID's GOLD exhibit. Booth No.17's DEN by Gino and Karen Abrera. The Kintsuku Room.

JACKIE CHAN IS MASTER WU IN “THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE”

This year's recepient of the Honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement, Jackie Chan stars as the venerable Master Wu in Warner Bros. Pictures' all-new, big-screen event, The LEGO NINJAGO Movie.

Master Wu is a bearded, white-robed, flute-playing wise man with an anthology of zen-ish axioms and a surprisingly sharp tongue, who producer Dan Lin describes as “the soul and emotional anchor of the movie, and the counterpart to the villain, Garmadon.”

This wise, all-knowing mentor promises to train the ninja in the ancient art of Spinjitzu fighting, but first, he challenges them not only to balance on rocks but to find the balance within themselves. He carries a big stick, which he plays like a flute. Years of meditation have not softened this warrior’s edges, or his ability to crack himself up, and Master Wu is full of surprises.

Indeed, seeing promise in the young ninja, Lloyd, and knowing that NINJAGO City needs a champion, “Master Wu is helping Lloyd to achieve his destiny,” says Chan.

In the film, the battle for NINJAGO City calls to action young Master Builder Lloyd, aka the Green Ninja, along with his friends, who are all secret ninja warriors. Led by Master Wu, as wise-cracking as he is wise, they must defeat evil warlord Garmadon, The Worst Guy Ever, who also happens to be Lloyd’s dad. Pitting mech against mech and father against son, the epic showdown will test this fierce but undisciplined team of modern-day ninjas, who must learn to check their egos and pull together to unleash their inner power.

“Jackie Chan brings a lot of comedy to Wu, and he’s really loveable, the way his voice comes through,” Lin says. “He adds a great deal to the emotional spectrum of the movie, whether it’s heart or humor, and he also brings a level of authenticity, because we really want this to feel like an Asian-inspired martial arts movie, and Jackie was rigorous in overseeing the action and making sure we were doing it in an accurate way.”
“Master Wu is Garmadon’s brother, but also his enemy,” Chan explains with mock gravity. “Master Wu is Lloyd’s uncle, but also his teacher. So, any way you look at it, it’s a complex relationship, very tricky, and very interesting.”

Wu and Garmadon’s long-brewing animosity ultimately erupts atop a rope bridge over a rushing river, which Chan cites as his favorite fight in the film.

Chan not only stars in the film, but also brought his renowned stunt team to choreograph the fights—bearing his trademark of rapid-fire, spectacularly executed moves, deftly undercut with a sense of humor. How do animated kicks, flips and jumps compare to the real world? “You can create all kinds of movement, all kinds of impossible things, and through the animation, make it 10 times better and more fun,” the genuine master declares.

Moreover, acknowledging a catalogue of injuries nearly as famous as his lifetime of action roles, Chan laughingly adds, “This way I don’t have to do my own stunts, and no one gets hurt.”

In Philippine cinemas September 27, The LEGO NINJAGO Movie is distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Choose the cooking oil that is best for your heart—NutriAsia Golden Fiesta Canola Oil!

Heart-friendly is probably the last thing on your mind when you reach for the cooking oil in your kitchen shelf, with health buffs giving it a bad rap all these years. It’s time, then, to set things straight: while some cooking oils put your cardiovascular health at risk, others provide essential good fats that our bodies need.

In fact, did you know that some cooking oils reduce your risk of having coronary heart disease and other cardiovascular ailments?

One of the healthiest oils in the market that nutrition experts recommended is canola oil, which contains heart-healthy nutrients called phytosterols, and which is now being offered by leading oil brand Golden Fiesta by NutriAsia.

Golden Fiesta Canola Oil is a rich source of the cholesterol-reducing phytosterols, an all-natural plant extract that can reduce your body’s cholesterol level by up to 15 percent. Scientific studies and trials show that consumption of two grams of phytosterols per day has the potential of diminishing the risk of coronary heart disease, which is one of the leading causes of death worldwide.

According to the 7th DOST-ENRI Nutrition Survey, Filipinos become vulnerable to heart disease as early as age 20 due to unhealthy diets and an increasingly stressful work environment.

The claim that phytosterol-containing food may reduce the risk of heart disease, as sanctioned by the United States Food and Drug Administration (USDA), bolsters the benefits of consuming Golden Fiesta Canola Oil, the substantial phytosterol contents of which help ease the intestinal absorption of dietary cholesterol and facilitate the excretion of biliary cholesterol in the feces.

Made from the seeds of canola flowers, Golden Fiesta Canola Oil is also rich in Omega 3 and Omega 6, which are also beneficial in lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and some types of cancer when combined with a healthy diet and exercise.

Compared to other vegetable oils, canola oil has a low level of uric acid, glucosinolates, and saturated fatty acids and bad fats, making it one of the healthiest and more widely used oils in the market.

So the next time you go the supermarket, choose the cooking oil that is best for your heart—NutriAsia Golden Fiesta Canola Oil!

NutriAsia Golden Fiesta Canola Oil is a good source of phytosterols. Two grams of phytosterols per day may potentially reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.

King Sue Home Party Planning Tips

Partying is fun with all the food and festive decors you get to share with family and friends.  Hosting one at your own home—with the budget, menu, and motif to consider plus guests to entertain— could be both exciting and challenging, But if you have the knack for organizing events and if you want to personalize your get-togethers, parties will always come surprisingly easy. KING SUE believes that whatever the occasion you’re celebrating at home, parties should always be  memorable.

Here are some tips for home party planning 101 courtesy of King Sue:

1. START WITH A CHECKLIST.  Make a list of logistics (guests  menu, theme, costs). Then do a day-by-day tasking schedule so you would know what needs to be done on a specific date.

2. GET HELP USING SOCIAL MEDIA. Technology is the easiest way to bring everyone together. All you have to do is to create an event page on your social media account and post the invite.

3. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX FOR THEMES AND DECORS. Kiddie parties are the easiest to plan because it’s typical of them to choose their favorite cartoon character, activity or color. But there are kids who want something different. A “royal celebration” for a little prince’s first birthday would include crowns, clowns qne a festivity fit for a “king”. For your little miss, a ballerina-themed party is a fancier concept.

Aside from the usual videoke sessions, adults love parties that show what they dig most. An outdoor picnic or barbecue party is perfect for an outdoorsy person while a 1960s party is best for a 60-year-old celebrant. Other unique concepts can be based on  hobbies and interests.

4. FAST EASY TO PREPARE FOOD! Aside from great company, people remember a party because of its good food. And when it comes to personalizing your party, planning the menu, and cooking the dishes, KING SUE got you covered. Have mini booths or food carts that serve kiddie favorites such as cotton candies, fries, lollipops, and ice cream. Kids  love a hotdog stand. So be ready to skewer some King Sue Hotdogs  and  marshmallows. Adults prefer their own version of the hotdog stand, except that they get to eat their way with some grilled King Sue German Franks, Hungarian-Style and Old English Sausages.

For luaus, Hawaiian sliders are spot on, with slices of King Sue Hawaiian or Pina-sliced ham,  cheese and pineapple slices. Assemble King Sue Cold cuts like bologna, sweet or spiced ham, salami and pepperoni. Add chunks of your favorite cheese, macadamia, walnuts or  pistachio nuts, grapes and bread. A nice bottle of wine completes the picture.

Everyone loves spaghetti with lots of meat! So aside from ground beef, be sure to add King Sue Luncheon meat to satisfy their craving. Should you wish to serve Filipino dishes, King Sue has Pinoy local favorites Chicken Relleno, Sisig, Garlic Longganisa,  Chicken Tocino, Pork Tocino, and Chorizo Filipino that balikbayan guests will love.

5. CAPTURE THE MEMORIES. Do a gallery or exhibit of sorts for the occasion. Display photos of the celebrant. There are DIY/craft stores that sell stylish frames, colored strings, and trendy pins where you can attach the photos to and hang them near the buffet table. Take lots of pictures during the party and post them in your event page afterwards.
