Smart widens lead in LTE speeds nationwide - OpenSignal
PLDT wireless arm Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) is increasing its lead in LTE/4G speeds nationwide, according to crowd-sourced data gathered by wireless coverage research firm OpenSignal.
The latest OpenSignal results, which covered the months of September to November, showed that Smart has established what it called “clear leadership” in LTE/4G across the country, with nationwide average LTE download speeds of 11.7 Mbps (vs. 7.3 Mbps for that of the competitor).
Smart also led across all measured areas, with 13.2 Mbps in National Capital Region (NCR)/Metro Manila, 7.7 Mbps in the Visayas, and 12.1 Mbps in South Luzon, compared with its competitor which, based on the results, registered speeds of 8.2 Mbps, 6.8 Mbps and 6.3 Mbps, respectively.
“The latest OpenSignal results show that our investments in and focus on network improvement are bearing fruit. The continuous expansion of our LTE and 3G networks is bringing a better experience to our customers across the country,” said Mario G. Tamayo, PLDT and Smart Senior Vice President for Network Planning and Engineering.
“By continuing to lead the way in bringing better, world-class mobile internet connectivity to the Philippines, PLDT and Smart are able to offer a wider array of digital services and life solutions, as well as make the best video, social media and gaming experience more accessible to our customers,” said Eric R. Big improvements in coverage
In terms of coverage, the latest results showed significant improvements in both 3G and LTE availability, with double-digit year-on-year improvements registered for LTE coverage in Metro Manila, Southern Luzon and the Visayas. Nationwide, Smart’s LTE availability improved from 35.86% in the January 2017 report to 58.07%, the report said.
In parallel, 3G coverage also improved across the areas measured, with nationwide 3G availability improving from 67.89% to 74.45%.
“Compared to last year, the OpenSignal report says Smart has more than doubled its lead in LTE speeds across all areas, while improvements across regions have also been noted in terms of 3G speeds as a result of our extensive network improvement efforts,” Tamayo added.
The OpenSignal results were corroborated by recent internal tests, which showed better download speeds in Southern Luzon. Median download speeds of 18.5 Mbps were posted in Quezon province, while speeds of 17.1 Mbps were recorded in Batangas.
In Metro Manila, recent internal tests in Parañaque, for example, recorded median LTE download speeds of 17.9 Mbps, while median download speeds of 27.6 Mbps were posted in Caloocan. In Taguig, Smart LTE posted median download speeds of 18.6 Mbps.
LTE speeds in Cebu, meanwhile, averaged 24 Mbps, while LTE speeds in Davao were at 34 Mbps on average, also based on recent internal tests.
Fastest LTE in the country
In 2016, Smart started to deploy LTE in multiple frequencies including low band spectrum such as 700 MHz, initially in Boracay and in Metro Davao. This accelerated LTE deployment has enabled Smart to also roll-out LTE-Advanced (LTE-A), which allows for even greater speeds and capacity through its capability called Carrier Aggregation (CA).
CA allows for the combination two or more radio frequency bands in order to deliver bigger bandwidth and much faster data speeds to mobile users.
At the beginning of the year, Smart announced that it was further boosting LTE speeds in the country by rolling out LTE-A in more areas of the country. This includes the deployment of four-component (4CC) carrier aggregation, which features the combination of four separate spectrum bands.
Last year, Smart’s LTE and 3G expansion program initially covered Metro Cebu, Rizal and Metro Manila and has since proceeded to other parts of the country. This has been complemented by a 3G rollout in several frequency bands as well. As a result, the company expects to fulfill ahead of schedule its commitment to the National Telecommunications Commission to cover over 90% of the country’s cities and municipalities with mobile broadband using LTE and 3G by 2019.

McDonalds to start accepting cashless payments with PayMaya Partnership

Getting a PayMaya account is easy. All one has to do is to download the app or start a chat with @PayMayaOfficial in FB Messenger to be able to create an account. Loading up their PayMaya accounts is also hassle-free, given the ubiquity of over 15,000 top-up facilities nationwide. These include Robinsons Department Store Business Centers, SM Business Services, Cebuana Lhuillier, ExpressPay, TouchPay kiosks, 7-Eleven, ExpressPay, Palawan Pawnshops, Shopwise, Wellcome, 2Go outlets, Petron stations along NLEX, and Smart Padala centers down to sari-sari stores in grassroots communities, and Unionbank ATMs.
McDonald's customers in the Philippines can expect a more convenient way to pay for their McDonald’s favorites as the quick-service restaurant chain starts to roll out over-the-counter Mastercard and Visa card transactions in select branches through a collaboration with PayMaya Philippines.
Over 40 McDonald’s restaurants nationwide have already begun accepting card payments for all types of Mastercard and Visa credit, debit, and prepaid cards, including PayMaya Visa cards and Smart Mastercard.

Tickets for CELINE DION LIVE 2018 in Manila will go on sale to the public beginning 18 January at 10 a.m. Members of TeamCeline will have access to purchase tickets before the public through an advance pre-sale from 16 January to 17 January. The tour is produced by AEG Presents and co-produced by Ovation Productions in Manila.

Lin Shaye faces her greatest fears and destroy the immortal Key Face in Insidious: The Last Key

Lin Shaye was thrilled with the opportunity to play Elise as a badass. “I’m learning more about Elise through each film,” says the actress. “When we first meet her in Insidious, she’s a confident clairvoyant, an empath. She takes on other people’s feelings very strongly, which allows her to respond to them deeply. She’s a seer with a gift that she didn’t ask for, but one that she was born with.”
“People were apparently very taken by me as a hero,” Shaye adds, “which was very surprising to me.”
“It’s been fascinating to watch Lin’s evolution as Elise over this series,” says producer Jason Blum. “We meet Elise as this enigmatic scientist in a complex field…who serves the story as a channel for the Lambert family to reach their son. But as we learn more about her, we see this haunting unfold—one that all plays out in Lin’s riveting eyes. In The Last Key, we finally get to witness what created Elise’s genius, and how she has been driven for a lifetime to help others—innocents tortured by this unspeakable demon.”
We first met Dr. Rainier in 2010’s Insidious, when, alongside sidekicks Tucker and Specs, she helps Josh and Renai Lambert draw their son Dalton from the deep recesses of The Further—a nightmarish mirror vision of our existence. There, dark spirits ooze from unspeakable corners and attempt to re-enter our realm by any means necessary. As Elise uses her gifts to free Dalton, the demon that possessed Josh when he was just a boy escapes from The Further and kills Elise. But is she really dead?
In Insidious: Chapter 2 the Lamberts are still reeling from the psychic abduction of their son and the loss of Elise. When they move back into Josh’s boyhood home, Josh again becomes possessed by the demon residing in the house and lying in wait. To save his father, Dalton reaches into The Further and finds Elise, who is still alive fighting an eternal battle to free trapped souls, rescue Josh and end the family curse.
Elise returns to the land of the living in Insidious: Chapter 3, which takes us back to a time before the Lamberts. Called out of retirement to help Quinn Brenner, a teen whose attempts to connect with her dead mother go horribly wrong, Elise is reminded of her sworn duty to use her paranormal gifts for the good of mankind.
Insidious: The Last Key takes us with Elise back to her girlhood home. But when the ghastliest haunted house Elise has ever entered proves to be the one where she was raised, Elise must face her greatest fears and destroy the immortal Key Face—the demon she set free so many years before. Vanquish him on his terrain, and she will free trapped souls for good. Fail, and the house she barely escaped as a child will claim her soul for eternity.

Mr. Pure Energy Gary Valenciano and Popstar Royalty Sarah Geronimo join forces for a one-of-a-kind collaboration that capture the joy-filled stories of Filipinos to mark the 40th anniversary of the country’s number one fast food chain.
Entitled ‘Apat na Dekada’, the upbeat and heart-warming song encapsulates four decades of joyful moments shared with generations of Filipinos who have made Jollibee a part of their lives. The song was composed by Thyro Alfaro in collaboration with Jollibee’s creative agency, McCann World Group Philippines.
For the past 40 years, Jollibee has been a home to stars who have served as their brand ambassadors. The stellar list includes Sarah and Gary who headlined some of the most memorable Jollibee campaigns but none quite as special as the 40th anniversary anthem.
One of the brand’s first endorsers, Gary shared how it feels to have reached full circle, “I was happy then, overjoyed now because it is 40 years later and I’m doing something with them again.”
For her part, Sarah has been a part of the Jollibee family since 2005 and has since become one of the country’s biggest superstars, growing a wider audience in the same way that Jollibee has continued to spread its reach in the country and across the globe.
While recording the song, the two artists felt waves of nostalgia as they looked back at their own Jollibee moments with their loved ones.
“‘Yung entirety nung message nung kanta, inisa-isa niya ‘yung simple joys of life, ‘yung simple pero masagana, sincere at totoong-totoo kasi ako mismo nakita ko ‘yun, naranasan ko ‘yun, at naramdaman ko ‘yun,” shared Sarah.
Because the song struck a chord in both singers, they agreed it would also easily resonate among many Filipinos. The Popstar Royalty added, “Kasi ‘yung Jollibee it’s not just a brand. Pinapahalagahan talaga ‘yung values ng pamilyang Pilipino, at saka yung importansya ng saya ng pagiging isang buong pamilya. Iyon ‘yung dahilan kung bakit naging malapit sa puso nating mga Pilipino ‘yung Jollibee.”
According to Gary, he was very happy that the brand had gone global. “I think that they’ve really been able to master that touch of going out of their way, maybe even bending backwards, to stick to what is Filipino, through and through, and it’s now creating an impact. Now people are seeing the consistency and I think that’s something I commend them for. So I think expanding into other countries is not only going to bring a piece of the product to them but it’s also going to bring a piece of the Filipino heart to people all over the world,” he shared.
