Spuds and Dairy Culinary Cup Crowns First Champs

It was a culinary battle for the ages, as Potatoes USA and Real California Milk brought together some of the best chefs and culinary students in the country to whip up outstanding Potato and Dairy creations for the first ever Spuds and Dairy Culinary Cup!

The cooking competition, presented by Potatoes USA and the California Milk Advisory Board (Real California Milk), was held last Friday, September 6, 2019 at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall. The event was hosted by radio DJ Chico Garcia and mommy blogger/influencer Michelle Aventajado.

The exciting competition featured 10 teams made up of one professional chef and one culinary student. Each team had to draw from one of the five meal categories: Appetizer, Brunch, Main, Dessert and Bar Food and prepare a potato dish and a dairy dish.

Chef Rosebud Benitez planning their potato and dairy recipes with her
mentee Christian Cabacungan of PACE Academy.

The teams were given 30 minutes for grocery shopping and a budget of Php 5,000. They had 1 hour and 30 minutes to prep, cook and plate their dishes.

To make things even more challenging, only the students could do all the prepping, mixing, cooking and plating. The chefs were not allowed to touch the ingredients nor prepare any of the food. They could only guide, give tips and taste the food.

Chef Robby Goco checks how much cooking time is left as his partner, Miko Manzano of the Lyceum of the Philippines, hurries to make the finishing touches.

At the end of the cook-off, the winner of the Best U.S. Potato Dish was the team of Chef Victor Barangan and Ria Garcia (student of Enderun Colleges). Their winning dish was Potato Royale with Potato Foam, Potato Tuile and Scotch Egg (Breakfast / Brunch Category). They each brought home a whopping Php 100,000.00 cash prize!

The event was such a success that I have a feeling they’re doing it again next year! Kudos to Potatoes USA and Real California Milk!

See you at the 3-day CoCo Chill Camp, SM Mega Fashion Hall from Sept 17-19

I have been a fan of milk tea since 2012. I have discovered  chai tea when I was in Dubai.  My Arabic employer introduced a hot cup of chai tea to me during an afternoon break. Since then, it has become an instant favorite. Chai is a combination of black tea, steamed milk, and various Indian herbs and spices. The taste was spicy, creamy, warming and its addicting.

When I got back in Manila in 2013. milk tea with toppings became the craze. I have tasted it all from oolong, green tea, black tea, jasmine, white tea, chamomile, roasted dried tea flower leaves. I have also made rounds to all the milk tea shops here in Manila.  But nothing comes close to Cult favorite milk tea brand Coco, that is if youre a fan of milk teas with toppings (boba, pearl and pudding)

When Coco introduced 2 ladies and 3 buddies milk tea variant. It has become an instant favorite aside from the mountain tea, when I am feeling under the weather.

I love that you can chewed 3 toppings, (black and white pearl, grass jellies)  in one drink. It was creamy, not so sweet, (because I always customize my order).

The trick to cut back on calories is to ask the cashier for no sugar when you order for any teas.

Toppings like pearls, puddings and  grass jellies are sweet enough to flavor up your drinks.

WWE Clash of Champions: WWE Women’s Champion, Bayley squares off against Charlotte Flair on Friday, September 20th, 2019

WWE SmackDown! makes its return to the Philippines with a star-studded show at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Friday, September 20th, 2019. Among the matches announced, alongside a Wrestlemania XXXV rematch, is an epic encounter between second-generation Superstar, Charlotte Flair and the current WWE SmackDown! Women’s Champion, Bayley.

Both women, together with Sasha Banks and current Raw Women’s Champion, Becky Lynch, make-up the Four Horsewomen. Their honor, passion, and skill gave way to the Women’s Revolution: a movement that legitimized the presence of women’s wrestling on a global stage. What was once regarded as an entertaining break between important matches has become a main event staple!

Early Beginnings of Women’s Wresting
Women’s wrestling dates back to the late 19th century. By 1937, Mildred Bourke rose to prominence as one of sports-entertainment’s most recognized talents, setting the pace for other women in the decades to come including WWE Hall of Famer, Mae Young.

In the 1980’s, as sports-entertainment reached global heights, women’s wrestling was firmly cemented as a popular attraction with fans. Cyndi Lauper’s collaborations with Hall of Famer, Captain Lou Albano, set the stage for the Rock ‘n’ Wrestling Connection that established stars such as former WWE Women’s Champion, Wendi Richter. At the same time, the sudden prominence of future WWE Legends such as Hulk Hogan and “Macho Man” Randy Savage introduced the world to valets such as Miss Elizabeth and “Sensational” Sherri.

The Age of Divas
By the turn of the century, the women of the WWE were regarded as pop culture icons known the world over as Divas. Led by the likes of Trish Status and Lita, the Divas of the WWE were beautiful and skilled sports-entertainers who consistently set the bar each time they entered the squared circle. In December 2004, Stratus and Lita made history when they collided on the main event of Monday Night Raw in a highly-revered classic for the WWE Women’s Championship.

As the decade progressed, the WWE Universe would see a number of popular Divas establish themselves with a string-of must see performances across WWE’s Monday Night Raw and SmackDown!. Unfortunately by 2012, most of the WWE’s most proficient in-ring Divas had retired from active competition and because of that, younger Divas did not have the opportunity to truly showcase their skill.

The Women’s Revolution & Evolution
In 2012, WWE established NXT as a system to introduce new talent before their main roster debut. That same year, veteran performer Sara Del Rey was signed to oversee the development of younger talent. Together, the combination would provide female sports-entertainers with the chance to showcase their skill before an eager and welcoming audience. Within a year, NXT would crown its first Women’s Champion in Paige, The “Anti-Diva”.

Later on, after Paige’s main roster breakthrough, Charlotte Flair, Bayley, Becky Lynch, and Sasha Banks would establish themselves as NXT’s most popular performers with their seemingly endless back-to-back streaks of show-stealing classics. In time, they were recognized as The Four Horsewomen of NXT; a standard of excellence inspired by The Four Horsemen, a legendary stable of elite sports-entertainers led by Charlotte’s father, “Nature Boy” Ric Flair.

By 2016, each of the Four Horsewomen had made it to the WWE’s main roster. Following a string of consecutive Wrestlemania classics and the call-up of additional talent from NXT, the WWE was now supported by a diverse cast that showcased the best female talent from every corner to the world.

Today, women are now at the forefront of sports entertainment. The last three years have seen a number of historical changes in the WWE that included an annual Women’s Royal Rumble match, the Mae Young Classic, and Evolution, the first all-women pay-per-view event. 2019 saw the biggest change yet when Becky Lynch captured both the SmackDown! and Raw Women’s Championship belts from Charlotte Flair and Ronda Rousey at the main event of Wrestlemania XXXV!

The Horsewomen Collide in Manila!
Hot off an amazing match at WWE Clash of Champions, WWE Women’s Champion, Bayley squares off against Charlotte Flair on Friday, September 20th, 2019, at the historic Smart Araneta Coliseum, in Quezon City. Chart-topping pop R&B artist Austin Mahone is set to return to Manila live on October 22, 2019 at the New Frontier Theater

Chart-topping pop R&B artist Austin Mahone is set to return to Manila live on October 22, 2019 at the New Frontier Theater. The much anticipated one-night-only show in the Philippines next month follows a series of sold-out concerts in Madrid, Osaka, Yokohama, Guangzhou, and Shanghai.

In 2011, Mahone started posting YouTube videos of himself performing song covers by artists such as Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars and Jason Mraz. The viral content created an impact significant enough to land him a high-profile deal with Cash Money Records, the label home of Drake and Lil Wayne. Mahone subsequently released his first single 11:11, followed by Say Somethin’ and Say You're Just A Friend. This unblemished hit streak lead him to debut on the road as the opening act for Taylor Swift's Red Tour and headline a series of major shows for MTV's Artist To Watch. The Secret, Mahone’s first EP, soared to No. 5 on the Billboard 200, along with crowd favorites All I Ever Need and Mmm Yeah featuring Pitbull which reached No. 2 on the iTunes Chart and Top 20 on the Billboard Pop Songs Chart.

His immediate rise to pop stardom earned Austin a number of accolades, including an MTV Video Music Award, MTV Europe Music Award, iHeartRadio Music Award, Radio Disney Music Award, Teen Choice Award, and Young Hollywood Award. As of today, he has amassed a solid online following over 30 million followers strong across all social media platforms.

Then came 2016 when the young vocalist’s solo music took a sudden turn from groovy teen pop towards romantic, 90’s pop-infused R&B, seeing Austin in recent collaboration with Grammy-nominated musicians, namely Hardwell, Flo Rida, Chris Brown, 2 Chainz, and Pitbull. Austin Mahone is all grown up, and so is the loyal fan base he has built over the years. There are more complex stories to be told, thus supplying his reinvention era with boundless sonic potential.

Earlier this year, the 23-year-old singer-songwriter introduced this brand-new sound with the retro track Why Don’t We penned by Charlie Puth. The instant bop easily accumulated more than 7 million streams on Spotify. In June, Austin followed it up with the fresh summer anthem Dancing With Nobody produced by Ian Kirkpatrick (Dua Lipa) and written by Sam Martin (Maroon 5) and Lindy Robbins (Demi Lovato). Austin shares, “I wanted Dancing With Nobody to be a fun, upbeat song that will make everyone feel that they just can’t help but get up and dance.” The stand-alone single has since racked up over 3 million Spotify streams, shaping 2019 to be the biggest year of his career.

Austin Mahone’s other hits include What About Love, Creatures of the Night, Send It featuring Rich Homie Quan, Shadow, Lady featuring Pitbull, Say Hi, among many others.

Austin Mahone Live in Manila 2019 is presented by Ovation Productions on its 40th Year Promoting the Biggest Names in Live Entertainment, in cooperation with TAP Edge: The Home of Live Action Sports. Ticket prices are P4,760/ 3,700/ 2,640 /1,590 available starting September 19 via www.ticketnet.com.ph and TicketNet outlets. For inquiries, call (02)911-5555 or (02)532-8883.

Action Against Hunger Introduces Love Food Give Food and ₱100 for 5 Challenge

On the frontline in the fight against malnutrition in nearly 50 countries is global humanitarian organization, Action Against Hunger (AAH). During a press event at Green Pastures in BGC, AAH announced initiatives that will encourage the public to help them reach more children with lifesaving treatment while developing long-term solutions to stop the them from becoming malnourished in the first place.

An estimated 33.4% or 4 Million Filipino children under 5 years old are malnourished according to the latest survey conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology. Malnutrition affects the whole nation by slowing down economic growth. The Philippines loses P220 billion annually due to child malnutrition according to a 2018 report from the United Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Department of Health (DOH), and the National Nutrition Council (NNC). The country is ranked as 9th among countries with the highest number of malnourished children.

Children suffering from malnutrition may never attain their full possible height, have weaker immune systems, and their brains may never develop to their full cognitive potential. They will face learning difficulties in school and get sick more often.  If not treated in the first 1,000 days of a person’s life, the effects of malnutrition are irreversible and will last that person’s whole life,” explained AAH Country Director, Guy Halsey.  Malnourished children become underdeveloped adults that contribute little to the economy and use up more of the country’s healthcare.  Malnourished mothers give birth to underweight children, who in turn face a higher risk of physical and cognitive impairment – perpetuating the cycle of poverty.

“Poverty, diseases and epidemics, natural disasters, and conflict are the four main causes of malnutrition in the Philippines,” enumerated  Halsey.”   To address these, AAH has projects in Nutrition and Health (NUT), Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), Food Security and Livelihood (FSL), and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). “More than half of AAH’s projects in the Philippines has a WASH element in its intervention plan because overcoming malnutrition is more than access to nutritious food; it requires the body to be able to absorb the nutrients in the food.  When children are infected by bacteria and viruses that lead to diarrhea, they often eat less food and have a reduced ability to absorb the nutrients in the food they eat,” he rationalized.

For AAH to continue their projects, they need help. And this is where their two campaigns come in. Love Food Give Food was previously known as Restaurants Against Hunger. Since 2016, its goal has been to ignite the active participation of food establishments and food lovers to stop the upward trend of extreme hunger: malnutrition. Love Food Give Food helps make food good in more ways than one.  “Unlike its previous version, Love Food Give Food is not limited to restaurants. We hope to get the support of all types of food establishments; food kiosks, bakeries, cafés, carinderias, and even home-based online food vendors,” said Fundraising and Resource Development Manager Dale Nelson Divinagracia.

Food establishments who would like to participate will choose 1 or 2 or more special items from their product list. These items are identified as “Charity Dishes”. For every purchase of these Charity Dishes from October 1 to December 1, 2019, a portion of the sale will be donated to AAH’s projects. “To be part of the movement against hunger, all they have to do is go to www.lovefoodgivefoodphilippines.org, and click the “join now” button. The campaign is very easy to implement, it doesn’t entail much cost, and it unites the business staff and customers for a cause,” guarantees Divinagracia.

Customers can do their part by patronizing the participating food establishments and purchasing the charity dishes within the Love Food Give Food campaign period. They can also spread the word and invite friends and family to support the campaign. “This year, we also made it possible for people to directly donate to Action Against Hunger.  Some food establishments will have donation boxes in their premises,” added Divinagracia.

As of writing, the establishments that have confirmed their participation are: Alba, Baker & Cook, Buffalo Wild Wings, Bulgogi Brothers, Café Mediterranean, Chef Laudico OK Café, Chelsea Kitchen, Chotto Matte, The Coconut Club, Corner Tree Café, Cyma, D' Doux Cafe & Patisserie, D'Kada Cafe & Bistro, Denny’s, Fish & Co., Friends & Family, Gallery by Chele, Green Pastures, Holy Grill, Italianni’s, Izakaya Sensu, Kabila, Kats Happy Food, Krazy Garlic, La Petite Fromagerie, The Lost Bread, Modern Shanghai, Mom & Tina’s Bakery Café Providore, Plank, Saboten, Sunkissed Café, Terraz, Texas Roadhouse, TGIFridays, and Village Tavern.

Another campaign under Love Food Give Food is the ₱100 for 5 Challenge. According to the 2015 Family Income and Expenditure Survey of the Philippine Statistics Authority, the  average family monthly income is estimated at P22,000, and 41.5% of it is spent on food.  This equates to P300 daily or P100 per meal. The challenge for homemakers is to create a nutritious and delicious meal while staying within the family budget.

“We presented this challenge to our partner chefs and they came up with healthy dishes that are within the budget of ₱100 for 5 persons,” related Divinagracia.

Our Love Food Give Food ambassadors, chefs Rolando and Jac Laudico of Chef Laudico Guevarra’s and OK Café were game from the onset. Chef Rolando created  Tinola Arroz Caldo with Malunggay Pesto while Chef Jac prepared Fish Soup with Kamote Fruit and Leaves and White Rice. Chef Chele Gonzalez and Chef Carlos Villaflor of Gallery by Chele collaborated and produced Chicken Tinola with Fideua. Chef Robby Goco of Cyma/Green Pastures/Souv, who can be credited for the ₱100 for 5 idea whipped up Kare-kare Rice with Binagoongang Tokwa.

Their recipes are available on www.lovefoodgivefoodphilippines.org with easy-to-follow videos directed and produced by Rapunzel Eliserio-Laurel. “We would like to invite more people to take on the challenge and submit their recipes to us. The submitted recipes will be shared with our beneficiaries during the health, hygiene, and sanitation promotion sessions that we conduct in all our projects,” Divinagracia appealed.

Love Food Give Food is supported by campaign ambassadors Chefs Rolando and Jacqueline Laudico, as well as Chef Chele Gonzalez, Chef Carlos Villaflor, and Chef Robby Goco. Sponsoring the campaign are McCormick Culinary, Pacific Bay by Mida Food, PL Aguila Manufacturing, and Chef Laudico Guevarra’s. We are also collaborating with Digital-Out-Of-Home (DOOH), Nyxsys, Pitchworks, and Summit Media Outdoor.  The campaign is also supported by ourawesomeplanet.com.

"I am blessed to be a part of the Maybelline New York family and join the roster of powerhouse spokeswomen, past, present and future," shares Estelle, the brand's youngest spokesmodel. "To stand with a brand that is such a trailblazer in the industry, consistently pushing the boundaries of innovation and establishing future trends, while empowering women to recognize their true potential, has left me inspired and overjoyed."

Estelle was first discovered by an agent in a Paris park when she was 13, and is currently represented by Ford Models. Her big break came when she was invited to walk in the Victoria's Secret fashion show in 2017 and returned again in 2018. She quickly captured global attention with this major milestone and was the youngest Chinese model to walk in the Victoria's Secret show in Shanghai.

She has also walked for Chanel, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Moschino, Proenza Schouler, Maison Margiela, Alberta Ferretti, Elie Saab, Jean Paul Gaultier, Fendi, Thakoon, Victoria Beckham, Opening Ceremony, Michael Kors, Boss, Chloe and many more. Estelle has landed a variety of campaigns including Vera Wang and H&M and has also been featured in the pages of Italian, Chinese and Japanese Vogue, CR Fashion Book, TMagazine China, Harper's Bazaar UK and Chinese editions.

Let the cutest and fiercest little girls tell us how it’s done

For 20 years, The Powerpuff Girls have been on a mission to prove that girls rule. Now Cartoon Network is launching #Empowerpuff in the Philippines, an initiative that hopes to make a difference in the life of every Pinay.

Through #Empowerpuff, Cartoon Network will premiere a series of on-ground activities, local partnerships as well as online content to inspire Pinays to build their very own ‘ka-pow’ legacy and transform their communities. But before it officially kicks off, you can empower other young ladies in your community with these easy steps:

Encourage them to express their creativity

Creativity is meant to be expressed because it is a gift that is ever evolving. If you know someone who has a talent in creating things or making beautiful drawings, encourage them to hone their craft!

Say no to bullying!

Whether online or offline, bullying should not be tolerated. Lift each other up by saying good things that will help them become more driven and motivated.

Always be ready to help out

Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup may have their differences and fights, but they’re always there for their sisters. Whether with a big or small gesture, support goes a long way when it comes to empowering others. Watch out for the #Empowerpuff themed shirts by Merch By, so you can empower other girls one shirt at a time!

Spark up conversations

Another way to empower one another is to encourage conversation. Let your gal-pals know that they are remembered by perking up your group chats and sending them cool #Empowerpuff-themed Viber stickers starting this September 19.

Ride on to adventure

To empower others, you need to believe in yourself too. By stepping out of your comfort zone, going on adventures and meeting other people, you gain experiences that can make an impact on others. Visit different places and take advantage of every opportunity.

Teach each other things

Sharing is caring and it doesn’t only apply to material things like your baon. Talent, skills and knowledge are also valuable things that you can share and teach others. You never know; they might be encouraged to pay it forward.

Mingle with others

Empowered women never limit themselves. They go out of their comfort zone and mingle with others with whom they share the same passion. Events like It's A Girl Thing (IAGT) are designed to empower girls and celebrate uniqueness. And, as Cartoon Network partners with IAGT on November 10, girls like you are surely going to have fun as you meet your fave women who wowed the world!

In addition to international personalities like the Merrel twins, there will also be guest appearances from local celebrity trailblazers like Anne Curtis, Yassi Pressman, Karylle, Jessy Mendiola and Megan Young.

Be empowered with #Empowerpuff! Stay tuned as Cartoon Network has a lot of surprises, cool prizes, and activities in store for you!
