How Online Learning Boosts Students’ Well-Being at Home

Due to the enhanced community quarantine in many parts of the Philippines, schools are faced with closures and cancelled activities. In a report, UNICEF cited that “almost 90 per cent or 1.5 billion of the world’s students are now affected by nationwide school closures due to the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).”

This has impacted the lives of children and teachers in such a way that their learning and teaching methods have shifted online. Families have embraced online learning to ensure that children continue their education at home and parents’ role has become central to this. But how can parents, teachers and students manage this new normal? 

1.     Create better relationships at home by having a study-play balanced lifestyle. 

Parents play a central role to a student’s education. Now more than ever, this is the best time a well for parents to maximize their bonding activities with their children by making them a learning experience as well. According to UNICEF, the school shutdown is a “chance to make better relationship with children.” UNICEF encourages parents to have one-on-one time with children and create flexible but consistent daily routines with them. This will also help children to create a balance between studying and playing at home, and not to feel stressed or pressured by the home-school situation. 

UNICEF also encourages parents to spend at least 20 minutes or longer in a day with children at home. CPFI adopts enhanced safety measures in manufacturing plants

To meet the upsurge in consumer demand while ensuring the health of its employees against COVID19, Century Pacific Food, Inc (CPFI), makers of tuna and sardines brands such as Century Tuna and 555, is implementing stringent health and hygiene measures in its manufacturing plants to protect workers who continue to work amidst the pandemic. 

“We stand by our commitment to help ensure food security during the COVID-19 crisis by keeping our plant fully operational,“ says Greg Banzon, EVP and COO of CPFI. “At the same time, we have to make the welfare of our employees a top priority to sustain operations during the Enhanced Community Quarantine period.  We have also adopted a variety of actions for the health, safety and comfort of our employees.”

Social distancing, strict hygiene measures, wearing protective personal equipment and   incentives for employees are just some of the practices strictly implemented in CPFI plants to ensure the safety of its employees and its products. 

Before employees enter the plant, they go through a strict daily screening that include temperature reading, disinfecting footbaths, and hand washing. Hand sanitizer dispensers are installed all over the plants to sustain disinfection throughout the workday.

Social distancing is also required in all key processes of production with foot markers spread across the tuna and sardine plants in General Santos and Zamboanga to help workers maintain a safe distance from each other. These markers are based on the distance prescribed by the World Health Organization. Additionally, employee-resting areas during breaks are also laid out to ensure proper social distancing.

Employees are provided with masks, hairnets and manufacturing gowns while those who interact frequently with co-workers are required to wear face shields to add extra layers of protection for workers in the production lines. 

Implementing these practices consequently adds to overall safety of CPFI canned products, where each can is processed on high heat exceeding 120 degrees Celsius and under very strict quality standards. 

CFPI also looks after the well-being of its employees by increasing employee incentives. 

Banzon says, “Our employees are the backbone of our operations and we need to keep an eye on their welfare, even more so during this global health crisis when we are doing our part in ensuring food security.”

Workers receive assistance in the form of free canned goods for their families, free meals at the plant along with vitamin supplements to boost their immunity. CPFI was also among the companies who have released the pro-rated portion of the 13^th month pay. JOINING FORCES ALLIANCE ON THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN - PHILIPPINES

A global alliance of child-focused international non-government organizations calls on the national and local governments to intensify efforts against online sexual exploitation against children (OSEC).

Taking advantage of the quarantine situation, perpetrators could easily groom children online and coerce them to send and receive sexually explicit messages, images, and videos. 

“With the indefinite suspension of classes due to COVID-19, children are spending more time on the internet, exposed to the dangers of OSEC,” said Euan Crawshaw, Philippine Country Manager of Terre des Hommes - Netherlands. 

Children and young adults may experience boredom and economic stress as they stay at home for prolonged periods of time, pushing them to engage in risky behaviors in exchange for money.

“With parents and guardians preoccupied with economic, health, and security concerns, children may end up browsing the internet unsupervised,” Cranshaw added. 

“As the lockdown bars many people from going to work, they look for various alternatives to sustain family income. Going online to sell sexually explicit materials is among the options, particularly in the Philippines where OSEC has been rampant even before the COVID-19 pandemic,” he explained.

We, the Joining Forces Alliance, support the Filipino children in their call to eliminate OSEC — as reflected in the National Children Manifesto on OSEC, which is written by the children themselves.

We also commend the relentless efforts of the government. And we will support the government in providing services to victim-survivors and in ensuring that children are safe.

Now more than ever, our joint efforts should be intensified. Hence, we are calling on the national government — through the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Inter-Agency Council Against Child Pornography; the Department of Justice’s Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking; and the Philippine National Police’s Anti-Cybercrime Group and Women and Children Protection Center — to further strengthen efforts in combating OSEC during this health crisis: 

●      Ensure that mechanisms for reporting, referral, and responding to OSEC cases are functional at all times, both at the national and local level. 

●      Raise awareness on OSEC through television, radio, and social media, where people mostly spend their time during the crisis.

●      Establish a database and monitoring system for OSEC reports related to the COVID-19 pandemic.   

We are also calling on local government units (LGUs) to increase efforts in preventing OSEC among their constituents. 

“Social protection and safety net interventions for the COVID-19 response should address heightened and complex physical and economic risks and vulnerabilities of children and low-income households,” said Selena Fortich, Plan International’s Country Program Manager for Child Protection. 

“Government interventions should focus on Filipino workers whose source of income were affected due to the temporary closure of business and work, as well as families living below the poverty line,” Fortich emphasized. “The government must ensure that such economic needs are met to prevent parents from selling sexual images of their children online.”

We, the Joining Forces Alliance, put forward these recommendations for LGUs:

●      Provide adequate financial and material assistance (i.e., cash, food, or non-food items) to families whose livelihoods are affected.

●      Ensure that prevention measures are functional at all times, such as awareness campaigns, barangay-level reporting mechanisms, and activation of Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) desks. 

●      Devise alternative reporting mechanisms that is more accessible to the public. 

●      Consider the unique needs of victims of violence, such as the need to move homes during quarantine restrictions.
