McDonald’s Philippines partners with the National Task Force against COVID-19 (NTF) to provide free COVID-19 RT-PCR testing for its store employees

Quick service restaurant giant, McDonald’s Philippines, has partnered with the National Task Force against COVID-19 (NTF) to provide free COVID-19 RT-PCR testing for its company owned and franchised store employees in NCR as part of the company’s continuous focus on health and safety under its M Safe program.

This partnership of NTF with McDonald’s reinforces the collaboration between the public and private sector for testing and isolation programs.  The community testing initiative aims to ensure a safe workplace for its employees and dining experience for its customers. McDonald’s has also recently committed to implement the StaySafe.ph app in its restaurants to improve contact tracing protocols.

McDonald’s Philippines master franchise holder, Dr. George T. Yang, opened the first McDonald’s store in Morayta, Manila in 1981. Since then, McDonald’s in the Philippines has been a strong and relevant player in the country’s quick service restaurant industry, having grown a store network of over 640 across the country. McDonald’s Philippines continues to elevate its community relevance through Ronald McDonald House Charities and McDonald’s Kindness Kitchen in response to COVID-19 pandemic.

“The safety of our employees and customers has always been at the core of our operating culture. It is because of this that we continue to explore and partner with the government and the private sector, to keep the public safe. We believe that more than ever, we have to come together to fight this pandemic to re-start the economy safely and protect the employment of more Filipinos,” said McDonald’s Philippines President and CEO, Kenneth S. Yang.

Beginning September 28 in Palacio de Maynila, one of the Mega Swabbing Facilities set up by the NTF, employees of the company have started to get tested. The company aims to test over 19,000 of its crew and managers in four identified Mega Swabbing Facilities at Mall of Asia Arena (Pasay), Philippine Arena (Sta. Maria, Bulacan), Lakeshore Bicutan (Taguig), and Palacio de Maynila (Manila).

McDonald’s will also be donating three (3) testing booths to one of its long-standing community partners, Pasig City, to support their testing initiatives.

McDonald’s employees will be properly guided and assisted by the company from scheduling, conduct of testing to the release of the results. To limit exposure of the employees and to ensure that the restaurant continues to operate smoothly, only a limited number or crew and managers are scheduled per day. Members of the restaurant management team arranges for the transportation going to the Mega Swabbing Facility, provides assistance on-site for the testing and coordinates the release of results.

Should an employee test positive, McDonald’s will remain in compliance with all the government mandated protocols and will support its employees until they are able to go back to work.

“Through this expanded testing program which we are launching today, you shall not only be ensuring the health and safety of your employees, but also their families and those they come in close contact with every day,” says Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr, Chief Implementer of the National Action Plan Against COVID-19 (NAP COVID-19).

“As we combat the virus, we are very grateful for proactive partners in the private sector such as McDonald’s. Their initiative to test their employees significantly helps strengthen the government’s testing and contact tracing program. We encourage other businesses to follow suit in helping to safely reopen the country’s economy,” says NAP COVID-19 Deputy Chief Implementer Secretary Vince Dizon.

Since the announcement of the enhanced community quarantine, McDonald’s Philippines has been reinforcing its commitment towards safety of people. Under its M Safe program, the company introduced new protocols such as dedicating a safety manager in all its stores and implementing a no-touch policy for Drive-Thru and McDelivery services to ensure employee and customer safety.

Safeguard taps the best filipino rappers to "Raprapan sa Global Handwashing Day"

Hundreds of thousands of Filipinos tuned in to the most controversial online rap battle of the year — with an exchange of hand hygiene rhymes to the tune of sick beats, Safeguard and Fred D’ Germ took over the screens and Philippine social media feed last October 15, 2020 with the Raprapan sa Global Handwashing Day.

Raprapan sa Global Handwashing Day

Aiming to shut down Fred D’ Germ, his motives, and to strengthen education on safe wash practices, Safeguard tapped the best of the best in the Filipino rap community to help them promote proper handwashing habits. Some of the biggest rap names in the country — Loonie, Ron Henley, and Shehyee were more than willing to lend their flow and bars to Safeguard. Fred D’ Germ on the other hand influenced Shanti Dope to rap for his agenda.

With stars like Gloc-9 as the judge, host Luis Manzano, and co-hosted by Rufa Mae Quinto and Mimiyuuuh, coveted by thousands of excited fans — The Raprapan sa Global Handwashing Day between Safeguard and Fred D’ Germ was livestreamed simultaneously at Gloc-9’s, Fred D’ Germs’, and Safeguard Philippines’ Facebook Pages.

Tense as it can be — the event started out with a competitive aura. Shanti from team Fred D’ Germ, started the rap battle with steaming hot lines, but Loonie, Ron, and Shehyee aren’t the best for nothing and gave back piping hot bars for Round 1. Tides were slowly turning during Round 2, and odds were seemingly in team Safeguard’s favor. The comment section during Round 3 was wild. Everyone was on their feet, hands were being thrown in the air, and breathes were being held. Team Safeguard was fast in their delivery, though they made it clear that fighting germs shouldn’t be rushed. When both teams were done with Round 4, majority of the comments were rooting for team Safeguard.

Bursting with excitement, Gloc-9 announced Safeguard as the winner of The Rap-rapan sa Global Handwashing Day. Gloc-9 praised team Safeguard in their ability to express the importance of practicing Safe Wash hand hygiene, “Hindi dapat mabilisan lang, wisik, punas lang, may tamang paraan. Doon talaga nagkatalo — sa paggamit ng Safeguard. Kaya walang binatbat si Fred D’ Germ.” Even Shanti Dope admitted that the Safeguard team made good points and he has changed his mind to practice Safe Wash.

Talk of the Town, Rap Battle of the Year

With much anticipation, Filipinos — rappers, frontliners, parents, and even their kids — tuned in to watch the rap battle of the year on handwashing. Netizens shared various reactions on the exchange of lines between Safeguard and Fred D’ Germ, dominating local trends during the Raprapan sa Global Handwashing Day. Inspired by the creative delivery of a timely message, Filipino netizens also wrote their own rap lines and posted videos, spreading the word on safe wash handwashing. Days after the event, the #SafeWash Movement has piqued the interest of Filipinos. Many were proudly posting photos and videos of them practicing proper hand hygiene, calling the attention of their friends and loved ones to do the same as well. Even celebs and influencers have shared their reactions online, encouraging Filipinos to follow Safeguard’s call to join the Safe Wash Movement.

Fred D’ Germ seemed unstoppable, until Safeguard came into the picture. After releasing his rap track “Hugas Na Rin ‘Yan!” — concerned Safeguard rebutted with their own music video. Check it out and see how the Fred D’ Germ and Safeguard feud started.

Make Every Wash #SafeWash

To effectively get rid of illness causing bacteria, Safeguard advises the Filipino public to follow these simple tips when washing their hands. Wet your hands using clean water. Lather the front and back of both hands, between fingers, and under your fingernails with Safeguard liquid soap for at least 20 seconds. More germs are removed the longer you scrub. Once done scrubbing, rinse hands under clean, running water. Dry hands completely with a clean towel.

Safeguard believes that with every Filipino passing on the vision of proper hand hygiene education, Safe Wash can become the only way we know how to wash our hands. With high hopes, Safeguard continues with its mission in putting an end to “Pwede Na” handwashing habits, to ensure that every Filipino family is safe against 99.99% of germs causing bacteria through every handwash.

Cash Agad is the solution provided by BDO Unibank to unbanked and financially underserved communities

This is good news to all OFWs because your family can now have access to their remittance via BDO Unibank's Cash Agad.

The pandemic had severe effects on families and communities in the country not only because of the fear over COVID-19 but also because of how it disrupted their livelihoods. Many businesses shut down, causing widespread loss of jobs. For those who still had some income left, they could not so easily access their cash at banks and ATMs because public transportation was shutdown during the lockdown and quarantine periods.

Still, some residents were fortunate that there were Cash Agad partner agents in their communities who were ready to provide banking services even amid the pandemic.  While Cash Agad partner agents were also affected by the restrictions of the community quarantine, they were still able to help their respective barangays and are now bouncing back and continuing with their recovery in order to further build their businesses.

Did you know that you can withdraw as high as P10K at any Cash Agad partner agents here in the Philippines?

The Cash Agad partner agents network is comprised of small to medium business owners in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao who are operating the Cash Agad service in their communities. This service aims to provide ready access to cash for distant communities, especially those who are not so easily reached by public transportation. These would include communities in places that were located in challenging terrain like mountains, hilly areas, or those in far flung islands only reachable by boat.

Cash Agad is  the solution provided by BDO Unibank to unbanked and financially underserved communities, especially those places where setting up a building or bank branch or even an ATM machine would prove to be impractical and unfeasible.

Community shops-turned-ATMs

A community shop owner (the business might also be a salon, drugstore, hardware store, etc.) is usually tapped to be Cash Agad partner agent. Since such a business owner has long been part of the locality, has an establishment close to the residents, and is a trusted  figure in the community, it’s much easier for the people to trust him or her with their money-related transactions.

Once the shop owner becomes a Cash Agad partner, he or she is  given a POS terminal that is capable of accepting transactions using any Philippine-issued ATM card whether debit or credit.  And even though BDO Unibank is the one that runs the Cash Agad service, the POS terminal accepts ATM cards from all banks in the Philippines.

Cash Agad and LGUs

Another advantage of using Cash Agad is that it does not depend on banking hours. As long as the Cash Agad partner shop is open, it can accept transaction. This was modified, however, when the pandemic struck and community quarantines were imposed.  Local official had to set schedules and limit operating hours for Cash Agad transactions in order to follow physical distancing requirements designed to keep customers safe and prevent disease transmission.

Even LGUs depend on Cash Agad to deliver government’s financial aid to those in need.  For example, the beneficiaries of 4Ps withdraw their monthly cash assistance  from Cash Agad.  Even the IPs or memberes of the indigenous people’s communities are able to get their financial aid through Cash Agad. All these are possible thanks to the cooperation between LGUs and Cash Agad partner agents.

LGU employees, policemen, and teachers in the community likewise depend on Cash Agad for their salary withdrawals. Private employees, families of overseas Filipinos, all of them now access salaries and remittances from Cash Agad, too.

All of these were a great relief to residents who, for several months during community quarantine, were unable to travel due to lockdowns and checkpoints. Their mobility had been restricted within their own or the nearby barangays. They could no longer go to urban areas to transact with banks or go to ATMs.

Helping local businesses

According to Lorna Taruc, owner of Jan Pau convenience store and Cash Agad partner agent at San Simon, Pampanga, the Cash Agad service is a big help to their community.

"It’s so much more convenient and easier for people here to go to my store and withdraw their cash. They no longer need to travel so far. Especially during the lockdown when it was so difficult to find public transportation.  Apart from this, I had more customers buying from my store.”

Meanwhile, another Cash Agad partner agent, Roselyn Abela of Pitogo, Bohol, said that many residents were afraid to leave their town during the  community quarantine because they heard news that there were many COVID-19 cases in the city where they usually go to transact with banks and use ATMs.

This city is quite far from Pitogo. A person traveling there would need to ride a habal-habal (passenger motorcycle) then cross the sea by boat to another island. At the island, he or she would have to ride another habal-habal to reach the city. It takes half a day to an entire day to travel there and back again to Pitogo.  A two-way trip costs 500 pesos.

"When the community quarantine was imposed, people were thankful that I have Cash Agad at my store. They withdraw their cash here and then afterwards, they buy some of the essentials they need at home. That’s why my sales at the store also increased,”, said Roselyn.

Financial Inclusion

According to Jim Nasol, Head of Agency Banking (Cash Agad) of BDO, the bank has been planning to have Cash Agad partner agents in secluded areas for a long time. This is because they want to help rural areas across the country to be more progressive.

“Many Filipinos are smart and hardworking; they dream of better livelihoods. But they are being held back because of their lack of access to cash and capital. There are a lot of Filipinos who don’t have  enough money because just withdrawing it already takes a lot of time and a huge expense.”

“Our Cash Agad partner agents are the key to broadening financial systems. We see that in places like Pitogo, financial inclusion can go a long way in making lives easier for Filipinos in secluded communities,” he explained.

In addition, Arnold Katipunan, Head of Sales of Cash Agad in BDO, said that financial inclusion and access to money is very important during this time of the pandemic, when a lot of people and businesses need to rise up from the dampening effects of the crisis. Ultimately, their recovery will bring new life to the national economy.

The number of Cash Agad partner agents in the country continue to increase. For more information about Cash Agad, go to the BDO website

PLDT Home’s new ad shows how families learn and rediscover what matters

Parents know this: we thought we knew what it meant to be academically responsible for our school-age children. This involves regularly coordinating with children’s teachers in school, providing financial support for their academic requirements, and making sure they participate in extra-curricular activities. This was a system a lot of parents have become attuned to until the COVID-19 pandemic happened.

Since the imposed community quarantine, life at home drastically changed. With the opening of a new school year, parents grapple for ideas on how to systemically operate their households while their children stay at home. As schools send out engaging virtual assignments to students, parents scramble on figuring out how to balance their household chores along with learning how to manage their children’s home-school education. And all these activities entailed embracing a new perspective on active parenting.

To watch PLDT Home’s latest video, visit this link. Know more about PLDT Home at www.pldthome.com

While parenting could feel like a thankless job, we get immeasurable fulfillment when we see our children accomplish their dreams in life. But do we really know our children’s true aspirations?

The new normal is a pivotal moment for children at home. How parents respond to the changes in their household will greatly affect their children’s lives forever. The prolonged home quarantine allowed parents and children to bond together, get to know more about each other, be involved in one another’s activities, and rediscover their relationship as they spend more time at home.

PLDT Home’s latest ad proves that children’s dreams are developed and built at home. In the video, we’ll see a mom preparing snacks for her child who’s home-schooling. Upon approaching her daughter’s room, the mom overheard the kid discussing her aspirations to her teacher through an online class set-up. And the camera pans towards the different household chores and responsibilities that the daughter observed from her parents. In the end, the child reveals her real ambition in life – to be like her parents & to love just like how her parents love her at home.

As we navigate this new way of life, we learn how to live under new patterns, build new habits, and create new happy memories with our loved ones. Gone were the “programmed” parenting of the past as we welcome a new “connected” relationship. In this new normal, we rediscover what really matters – our family and home.
