Three simple yet very effective ways to destress and unwind even when working from home

The usual everyday office life is long gone as almost all jobs have shifted to a work-from-home arrangement. Although it has its benefits, this new working landscape brings about a few downsides, which can be stressful and can negatively affect overall health.

Between having to adjust to the new demands of working online or feeling lonely by being physically away from co-workers, it’s crucial to destress and unwind even when working from home.

Here are three simple yet very effective ways to do just that.

Start the day with a work-free morning

While the need for commuting to work became unnecessary, it’s better to ease into the workday by getting up maybe 30 minutes to an hour before work, allowing time for a morning routine. This way, there is no rush to log in and a clear mind has already been set.

Whether the routine will include cooking breakfast and enjoying a cup of coffee or doing a quick work out, enjoy a work-free morning routine with cool and hygienic air from Samsung Digital Appliances’ first-ever Window-Type Inverter Air Conditioner.  Keep the air conditioner until the rest of the day as this is very energy efficient, consuming 61% less energy than non-inverter air conditioners.

Set a time to call it a day

One of the easiest habits to form when working from home is continuing to work past normal hours and through the rest of the night, making room for more work, thus more stress. Setting a cut-off time and sticking to it will solidify the boundary between work and relaxation.

When all the tasks for the day have been completed, it may be time to shut the laptop down and call it a day.

Invest the time, not only to fill the workday with important work priorities, but also to unwind when needed. With the air conditioner’s Fast Cooling feature, cooling down right after a workday is possible as it cools 15% faster than non-inverter air conditioners.

Slow down and meditate

After stressful workdays at home, lingering stress and frustration is inevitable, negatively affecting one’s mental health. To get rid of this, it’s essential to take a breather as soon as work is done for the day.

Allotting even five minutes after work to follow a guided meditation or just sitting quietly to relax will be good for the mind. When taking this time to slow down after meetings and tasks, it’s also important to be in a cool, safe, and clean environment.

Samsung’s Window-Type Inverter Air Conditioner is also equipped with a 3-in-1 Anti-Bacterial Filter that consist of Silver Ion, Vitamin C, and Anti-Mite that are proven effective in destroying bacteria, allergens, and other airborne contaminants.

A work-from-home day can be efficient and rewarding, as long as taking the time to do other things, such as resting or pursuing a hobby, is also a priority.

Pacific Cross: The Medical Protection You Deserve

Pacific Cross Philippines (PCPH) proves their commitment to serving clients by providing reliable assistance amidst the COVID-19 crisis. PCPH has been providing coverage for COVID-19 since March 2020, superseding their standard exclusion on pandemics for their medical plans.

Patients can incur large expenses for getting hospitalized when availability of a treatment for a disease is uncertain. Epidemics and pandemics are normally excluded from medical insurance coverage for this reason.

According to the Department of Health, over 500,000 cases of COVID-19 infections have been recorded in the Philippines. Getting hospitalized for the disease can amount to millions of pesos—money most Filipinos do not have. PCPH understands having medical insurance to cover for such a hefty cost is invaluable.

“We have always thought of Pacific Cross as an instrument in aiding our clients especially in these trying times. We want to be a reliable and trusted ally for our customers. We will continue to be here for our clients by providing support to them when and where we can,” said Pacific Cross President and CEO Mr. Daniel Daly on why they decided to provide coverage for COVID-19.

As of January 2021, Pacific Cross Philippines has assisted over 400 clients affected by COVID-19 and has paid over PHP 57 million in medical claims.

In September 2020, PCPH earned a rating of PRS A for financial strength from the Philippine Rating Services Corporation. The rating means that PCPH is financially strong and able to fulfill all their financial obligations while maintaining steady cash flow. They continue to be #HereForYou even in the midst of this pandemic and for years to come.

The Medical Protection You Deserve

With over 70 years of solid experience in the insurance industry, PCPH has taken their expertise to fine tune products and provide value-packed medical insurance plans such as their Select Plans. These plans let clients enjoy no-cash-outlay for in-patient and emergency out-patient medical treatment using Pacific Cross’s accredited network. Clients can also opt to file their eligible claims for reimbursement with Pacific Cross.

PCPH’s Select Plans are sought after for its basic hospital benefits, critical care benefits, surgical benefits, coverage of auto-immune conditions, annual physical examination, and value added benefits such as sports coverage for recreational sports like scuba diving and free child coverage for any number of children born by a female client during her period of insurance with Pacific Cross.

PCPH’s highest benefits paid in 2019 were for surgeon’s fee, diagnostic laboratory tests and operating room fee – a glimpse of benefits PCPH’s Select Plans offer and are proven valuable to its policyholders which further show that Select Plans can and will be #HereForYou through any medical journey.

Providing Support to MSMEs and Freelancers

The Department of Trade and Industry has reported a 41% increase in business registrations in 2020. Because a healthy team keeps operations running smoothly, it is necessary for businesses, regardless of size, to provide medical protection to their workforce.

PCPH makes this possible for micro, small, and medium-sized businesses with their BC Flexi Access Plans. On top of in-patient and out-patient benefits, the plans also provide emergency benefits, worldwide emergency assistance services, and levels of coverage for pre-existing conditions, including congenital conditions (depending on the plan). BC Flexi Access also provides convenience in seeking medical treatment with its no cash-outlay availment for covered benefits using Pacific Cross’s accredited network. These plans cover COVID-19 as with their other medical insurance plans.

PCPH also helps individuals earn high commission rates, undergo sales trainings and receive incentives by selling Pacific Cross Medical Plans. They currently have over 700 Direct Tied Agents, Licensed Independent Agents and Financial Planners.

Pacific Cross is a leading medical and travel insurance provider in the Philippines. As Pacific Cross is here to find ways to best serve clients during times of need, they are superseding their standard exclusion on pandemics for Medical Plans and will provide coverage for COVID-19. DOT lauds Bohol's efforts in setting up this year's annual Ubi Festival

The Department of Tourism (DOT) lauds the Provincial Government of Bohol's efforts in setting up this year's annual Ubi Festival under the new normal.

Running until February 24, the festival, which has been celebrated since year 2000, is proof of the Boholanos’ love for Ubi or purple yam. The root crop was revered as a “savior crop” as its discovery led to the alleviation of hunger in the province during pre-Hispanic times. Now, it has become a staple food for Boholanos because of its taste, long shelf-life, and the many food varieties that can be made from it.

As the largest producer of ubi in the country, Bohol is home to many ubi farmers who turn to the root crop for their livelihood. With this year's theme, “Pagpananum ug Ubi Napuslan, Kagutom Na Dala Sa Covid19 Nabatukan,” the festival aims to celebrate the root crop that has become an agro-historical-geographical-religious symbol for the province and highlight the impact and contributions of ubi farmers.

As part of the festival, a showcase of a variety of Ubi products like ube jams and ube-based bibingka, ice cream, and bread can be found at the Old City Airport in Tagbilaran City. The venue strictly implements health and safety protocols to assure festival-goers of an easy and memorable experience. Other cultural activities, exhibits, and seminars are also held to honor the root crop this month.

From festivals, gorgeous sights, and fun-filled activities, there’s definitely a Bohol destination for everyone. While it is famous for the Chocolate Hills, Bohol also offers other attractions that families, groups, and even solo travelers can enjoy.

When one speaks of Bohol, the Chocolate Hills cannot be left out. These 1,776 individual hills spread across six towns have attracted tourists from many generations for their uniqueness and vastness. The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary, a place dedicated to saving the lives of endangered tarsiers, is also open for those who want to learn more about these small nocturnal primates.

Action-packed activities

Bohol also has something for adrenaline junkies. If you prefer seeing the Chocolate Hills up close, ATV rentals are available in the Carmen area. Those who want more action-packed activities can head to the Loboc Ecotourism Adventure Park for zipline and cable car rides. If you prefer water activities, you can also opt for stand-up paddle boarding tours or experience a water bike adventure.

White-sand beaches

Bohol is also known for its white-sand beaches and clear waters. The Alona beach is a stunning 1.5km stretch of white-sand beach famous for being a must-visit spot for those who love snorkeling, scuba diving, or even those who just like to relax and watch the sunset. Travelers can also island-hop to Balicasag and Virgin islands to explore Bohol’s marine life. If you’re lucky, you might even get a glimpse of dolphins in the area.

Variety of accommodations

Tourism comprises 70% of the livelihood in Bohol, so there is no wonder that several hotels and resorts are available in the area. Whether you choose accommodations in the municipality of Panglao or Dauis, these hotels are committed to providing top-notch service and hospitality, especially during these times. Temperature checks, QR code scanning, plated meals, and rearranged eating areas are just some of the adjustments made by accommodations to ensure that travelers are assured of a safe environment during their stay.

Hassle-free travel

Do-it-yourself travels are currently not allowed in Bohol. This means that everything you plan to do while on the island should be pre-booked--from accommodations and transportation to tour arrangements. This makes sightseeing around the island hassle-free. This also makes it easier for the provincial government to implement systems to curb the virus’s spread while ensuring that tourists get to fully enjoy the island’s beauty.

Before planning a visit to Bohol, travelers must have a negative RT-PCR test taken 72 hours before their arrival, pre-booked accommodations at a DOT/LGU-accredited establishment, travel itinerary, and registration in the Province of Bohol website at tourism.bohol.gov.ph for the issuance of personal QR codes that will serve as electronic IDs.

Tourists coming from Metro Manila are encouraged to apply for the subsidized RT-PCR test at the UP-Philippine General or Philippine Children's Medical Center for as low as PHP900 and PHP750, respectively. To avail of the 50% discount from either of the two medical institutions, visit the Tourism Promotions Board website at www.tpb.gov.ph/rtpcrphtravel.

As of February 2, 2021, Bohol allows the use of saliva RT-PCR tests in place of nasal and throat swabs.

Kuryente.org urges energy suppliers to show consumers some love by bringing the cost of electricity down

As people work remotely during the pandemic, electric usage shot up. It turns out that staying home comes at a cost. Everyone is panicking as electric bills doubled up for a month charge alone.  The question is how can everyone pay up for their electric bills when people lost their jobs or simply chose to be unemployed because of the pandemic.

As to our household, we signed a promissory note and pay staggered basis until last month (January, 2021).  But how about those who do not have the means to pay? Is there any other option or action to consider from our government?

Expensive electricity cost, illegal charges, vulnerability to disasters, lack of infrastructure for energy choices, and slow economic recovery from the pandemic cited as reasons for consumer involvement.

A consumer organization during its launch today (Feb. 17) expressed alarm over what it perceives as an energy crisis in the country, aggravated by the lack of consumer empathy and participation in the energy industry.

“The Philippines remains to charge one of the highest electricity costs in Asia. This and the continued poor services especially during the current pandemic are affecting the ordinary Filipino’s capacity to cope. Many are also losing their jobs,” said Nic Satur, National Coordinator for Kuryente.Org“We in Kuryente.Org thus believe that transparency and accessibility in the energy industry will help consumers be educated about a more transparent and socially inclusive energy program.

In attending the virtual launch, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, chair of the Senate Committee on Energy, underscored how important it is for consumers to be educated and involved in issues that affect the lives of the majority of Filipinos. He said that consumer protection is ensured and competitive operation of the electricity industry is enhanced through the Senate Bill No. 173 or the “Energy Advocate Act”. Gatchalian has authored several laws on consumer protection and energy, among them are the Electric Cooperatives Emergency and Resiliency Fund Act, the Energy Virtual One Stop Shop Act, the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act, the Rice Trade Liberalization Act, and the Mobile Number Portability Act.

“The rationale for the Energy Advocate Act is to give organizations a bigger voice in terms of rates setting and going into the approval of retail rates here in our country,” he said. “The Energy Advocate Act created the Energy Advocate Office under the Department of Justice. Thus, it becomes the lawyer of consumer groups and the representative of all end-users in energy sector matters.”

page2image30749696

Senator Gatchalian also mentioned that even though almost everyone in this planet consumes and pays for electricity, more often than not, they do not know how the payment and computation for this is being derived. This, according to him, is where consumer advocacy groups such as Kuryente.Org must come together to make noise and study the complexity of the energy industry to protect the rights of the consumers.

Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) Legal Service Director Atty. Maria Corazon Gines also shared the functions and compositions of ERC, as well as its adopted COVID-19 response measures to better serve and help the energy consumers during these trying times.

“The protection of public interest as it is affected by the rates and services of electric utilities and other providers of electric power is paramount in the discharge of ERC’s functions. We will always keep the consumers in mind when we evaluate and decide on all our applications,” Atty. Gines said.

On the hand, Mr. Josell Co, Assistant Manager for Knowledge Management Services of the Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines, explained the essence of the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market as it is where industries trade electricity and where distributors conduct power supply agreements with generation companies for their electricity requirements and agreed rates.

Electricity is a very unique commodity in a sense that it has to be generated when it is needed. Unlike other commodities like meat and sugar that we could actually store and consume when we need it, electricity is needed 24/7 but cannot be economically stored in very large quantities,” he explained. “Here in IEMOP, we aim to make electricity needs as competitive and as beneficial as possible to be able to serve the consumers better.”

It has been almost a year since the lockdown was imposed in the country due to the rising cases of COVID-19. Rappler reported that the Philippines is at its worst economic slump since World War II, with its gross domestic product falling by 9.5 percent in 2020. Amid the economic strain, consumers are also burdened by exorbitant fees imposed by energy suppliers.

A research study made by Kuryente.Org, entitled, ‘Electrifying a Nation: The Philippine Energy Sector in Focus’, reveals an overbilling through the averaging scheme was committed against consumers during the peak of the community quarantine. The said averaging computation was based on higher generation rates and not the lower rates during the lockdown period.

page3image30630432

“Duha ra akong suga, naa koy radyo pero akong bill kay 6,000 ka libo nga pesos, nakahilak
ko pagkakita sa akong bill, dili ko kasabot nganong mga negosyante sam asa nga oportunista sa ilahang kustomer sama nako.
” (I only have two lights and one transistor radio, but I still ended up paying PhP6,000! I cried after seeing my bill. I don’t understand how power businesses are taking advantage of poor customers, like me,” laments Gretchen Villahermosa, a farmer from Cebu. Although Villahermosa’s bill was eventually ruled as a “mistake” by her power utility company, it did not take away the suspicion that similar mistakes are being unnoticed by unwary consumers.

The business community is also seeking better service, lower prices, and more options. Small and medium-scale enterprises decry the lack of long-term solutions to combat the economic strain brought by the prolonged community quarantine.

“Businesses are losing a lot to the pandemic and we need long-term solutions to the problems we are facing. The government should help us access infrastructure that will allow us to choose where to get our electricity from. We hope that our voices will be heard and represented in decision-making processes in the energy industry, since these policies affect us directly,” says entrepreneur Mark Dennis Uyaco.

These consumer stories are the very reason why Kuryente.Org has been established – to ensure that the government, the energy industry, and the consumers are in an open conversation to future-proof the economy.

“Our study shows that, historically, only a few rich families are controlling the energy industry, and we would like to change that by strengthening consumer empowerment and representation. We want to reclaim the power back to the Filipino consumers,” says Satur.

As a consumer welfare organization, Kuryente.Org is calling on the government to:

  1. Allow substantial consumer representation in the ERC as an ex-officio observer in the commission en banc;

  2. Develop a comprehensive roadmap for migration from coal to cleaner, more efficient, and much cheaper renewable energy sources;

  3. Have a public review and accounting of universal charges, system loss, FIT All charge, and other subsidies as pass-on charges to consumers; and

  4. Implement an immediate lifting of the TRO on RCOA and gradual lowering of the threshold.

Ginebra San Miguel “Bagong Hamon, Bagong Tapang,” highlights the values that Filipinos need to have as a nation in facing the challenges of the new normal

Some of my friends lost their jobs during the pandemic, while some are working remotely from home.  There are those slowly picking up the pieces by venturing to online selling. Arm with courage, we should not lose hope, for an opportunity is always there for each and everyone of us.

While the coming new year brings us a fresh start, it also pushes us to face a new reality, a new normal. In this new normal, life is not the way it used to be.

With the new normal comes a new start, a new hope, and a new future that is in our hands to shape. The pandemic may have exposed our weaknesses, but it has also built new courage and strength. It is a courage that says, “I will start again even if it means beginning at a lower state”. It is a courage that operates on humility and certainty to fight despite external factors. Indeed, to succeed in this battle we have to overcome uncertainty with a different kind of strength and resilience, and a new kind of courage.

“Bagong Hamon, Bagong Tapang,” Ginebra San Miguel’s latest campaign hopes to inspire and to motivate with a new ad that highlights the values that Filipinos need to have as a nation in facing the challenges of the new normal – “ganado,” “matapang,” “lumalaban,” and “nagkakaisa.” The narrative is inspired by real-life situations that Filipinos went through in the pandemic, rising to the challenge of starting anew to survive, to be able to provide for their family and to serve others.

The new advertising campaign was launched on January 1, 2021 on online and digital platforms.

“Filipinos have always been strong and resilient as a people but the new challenges we face today unleashed a new kind of strength and resilience we never thought we had. Today, we are ready to move on and ready to take new opportunities. We have a chance to reinvent and to create a better world where we can all work, succeed, and celebrate in the new normal. First-ever Digital PR Congress Opens with Reality Check on PR, Business and Media Landscapes

The 27th National Public Relations Congress kicks off its three-day run today with plenaries looking into the new realities for Philippine PR and the business and media sectors. Presented by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP), the country’s premier organization for public relations and communication practitioners, this year’s conference is the first time the National PR Congress is being held online in its 27 years and the first time it will run for three days instead of the usual two.

From February 17 to 19, 2021, PR and communication practitioners from all over the nation – and the world -- will come together to examine the current PR landscape and find ways to move forward as one industry. Local and international experts from different fields will share their insights with more than 1,400 registrants for the three-day conference.

The first day, which sets the context and tone for the congress, will tackle the shifts in the PR industry as it is impacted and bounces back from the challenges of the past year, foremost of them being the pandemic. The sessions will look into the state of PR in the country and outside, the role of PR in the new dynamic, Filipinos’ post-pandemic profile, changes in the business terrain and how companies are adjusting, and the challenges for the media and PR in the perspective of the Philippine media.

With the theme “Transcend,” the annual event aims to inspire PR and communication practitioners to break through traditional boundaries, rise above themselves and focus on the bigger issues the nation is facing. The congress hinges on the PRSP’s theme of “PR for Good” to put a spotlight on serving the community better and making a lasting impact through PR.

Each day of the congress is designed to highlight a specific topic of focus. On the first day, participants will deep dive into the state of Philippine PR. The second day will focus on the power of technology and how it is reshaping the practice of PR and communication. Finally, the third day will encourage conversations on critical issues that are shaping business and communication narratives today.

Opening the discussion on the state of Philippine PR is Managing Director of Grupo Agatep and PRSP President Norman Agatep, APR, followed by May Lwin, chair and professor at Wee Kim Wee School of Communication & Information and director of the University Scholars Programme at the Nanyang Technological University Singapore, who will talk about the state of PR in Asia. Nitin Mantri, group CEO of Avian WE and president of the International Communications Consultancy Organisation (ICCO), will then provide an overview of world PR.

Ron Jabal, APR, CEO of PageOne Group, will shed some light on the role PR plays in the new dynamic, followed by John Januszczak, president and CEO of UBX, the fintech venture studio created by UnionBank of the Philippines, who will talk about how the pandemic has changed the consumer behavior of Filipinos. Tommaso Di Giovanni, VP for global communications of Philip Morris International and recognized by PRovoke Media as one of the 20 Global Rising Stars in PR and Communications for 2020, will share about business agility, grit and community commitment.

A panel of veteran journalists will close the first day of the congress, providing insights on ensuring accurate and truthful communication. Joining the conversation are Philippine Daily Inquirer columnist John Nery, Board of Trustees of the Center for Media Freedom & Responsibility member Vergel Santos and TV5 journalist Ed Lingao.

“It is important that as we forge ahead and adjust to the new normal, we do not lose sight of what PR is all about. This is what we want to remind practitioners through this Congress: that we also serve the community even as we work with brands and organizations in sharing their messages to the public,” said Agatep.

The congress gathers together participants from industry organizations, SMEs and large corporations, government agencies, NGOs, LGUs and the academe all over the Philippines.

Congress Chair Ana Pista shared, “With Transcend as our theme for this Congress, we hope to enjoin PR and communication practitioners and all delegates to rethink our role and responsibility and in our work contribute to the solution instead of the problem. This Congress theme is about moving forward to create a better normal for all.”
