Unilever partners with Shopee for the "Linis Pilipinas" campaign

Working toward a cleaner future does not happen overnight. It is a joint, continuous effort, involving partners and communities, meaningful initiatives, and everyone’s individual steps. Added up, all these actions create an enormous impact. Unilever, the makers of well-loved brands like Breeze, Domex, and Surf, has partnered with Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in the region, and the Haribon Foundation to drive actions towards a better, cleaner future through Unilever’s “Linis Pilipinas” campaign, where millions of Filipinos across the nation can take action for a clean future.

Armed with the purpose of providing convenient access to sustainable Home Care products, Unilever kicks off Linis Pilipinas, Unilever Home Care's Super Brand Day Sale this June 10-12 on ShopeeThe Linis Pilipinas initiative brings to life Unilever’s global Clean Future strategy announced in 2020, with a bold goal of transforming Unilever’s Home Care brands and products to become better for people and the planet, all powered by purpose and innovation.

Redefining Sustainable Packaging

During the Super Brand Day Sale, shoppers can get exclusive vouchers of up to 15% off and free shipping on their favorite Unilever products, making sustainable options more accessible and affordable. At the same time, they can also enjoy the satisfaction of knowing they are supporting advocacies and initiatives geared toward creating a lower environmental footprint. Surf, Breeze, and Domex bottles are now made with 100% recycled plastic, taking away as much as 9 million plastic bottlesfrom landfills or waterways. Steps toward improving and optimizing packaging have also been taken to prevent the use of excessive plastic, with education on collecting plastics and flexible packaging simultaneously being rolled out through over 400 barangay partnerships and social media content. This is not just an opportunity for Unilever, but for Filipinos, to make that shift in behavior and to take that step in a better direction.

Committing to a Sustainable Future

The efforts for achieving sustainability and giving back to the community continue, even after every purchase. A portion of the proceeds during the Super Brand Day Sale will go to Haribon Foundation, furthering Unilever’s starting point of planting 1,250 trees. With this, Linis Pilipinas shoppers can help reduce carbon, promote cleaner living, and help regenerate natural habitats. The Linis Pilipinas microsite on Shopee will feature a real-time live counter showing just how many trees will be planted through each and every shopper’s act of purchase, marking their contribution to reforestation.

“Finding partners that advocate for genuine and science-based forest restoration has been a challenge in this pandemic. With our partnership with Unilever, we are able to continue our efforts in restoring our country's depleting forests as we both believe that the communities themselves are the best stewards of our forests. Together, we hope to empower and transform communities, who through the forest restoration campaign, will be provided livelihood and capacity development on basic ecology, rainforestation technology, and forest monitoring,” shares Maria Belinda de la Paz, COO, Haribon Foundation.

Forming Sustainable Habits

Unilever understands that achieving sustainability and a cleaner future isn’t just one act done today, then easily forgotten tomorrow. “Linis Pilipinas” aims to empower Filipinos to form a habit of caring for the environment and the future. Educational efforts include a micro-site on Shopee dedicated to spreading awareness, trivia, and information on environmentally friendly practices. Purchasing Unilever products during the Super Brand Day Sale can also come with free eco-friendly items that help shoppers be a step closer to achieving these goals, such as upcycled sponges, tote bags, bamboo toothbrushes, and silicone bowls. These reusable, rewashable, and upcycled items, combined with the digital educational efforts, will go a long way toward forming greener and cleaner daily habits at home.

“We know that everyone working together towards a clean future is the way forward in addressing the environmental and social challenges facing us right now. As Filipinos, we can start with our home, our communities, and more importantly with our individual actions and choices. Unilever acts as a partner in connecting groups like Shopee and Haribon Foundation to the people that share vision of a better, cleaner, greener world. With Linis Pilipinas, we continue the mission of making sustainable living commonplace for all Filipinos,” shares Vanessa Ong, Unilever Philippines Marketing Director for Homecare.

"Shopee is pleased to collaborate with a purpose-driven company such as Unilever, to help achieve their sustainability goals and give back to our communities. With a deep understanding of consumer behaviour and trends in each market, Shopee will work with Unilever to develop localised initiatives that will help to raise awareness and encourage our shoppers to do their part in creating a cleaner and greener community for everyone. We look forward to driving more of such meaningful initiatives with our brand partners in the future,” said Martin Yu, Director at Shopee Philippines.

Responsible Business 2021 serves as a platform for providing business-critical, actionable insights

Responsible Business 2021, a virtual event organized by Reuters Events, served as a platform for providing business-critical, actionable insights. Speakers from Governments, International Organizations and Businesses shared their views about the international agreements, commitments and measures towards the global sustainability transition.

How to achieve alignment around a clear purpose and strategy, creating a new structure and a new model to assess new opportunities? With sustainability becoming the business itself and not a separate agenda, business opportunities are arising from green new deals that are intended to drive economic growth while simultaneously addressing climate change issues. Industries like ICT have been at the forefront, providing enabling technology for a greener world. ICT-enabled power savings and carbon emission reductions will far exceed the industry's own, helping greatly conserve energy and reduce emissions worldwide.

“Carbon neutrality, circular economy, energy efficiency or waste management are at the heart of this much needed sustainability transition”, said Catherine Chen, Huawei Corporate Senior Vice President and Director of the Board. In her keynote, she emphasized the importance of reducing carbon emissions and fostering the use of renewable energy, and highlighted Huawei Smart PV solution which is being widely used in more than 60 countries. “All in all, when deployed in large ground-based power plants, Huawei smart PV solutions can help cut power generation costs by 7%. When used in enterprise campuses and households, they can increase power yields by 2% and reduce power consumption costs”, she stated.

Catherine Chen, Huawei Corporate Senior Vice President and Director of the Board delivering a keynote at the Responsible Business 2021

As a responsible corporate citizen, Huawei is committed to minimizing its environmental impact in production, operations, and throughout the lifecycles of its products and services. The main objective is to cut carbon emissions, promote renewable energy, and contribute to more regenerative economic systems. In 2020, Huawei worked with 93 of its top 100 suppliers to set a carbon emission reduction target. The PV power plants on Huawei campuses generated 12.6 million kWh of electricity. 1.55 billion kWh of clean energy was used, reducing carbon emissions by more than 620,000 tons. The device recycling program was expanded to cover 48 countries and regions, and recycled more than 4,500 tons of electronic waste. Huawei was among the top 5% of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) ‘A List’ companies, out of the 9,000 companies scored by CDP on their climate change disclosures in 2020.

The event featured well renowned leaders and high level government officials including: HRH The Prince of Wales, Carlos Alvarado Quesada, President of Costa Rica, Nadia Calviño, Vice President and Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Spain, Virginijus Sinkevičius, Commissioner Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, European Commission, Sanda Ojiambo, Executive Director, UN Global Compact, Pierre Gramegna, Minister of Finance, Luxemburg, Tina Bru, Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Norway, Jochen Flasbarth, State Secretary at Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, Germany, Thomas Dermine, State Secretary for Economic Recovery and Strategic Investments, Ministry of the Economy and Employment Belgium, and Hilde Hardeman, Head - Service for Foreign Policy Instruments (FPI), European Commission, etc.

“Responsible Business 2021 clearly articulated the pressing demand for businesses to re-think parts, if not all, of their business. The event also provided a great platform for new definitive actions, new ways of collaborating and open innovation among all stakeholders. Companies like Huawei can play a vital role in ensuring the just transition and can serve as a role model for companies to transform their businesses.”, said Liam Dowd, Managing Director, Reuters Events Sustainable Business.

Bettinna shared her ten-year-long single-motherhood journey during the Eden Speaks Mother’s Day Forum

They say life truly starts when one becomes a wife or a husband, but it’s an entirely different story for Bettina Carlos-Eduardo whose life’s biggest blessing was gifted to her by God ten years ago in her daughter, Gummy. Mompreneur, author and content creator, Bettinna shared her ten-year-long single-motherhood journey during the Eden Speaks Mother’s Day Forum launched on Eden’s Facebook page last May 8 in an hour-long Facebook live event, underscoring how important showcasing unconditional love and support is for both single-moms, and all flavors of moms we are blessed to be surrounded with.

The impact of the past year manifests uniquely in each person. For mothers, the pressure of keeping a home afloat, waking up extra early to tend to the needs of her kids, working shortly afterwards, preparing meals, and making sure her kids are provided undivided attention and care. Navigating a tantamount of responsibilities, coupled with the collective fear of uncertainty, times were and continue to be difficult. But Bettinna believes that women, most especially mothers, are innately gifted with resilience to power through.

Eden has been an ally of Filipino moms for the past four decades. With all the fear and uneasiness of the world we live in today, mothers continue to be at the front and center of both the good and the bad, including single moms, which the Mondelez brand took to the spotlight for Mother’s Day. “I believe it is just right to bring to light the plight of single moms not only for them to receive support, but also for them to know that it is okay. It may not be the traditional route to having a family. But we accept our lot nonetheless,” shared Bettinna.

Eden is committed to continue advocating for the universal love and acceptance of all mothers. The brand’s recent campaign depicted the many facets of motherhood, and how distinctly unique each one is, just like Bettinna’s journey. When asked about how she powered through the last 10 years, and her sound advice for mothers who may be struggling, she said, “No amount of books, reading and research will truly prepare you. Ten years a parent and I still have not figured this out! Because what God has given us moms is a life that develops, is dynamic, and is responsive. I think that is the beauty of life – it is full of surprises and mysteries. Embrace every stage of your child’s life, every season you find your family in, and constantly pray for wisdom from the Lord on how to respond to every situation.”

It was not an easy feat to get her footing around how to become the best mom. Motherhood can feel like floating through a river with the wildest rapids every so often, but for Bettinna, there isn’t a single thing in those years she would ever change. “My parenting was not smooth and neither was it perfect. But it is through the challenges and facing the unknown that I learned and grown to be wiser. Mistakes and challenges are the best teachers only if you choose to respond positively to them. Nothing is ever wasted,” she added.

Ten years may be fleeting to some, but raising a child alone was Bettinna’s greatest achievement. There is no love that can ever be comparable to that of a mother’s, and Bettinna found some space in her heart to welcome another blessing from God that will support and guide her through this thing we call life. Having been recently married to an entrepreneur, a handful of things have changed in her life. “I used to be the only one contemplating on and making decisions, now there is someone to make them for our family. All I need to do is follow. I have a teammate in raising Gummy in the ways of our Faith. Someone to take her out on dates and bring her to her playdates when I am occupied. The Lord has been our provider and my partner for 10 years, yes. But it is just such a blessing to now have an actual partner in everyday life.”

A mother’s life evolves through the years, but one thing that is constant is her unconditional love. The #EdenSpeaksPH event culminated with an exclusive preview of the brand’s film directed by Antoinette Jadaone, entitled “Unconditional.” The film sheds light on the challenge single moms experience in finding acceptance and support. As a trusted ally of moms for years, Eden will continue to provide unconditional love and support for all flavors of motherhood, no matter their beginning.

Darren is staging a comeback concert entitled Home Run

Sought-after performer Darren Espanto took to TikTok Exclusive to reconnect with fans after finally returning home following months spent in lockdown abroad. The now 20-year old Darren sported a new, more grown-up look, but remained casual and candid with fans who tuned in to his live stream on TikTok.

"I'm past my teenage years, and through life you'll experience different things, and I guess I've been able to incorporate that in my own music which makes it a lot more mature, not just from the sound but also from the lyrics that are in it," said the more mature Darren.

One of the more recent life experiences that Darren talked about during the TikTok Exclusive was the time he spent in lockdown in Canada. He and his mom left the Philippines on March 15, 2020, right when the community quarantine was announced. Darren shared that he became anxious over what would happen to performers during the pandemic, but also took his time abroad as an opportunity to bond with family members, his sister in particular.

Darren shared that the situation was better in Canada, but it wasn't always easy for their family since both his parents are medical frontliners. "You really have to appreciate the small things in life," he said, while recalling the times when his parents needed to isolate, and they couldn't even eat together as a family. The day-to-day situation was tense, and it was especially trying at Christmas time, when the second wave happened, and Darren and his sister couldn't even get close to their parents over the holidays.

His new appreciation for the simple things gave Darren a whole new perspective. Something he now says he misses about his time in Canada was not being recognized when he would go out. He even shared a story about how he was able to go to the grocery store in his pajamas, without anyone finding out who he was.

Now back in Manila, Darren is back to work, with a new song to share with his fans. At his TikTok Exclusive, Darren shared that he is excited for everyone to watch the music video for his new song, Tama Na, which will debut on June 20. Darren will also be staging a comeback concert entitled Home Run, which streams worldwide on June 19 at 8:00 PM, with a special rerun on June 20 at 10:00 AM.

According to Darren, the evolution of one's music doesn't stop, even during a pandemic. He recorded Tama Na over a video call with songwriter Zack Tabudlo, who wrote the song in just one day. Darren said that this track is different from anything he has released before, and is more mature than his previous tracks. The song talks about letting go of toxic relationships. "Kailan mo sasabihing Tama Na," a fan asked Darren through TikTok's Q&A Feature. His reply was, "Kung medyo toxic na at parehas na kayong hindi masaya. You should learn to let go if it's gonna be beneficial for the both of you."

One of the highlights of his TikTok Exclusive was when Darren taught viewers the steps for his Tama Na dance challenge on TikTok.

Having been in the showbiz industry for 7 years, Darren has learned a lot of important lessons. One is the importance of putting in the work. He shared, "You have to work hard for it if you really want something to happen. You can't just wait for it to happen."

Another valuable lesson, and one he would have wanted to share with the younger version of himself, is to refrain from sharing your entire life on social media. Instead, you should reserve some things for yourself. Darren added, "Reserve a few things for the people who are close to you and people who you truly trust."
