Palawan Pawnshop customers can enjoy greater bills payment convenience and security with Bayad’s “Tatak-Sigurado” seal

The bills payment service of Palawan Pawnshop – Palawan Express Pera Padala is taken on another level with Bayad, the country’s most trusted payments authority.

For 35 years, Palawan Pawnshop has served as a one-stop money shop offering various financial services through its more than 3,000 outlets covering 79 out of the 81 provinces in the country. Bayad, on the other hand, has over 20 years of experience in providing end-to-end outsourced payment solutions.

The coming together of these two stalwarts means Palawan Pawnshop customers can enjoy greater bills payment convenience and security with Bayad’s “Tatak-Sigurado” seal, which ensures the integrity and privacy of every transaction.

At this point, about 60% of Palawan Pawnshop branches nationwide are already powered by Bayad and more outlets are being integrated in its platform. Upon completion, all Palawan Pawnshop branches across the country can readily process over 300 types of bills across its counters, including payments for electricity, water, telco, cable and internet, credit cards, and even for government contribution fees.

Bayad President and CEO, Lawrence Y. Ferrer expressed, “In parallel with our digitalization efforts, we continue to strengthen the physical aspect of our business as a great number of Filipinos, especially in far-flung areas, still do not have full access to financial services. This is a need that calls upon companies like us and Palawan Pawnshop to address because we have established on-ground expertise and network.”

Palawan Pawnshop President and CEO Bobby Castro added, “We believe that collaboration is key to further enhance the services we provide to customers as we continue to expand in the provinces, aiming to reach more municipalities and remote towns nationwide.”

Both companies view the partnership as a contribution to achieving a financially inclusive Philippines, emphasizing the importance of championing both the digital and physical channels to deliver much-needed financial services.

Early this year, Bayad launched its all-in-one pera transaction mobile app called Bayad and web-based payment platform called Bayad Online for digitally inclined payers. It also continues to boost its physical payment footprint with over 50,000 touchpoints nationwide.

My TCL 10 5G Review

My first encounter with TCL’s smartphone was a couple of years ago when they launched the TCL PLEX here in the Philippines.

I represented my partner’s blog back then and I was among the first to try out the smartphone. I was immediately impressed with the design and display and I knew they would be a contender in the local smartphone market.

However, the brand seemed to lie low after that, maybe due to the global pandemic, and I haven’t heard of any followup to the PLEX.

But last month, I got invited to the launch of TCL’s new smartphones and tablets, and learned that they were now going to be distributed by VST-ECS. I knew they were in good hands and going to be more aggressive this time around, as VST-ECS was one of the leading tech distributors in the country.

True enough TCL Philippines in partnership with VST ECS announced not just one but two smartphones--the TCL 20 SE and the TCL 10 5G. Both premium, yet affordable Android devices that leverages the company’s self-curated visual technology called NXTVISION.

Now we all know that TCL is one of the leading TV brands and their displays are among the best, so I was pretty excited when they gave me the chance to review the TCL 10 5G.

The company’s first 5G-enabled smartphone, the TCL 10 5G is designed to bring the benefits of 5G connectivity to consumers looking for something modern and affordable. With a large 6.53-inch display, a Snapdragon 765G chipset, quad cameras and a large capacity battery, and a price tag that’s not too steep, is this the 5G phone to get?

Lets head on to our review.

But first the specs:

TCL 10 5G SPECS:

DISPLAY: 6.53-inch FHD+ (1080 x 2340) Dotch display |HDR10, 395PPI, Dedicated display engine w/ NXTVISION tech

PROCESSOR: Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G CPU Adreno 620 GPU

MEMORY: 6GB RAM 128GB storage microSD card up to 1TB (dedicated slot)

CAMERAS:

 Quad rear cameras:

• 64MP F1.89 (main)

• 8MP F2.2 (ultra-wide)

• 5MP F2.2 (macro)

• 2MP F2.4 (depth)

Front Camera

•16MP F2.2

BATTERY: 4,500mAh battery w/ 18W Quick Charge 3.0 support

CONNECTIVITY: Single SIM | 5G, 4G LTE | WiFi 802.11 ac, 2×2 MIMO |Bluetooth 5.0 |NFC

GPS, A-GPS, BeiDou, Galileo, GLONASS, QSS

SIZE AND WEIGHT: 163.65 x 76.56 x 9.05mm | 210g

Rear-mounted fingerprint scanner

USB Type-C

3.5mm audio jack

Chrome Blue, Mercury Gray

UNBOXING.

The TCL 10 5G comes in a white box with a photo of the device on front and the Hi-RES Audito and 5G Qualcomm labels on the bottom corner. The tagline Display Greatness is on the top while on the sides are its quick specs.

Slide the top lid and you’ll find the TCL 105G phone, and the standard contents including paper documents, sim tray ejector tool, wall adapter, USB TypeC cable, and a jelly case.

DESIGN AND BUILD.

The unit I have is Chrome Blue, which I prefer than the other color option which is Black. It looks very premium and elegant thanks to its shiny gradient finish. It does feel a bit slippery and as expected it can be a fingerprint and smudge magnet, so I suggest you use the plastic case, to prevent any accidental drops.

The design on the TCL 10 5G reminded me a lot of the PLEX with the horizontal camera placement on the back and the positioning of the fingerprint scanner. On the right you have the power button and volume keys and while on the left is the sim card tray and a “smart key” which thankfully is programmable.

You'll appreciate the fact that the TCL 10 5G still includes a headphone jack on the top of the phone --which is becoming a rarity on many smartphones these days. On the bottom of the phone is the USB charging port and the loudspeakers.

DISPLAY and MULTIMEDIA:

Up front is the a 6.53-inch FHD+ Dotch display, providing an impressive 91 percent screen-to-body ratio. It has a Full HD resolution with 395ppi and IPS panel and comes with HDR10 support. The display I have to say is one of the best for its price range with nice colors and contrast.  But it gets even better when you turn on NXTVISION. NXTVISION is TCLs proprietary feature where you can toggle Image enhancement to automatically enhance image contrast, sharpness, and dark details. You can also adjust color modes and temperature, activate reading and eye comfort modes or increase readability under sunlight. In short you can adjust the display to that one that suits you best.

As for audio, the single down-firing speaker works fine and is loud enough for watching YouTube, or Netflix or listening to Spotify.

For me, I use it mostly to watch the Facebook Live and Re-live of my favorite online bag sellers. As I have been watching bags live selling lately, I figured out that I need a second phone to watch and do screenshots of bags that I like. I think I’ve learned enough should I plan to do FB live selling in the future.

CAMERAS:

On the back, the TCL 10 5G sports a quad-camera setup that includes a 64MP high-resolution main camera, a 118-degree ultra-wide-angle camera, a macro camera that lets users take super close-up shots at only 2cm away, and a depth camera for professional quality photos with Bokeh.

Now online selling  entails taking pics of bag flatlays and with the TCL 10 5G I can take photos of the bags I plan to eventually sell online.

Sample Shots

Since we are also now starting to go out more the ultra-wide angle is great for taking landscape photos or just to capture the scenery.

Now my partner is the one who usually takes my photos but when he’s not around, the TCL 10 5G’s front-facing 16MP camera has been very helpful, and the beauty filters are just enough to enhance and smoothen your skin without making it look artificial.

PERFORMANCE AND BATTERY

Now I’m not really much of a hardcore phone user, but throughout my two-week use of the TCL 10 5G I’ve never had any problems or encountered any severe slowdown. Browsing the web or my facebook and instagram feeds were smooth and opening apps were fast.

The TCL 10 5G comes with a large 4500 battery which lasted me more than a full day of average phone use. It also features On-the-Go Reverse Charging, turning the phone into a portable power bank to charge devices should an emergency arise.

Oh and lastly the because it is already a 5G-ready phone, you can experience the fastest mobile internet possible making the TCL 5G future-proof for the next few years.

CONCLUSION:

The TCL 10 5G is priced at PHP 17,990, which makes it one of the more affordable 5G-enabled midrange smartphones in the market.

I love the big and clear display and NXTVISION makes it look even better. The cameras do a fine job of producing nice-looking photos and the battery lasts long enough for those who use their phone mostly for web browsing and social media.

I would recommend this 5G- ready phone that is if youre looking for a secondary phone because of its nice display and battery life.

As mobile gaming and esports continue to gain massive ground in the country, realme Philippines aims to strengthen its position in the industry by catering to the diverse needs of mobile gamers and streamers. With this goal in mind, the country’s no. 1 smartphone brand for Q1 2021 teamed up with cosplay icon, entrepreneur and gaming royalty Alodia Gosiengfiao to further empower the local gaming community to capture infinite possibilities.

Having been in the gaming and cosplay industry since her teenage years, Alodia has managed to break through barriers and cement her place in this fast-growing scene. “I’ve always had the mindset that gaming is and should be for everyone,” shares Alodia. “When I started out, there were people who would tend to ‘gatekeep’ the industry based on what or who they think gamers should be. But despite that, I stayed true to my core and focused on my craft because this is something I’m truly passionate about,” she adds.

Since being part of the realme Squad in 2020, Alodia shares how realme’s wide range of quality tech products perfectly complement her day-to-day life. Capturing infinite gaming possibilities with 5G

The rise of 5G infrastructure and its increasing access in the country ultimately set the stage for an enhanced experience for mobile gamers and esports enthusiasts. For Alodia, the 5G revolution opens up a plethora of possibilities in the industry.  “I’ve always believed in the power of 5G. Not only does it allow for smoother gameplay and performance, but it also ensures reliable communication among players which is key to winning team games”, shares the realme ambassador.

As the leading smartphone brand in the country, realme is ready to lead the 5G race with its latest 5G game-changer, the realme 8 5G, which Alodia teased ahead of its official launch in her livestream last June 16.

In addition, realme’s latest 5G innovation also comes with a 5000mAh massive battery with 18W Type-C Quick Charge, guaranteeing longer battery life with rapid charging technology for extended periods of gaming.

“I’m really looking forward to the response of the gaming community with the launch of the realme 8 5G. I’m sure they will love it as much as I do,” shares Alodia.

World Vision highlights child protection and peacebuilding in the Marawi Week of Peace

Child-focused NGO World Vision Development Foundation conducted a series of child protection and peace-building activities during the celebration of the Marawi Week of Peace, spearheaded by the Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM) in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur.

World Vision provided school bags, notebooks and pens with learning materials promoting child protection to at least 1,679 students from five public schools.

In partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd), the Ministry of Basic Higher Technical and Madaris Education and the Marawi Operation Center, World Vision also conducted mental health and psychosocial support activities for 90 parents and 60 children.

Rommel V. Fuerte, World Vision’s National Director in the Philippines shared, “It has been a great honor for us to work with TFBM, the city government of Marawi, and all government agencies and partners towards building back a better Marawi, where children can thrive and fulfill their dreams”. Fuerte encouraged everyone to achieve hope, joy, and justice for all children.

To help families augment their daily food needs, promote nutrition, and maintain good health especially of children, World Vision also distributed 400 packs of vegetable seeds such as eggplant, pechay, okra, and string beans to supported barangays.

Hand washing facilities were also constructed in five World Vision-assisted communities, including one that was launched opened during the Week of Peace in the effort to also fight the COVID-19 pandemic through access to water and hygiene facilities.

It has been four years since World Vision started its emergency and recovery response and other child-focused programs to complement the government’s efforts and assist thousands of affected civilians and displaced families in the aftermath of the violent city-wide armed clash which massively devastated Marawi in May 2017.

World Vision, globally, also observes the United Nations’ World Refugee Day to celebrate the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home countries or displaced internally, to escape conflict for safety and protection. World Refugee Day is an occasion to build empathy and understanding for their plight and to recognize their resilience in rebuilding their lives.

Currently, World Vision implements two projects namely the Urban Child Protection Project and the Marawi Peace and Protection Project-Phase which promotes peacebuilding among the youth, education, child protection in schools and the communities among others. Both projects aim to cover a total of 12 barangays with 6,800 children as target beneficiaries.

Alfamart shares keys to success as it celebrates 7th anniversary

Alfamart, the first and only Super Minimart chain in the Philippines, has had quite an admirable rise from obscurity. From the fledgling first store in Trece Martires, Cavite in June of 2014, it has grown to over 1000 stores in a span of seven years.

This achievement was the result of a number of factors. Surely, being partnered with a retail luminary such as SM Investments Corporation (SMIC) was a significant facet to their success. However, Alfamart Philippines COO Harvey T. Ong credits the brand’s accomplishment to Alfamart’s people-centric culture and its people. “Since we started in the Philippines, we made sure to adopt the core values of the founders of Alfamart and SM,” Ong said.

Ong was referring to Alfamart founder Djoko Susanto, a self-made billionaire and one of the top Indonesian entrepreneurs, and the late Henry Sy, Sr., founder of SM.

Both men had similar rags-to-riches stories. In the same way that Henry Sy Sr. started SM by selling borrowed shoes from a store and turned it into what it is today, Djoko Susanto started Alfamart in 1999 and was able to make it grow from a single store into more than 17,000 all over Indonesia today.

The founders are the constant inspiration of every Alfamart staff member as they serve their customers.

COVID-19 and the ensuing lockdowns failed to stop Alfamart’s expansion, and a lot of that is attributed to the dedicated Alfamart staff--from management to store frontliners. Alfamart took measures to keep its employees safe, especially at the height of the pandemic: free shuttle service, WFH arrangements, reassignment of staff to closer branches and many others. “It is important to care for our staff because the employee experience and the customer experience are directly linked,” said Charity Trinidad, Alfamart’s Assistant Vice President for Human Resources. "We have to look out for our employees so they can provide excellent customer service,” she added.

Charity knew very well the challenges of keeping employees motivated. “Empathic Leadership is important for leaders of any organization to have. Leaders should be able to understand the people under their charge, their needs, feelings and thoughts,” she said. “Part of the importance of empathy in leadership is being able to provide emotional guidance and encouragement to their team members,” she continued.

To ensure that team members stay connected, Alfamart launched an online platform called AlfaCares. It allowed staff from even the far-flung stores to be heard and be guided through tough times, whether it be their personal or professional struggles.

Alfamart also pivoted in their training and quickly adopted e-learning to continuously upgrade their staff’s skills.

Technology was equally crucial in ensuring that communication remained seamless during times when Alfamart employees worked from remote locations, outside of the corporate offices. Lerry Sangalang, Alfamart’s AVP for Information Technology (IT), realized this when he was suddenly thrust into the forefront and had to rely on both his leadership and technological skills. “My team relied on me more to guide them during these uncertain times. I realized that little acts of kindness to one another or going the extra mile went a long way for others,” he said.

“As we look back at the seven years that we’ve been serving the communities, we believe that leadership values imparted to us by Alfamart and SM’s founders guided us through the toughest times. These values will continue to guide us in serving our communities better,” Ong concluded.
