“We take it day-by-day and we continue with our dreams. Talagang akma yung linyang we find ways eh. Hindi ka dapat bumitaw kase may paraan para maitawid ang buhay,” paliwanag pa nya.

Kahit hindi pa tapos ang laban ng mundo sa pandemya, naniniwala pa rin si Hidilyn na darating din ang happy ending. “Ang challenge naman hindi binibigay kung hindi kayang lagpasan. Kaya advice ko sa ating mga kabayan, tuloy lang ang buhay. Kayang-kaya ‘yan kabayan!”

Gretchen Ho: 'Meeting NBA legends only humbled me down'

Volleyball may have been Gretchen Ho’s ticket to fame as one of the Ateneo Lady Eagles’ Fab Five during the 2010s — the sport that paved her way to being a celebrity athlete and journalist. But catch the PLDT ambassador in a heart-to-heart, and she’ll let you in on her first great love — basketball.

“My dad was a basketball player in his youth, so he would always teach us how to play and keep us abreast with the latest basketball games. My three brothers and I grew up to be basketball lovers! We’re a very sporty family, so enjoying the NBA with them was just one natural way we bonded together,” Gretchen recalls.

From an NBA fangirl to a bona fide sportscaster who has covered the games on location and met the league’s stars in person way back when, Gretchen — like many other basketball fans — has found new ways to enjoy the games despite the pandemic. The TV5 and One News anchor remains updated with the league’s 75th season through the NBA League Pass, the NBA’s premium live game subscription service. Using the League Pass, made more affordable and accessible through PLDT Home Fiber, Gretchen is able to watch the games and other exclusive content with the family — an experience that triggers many childhood memories and even life aspirations.

An NBA fangirl’s dream
One of Gretchen’s most memorable NBA moments was watching the historic Chicago Bulls – Utah Jazz Finals Game 6 back in 1998. At eight years old, she saw Michael Jordan steal the ball from Karl Malone, with the Jazz leading 86-85 and with 18.9 seconds left. A young Gretchen found herself sharing the victorious moment as MJ nailed that game-winning jumper to give the Bulls their sixth title.

“When Michael Jordan made his final winning shot, I was jumping up and down the bed in my pajamas! Sabi ko nga nung bata ako, pangarap ko maging NBA player — hindi WNBA, NBA talaga! I don’t know why I said that to my dad as a young girl!” she recalls with a laugh.

While the opportunity to be an NBA player remains a hoop dream, Gretchen was able to experience the next best thing: Covering the NBA All-Star Weekend twice in a row as a sports journalist.

“It was surreal for me and a great privilege. Seeing all the top NBA athletes come together to play felt like being in the Disneyland of basketball. It was great seeing how agile, strong, and flawless they were in their play,” she enthuses.

Among Gretchen’s biggest NBA fangirl moments were in 2018, when she interviewed Chris Bosh who was then set to retire from a blood clot injury; and in 2019, when she saw Michael Jordan himself in the historic Staples Center (now Crypto.com Arena) in Los Angeles.

“I’ve always loved every chance I got to tell these stories. As an athlete and a sports fan myself, I've always made sure to pour my heart into sharing these inspiring journeys to the audiences,” she says of the experience.

Her hardcourt inspiration

It is every sports fan’s dream to meet their idols in person. In Gretchen’s case, not only did she meet Golden State Warrior’s Stephen Curry, she also hosted two events for him during his time in Manila.

“Steph Curry is a phenomenal game changer—the first player in NBA history to make 3,000 career 3-pointers. And yet, he stays humble. I love who he is inside and outside the court. He’s very playful on the court and a great family man off it,” she shares.

Gretchen personally feels drawn to stories of underdogs who had fought through with nothing but perseverance — much like San Francisco’s Golden Boy.

“Beyond the games, what I love about the NBA are the inspiring stories the league's stars carry with them. It’s amazing how much hard work they put into their craft to stand out and make a mark among other great basketball players around the world,” she says.

“What I love the most are stories of players who have been undervalued yet have worked their way up with constant improvement, quality in performance, and commitment so they can be the best they could ever be. I think this is relatable to anybody who aspires to be better in whatever they do.”

A growing NBA community
It’s this underdog arc that Gretchen finds relatable to many Filipinos — known for pulling through adversity in any sport, career, or just about any situation.

“It’s no secret. Everywhere you go in the Philippines, there’s always a basketball court! If not a full one, there’s at least a makeshift one on some post or board,” she muses.

Gretchen especially feels delighted that Filipino athletes are now making it in the league. Take for example Utah Jazz’s Jordan Clarkson and Houston Rockets’ Jalen Green, she says, two Filipino-American athletes now sharing the NBA court for the first time and making a mark in the league.

“This just goes to show that the Filipino can make it. I love it when Jordan and Jalen openly acknowledge that they are Filipinos! It makes the dream to send a full-blooded Filipino even more reachable when you see the two of them doing well in the NBA!”

These days, even with no NBA field assignments, Gretchen stays updated with the league through her devices. As the excitement continuously piles up on the NBA’s historic 75th Anniversary Season, Gretchen remains connected to the world’s biggest basketball league — through the NBA League Pass powered by PLDT Home.

For fans like Gretchen who can get technical about the games, the NBA League Pass offers live stats and multiple viewing options. It also includes the NBA Mobile View, which delivers a closer shot of the action optimized for viewing on smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices.

“It is a great way to keep up with the jam-packed schedule of games, storylines, and tributes. With NBA League Pass, I’m able to watch the marquee games live and on-demand,” Gretchen says. “I also love that it has many great features — like using different camera angles so I can view every heart-stopping moment the way I want to!”

With NBA League Pass charged to your PLDT Home Fiber bill, Filipino homes can have a virtual front-row seat to a variety of games for as low as P85 a month!

PLDT Home remains the undisputed fastest broadband network in the Philippines after an impressive speed performance for the second half of 2021, dominating its telco rivals with a Speed Score™ of 77.24 at the Ookla® Speedtest Awards. With the brand’s fast and reliable internet connection, NBA fans can enjoy uninterrupted sports action and continue to be updated on the league and its biggest stars this season and beyond!

UN Women celebrated 66th session of the Commission on the Status of Women and International Women’s Day 2022

UN Women celebrated 66th session of the Commission on the Status of Women and International Women’s Day 2022 by hosting “Eco-Fluencer", a virtual panel discussion to spotlight female leaders championing sustainability and gender equality in their organizations.

This year, in honour of and the 66th session of the Commission on the Status of Women and International Women’s Day theme, UN Women put a spotlight on the intersectionality of gender inequality and climate change with an event on the theme: “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow,” underscoring how women and girls continue to bear the burden of climate change while leading empowerment and sustainability efforts across the globe.

Through , a virtual round-table discussion on female leaders and sustainable businesses, UN Women brought together Filipina champions of sustainability and gender equality to talk about achieving sustainability for women, by women in the Philippines.

The event, hosted by Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEP) Youth Leadership Champion awardee and AGREA CEO Cherrie Atilano, featured ECHOStore CEO, Chit Juan; Messy Bessy CEO, Krie Reyes-Lopez; and Unilever Philippines Head of Digital Commerce, Anna Mangilin, who shared their visions towards a more sustainable future and their advocacy in promoting women’s empowerment in their organizations.

Making sustainability a lifestyle

“When we founded ECHOStore, we wanted to show others that it is easy to live well while we make others live well,” explained Chit Juan. “Since the founders are all women, we wanted to create more opportunities for women producers, suppliers and partners.”

The sustainable lifestyle brand, ECHOStore, led to the creation of its non-profit arm, Empowering Communities with Hope and Opportunities through Sustainable Initiatives (ECHOSI), which supports marginalized groups, women entrepreneurs and cultural communities to create their own products through the sustainability value chain.

“Sustainability should always be reflected in the leadership. In the course of our daily business at Echo Store, we make sure that all of us — from the CEO and board members to the staff — live it, eat it, drink it and see it every day,” said Ms. Juan.

Creating scalable change for women

Messy Bessy, a pioneering local brand the produces eco-friendly personal care and home goods, creates social impact innovation through sustainable products and poverty-alleviation programmes.

“The future of sustainability is in regeneration – being able to replenish and restore what we use up, and building economies and communities that thrive, while allowing the planet to thrive as well,” said Krie Reyes-Lopez.

While creating products that are friendly to the environment, Messy Bessy also empowers underprivileged young women to become self-reliant through education and work opportunities under their work-study programme.

“These past two years, we shifted our focus to scaling and replicating our programmes. Faced with the reality of our own sustainability during the pandemic, we pitched our model to bigger organizations to ensure that we can continue providing opportunities for women in our communities,” said Ms. Lopez.

Building brands that care

As one of the world’s largest and most influential consumer goods companies, Unilever also places sustainability at the core of their business and operations.

Unilever is driven by a purpose of making sustainable living commonplace,” said Anna Mangilin. “Our brands are our gift to the people, and we make sure that our products are made and created with sustainability in mind. We do this by sourcing materials responsibly and shifting to renewable energy.”

Through their Condition for Greater Online Learning programme, Unilever leveraged their wide network of partners to provide women access to learning and resources at the beginning of the pandemic. “We always pivot our advocacy in order to serve the needs of our communities and consumers. At Unilever, we believe in both equality and equity and that everybody should be given what they need in order to succeed,” said Ms. Mangilin.

“Our focus now should be more on intergenerational well-being,” said Cherrie Atilano. “Business is no longer transactional. More importantly, it should be transformational. It should help transform us to be better, make us more mindful of our business and individual actions, and it is in this way that we can convert sustainability to resiliency in our communities.”

Eco-fluencer was organized by WeEmpowerAsia, a UN Women programme funded by the European Union that aims to increase sustainability and women's participation and leadership in business.

Shopee cultivates tech talent with overseas training and exposure

Over the last decade, technology has radically changed the way businesses all over the world look and operate.  Accompanying this meteoric change among businesses, is the need for different leadership traits.

According to Forbes[1], key traits that future leaders will need to possess include the ability to embrace technology and employ a global citizen mindset. This mindset includes celebrating diversity and understanding new cultures in order to gain knowledge on how to enter and succeed in new global markets. On the other hand, embracing technology will allow leaders to improve efficiency in the organization.

Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, continues to instill these fundamental traits into young, tech-driven talent through the Global Leaders Program. This year marks its fourth iteration as it continues to mold tech leaders of tomorrow.

The Global Leaders Program is a 2-year graduate program consisting of four 6-month local and overseas rotations open to final-year students and young professionals with up to two years of working experience. Participants can expect to receive mentorship from senior management, a rigorous training curriculum under the various Shopee departments, and the opportunity to work on highly impactful projects. And one of the key experiences of the Global Leaders Program is the opportunity to work in different Shopee markets across the region and gain pivotal exposure to the tech industry. Throughout the overseas rotation, Shopee will provide mobility support to GLP Associates to ensure hassle-free overseas accommodations and seamless visa applications.

Karen Perez, Head of People at Shopee Philippines, said “At Shopee, we understand how crucial developing a global perspective is in pushing the Philippine tech industry forward. Through the overseas rotations of the Global Leaders Program, we believe that we can help broaden the horizons of young Filipino talent. We are deeply committed to delivering more opportunities to hone the skills of young Filipino professionals and support the growth of our local digital economy.”

Jan, a GLP associate currently completing her second overseas rotation in Thailand under the Marketing Department, has shared what influenced her decision to apply. “The promise of diverse rotation and regional exposure at such a young age attracted me to the Global Leaders Program. I believe the program brings in many unique opportunities that would allow me to launch my career and create immediate impact.” she said.

For Lance, another GLP associate that is also currently assigned to Thailand, the opportunity to gain regional exposure abroad has provided him with a better understanding of our local situation. He shared, “Being able to live and work in the same company, but in a different country immediately provides me with a new ‘perspective’. This is quite useful because it helps me notice the differences between Thailand and the Philippines in terms of the needs of our buyers and sellers, organizational structure, and working-style. These differences helped me strategize on how we can better tailor our solutions or ways of working to fit different local contexts.”

Koko, on the other hand, completed his overseas training in Singapore last August 2021. Being trained abroad gave him the opportunity to grow as both a professional and an individual. He said,  “I was able to experience different work functions, roles, industries, and even markets in the short span of two years. I also had the opportunity to take on a lot of responsibility early on in my career, which helped me build confidence in my own knowledge and skills.”

Young Filipinos looking to challenge themselves and drive change in the tech industry are welcome to apply to Shopee’s Global Leaders Program here: https://careers.shopee.ph/GLP. The application period has been extended until April 30 2022.

Heeding the call to do more for the presidential bid of , celebrity supporters, led by actresses Angel Locsin and Marjorie Barretto, conducted house-to-house campaigns on Saturday (April 2) in various areas of the country.

Fresh from her Marawi City visit, Locsin spearheaded the house-to-house campaign in Cagayan de Oro City and Misamis Oriental where she urged fellow supporters to speak to 10 people a day and encourage them to vote for Robredo in the May elections.

Barretto, for her part, joined Aika Robredo, daughter of the Vice President, as they visited several barangays in Quezon City.

The veteran actress actually started her house-to-house campaign the other day as she visited some areas in Pasig City, where she convinced voters that Robredo is the most qualified to lead the country.

“This was the reason why I decided to do house-to-house yesterday with other volunteers because we want to convince more of our fellow Filipinos that VP Leni is the most qualified to lead our country,” Barretto said on Instagram.

The “PieDu” love team of actor Edu Manzano and actress Cherry Pie Picache went around a public market in Quezon City and talked to vendors who support other candidates about Robredo and her plans for the country.
