PHINMA Education will spearhead a conference to discuss and create solutions to reduce learning poverty

How do you tailor education to serve those who need it the most? To tackle this pressing global issue, multinational partnership Education@theMargins (E@TM): A Global Alliance invites aspiring and current educators, policymakers, and representatives of like-minded organizations to come together for a two-hour discussion on learning systems for poverty on October 28, 6 p.m., Philippine time.

In its second year, this year’s conference, “Serving the Underserved: Learning Systems for Poverty,” seeks to discuss what makes teaching students in circumstances of poverty different, and what pedagogical shifts can be taken to serve their learning needs.

“We believe that education experts and industry stakeholders must come together to discuss hard questions and encourage others to take part in creating solutions,” said PHINMA Education Chief of Corporate Affairs, Buen L. Bontigao.

The conference, spearheaded by PHINMA Education, will feature panelists from around the world. These resource persons include Dr. Nene Guevara, President of Synergeia Foundation (Philippines); Sujatha Muthayya, Vice-President of Policy and Partnerships-Asia of Bridge International Academies (Kenya); Jessica Rees-Jones, Founder of AfricaX Academy; and Dr. Charles Prince, Chief Higher Education Officer of Global Education Executives, Inc.

“When we launched E@TM in 2021, we envisioned a world where underserved youth are given access to quality education at prices they can afford, using the resources they have access to,” Bontigao explained. He noted that the world is still very far from reducing learning poverty, and by 2030, 43% of children will be learning-poor. The E@TM: Global Alliance hopes to drastically change that.

“We’ve already forged meaningful partnerships which show that many organizations across the world share our advocacy,” he added. Last year's conference featured  Christopher Bernido and the late Ma. Victoria Bernido of Central Visayan Institute Foundation (CVIF), Rafael Oliveira de Ávila of Ânima Educação (Brazil), Amanda Kelleher of Luminus Education (Jordan), Sandeep Aneja of Kaizenvest (India), Edna Novak of Teach for All, and Aape Pohjavirta of mobile learning app Funzi.

“We believe that country experts, global thought leaders, and technology pioneers together can positively impact more youth across the world, towards a future that is sustainable for all. That is why we hope to welcome more people to our Global Alliance,” Bontigao concluded.

Luftonic brings you state-of-the-art German air purifiers that are proven and certified to destroy live unwelcome Coronaviruses

As we try to effectively move past the era of the Pandemic, we have taken every bit of precaution that we can to ensure that we don’t allow COVID to take hold of us wherever we go. While we’re out, we go around in masks, we disinfect when we can, and we keep a safe distance from others in public. While we’re out, we do our best to have our guard up in an effort to stay healthy.

It’s a different case when we’re at home or when we’re working.

These are meant to be our safe spaces where we can ease up and be comfortable. Hence, it’s up to us to keep these safe spaces as safe as we possibly can and, when it comes to that, our comfort – our break from our everyday battle with COVID – is worth every effort. To make sure that the air we breathe at these places stay safe, Luftonic brings you state-of-the-art German air purifiers that are proven and certified to destroy live unwelcome Coronaviruses that may wander into your homes and workspaces.

According to studies, indoor air pollution is 10x worse than outdoor air pollution and can go even more if poorly ventilated.  While we can take all the precautions possible when we’re out and about, our home and workplaces are a different story. At work, we have to focus to perform our tasks efficiently and that becomes a challenge when you don’t have the peace of mind of being safe from a potentially deadly virus. The danger becomes even greater when it comes to areas that have centralized air conditioning as transmission is much faster in air-conditioned places.

Paired with the trend of how offices are slowly going back to being fully staffed with employees reporting back to work at full capacity face-to-face, the chances of virus exposure become really high. At home, we naturally have our guard down as it’s supposed to be a secure space for us to relax and recharge but should a guest, family member, or even a delivery person come in as a carrier of the virus, that comfort becomes compromised as we risk exposure while being in an environment where we are the least guarded. Viruses are always changing, and that can cause a new variant, or strain, of a virus to form, this is why we need to take the necessary precautions – we disinfect to take care of virus particles on surfaces, and we purify to take care of the virus particles in our air.

Not all Air Purifiers are created equal though. This is where Luftonic Air Purifiers come in as these are Medical-Grade Purifiers that have been tested and certified to remove 99.99% of indoor smoke, viruses,   bacteria, bio-aerosols, PM2.5 and ultra-fine particles down to 0.001μm, and total volatile organic compounds. The Luftonic LW8 specifically was made for smaller spaces and elevators which allows you to keep your personal area secure from any airborne pathogens and particles for up to 60 sqm. It also uses Cold Plasma Ionization Filtration Technology that was tested as the most effective clean air solution for HVAC integration as it generates millions of charge clusters that actively collide with viruses and bacteria to destroy them. It’s easy to operate, quietly runs in the background at 25dB, and also uses the next generation of Heavy-duty washable ULPA filters which saves you a lot on HEPA filter replacements and is proven to be 50x more effective than outdated HEPA filters that other air purifiers may require you to use, making it cost-effective on the long term.

With Luftonic, you can breathe easy and feel safe in the places that you need to be. For more information on the Luftonic LW8 and other similar products, you can visit https://luftonic.com/products/luftonic-lw-8-series-air-purifier.

narzo 50i Prime Review

Do you know what the most challenging part of being a mother is?

It’s not having to be on call for 24/7 duty, or the never-ending household chores. Nor is it taking care of unruly children or how frustrating it is to try and discipline them.

So unless you are filthy rich or one of the 433 winners of the recent Grand Lotto, I’m sure you’ll agree that the toughest task of being a mother is actually budgeting the family expenses.

Especially now with the inflation, you have to think twice—even thrice before making any purchase and even the P50 price difference matters.

And now with face-to-face classes coming back, we moms have to further stretch our budget to include transportation and food allowance once again.

That also means we have to save as much as we can from those items that we have to purchase.

SMARTPHONES? FROM WANT TO NEED

And this school year, one of the new “needs” of every student is a smartphone.

Unlike before when we only need phones to keep us connected with our children, the smartphone has become an essential tool for students especially for those instances when they have to attend online classes.

As moms we always have to look out for the most budget-friendly yet quality phones, it’s a good thing that with all the brands available we also have more options to choose from.

One brand that recently caught my attention is narzo—it’s a particularly new brand and if you haven’t heard about it, it used to be under realme—which is currently the no.1 smartphone brand in the Philippines.

Recently narzo has separated from realme (but don’t worry there is no controversy behind the split) to become a standalone brand, which again is good news for consumers since Narzo has been releasing a good lineup of “gaming” phones.

Narzo has also decided to adopt the budget-sulit approach, which is evident in its latest offering—the narzo 50i prime. If you follow my posts about tech, you probably read that the narzo 50i prime was the best-selling phone during the Shopee Payday Sale last August. Aside from being narzo’s most affordable model to date at only a PHP 4,399 initial selling price, the 50i Prime is also the titleholder for the fastest moving model of the narzo 50 series across all platforms selling out its entire inventory within 2 hours.

Now to further generate even more goodwill from its growing userbase, narzo has dropped the price of the narzo 50i prime to just PHP 3,999 across online and offline platforms nationwide for a limited time, making it even more affordable for those who are looking for their first smartphone (or backup phone).

The narzo 50i Prime has a 6.5” inch screen, a Unisoc Tiger T612 chipset, 3GB+32G storage expandable up to 1TB and a massive 5000mAh battery with reverse charging function.

I’ve been using it for the past few days, and I think it truly is one of the most sulit phones for all you budgetarians/ bargain hunters out there. Why? Here are my thoughts about the narzo 50i Prime.

What’s in the box?

The narzo 50i prime comes in the trademark skyblue box of narzo. Even though narzo wants to be known as a standalone brand the realme logo is still there perhaps as a guarantee that you are getting a quality product from a trusted manufacturer.

Inside the box you’ll find the narzo 50i prime unit, some paper documents,  sim ejector pin, and USB-micro USB charging cable. Sadly it doesn’t include a wall charger, but if you have one of those new extension cords it probably has a USB port already. Though most phones now go for USB-C, the microUSB is still the choice of many phones at this price point.

Design and Display

The narzo 50i Prime has a polycarbonate back with a stylish “vertical-stripe” design. It’s not a smudge or fingerprint magnet as other finishes but if you can find a case, its still better to use one to prevent unsightly scratches and scuffs.  Its available in two colors, Dark Blue and Mint Green, both look good and either one will probably suit different kinds of tastes. The narzo logo can be seen on the upper right, while the single camera module is located on the upper left.

Exploring the phone you’ll find the volume rocker and power button located on the right side, the sim tray is on the left, while the 3.5mm audio jack, microphone, Micro USB port, and speaker grille are all located at the bottom.

For the display the narzo 50i Prime has a 6.5 inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1600 x 720p and a pixel density of 270ppi. There is a drop notch that houses the selfie camera up front. Along with the IPS LCD display, it also carries the standard 60Hz refresh rate. It’s a pretty standard display with decent colors, good viewing angles and would suit most of your viewing requirements whether its for watching movies, browing or playing games. There’s also good brightness levels as long as you are indoors.

Audio is also at par with most other entry-level phones and it’s a good thing you can use your wired earphones for a more private viewing or listening experience.

CAMERAS

The narzo 50i prime has a couple of no-nonsense cameras, an 8MP shooter on the back and a 5MP selfie camera. The two cameras are capable enough to get you decent usable photos as long as you have enough or good lighting. If your kid will be using this phone, there are several modes they can experiment with as they learn more about photography.

In our photo tests, I can say it takes good photos for an entry-level smartphone. You can also shoot videos up to 1080p resolution at 30fps but make sure you use a tripod or set it on a stable position to avoid shaky footage especially if you are going to use if for tiktok videos.

For selfies, again the quality of the photos will depend on the situation, find good lighting to get better photos, and try to hold still until it finishes processing. Again as I mentioned earlier, the narzo 50i prime can get you good photos as any of its entry level peers—sometimes even better.

PERFORMANCE AND SOFTWARE

The narzo 50i prime has a Unisoc T612 processor that’s paired with a 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. Honestly, its not the fastest or smoothest but it does the job and can handle most of the usual tasks of a smartphone like browsing the internet for research, posting on social media, watching YouTube, and playing casual games---just don’t do it all at once. The 32GB of storage also limits the type of games you can install, but if you have an extra microSD you can definitely store more on this phone as it can handle up to 1TB  compared to others which max out at 128GB.

In terms of software, the smartphone is based on Android 11 and is skinned with realme UI Go Edition. This Go Edition is a bit lighter and looks more like stock android comparing it with other narzo/realme phones.

The good thing is that there are only a few pre-installed software with no bloatware to slow it down on your first boot. The user interface is clean and very easy to understand and navigate even for younger kids.

One of the unique features of the narzo 50i prime is its massive 5,000mAh battery. Now that’s something important if your kid would be using their smartphone all day at school. It also supports reverse charging so you could use it to top up your other devices in case of emergencies. As expected, there is no fast charging and it would take around 2 ½ hours to fully charge the battery, so overnight charging might be a good idea.

Conclusion

At its P4990 the narzo 50i prime is a good recommendation, but with the price dropping at Php3,999, it makes it an even better choice for those who are in a tight budget and only need a phone for the basics. For an entry-level device it has a pretty nice design, a big clear screen, and a long-lasting battery--and for those who prioritize those things, the narzo 50i prime is definitely worth checking out.

7-Eleven successfully gathered the community back on the road for the 10th installment of the 7-Eleven Run Series

No more virtual running this time around as leading convenience store chain 7-Eleven successfully gathered the community back on the road for the 10th installment of the 7-Eleven Run Series.

From newbies, pro runners such as triathlete Nikko Huelgas, running and fitness icons Bubbles Paraiso and Noelle de Guzman, to casual runners joined by their friends and families – everyone showed up to the two-day physical event last September 24 and 25. More than  37,000 runners from all over the country joined in the simultaneous run that happened in Manila at Filinvest, AlabangCebu at Cebu Business Park, Ayala Center and Davao at SM City Davao Ecoland.

After conquering the 7-Eleven Run 2022, the top three (3) male and female Overall  Filipino winners from the 21KM, 32KM, and 42KM categories will bring their strides to the international stage. Each will have the chance to make their mark and represent the Philippines in the Techcombank Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam International Marathon on December 11, 2022.

Christine Hallasgo, Ruffa Sorongon, and Nhea Ann Barcena led the female category, while Prince Joey Lee, Jimboy Lugay, and Roy Laudittriumphed in the male category for the 21KM event.

From its maiden edition in 2013, to the first simultaneous runs in 2018, up to the back-to-back virtual runs during the pandemic, we are glad to bring our community together, face-to-face, once again.  This great comeback for the 7-Eleven Run 2022 would not be possible without the generous help from all of our partners and sponsors, and of course all the participants who eagerly joined the resumption of our most popular 7-Eleven event,”  says Jose Victor P. Paterno, President and CEO of Philippine Seven Corp.

Runners from all nine (9) distance categories: 3KM, 5KM, 5KM Buddy, 10KM, 10KM Buddy, 16KM, 21KM, 32KM, and 42KM, were awarded medals, cash prizes and special gifts from this year’s sponsors per race category  for top ranking participants ranging from P2,000 to P25,000 as they crossed the finish line.

#itsGoTyme as the Gokongwei Group partners with Singapore-based Tyme Group to launch financial solutions for Filipinos

#itsGoTyme as the Gokongwei Group partners with Singapore-based Tyme Group to launch financial solutions that are designed to offer Filipinos with a high-quality banking experience. GoTyme Bank combines a high-tech with a high-touch approach to bring financial solutions closer to more Filipinos. The GoTyme Bank “phygital” model, which combines physical touchpoints such as kiosks and bank ambassadors with secure digital transactions will help more Filipinos reach their full financial potential.

The last 10 years has seen an acceleration in fintech with digital banks and e-wallets, and the pandemic has accelerated the adoption of digital payments. While many Filipinos have become comfortable with access to fintech through basic accounts and cashless payments, there are still many financial solutions in the digital space that remains untapped in the local market.

Unlocking Potential

During the launch held last October 20 in Makati City, Nate Clarke, GoTyme Bank President and CEO, shared how GoTyme Bank’s next-level banking experience will be able to address gaps in Filipino financial services. “Less than 3% of Filipinos have access to affordable credit, such as a credit card. Which means they are often paying 10-20% per month for their short term borrowing needs. Less than 3% of Filipinos have access to insurance and less than 3% of Filipinos have access to high yield investments, such as stock and equities.”

He notes that Filipinos have unmet financial needs. “Every year millions of smart, employed Filipinos fall short of their potential because they do not have access to high-quality banking products. Through GoTyme Bank, we are here to unlock the financial potential of all Filipinos.”

High-Quality Perks

Albert Tinio, GoTyme Bank’s Co-CEO and Chief Commercial Officer shares how customers will enjoy the convenience of having accessible touchpoints. “At GoTyme we thought that going digital does not mean losing our human touch. In fact, it became our call out, to be digital and physical at the same time, “phygital” so to speak. To keep the human connection always, GoTyme Bank will have kiosks that are strategically located across the Robinsons ecosystem. With our next-level customer service, these kiosks will always have a bank ambassador to guide you through the process. Using kiosks, we aim to solve access and extend reach. By deploying kiosks to Robinsons retail stores and malls, you can now create an account where you shop, eat and relax."

The GoTyme Bank debit card allows you to make transactions 24/7 from local and international ATMs. For further convenience, one can also deposit and withdraw for free at Robinsons-affiliated retail outlets. There are already 15 kiosks in select Robinsons supermarkets that are ready to serve customers, with more locations set to open in the coming weeks. The GoTyme website will be constantly updated to show all the locations across Robinsons supermarkets and department stores.

3S : Send, Shop, and Save

GoTyme Bank’s Head of Brand Marketing and Growth, Raymund Villanueva and Chief Product Officer, Daniel Stacey shared the value propositions one can expect with a GoTyme Bank account. With the GoTyme Bank debit cards, sending money, shopping and saving become more convenient as this can be used for both online and in-store transactions here and abroad.

With Go Send, GoTyme Bank customers can easily and securely transfer funds from the app, with three free transfers a week, on top of the free GoTyme to GoTyme transfers.

The Go Shop feature gives customers a better shopping experience. With each swipe of their GoTyme debit card, a customer earns 3 times Go Rewards points at partner Robinsons stores and 1 point if they shop anywhere else making it one of the better modes of payment for the Gokongwei Group. These points can also be redeemed as cash, straight from their mobile apps.

With Go Save, one will earn interest with no worries on promo durations, minimum balances or maximum caps. GoTyme Bank also introduced “Save Your Change”, which allows you to save by rounding up to the nearest 10 or 100 pesos and putting that amount automatically in to your Go Save accounts.

The better choice

Lance Gokongwei, who heads the Gokongwei Group, shares how GoTyme Bank aligns with their vision for the Philippines. “The mission of GoTyme Bank to unlock every Filipino’s financial potential presents another great opportunity for us at the Gokongwei Group to deliver on our purpose, which is ‘an unrelenting commitment to provide our customers with better choices, creating shared success with our stakeholders.’ Together with our partner Tyme Group, we are all set to disrupt the industry and make GoTyme Bank the ‘better choice’ that will provide greater financial empowerment for Filipinos. At the heart of this meaningful breakthrough is our deep commitment to improve the lives of our fellowmen, and to ultimately help bring forth a more prosperous society.”

By leveraging the Gokongwei Group’s extensive ecosystem, GoTyme Bank will be able to provide Filipinos with greater access to high quality banking products. The bank’s digital kiosks are deployed across the group’s retail and real estate footprint, which is highly integrated into the daily lives of Filipinos. This democratizes the delivery of financial services to address the needs of all Filipinos regardless of age, income, or geography.
