Beyond the Bottle: ‘Tatak ng Tapang, Tatak Ginebra’ Celebrates the Battle Scars of Courage

Ginebra San Miguel, the world’s largest-selling gin, once again raises the bar in brand storytelling with its newest campaign, “Tatak ng Tapang, Tatak Ginebra,” a powerful evolution of its long-standing celebration of Filipino courage. This time, the spotlight is on real people—four personalities whose strength is etched not in fiction, but in the very scars they carry on their bodies.

According to Sales and Marketing Manager Allan Mercado, the campaign, which was launched digitally on December 31 to usher in the new year, marks a meaningful shift. “This is different from the past. We are honoring actual people—ordinary individuals whose stories our consumers can truly relate to. Our hope is that they inspire others through their authenticity and relatability to pursue their dreams, no matter how big on ambiguous.

From Conceptual Bayani to Real-Life Heroes

For years, Ginebra San Miguel has been synonymous with courage, resilience, and the “never-say-die” spirit. In 2025, our campaign celebrated the idea of the kabayani—teachers, jeepney drivers, nurses, and ordinary workers whose quiet heroism defined modern/ everyday bayanihan.

“The concept of the “bayani” was born during the pandemic, when heroism took on new meaning. Today, we move toward real-life heroes—people who have actual battle scars to show. These are everyday heroes in their own fields, whose grit and discipline prove what true tapang looks like,” says Marketing Manager Ron Molina.

These scars—visible on the hands, feet, and faces of mountaineer and Mt. Everest conqueror Miguel Mapalad, visual artist Auggie Fontanilla, PBA top draft pick Sonny Estil, and billiards champion Chezka Centeno—are not hidden. They are worn proudly, like badges of honor. For Ginebra San Miguel, these marks are the true “Tatak ng Tapang,” proof of battles fought, endured, overcome and won.

‘Lahat Tayo May Tatak ng Tapang’

At the heart of the campaign is a universal truth: everyone faces battles in life. Each of us has our own struggles, our own challenges. Yet, within each of us lies courage—the courage to confront obstacles, fight for what matters, and pursue our dreams—for our families, for ourselves, and for our nation.

“This is the kind of courage that never retreats and never gives up, no matter the challenge. It is the courage that pushes us to persevere until we achieve our goals,” says Ron. “Yan ang Tatak ng Tapang. Yan ang Tatak Ginebra.”

Who else could personify the “tatak ng tapang” than Miguel Mapalad, as he conquered the cold, exhaustion, and dangers to reach the top of the world. His dream: to become one of the Filipinos to summit Mount Everest. Years of rigorous training across the globe tested his limits, but his courage never wavered.

“Reaching the peak of the Philippines and other mountains in the world was not enough— Mount Everest was my ultimate goal. Every step, every pull, every push, even in the face of pain, left the mark of courage imprinted on me until I finally stood on top of the world,” says Miguel, as he proudly showed a photo of Ginebra San Miguel at the base camp, which he enjoyed to keep warm and shared with other mountaineers.

For Auggie, his “tatak ng tapang” can be seen in the streets of Manila. Once working in the publishing industry, he chose to leave it behind to follow the passionate call of his art as a graffiti artist. By day, he hustled to make a living; by night, he painted the city’s walls. Earnings were small, but he never gave up. Over time, his works gained recognition, and today he is a lead artist at The Clothing and the Pilipinas Street Plan Collective. Auggie’s murals are more than art—they are statements of courage, painted day and night.

Seeing PBA player Sonny Estil earn scores for the Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings, one will not imagine how he began: at the start, he was only lent shoes that didn’t fit; today, he is a first-round draft pick.

Growing up in hardship, working as a farmer and a carpenter, Sonny played in local leagues with lent shoes that were tight and painful. Yet he endured the pain, training every day until he made the game-winning shot at the Draft Combine. Now, as a first-round pick for Barangay Ginebra, Sonny carries the mark of courage in every step he takes on the PBA court.

Eye on the ball, eye on the prize. This is also the same “tatak ng tapang” with Chezka Centeno, world 10-Ball champion billiards player. Chezka learned to play billiards at a young age in modest bars and halls in Zamboanga, where she was the only female playing against the men. Despite numerous losses, she never lost hope. Through relentless practice and determination, she won one pool battle after another, rising to international competitions. In 2025, she was crowned the WPA Women’s World 10-Ball Champion, using billiards not only for her personal success but also to lift her family from poverty. Today, with “Tatak ng Tapang,” the ball is in her hand, and the world is her pool.

A Truly Filipino Brand

“We celebrate courage in its most authentic form—Miguel, Auggie, Sonny, and Chezka are not celebrities or from well-off families, but they have shown what Tatak ng Tapang is all about—that when they face life’s challenges head-on, persevere against all odds, and inspire others through their strength, grit, and never-say-die spirit, they become real-life heroes,” says Group Product Manager Paolo Jose Tupaz.

Through “Tatak ng Tapang, Tatak Ginebra,” the brand continues its legacy of honoring courage—this time, through real faces, real scars, and real stories.

More Than 10,000 Smiles Transformed: AS Watson Reaches Major Milestone in Cleft Lip Care

AS Watson, the world’s largest international health and beauty retailer, celebrates its 185th anniversary - a journey from Hong Kong’s first western pharmacy to a global retail leader. This milestone also marks a major achievement in its “Give a Smile” campaign with Operation Smile: surpassing its goal of 10,000 free surgeries for children with cleft conditions ahead of schedule. AS Watson now sets a new target - 15,000 surgeries by 2030 - reaffirming its commitment to brighter futures for our next generation.

A Legacy of Care and Purpose

Reflecting on this journey, Dr Malina Ngai, Group CEO of AS Watson, said, “As we mark 185 years, I am deeply proud of how AS Watson has grown from a single pharmacy in Hong Kong to a global leader in health and beauty retail. Our journey is defined not just by growth, but by the countless smiles we’ve helped create - for our customers, our people, and the communities we serve. I am grateful to our 130,000 colleagues, our loyal customers, and our partners for their dedication and trust. Together, we will continue to create smiles—one at a time, for everyone.”

185 Years of Inspiring Smiles

From the very beginning, AS Watson believes that health and happiness should never be a privilege. In the early days, we offered free medicines to those in need because seeing smiles on the faces of the people we served mattered most. For 185 years, AS Watson has placed care for customers and communities at the heart of our journey, a commitment that continues to shape everything we do today.

This enduring spirit of care inspired the launch of the global “Give a Smile” campaign in 2018, supporting comprehensive cleft care to improve children’s physical and emotional wellbeing. Guided by the belief that “Give 1 Smile, Create 5”, the campaign creates a ripple effect of hope and smile by uplifting not just patients, but also families, surgeons, hospitals, and community outreach.

“Every 3 minutes, a child is born with a cleft condition,” said Kathy MageeOperation Smile Co-Founder, President and CEO. “Thanks to AS Watson, we are able to provide access to essential surgical and comprehensive cleft care for thousands of patients. With its support, we are closing the gap between where our patients live and access to the care they need. Congratulations to AS Watson on its 185th anniversary and the achievement of 10,000 smile surgeries, making a transformative impact on the lives of so many families around the world.”

Malina added, “We sincerely thank our customers for their generous support and donations, which have made these life-changing surgeries possible. Looking ahead, AS Watson will continue to raise funds, donate, and actively involve our customers in supporting children with cleft lips - ensuring we create even more smiles together.”

Why Now Is the Perfect Time to Revisit the Fan-Favorite Universe

What began as a gripping crime drama by Courtney A. Kemp and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, has evolved into a sprawling saga with multiple spin-offs. The Power Universe has become an interconnected world of crime, loyalty, and betrayal, one that millions of fans can’t get enough of.

The journey started with Power (2014-2020), the story of nightclub owner, James “Ghost” St. Patrick, who secretly runs a drug empire. The universe then expanded to Power Book II: Ghost (2020-2024), which picks up after Ghost's death and follows his son, Tariq. Next came Power Book III: Raising Kanan (2023-2024) a prequel set in the 1990s that explores the formative years of Kanan Stark.

The saga continues with Power Book IV: Force, centering on Tommy Egan’s rise as he leaves New York behind for Chicago. With its season finale dropped on Lionsgate Play last December, there’s no better moment to dive into the chaos, drama, and high-stakes storytelling that define the Power Universe.

So, whether you’re searching for your next binge-worthy obsession or looking to revisit a world that has captivated audiences for over a decade, here are five reasons the Power Universe remains an irresistible choice.

  1. The universe is linked chronologically

If you’re the type who loves having a show running in the background while multitasking, the Power Universe is perfect. Its narratives are meticulously crafted and interconnected, making it easy to follow. You can jump seamlessly from Kanan Stark’s origins in the 1990s (Power Book III: Raising Kanan) to the aftermath of Ghost’s death in Power Book II: Ghost.

  1. The cliffhangers keep you hooked

Shattering revelations, shocking deaths, and triumphant victories—every episode is designed to keep you on edge. One moment you’re celebrating an unexpected win, the next you’re reeling from a devastating loss. The suspense ensures you’ll be hitting “next episode” without hesitation.

  1. You’ll learn to empathize with complex characters

Whose side will you take—the good or the bad? In the Power Universe, morality is never black and white. You may find yourself rooting for James “Ghost” St. Patrick, a man torn between ambition and family, or sympathizing with characters who make questionable choices. Watching their evolution is part of what makes the saga so addictive.

  1. A perfect balance of glamor and grit

From penthouses and designer wardrobes to gritty street corners, the Power Universe captures both sides of the crime world. The high-end glamour contrasts sharply with the raw realities of survival, all set to hip-hop soundtracks influenced by executive producer 50 Cent.

  1. The chaotic family drama

At its core, Power isn’t just about crime—it’s about family. Love triangles, betrayals, fractured relationships, and loyalty tested at every turn make the series as emotionally gripping as it is action-packed. It’s a family drama wrapped in a crime thriller, and that’s what keeps fans coming back.

Gear up as Powerbook IV: Force’s season finale at Lionsgate Play.

Raising the Bar: HONOR X9d 5G Takes on an Extreme Drop Test

Starting the year with a total bang! Leading global AI smart devices provider HONOR Philippines unveils its most explosive release yet—the HONOR X9d 5G. Positioned as the toughest mid-range smartphone of the year, the latest addition to the X Series is built to withstand extreme challenges while delivering powerful everyday performance.

Since the launch of the X9 Series in the Philippines in 2023, HONOR has built a reputation as an innovative technology brand known for putting smartphone durability to the ultimate test. From the debut of the HONOR X9a 5G—famously dropped under five feet and featured in viral smash tests—the ultra-tough HONOR X9b 5G, which endured an intense 50-foot drop, each generation has pushed the boundaries of what mid-range smartphones can withstand.

This legacy continued with the launch of the HONOR X9c 5G in January 2025, which quickly became the most anticipated device in the X Series, thanks to its Triple-Defense mechanism and headline-making helicopter drop test and Guinness World Records for “The Most People Performing a Mobile Phone Drop Test Simultaneously.

Now, HONOR raises the bar even higher. To prove the next evolution of toughness, the all-new HONOR X9d 5G was subjected to its most extreme challenge yet—an ultra-intense high-altitude drop test.

“Year after year, HONOR fans and consumers push us to go beyond expectations, and that inspires everything we do,” said Stephen Cheng, Vice President of HONOR Philippines. “The HONOR X9d 5G was designed with Filipino users in mind—combining toughness, innovation, especially value. Our extreme durability tests reflect our confidence in delivering a device that can keep up with real life challenges.”

And now the ultimate question remains—can the HONOR X9d 5G survive an extreme high-altitude drop from the plane? Let’s find out!

The Ultimate Phone Drop Challenge: Gian Viterbo VS HONOR X9d 5G

To ensure credibility and transparency, HONOR Philippines invited one of its trusted media partners, Gadget Pilipinas’ Editor-in-Chief Gian Viterbo, to take part in the ultimate phone drop challenge, releasing the device from an ultralight plane with a speed of 60 kms/hr.

“I said YES to the ultimate phone drop test challenge as a consumer, because I was genuinely curious about the result. I knew the risks and factors at hand, and I really wanted to know if the HONOR X9d would really survive,” expressed by Gian Viterbo, EIC of Gadget Pilipinas.

Viterbo even said that experience was ultra exhilarating. It was not just a history for him but also for the tech industry to have a phone dropped from a plane to test its durability. And when asked about the result of the durability test, “I expected its screen and body to be rendered useless, I was honestly more interested in whether I would still be able to recover my files. With this expectation, I was surprised that durability meant two things for HONOR X9d – it is durable enough to withstand the hardest conditions, and if it ever gets scratched or damaged, it is durable enough to keep my files intact. And that is the true durability,” added by Gian Viterbo.

Grab and HOPE Take a Step Forward in Education with New Classroom in Bicol

Grab Philippines and HOPE have broken ground on a new public school classroom in Manito, Albay, after raising about P1.4M through in-app donations that turned everyday rides, meal deliveries, and rewards points into funding for education infrastructure.

The funding came from a combination of user-donated GrabRewards points through GrabBayanihan, which allowed customers to channel “GrabCoins” to the project; and a dedicated “Grab HOPE Hour” drive that generated additional donations from GrabCar rides and GrabFood deliveries during a designated 60-minute window.

Grab Philippines and HOPE  have officially broken ground on the first classroom to be built at Inang Maharang Elementary School. [L-R] Grab Philippines Country Head Ronald Roda, HOPE Founder and Executive Chairperson Nanette Medved

The classroom will be built inside Inang Maharang Elementary School, which serves more than 100 students in the remote barangays of Manito. The site was selected after Typhoon Uwan damaged public facilities in the area and destroyed two makeshift classrooms at the school, the partners said, leaving students without safe learning spaces and underscoring the need for more permanent, resilient structures.

Grab Philippines Country Head Ronald Roda shares, “Grab is dedicated to moving not just goods and people, but also moving malasakit into action. Together with HOPE, we’re giving our users a simple way to participate in digital bayanihan, turning their everyday rides, deliveries, and rewards into real classrooms. These are new safe spaces where Filipino children can learn, dream, and grow. By making it easier for communities to support these initiatives, we help build a stronger foundation for the country’s next generation.”

The Grab and HOPE classroom is designed as a 7-by-9-meter learning space with four windows, wall-mounted electric fans, complete electrical wiring with outlets and lighting fixtures, and an in-room bathroom with full plumbing. It will also include standard interior fixtures such as a teacher’s desk and a chalkboard.

HOPE Founder and Executive Chairperson Nanette Medved-Po underscored how the partnership is a major part of HOPE’s programs and is giving significant impact on public school education. “We are so excited about the ways we can continue to work with the Grab community to give their contribution and make an impact to public school education in the Philippines. HOPE’s partnership with Grab has been very engaging and exciting for their subscribers: from converting their Grab points to donations, to mounting last October our first-ever GRAB HOPE Hour, when every ride, every order contributed to the classroom we’re building in Bicol. This classroom is the first of many that we hope will not only guarantee safe access to learning but inspire communities around business for good. We look forward to more activities with Grab this coming new year, and more classrooms for our public schools.”

The companies plan to sustain the collaboration through 2026, expanding infrastructure and development initiatives beyond Bicol. To participate, users can navigate to the GrabRewards catalog in-app and allocate points to HOPE.

"This classroom serves as the starting line of our shared vision to bridge the educational infrastructure gap in the Philippines. We are dedicated to scaling this initiative, ensuring that our technology continues to translate into tangible structures for communities across the country,” Roda adds.
