Sustainable by Design: GROHE Grows Its Cradle to Cradle Certified® Lineup

In a 2021 research shared by the Circularity Gap Report, about 100 billion tons of raw materials are being extracted for use in the building and construction sectors, making these industries the largest waste streams by quantity. As the world continues to deal with climate change, these sectors as well as policy makers are challenged to provide innovative and sustainable solutions to reduce and manage its waste.

One of these solutions is the Cradle to Cradle®(C2C) design concept that GROHE, a leading global brand for complete bathroom solutions and kitchen fittings, has been applying in its product portfolio for many years.

The Cradle to Cradle® design follows the circular economy concept which keeps materials in a “useful loop” – old products are not wasted and instead its materials and components are once again reused and repurposed. Products that are Cradle to Cradle Certified® are assessed for the safety, circularity and responsibility of materials and products across five categories of sustainability performance: Material Health, Recyclability, Renewable Energy, Water Efficiency, and Social Responsibility.

With its unwavering commitment to sustainability, GROHE has expanded its Cradle to Cradle Certified®  product portfolio with a new range of Gold level products: BauEdge S-Size, EurosmartS-Size, Eurosmart Kitchen, and the Tempestashower rail set.

Gold certification is more demanding where the chemical composition of the materials used contains only the purest materials.

In 2021, GROHE launched two Cradle to Cradle Certified® Bronze level products: The Tempestatwo-spray hand shower and the GROHE Blue filters.

The Bronze certification focuses on products whose regular configuration does not require any adaptations or substitutions of components.

For its certification process, GROHE worked together with accredited assessor EPEA GmbH – part of Drees & Sommer, based in Hamburg. A recertification is required every two years.

With six products that are now Cradle to Cradle Certified®, GROHE is undoubtedly in the right step towards reducing waste in the building sector, and the brand will continue to do so in the years to come.
